10 years ago I would have given this place 10 stars for the fun and memories as well as the food.

Years ago the hosts were dressed in drag and really had a lot of fun with the guests, the fries were to DIE for and they served drinks ...there was also a plethora of interesting events every time we were there in the wee hours of the morning.

I can say that the place has toned down a lot now and the host act like they barely notice you (no longer in drag, regular diner hosts)...however, the fries and gravy are still unbelievable as are most things on the menu.

The prices have also not changed in a looong time.

Worth a try for a drunk (or not drunk) late night out.

One of the last great diners left on the island of Manhattan. It's all about the comfort food and the vibe here. There's no better place to stop at after partying in the city to get some food before going home...that's right, they're open 24 hours.

I've been to Empire Diner many times and I've had mixed experiences. Most dishes are good I especially like the fries, Chicken stir fry and their burgers. The salad was too oily and salmon pasta was bland. My husband loves the place and the atmosphere which is why we keep on coming back, if it was up to me I could live without.

I ate at Empire Diner on my first full day in NYC, and few meals came close to it the rest of the trip. The fries were absolutely delicious - they're shaved fries, almost like chips, but cooked to a perfect consistency (soft and chewy). I had the Mediterranean lamb burger, and I ate every bit of it. So yummy!Service was fine - no complaints. The hot chocolate we ordered on the way out was the best we had that week - rich flavor and hot enough to warm my hands as we walked.

I love the Empire Diner. Great burgers and fries, and the best rootbeer floats in NYC. Really, everything you would want in a diner, with fantastic service as well. I also love the decor, very kitchy and fun.

While I cannot review the food here (I honestly dont remember what I ate or what it tasted like -- only that it was food and it was good). I can review the fact that this fabulous place is not only a diner, but is also a bar. They make a mean apple martini and have wine by the bottle. This is a great place to go with friends at 4 am after a night on the town. It was reasonably priced and there was no wait to get a table. The staff were patient with our inebriated state. Of course, maybe they used that to sell us expensive bottles of wine. No matter - it was still fun!

I've eaten at Empire Diner on three different occasions (two with others and once by myself) and I've never experienced this terrible service that everyone speaks of. The waiters I've had were pleasant and friendly, and joked around with the people at my table. I've eaten there during Sunday brunch, during Friday dinner, and once in the middle of the afternoon on a Wednesday. I never had slow service or was yelled at by anyone who worked in the restaurant. Sure, the place is located in a trendy neighborhood and the people who work there like to talk and be social with each other, but this has never affected my meal or the service I've received from Empire Diner. I give them four stars because the food is a tad too expensive for diner food, but it's still good.

.THE SEVICE SUCKED!!!!! THE SATFF WAS RUDE AND UNHELPFULL, THEY EVEN YELLED BACK WHEN WE WERE ASKING FOR MAYO. I HIGHLY RECCOMEND THAT NO ONE GO TO THIS PLACE UNLESS YOU ARE STARVING TO BE TREATED BEYOUND RUDELEY AND WANT TO BE YELLED AT BY THE STAFF FOR ASKING FOR CONDEMETES. I THINK THIS IS THE WORSE LATE NIGHT RETAURANT IN NEW YORK. THE CODDEL THIER RUDE STAFF INTO THINKKING THEY ARE SOMETHING MORE THAN HIRED SERVING STAFF. IT WAS IF WE WERE THERE TO INFORCE THEIR OVER ZELOUS EGOS, THIS TYPE OF SERVICE SHOULD NOT BE CONDOMNED AND THIER STAFF SHOULD BE REPLACED. NO RESTAURANT IS IMUNE TO THIER THEIR YELLING AT CUSTOMERS SO THEY CAN TAKE A BREAK AND CHAT WITH THEIR ?FRIENDS? I SEE THIS NEW YORK LANDMARK FOLDING IN FROM THEIR OWN SENSE THAT THEY SEEM TO THINK THAT ARE UNTOUCHABLE

We were sat very quickly, which was nice. The table beside us who arrived afterwards was given water, menus, cutlery and even served before we had anyone come by. The waiters only came by when a co-worker embarrassingly started waiving and calling loudly to anyone who worked there to come to our table and help us out. we didnt get our menu until 30 mins into sitting down and werent fed until almost over an hour later.

the food was good, too bad it took so long to order and all the waiters should try another career

Just took my family to this place for lunch. Nice people and cute ambience. They were very good to the kids. But the food was disappointing all round. Buffalo wings tasted like they were reheated. My son didn't like the taste of his fish and later was sick all over the sidewalk. And Empire charges restaurant prices - not diner prices - $13 burgers and $6 milk shakes. It just wasn't good value - even without the dodgy freshness problem. Much better value around - in fact, anywhere.

10 minutes for a grilled cheese? What's that... toasted bread and cheese? Also, the waiters are condescending, snooty, and irritable. Avoid.

Pros: They serve food. Helpful if you're on the verge of death.

Cons: They would give your loved ones a hard time for dying in their restaurant.

Quite frankly, the only people who think this place can be good are drunk partygoers. After trying this slop once for a Sunday morning brunch, and then vowing never to go back again, the only reason why the Empire can still be in business is because of its 24 hour dining. Only if you're absolutely starving. Service was good, however, in contrast with other reviewers.

The Empire Diner is a cool retro diner on 10th Avenue in West Chelsea. The food is excellent. The sweet potato fries are a delicacy! They have a wide selection of beer and other drinks. They often have live music at night and during Sunday brunch.

PROS: Great food, pet friendly outside, innovative specials and variety on menu
CONS: Spotty service at times

After waiting for 45 minutes (tables around us who ordered after us were served), I politely enquired how long our meal would be. The waiter replied 'When it's ready!'. When I picked my jaw up from the floor, I asked him to actually check. The waiter returned from the kitchen to say it was still going to be a few minutes. Some time later he came back to our table to say that one of our meals had run out! Clearly that hadn't started to cook our food and the order had been forgotten. We were repeatedly told how busy they were but that really isn't an excuse in NYC. Needless to say we left. In a city where restaurants open and close every week, Empire Diner can't seriously think they stand a chance with such petulant, incompetant and sarcastic staff! Don't waste your time.

these people are imbeciles who don't even know the basics in hospitality (e.g. - graciousness? promptness?). also, their food is overpriced and bland. i would say it was a totally underwhelming experience, except i left there feeling very angry and annoyed.

i'm glad that i went there so that i can never return.

here's a tip boys, just b/c you think that you lead the high-life after hours, doesn't make your waitstaff job any more glamorous, it's still food service.

The Empire Diner, while it looks legitimate, complete with neon signs and the word "diner" in its name, is not a real NYC diner. The menu is a sparse one-pager (no pancakes, no tuna melts, etc.), and apparently substitutions of any kind are not allowed. I asked for sweet potato fries instead of the Empire's greasy, tasteless, crunchless chips, and I was informed that substitutions "like that" are not allowed. Also, oddly, they don't offer diet soda of any kind - apparently diet soda is not in high demand among New Yorkers, who are surely neither weight-conscious or observant of sugar intake!?! Here's a substitution I recommend - substitute the Empire Diner for a real NYC. There are plenty along 23rd street across the entire island.

I used to go to Empire Diner all the time. Many of the dishes are great-tasting and good value.

It's knock is really the service. I'm not someone who complains about service, but sometimes you can get a server whose attitude is just well out of bounds. Your chances for a difficult server can really go up on the weekends in nice weather when the outdoor cafe fills up.

Plus, despite being a diner, Empire doesn't have pancakes. What kind of diner doesn't have pancakes?

I started going to The Half King, just around the corner, instead. A more interesting menu, consistently good service and no attitudes. They serve food until about 2 AM.

Learned about it from The Diner's Deck - they take some of the most quintessential diner fare items and deliver them with flair. It was a late night and we really enjoyed the quite live Piano Music (I don't believe they were show tunes like a previous reviewer mentioned) and classic rail-car experience. The vanilla malt was the best I tasted in New York. The blackout cake was fantastic. My buddy said his omelette was "really good." This place is truly wonderful. Best of all, our bill came to $16 after we dropped our Diner's Deck $10 OFF card.

Empire Diner is cozy, sometimes even pretty and you get to hear cheesy showtunes performed live by hired musicians as well as by the restaurant's guests. But don't come for the food or the service. The burgers are decent enought, but the french fried potato slivers that come with them are artless greasy little crimes. Other items we tried were pretty awful too. The worse part is the most awful service imaginable. The waiters here just don't give a hoot about their customers. While we were trying to have dinner, all of the waiters spent their time playing with spilled milk at the counter, not paying any attention to the diners. We literally had to yell to get their attention. Really dreadful.

Empire may not have the best food, or be the cheapest, or even have incredible service. But it's not a mediocre feeling place at all. You feel special eating in this rail car and slowly drinking coffee, looking out onto a rainy 10 Avenue. The food is actually pretty good and it's the only place I can find Abita Turbodog, a microbrew from Louisiana. So I'll keep coming back, and feeling special.

It's hard to find a place with outdoor seating in NYC--and this one is a block away from my front door--but twice I have experienced bad service from the snotty glam guys who moonlight as waiters. If the food was good enough, I might bite my tongue and return, but its not. Don't bother.
