Pizza, pizza and more pizza ?? NYC is certainly loaded with it, so when someone tells me that one pizza is better than another I have a hard time believing it. But then my sister dragged me to Famous Original Ray's Pizza, and now well I know it sounds hokey ?? but I??m a believer. It was the best pizza I ever had, and I??ve had a lot of pizza.

No only was it super yummy, the slices were huge, especially since I piled on a few toppings. It was more than enough for me, but you know while my stomach said no more, but my brain, and taste buds were looking for more, so I got a slice to go. The guys behind the counter were super nice, and well the place delivers the classic NYC pizza experience.

Perhaps the most famous pizza shop in all of NYC, Ray??s has had NPR documentaries made about it and boasts 9 locations from downtown to uptown. The Ray??s I am reviewing (for locations or online ordering, check out rayspizza.com) is not to be confused with the dozens of other independently owned pizzerias that bear the title ??Ray??s?? the namesake became so famous and synonymous with NYC pizza, that many other pizza shops took it on.

Ray??s is known for their crispy, thin crust pizza, but they also offer burgers, hot wings (chicken), calzones, heroes (hot and cold), salads and anti-pasta dishes. I especially like the Zucchini sticks, as not many pizza joints offer those and it??s a snack that at least contains a vegetable.

Ray??s offer??s a special plant-loaded Vegetarian pie to cater to the multitudes of herbivores and health-conscious types that populate Manhattan, as well as veggie burgers. Vegetarians will also like the copious salad offerings and vegetable appetizers, like sauted spinach or broccoli with garlic, again, rarely served at the typical pizzeria.

Ray??s goes above and beyond in creating unique pizzas you will not see on the menu at other places; a meatlover??s pie (The Ray??s Special) that contains bacon, anchovies, green peppers, onions, as well as meatballs, sausage, pepperoni and extra mozzarella cheese, and two different pies that have pasta on top (one with lasagna, the other with penne and vodka sauce).

Prices are indeed affordable. While it seems the price of a slice in NYC is almost an index one can use to gauge inflation, and is universally about $2.25 now, a greek salad will only run you $6 and a cheeseburger only $4.

There must have been 5 places that claimed to be the original Ray's! All were mediocre at best. Chicago pizza wins hands down!
