Acqua Santa

★★★☆☆
Chef/Owner Mario Le Manno pays homage to his native Italy by offering authentic thin-crust pizzas, homemade pastas and traditional baked dishes. He attempts to open for us a little window onto the Italian countryside, and for the most part, he is successful. The ambience is warm & inviting, the décor tasteful in its rustic elegance. With a romantic air, Acqua Santa invites you in and caresses you. The country-style bread and garlic & pepper infused olive oil tempt even the most ardent carb-counters. There are inventive antipasti dishes that spring up on the menu according to the season, some simple, some more complex. The pizzas, which are true to their Sicilian roots, are well executed, as are the traditional pasta dishes. More delicate are the appetizers and entrees that Chef Le Manno sprinkles around the menu, combining a variety of textures and flavors that can at times seem whimsical. On a recent visit, we tried the grilled asparagus, a vegetarian dish that even Passard would have admired for its flavors and colors. The best things about Acqua Santa are Chef Le Manno (best to go when he is on the premises), the romantic garden with its arbor of grape vines, the authentic country dishes made with a touch of elegance, and the dishes roasted in the brick oven. For all the subtle beauty of the venue & menu, there are some issues. The portions do not always make sense - too much or too little at times. The service can be rustic, as well, sometimes verging on lackadaisical. Eye-level & bejewelled belly buttons can be distracting. The wine service is reflective of this "laid-back" style, so expect glasses to be over-filled and timing to be a bit off. The easy-to-interpret wine list is well-suited to the overall feel of the menu. Desserts can be disappointing.

Food is awesome and the lawn sitting is charming and enchanting. It's costly, but value the price.

Fiance took me there last night for my birthday and I absolutely loved it! He's been there once couple years ago and meant to take me there for the last 3 years but never had a chance. He said that if his memory served corretly, this place used to be completely outdoor, without the plastic roof. We got to the restaurant at around 9pm Friday night and only 3 other tables were filled. However, it did get busy shortly after we sat down. I fell in love with this place immediately as it made me felt like I was in a little garden somewhere in Europe. The ambience was very romantic and even before tasting the food, I already told my fiance that if our original plan didn't work out, we should have our wedding banquet in this restaurant (we are planning to have a very small wedding). We had the Spiedino de Mozzerella and Involtini di Manzo Tonnato as antipasti and we loved both of them even though they were not quite what we expected. He then had the Strozza Preti Amatriciana and I had the Gnocchi di Bietola as entrees and again we each loved the dish that we ordered. We were so full that we could only order one dessert to share and even though it was nothing really special, the panna cotta was not a disappointment.

Pros: Romantic, Good Italian Food

Cons: Parking

.

Very pricey, but also very traditional Italian. The spaghetti bolognese tasted just like I remember in Rome. The filet mignon is melt-in-your mouth delicious. The lamb was a little dry but equally amazing. The ambiance in the garden is very romantic. The wait staff wasn't perfect but they always had a smile on their face.

DO NOT GIVE THIS BUSINESS YOUR HARD-EARNED MONEY!!!

Where, on several occasions I have had an okay meal here, it is never consistent all across the board; where on some visits the food is lackluster and uninspired, at other times the service is non-existent or so sophomoric that I still end up leaving unsatisfied.

The real atrocities begin if you should ever attempt to order from them for delivery. On two separate evenings, including this past Sunday, I have placed orders and they never arrived - once, when after almost an hour (delivery promised in 30 minutes), I got a call from the delivery man telling me he was in front of my building (he wasn't). I then called the restaurant, and the woman I spoke to said it wasn't her fault. She's terribly misguided. Of course she is responsible, because she represents the restaurant, she manages the delivery staff, she is the service provider, etc. At one hour twenty, I left my house and went to the restaurant. I tried to speak with the owner, who payed absolutely no attention to me whatsoever, even when I gave him my business card and asked him to make things right (I had a very nice meal at D.O.C. Wine Bar). Note to Acqua Santa:
1. Find out if your delivery boys actually know the streets in the neighborhood
2. Ascertain if you can communicate with your delivery boys. If not, find a way to do so
3. Its 2008 pin heads - getting lost when you're only going five blocks is no excuse. You take the orders on a computer, hook it up to Google/Yahoo maps and hand your delivery persons the directions on their way out.

This phonomenon of not taking accountability which so fully pervades the restaurant scene in Billyburg/Greenpoint must be met head on by those of us (all of us) who have plentiful food options and can therefore spend our money somewhere else - lets patronize those retaurants that give us quality food, consistently prepared, excellent service and that ARE GENUINELY HAPPY TO SEE US.

a large rodent greeted my group as we sat down for dinner at acqua santa. it raced across the outdoor garden (where we were sitting). not to worry, the maitre d' and his crony busboys decided to terminate (or beat into oblivion) the poor thing with whatever pointy objects they had around (of which they had many)... clearly, they've done this before and had the enthusiasm and zest of pro athletes.

against better judgement, we stayed to finish our meal (we moved indoors) and were given no attention (not to mention no apology) by the waitstaff. the check came, and we did not receive a discount nor a credit for the appalling experience and poor service.

afterwards i researched the restaurant at the board of health's website and found that acqua santa has violations for having vermin their restaurant. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID!

There are better and better Italian restaurant in this neighborhood. I think acquasanta needs to hire an Italian chef in order to compete with other Italian restaurant in the neighborhood. What part of Italy do they make the pizza like acquasanta?

This restaurant is a very small inside, but has a huge outdoor seating area. The menu is extensive and always have interesting specials. The prices are a little steep for the small portions that you get. Overall good scene in a chill neighborhood.

Went here back in the summer when the outdoor seating area had a nice appeal....the service was horrible then and the food was decent. This time, the service was decent and the food was mediocre at best. Zucchini flowers stuffed with mozz were oil-laden and my beet gnocchi with shrimp was very disappointing. The small shrimp were dry and rubbery and when I sent the dish back to the kitchen, the waitress returned saying that they use 'frozen shrimp so that is wny they have that texture.' Fantastic. I would only go back to try the pizza and would not recommend trying Acqua Santa unless you feel lucky.

Our meal began well enough with a nice wine, good bread and oil and a good special appetizer. My companion enjoyed a lovely special. I made the mistake of ordering from the menu: a filet mignon with a presentation that sounded wonderful. I ended up only eating the presentation, which was incidentally, not what was described. The meat, however, was wretched. it was not a filet, first of all, it was grissley and tough and unpalatable. No attempts were made by the restaurant to make up for the fact that I had paid 25 dollars for a piece of meat I wouldn't serve in my home, let alone in a restaurant under the guise of being a choice cut of meal that it clearly was not.

I have lived in New York for 12 years, and I have rarely experienced so much attitude to which a restaurant was so little entitled. The unfortunate waitress was so profoundly ill-prepared, ill-mannered, and badly trained her only recourse was to pretend sophistication and haughtiness as a substitute for her complete lack of social graces (probably a function of youth more than character). After expressing some incredulity that a fried fish would take 40 minutes (on top of the 10 we'd waited -- clearly they were backed and were unwilling to be honest with us), the only advice she (and the restaurant) could give was "If you don't like it, the chef says you can leave." Suffice it to say, we did. We went to Miss Williamsburg, and despite it being busy, were treated with decency, respect, and lovely food. Go there. Not here.

Pros: A Garden

Cons: Attitude, Poor Service

Williamsburgers are drawn to this place because of the nice outdoor setting, but the food is mediocre at best and the service is downright awful. Unless you fit a certain "type," (i.e. wealthy, with money to spend on liquor, apps etc.) plan on spending a long time waiting for an outdoor table. If you're "lucky" enough to be seated, prepare for clueless, snotty service from ditzy test bunny waitresses and run-of-the-mill quasi Italian-French-something fare. In other words, if this place did not benefit from attractive garden seating in an otherwise dreary neighborhood, it would have closed down long ago. Feh.

I've tried this place twice. The first time I was told I'd get a table in 5 minutes and after an hour and a half I was still waiting. Last night I went and was seated right away, I ordered fish and my husband ordered chicken cacciatore. ten minutes after we ordered the waitress came to our table and told us we had ordered "complicated" entrees and we would be waiting for 45 minutes. She didn't ask us if we'd like to order something else, merely suggested we buy appitizers. Ten minutes later she returned to our table and told us if we have a problem with it we could leave. We tried to explain we didn't have a problem but she merely repeated what she said. I will never return.

This place had a really neat ambiance; the outdoor dining area was spectacular. The music was even very fitting, Frank Sinatra! The service was alright, a little slow, but if your not ina hurry then it's great. The food was really good, not my favorite italian but it was worth going. The prices were even really reasonable.

I love the food, and have gone back several times, but each time the waitress is a little nastier. The garden is lovely, too, but the staff seems a bit condescending. We've had three waitresses, and only one has been pleasant. The other two seemed not to want to serve my party because we're young and look like students, rather than rich wine-drinkers. Once we practically had to beg to be seated outside because the waitress was afraid it might rain (it didn't) and she said they were full inside and had a private party coming. The salmon, the bread, and the pasta is always great! But if I find someplace friendlier that is just as tasty I won't be back. Sometimes the music is bad pop, too, and does not fit the overall ambience.
