Just like the children who attend, Downing Street Co-op is small but unquestionably charming. The teachers are creative and the parents are involved--it makes for a great nursery school experience. The warmth and charm at Downing Street are worth more than five stars. I have sent 2 children there and could not have wished for a better introduction to school. The environment is caring, nurturing, inviting, and refreshingly outside of the craziness that nursery school in Manhattan can become.

The location is amazing too. Many trains to hop on, many stores to shop in, many cafes to meet or work in, the area surrounding Bleecker and Carmine Streets is perfect for parents using precious hours while the wee ones play and learn. After school, the brick-oven pizza and pasta restaurants next door are kid-friendly places to grab lunch. A noodle shop and gelateria are also within steps.

From the address to the philosophy, Downing Street Co-op Nursery School is a really remarkable place.

I love this school! This is my daughter's second year, and it's even better than the first. She has learned so much - at 3 years old she is writing quite well - and I give all the credit to the two amazing teachers. They have endless patience and show the children so much kindness. They develop excellent lesson plans and make learning so much fun. The space the school occupies, while small, is chock full of engaging toys, books, and activity areas, but at the same time, all well-organized. This school is a co-op, so parental involvement is required - if you do not want to be a part of running a school effectively, then do not apply to the Downing Street Playgroup. However, if you do want to be involved in your child's early education, and want to spend time in their class, then this is the school for you. You will not regret it!

Pros: Excellent Teachers; proximity to a cute, enclosed playground

Cons: limited hours, but then again, this is not a daycare!

It was really by coincidence that I heard about this wonderful school. It is not as widely promoted as some of the other preschools out there, partly due to its modest size, but I can highly recommend to check it out.
The teachers are amazing, the atmosphere is cheerful and stimulating, and there is a real feeling of community due to the high level of parent involvement (administrative as well as helping out during class sessions).
We live in Tribeca, not the Village, but it is certainly well worth the somewhat longer commute!
