I recently rescued a pretty little calico cat from the streets of Newburgh. She had been a house cat, co-workers of mine would see her sitting in an apartment window. About 4 months ago, the tenants moved and left their cat to be evicted by the landlord, she resorted to living on the streets and relied on charitable feedings from St. Lukes Hospital employees. Day after day we would see this cat, and tried many times to catch her, but to no avail. So we continued to feed this sweet but elusive cat on a daily basis. After many months of trying, on a Thursday, we got her! I found a willing suspect to adopt her, my mom! We thought this was a pretty lucky kitty, so she was named Lotto. Lotto had an appointment at Hudson Highlands for the next Tuesday, just for a check up. Over the weekend my mom had noticed Lotto's breathing to be labored. When we brought her in to be seen at Hudson Highland, Dr. Kalba agreed, and quickly assessed difficulty with her heart sounds. An xray was needed, and it was discovered she had a tear in her diaphragm, causing her intestines to be in her chest cavity. And she was pregnant, ready to give birth within the week. Lotto and her kittens would surely die if emergency surgery was not performed. My mom and I simply wanted a humane solution to treating this foundling cat, what we were offered is simply amazing and still touches me as I write this. Drs McNamara and Christiansen would perform the surgery gratis, at the insistance of Dr. Whitefield. Before we knew it, Lotto was whisked away to surgery. I had been at a fundraising event the evening before, and had won a large bouquet of flowers. After getting home from the vet, I took those flowers and placed them in front of the St. Francis statue at our church. I went home after my short visit at church, only to hear my phone ringing. It was Dr. Christiansen, Lotto and her 4 kittens were doing well, but the next 24 hours would be critical. That evening, Allyson, a vet tech, would take the kittens home over night to feed them every hour. Lotto lost a lot of blood, as luck would have it, the vet had a unit of feline blood about to expire that evening, and Lotto was transfused. Things were looking up for our girl! I have told many people about Lotto and the lifesaving efforts performed by Hudson Highland's, everyone amazed by her story and the random act of kindness they all performed that day. We are more than appreciative for their compassion. Today Lotto had her 2 week post op visit, she is doing well and her 2 surviving kittens are thriving. It was truly Lotto's lucky day. And ours too.

Do not allow our cherished beloved family member??s unnecessary death to be in vein. Beware of Hudson Highlands Vet. Med. Group, PC. Unfortunately I did the research after the errors that led to the death of our family dog at the hands of HHVMG. I along with many other patrons of this vet was left bewildered to say the very least. HHVMG is extremely over priced and uncaring! Their propaganda will try to convince all otherwise, as they try to lure you into their economic trap. Once you and your pet are in their care that is when they stop caring. We brought Jasper (7 year old healthy Jack Russell Terrier) early in the day (3/19/10) to the facility in Hopewell Jct. knowing he was ill. After a short examination and $375 later ??the award winning vet? deemed him to be fine and sent him home. My wife called throughout the day to notify the staff the dog was getting sicker. The staff assured my wife the dog was fine and that the examinating Dr. would call us back. The call we were desperately waiting for never came. As the evening progressed so did Jasper??s illness. Multiple calls were made to HHVMG, pleading to allow us to bring Jasper back to the facility. Finally 12 hours later the annoyed phone receptionist agreed to call in a doctor. We rushed our boy back to the facility. Before they would agree to look at our dog we were forced to sign two waivers indemnifying the hospital and their staff of any and all responsibility. Not to mention they would need a down payment of $1600 before proceeding with any treatment. Jasper died that evening. The next day my young son and I went to the HHVMG to pick up our pet??s remains so that we could bury him next to our other dog that died at the same facility. We were first ignored than rudely treated. Finally they dumped a cardboard toilet tissue box on my son with our beloved boy stuffed inside. As we turned to leave we were mandated to pay another $366. After reviewing the receipt the bottom stated the vet??s orders; ??buy a flee & tick collar, keep the incision clean and dry, check your dog??s stitches daily, keep the doctor??s notified of any swelling or redness, Your dog may need an Elizabethan collar, no food or water for two hours, no running jumping, no ball playing for a few days? There are many great vets that will give our pets honest and reliable care. Facilities that truly put the animals?? health & well being before the almighty dollar, HHVMG is NOT one of them!

Dr. John Whitefield was both my chosen veterinarian and a very good friend. I miss both his friendship and expertise a lot. It is unfortunate that The Hudson Highlands Veterinary Medical Group has been unable to maintain the high quality standard set by Dr J. I must say they are well on their way back to their former status. I think they are a little pricey for what you get for now though.

I have gone to Beacon and Hopewell and to the new Hopewell Jct. HH vet for 33 years! Dr. Whitefield and staff have been great. When he passed I remained a client and they have the most services of any vet practice I have ever seen or read about. They are in the 16% of accredited vet hospitals by the AAHA. They even have a cardiologist on staff and perform the most complex procedures on animals. They saved my one dog's life who had bloat and kept him going for 12 years even with a few leg problems. My dog even had accupuncture there. It's a great place. I always ask for DR. JEREMY SCHECK as he has helped us through a lot and given us excellent care. No matter what the cost they have the expertise and I wouldn't go anywhere else with my 2 German Shepherds!!!!! Great customer care there. Bob

I had been a client of HHVMC for 20 years working with 3 veterinarians who I respected. In 2004 when the hospital founder Dr. John Whitefield unexpectedly passed his spirit and ideals of service were no longer practiced. The ultimate disrespect to his legacy and the professional reputation of Dr. John Whitfield is that his wife Dr. Twila Moore took his name after his death and is now practicing as Dr. Whitefield. Pet owners should be warned that they are not seeking a consult with the well respected Dr. John Whitefield and would be wise to seek services elsewhere.

This is where my parents have taken their pets for years and they have never been dissatisfied. The vets and their helpers all seem to really care about your animals so they get great treatment there.

PROS: very caring vets
CONS: a bit pricey but so are all vets today!
