Loved our breakfast there - they had a sizeable breakfast/brunch/lunch menu. I never got dessert because I was too full. It may be over-priced, I was too caught up taking in the experience. I'll definitely go back some time. Super cute place!

Pros: atmosphere, food

Cons: claustrophobics beware

This isn't like the Cafe Lalo you see in You've Got Mail. Cafe Lalo is always incredibly busy, and for good reason. Great desserts for reasonable prices.

I had 30 minutes for a cup of coffee and a slice of cake. Everywhere else would have been enough but not here.
Waiting for 10 minutes while the server was relaxing by the counter, talking with the hostes and her back to the tables. Who can get her attention for the check or for water ? I had to leave my table without the check and finaly got the check on my way out.
Not a place to revisit.

Pros: off the avenue

Cons: slow service, expensive, unexperienced server

We were lured here by Time out New York's spread on week-day brunch. What a sham. This place is horrible. My fiance got sick, is throwing up now...My eggs were dry, "steamed", horrible. Espresso was bitter, the fruits were not fresh as advertised, nothing was near decent and at 47.00$ for two for brunch we could have eaten at Balthazaar! Lesson learned. Avoid if possible.

Pros: semi alluring decor

Cons: Terrible food, old fruits, dry eggs with eggshells, just bad

I love to stop by here for coffee and sweet treats to go. Usually it is overflowing with people and the couple of times I sat down for table service, it was pretty slow. I just LOVE the darling christmas lights that they have glowing year round though. it really adds a special touch to the block.

I used to love the place tho' the food is not really good, but its atmosphere always make me happy.
The plenty of dessert in the shelf always look fantastic but not as good as they look, don't expect too much.
I decided to go to Cafe Lalo on Valentine's night because of the late night hour, and got DISAPPOINTED.
I was there around 12.30 am. and it was still crowded.
I had chocolate lava which was not bad at first but after I dug it to the bottom, the chocolate was very sticky and hard to eat. Seems like it was burnt and got too hard so I couldn't finish it all. Waste of money but since I didn't expect so much, it's ok.
Then the WORST thing came to ... SERVICE.
I was having the Super premium and organic decaf ICE coffee, the coffee taste itself wasn't too bad, but having it with the super sweet dessert made the coffee taste like nothing. So, I asked the waitress for SYRUP. The first one came to me and asked me back like, 'What kind of syrup do you want?' I was like, wow! there are so many kinds of syrup here, interesting! But how can I know which one would be good for my ice coffee..I asked her back and she made 'some kind of face' then went away to find the waitress who was serving me at the first time. There she came, I had to tell her again about what I want, this time, I told her that I just need something that can make my coffee sweeter. Can't believe what she told me, with 'some kind of face', she said 'then you can use that sugar' (with her eyes looking at the sugar on the table)..I was like, 'Umm , do you think that this kind of sugar could be melt in the ICE coffee?' She, again, made 'that kind of face', arrogant, ignorant and kind of thought that I was a fool. due to the fact that many waitresses there were not very busy, they were standing, giggling, talking, singing and dancing!

Well, the food and dessert here are just normal, not worth for the price, plus the WORST SERVICE ever.
I'd definitely not go back ever again!

1) There are a ton of flies every time I go there
2) Every time I go there, I see up to 3 roaches crawling around. When I alert they staff they have told me (and I quote) "That isnt my problem. Write the manager a letter".
3) The seating is cramped
4) the service is very slow
5) Once I found a platinum blonde hair in my $8 irish coffee. I told the waitress who accused me of putting one of my own hairs in the coffee. I pointed out that I have brown hair. She said my bangs were light colored and she wanted to compare. She reached out and attemped to PULL OUT ONE OF MY HAIRS.
6) The music is very loud, to where you can't hear the conversation of the people you are with.

Yeah. I wont go back. Of course I say that every time I go, after someone has convinced me things will be better. It never is. I wish it were. The decor is very cute and the desserts are pretty tasty.

Came here for dessert after Lunch at Uncle Nicks in Hells Kitchen, which was delicious and cheap. What a difference between Nicks and Lalo! We ordered the apple crumble with ice cream, which was gooey and not in a good way-- no flavor, not a good texture, boring, and a Midnight Chocolate Cake, which we had to order a scoop of ice cream for after getting a bite into it and realizing it was dry and not very tasty. So, after dousing the desserts in ice cream, we were able to stomach them, but of all the places in NY that I've had dessert (and I consider myself quite a connoisseur), I recommend avoiding Cafe Lalo. It was SUCH a disappointment. The waitresses were aloof and hovering around seemingly bored. They informed us AFTER we had eaten that it was Cash Only and I didn't see a sign when we came in, so my friend had to rush to an ATM so we could pay. And to top it all off, for two desserts a la mode (to cover how bad the deserts themselves were) and two of the small glass bottles of diet coke (the old novelty bottles), it was 25.00 before tip! lunch at uncle nicks was less than that and was delicious and filling! I will never go back to Lalo again. There are too many places to get fabulous, tasty, not gooey, not dry, not overpriced desserts in NYC.

This small French Cafe is adorable and chic. It appears in the romantic comedy, You've Got Mail. The lighting is simply romantic. I go there for the charm rather than the food although the food is good but a bit pricey. Desert and Breakfast are their specialty.

Cafe Lalo is our favorite place for dessert on the Upper West Side. It has long lines at times but well worth the wait! my husband and I have been coming here for years and will always be on the lookout for our favorite after dinner treats!

Pros: Wonderful variety of desserts

I've been here once for brunch and twice for dessert. I've heard pretty good things about the place, so I wanted to give it a good try. But on every visit, the customer service was very frustrating. They hire very young girls who don't seems to know much about giving good service. After squeezing around tables and repeatedly saying "excuse me" as you can't help but bump into others as you attempt to get to your seat, you have to ask for a server after you've been sitting for 10 minutes. My third (and last) time there, in order to clear off the table next to us, the bus boy set their dirty dishes on our table. The coffee is good, but good luck on getting a refill. Brunch was ok, and the desserts just so-so. Definitely not worth the high prices and inept service.

We are new to the nieghbor hood and went over to this cozy place for a quick dessert after dinner across the street. It was very noisy but the dessert was great! I had this chocolate layer thingy that was out of this world! Check it out!

It is overpriced but you are in the infamous cafe lalo. The brunch is good. fresh ingredients. Depend on what you order, it could be great or soso. The dessert I've had a few and is not all that. My boyfriend loves the belgium waffle with fresh berries and the homemade whip cream is indulging( I LOVE IT TOO) But at a steep price $12. That's NY. Service lags. They hire teeny boppers to serve and few are nice but majority are a bit oblivious. I go there at least 10 times a year and the help is always different. Go for the experience. I go back because of the vegetable panini and belgium waffle. Coffee drinks is not out of this world and overpriced.

It's so tiny and crowded with tables (can't go it you are obese, that's for sure), and costs about 20% more than it should. Kind of touristy, I guess is how to describe it.

Have come here quite a few times since the early 90's, and have never been that impressed. At first, I went for lack of any other venues in the UWS. Now I go only if a friend insists. The tables are small, chairs are uncomfortable, and there's ALWAYS a wait. The desserts are good, but you can get great desserts everywhere in NYC. It must be because of the "You've Got Mail" movie that everyone's so crazy about Lalo's...

I really tried to like this place (it's one of my boyfriend's favorites), but I couldn't. My sweet tooth is the size of the Empire State Building, and I definitely appreciate the delicious Cafe Lalo desserts (especially their REAL, rich whipped cream), but I can't get over how crowded this place is, and how stuffy and pretentious it feels. The worst part of my experience is trying to squeeze through to my seat without putting my butt into somebody's dessert. (And no, my butt is not that big.) To be fair, the place is not a boring one - it does stand out, and it has the potential to be charming, but somehow it just lacks grace. Anyway, I recommend going there once because the desserts are worth it. Then you can decide if you will coming back. I won't.

Don't just visit Cafe Lalo because it was in the movie You've Got Mail. This place can stand on its own. Although the place was packed when I arrived about 11am I was seated promptly. The service is good and the staff is friendly. The food is awesome and well worth every penny. The coffee is great too. Don't miss this little cafe on the West side of Central Park.

This is a healthy place! They to do not use oil or butter to cook, they steam the eggs. Fresh squeezed orange juice and fresh bread! It was delicius. We loved the ambience and the French style. The trees outside with orange leaves and small white lights, very romantic!

I brought my 11 and 13-year-old cousins here late Saturday night for a treat after a show. What a mistake! The place was so packed we could barely move; there was not enough room at our table for all of our chairs. The waitress was distracted and borderline-rude. We keep kosher, and were told there were many kosher cakes- in fact only one was available, it was not what was described to us, and it was tasteless. Also, the tab for dessert and coffee/hot cocoa for 4 people came to over $50, before tip. I used to love this place, but it has really gone downhill. The girls will now be excited to see "You've Got Mail", but this cafe was otherwise entirely disappointing. Next time we're going to Ben and Jerry's.

The service was horrible. I never complain about restaurants, but went to the trouble of registering just to let you know; definitely not worth the money.
I ordered the Parisian breakfast which, on the menu, consists of a croissant, fruit on the side, and the option of a teapot. I only received the croissant, which was rock hard and stone cold, and the teapot. I was charged over the menu price. I paid $9 for a croissant and some tea. Gratuity not included.
The waitresses seemed nice but I didn't see enough of them to be able to tell you for sure. This place just left a bad taste in my mouth, on several levels. Maybe they're better at night or with their more signature pastries.
Take care, y'all. :) And good luck

Yes, the place can get very crowded, and the service is not great, but the atmosphere is very cute. It's a nice place to go with friends just to talk and catch up. Not worth making a trip for, but if you're in the area, it's worth a stop by.

The service was horrible. Their desserts are overpriced and it is really crowded. The noise level is equivalent to a sports bar. You can definitely get the same quality dessert in the different restaurants around that location.

not necessarily for the dessert. I have been to Lalo many times, and the soft glow of the lights, and the fun, European-style interior never fail to impress whomever I bring there. While they certainly have a long and exhaustive list of dessert options, I find that the idea of the dessert is often better than actually eating it. Pies, however, are a standout (I just wish the slices were bigger), and the milkshakes are good, too. While they offer about twenty varieties of cheesecake, none of them are great. The option of (real) fresh whipped cream and hot fudge toppings definitely helps. Cake-based desserts are often disappointing. The service is OK--pleasant but not particularly professional. And the tables are definitely cramped, though that's part of the charm of the place. On a warm night, with the windows open, and french jazz playing in the background, it is pure romance.

Adorable cafe on the west side. Tables are a bit scrunched together but the patrons and waitresses make it bearable. Charming old-fashioned euro decor plus a great selection of yummy chesses, dessert, tea, coffee and snacks make this cafe a must stop if you're in the area.

This is a great place to go for dessert and coffee after dinner. Be prepared though as the wait on a Saturday night was about 45 min. There are park benches outside to wait at. Fun to have the You've Got Mail movie experience. The big difference we noticed was there were a lot more tables so it was a bit crowded

This place is great for a date or coffee and dessert after dinner... if you can handle it. It's extremely crowded, and the service is lackluster, but the music is fun and the decorum is quite lovely. The food is well-presented but not particularly delicious. The coffee drinks are excellent, however, and during warmer months they open all the windows. It is drastically overpriced, so be prepared to pay dinner prices for dessert. Don't bother with the savory food.

Some places just have a certain charm that makes them seem magical. This along with the fantastic desserts is what explains the crowds waiting to get into Cafe Lalo. Sure, it's busy every time I've been there. And along with that comes noise and sometimes jostling. But it's a fun and festive atmosphere and the waitstaff is doing the best that they can to make everybody happy. With some of the clientele, it's not always easy so give them a break and, if you can, a hefty tip. They deserve it!

This is a very European cafe...don't come here if you require waiters that sprint to your table and hover around your table waiting for you to drop your napkin. But, really, you're not there for the service. You're there for the divine desserts! My only complaints were that is is a little crowded (too many tables for the space and too many waitressess probably), and if you come after 4 (when brunch is over) and you're hoping to get food before dessert (though there's no reason not to come JUST for the huge dessert selection), the menu is sparse...just $11 sandwiches and salads (which are good, though not outstanding...could get same/better for cheaper elsewhere...like Le Pain Quotidien). Come here if you like Serendipity 3, but would rather wait 15-30 minutes for a table instead of 1-2 hours.

Pros: great dessert, great atmosphere, not touristy

Cons: , busy, not for dinner

Despite the slow service and crowd, I can't wait to bring my kids here again during our next visit to NY. We came on a Saturday afternoon when the place was packed. My sister warned me that the staff would look like model/actress wannabes waiting to be discovered, and that the customers were mostly Manhattan yuppies. Though she was right, we also found the place to be very welcoming to my kids who were 5 y.o. and 8 y.o. at the time. The customers acted as if they didn't even notice the only two children in the place - no dirty looks as expected. Our waitress made recommendations to the kids, and acted like to she really enjoyed serving them.

Cafe Lalo has wonderful atmosphere and delectable desserts, but the lame, indifferent, and sub-par service ruins the experience. On a recent visit, we were told that the staff "won't" make a frozen coffee drink although they certainly made milkshakes and other blended drinks. No other explanations given. We waited nearly half an hour for a slice of tart and cannolis. Cafe Lalo should match the quality of its food and its reputation with competent, customer-friendly serving staff.

Although they have an amazing variety of delicious desserts and drinks, avoid this place is you don't want to wait for more that 1/2 hour in a line of sardines getting shoved every which way. I have never been here when the place is not PACKED. Brought my parents here on a Sunday night to meet 2 friends for dessert and they were shoved, bumped and accidentally kicked a multitude of times. Plus they crank the music so you can't really casually talk - it's more like a scream to hear one another. The space is just too small for all the people. Plus the Japanese tourists that come in w/ video cameras to see the space is downright annoying. Avoid if you're not in the mood for huge crowds.

the lemon cake was very dry. i think my girlfriend had cake w/nuts, whatever it was, it was dry too. a waitress pushed me out of the way so she could see the counter without one word. plus it was so crowded, back to back seating. what a waste of money and time!

I like this place and have been there at least 10 times. Ok, the service is inconsistent but the desserts are really the best in town. Ambience is lovely and the place looks magical at night.

This place is a little hype, but the desserts are good and the ambiance is great - the place looks incredible at night. Its a fun place to go on a date or meet up with the girls. The service wasn't anything amazing (a little over your shoulder too much at times), but fine. The great variety or desserts is enough to satisfy all. A great sweet-tooth experience.

Cafe Lalo is always a stop for me when I'm in NYC. Reading the rest of the reviews - it can be crowded. Best to go late at night, middle of the day, or when the weather is nice enough to sit at the couple of outside seats. But you can bet it wouldn't be this crowded if the desserts weren't damn worth it! To die for! Service is fine, generally friendly and as speedy as the crowds allow for. And again - their chocolate cake is just amazing, as is the key lime pie, the mud cake and oh so many other items. Yummy!!

NOISY,CROWDED, EXTREMELY RUDE STAFF...WAITRESSES SELF INVOVLED, DITZY. NOT WORTH THE EFFORT OF WAITING ON LINE. MANAGEMENT IGNORES COMPLAINTS. OBVIOUSLY THEY WILL THRIVE ON MOVIE BUZZ UNTIL WORD OF MOUTH GETS AROUND!

I stumbled upon this place one afternoon in the spring and loved it immediately. The place is typical NYC in size. On the day I found it Cafe Lalo was only half full and I still felt cramped. I have never been there on the weekend but I image brunch is busy. The menu is limited but considering it is only a coffee and pastry shop one can not expect much more than what they offer. The few deserts I've tried have been exceptional. The coffee menu could use a tweaking. And as previously mention by other reviewers the service is lacking. I wouldn't suggest this place during those peak times on the weekend but for a little something to eat after 2pm and before 5pm the place is perfect.

Cafe Lalo is a waste of time. The place is loud, extremely crowded, the service inept, and to top it off the food isn't even that good! I'd only go again if I were in the area, walked by, and saw that it was empty. Even then I might still keep walking. Unless you feel a gripping need to eat where a Meg Ryan film was shot (and I think that's the reason most end up there), skip this one.

Obviously, the last "reviewer" has never been to Paris, unless it was Paris, Texas; he's too busy working at Cafe Lalo. The service here is awful, waiting in excess of an hour for a slice of cake to be brought to the table. And the desserts? You can do much better in the city.

waited 45 just to get our orders taken, and only after perstering the waitstaff about 10 times. Of course, we are given the wrong order... twice. After speaking to someone who claimed to be the manager, we left in disgust, without paying.

Repugnant, loathsome, disgusting. A few of the milder terms to describe this glorified IHOP. Once we were seated at our crammed corner table still covered in what was probably Log Cabin syrup, we perused the menus, noticing a crunching sensation beneath our feet. Somehow, the previous patron had managed to spill Cheerios all over the floor, and -SHOCKER- no one bothered to clean up! We finally ordered and our waiter "warned" us that our eggs might take a while because "they have to cook them seperately." Huh??? Literally 90 minutes later, our food arrived. We all ordered potatoes, but our waiter informed us "oh, we ran out." Why don't you damn walk your lazy self to Gristedes or Zabars and pick some up then!? Annoying tourists, Upper West Siders wishing they were Tom Hanks or Meg Ryan, and ditsy staff- oh yes! run, don't limp, to Cafe Lalo!

I agree with some of the comments ahead of me. Honestly Lalo is very small and when they're busy you may feel a little crammed-in. Also true, i wouldn't exactly describe the wait staff as speedy...

...but this coffee shop/restaurant is a must for anyone searching for a cozy spot to relax and a tasty bite to eat. I highly recommend their brunch.

Okay, whoever goes here to eat dinner is crazy, no wonder they are complaining about the food, the weekend brunch is decent, like any other but you go here for coffee, desserts, and their after dinner liquor selection! I love the cheescakes, coffee alternatives and four page dessert menu here! amazing place for an after dinner get together for coffee with friends or a significant other! The serice is slow to meet the nver ending line out the door of hungry customers, so be prepared

Having waited over 30 minutes for an order, which when finally delivered wasn't what we had asked for, we were told by the waitress that she was "too busy" to get our correct order. We complained to the manager, who it turns out, was ditzier than the waitresss (but, to give her a little credit, not as rude). I had heard so much about this place, and have to say that I have never been treated so rudely in all my life.

The food is okay (but the slices have definitely gotten smaller and the prices, higher). The SERVICE is the WORST I've ever experienced in my 8 years of living in NYC!!! The waitress got our order wrong THREE times. She had the gall to say "I'm too busy" when I asked her YET AGAIN to bring me the correct order!!! (I wanted to tell her that she's busy precisely because customers like me are there--which will change soon enough.) I'm sticking with Cafe Mozart--which has the same desserts, bigger slices, and lower prices!

COMPLETELY OVERRATED. i would rate the service as horrendous, but we never received any. the servers ignored us as we sat there for 30 minutes. when we finally decided to leave and ordered our desserts to go, the server asked us to check the display case to see if our dessert choices were still available. HELLO? wasn't that her job?? despite the cute decor, lalo is not worth the hassle or the attitude. there are many better dessert places in the city. i'd rather wait in line for emack & bolio's any night.
