Best Hair Cut & Color

I decide to have a short haircut a year ago and on a recommendation had it done by Noel during a visit to NYC. She did a simply outstanding job. I have been unable to get the same quality in my hometime ever since ? for cut and highlights. On a visit to NY last week I decided to contact the salon at short notice and have a cut and color. Noel and Peter once again did a splendid and I am tempted to return to NY on a regular basis!
Pros: Professional and good

Fabulous Salon!

This is the first salon in NY which I believe is top notch. The stylists are friendly, down to earth, and great at their craft. I also believe the prices are low compaired to other NYC salons. I would highly recommend Mark for color and cuts.

Curly Hair Doctor
by manuelpaque
I was very self-conscious about my curly hair and used to keep it very short not giving myself a chance to view the natural beauty of it, until I visited Christopher Stanley Salon and had my hair cut by Mauricio Cifuentes. With his magnificent styling techniques and his wise advise he taught me how to keep my curls looking natural and healthy. It is amazing how now, thanks to Mauricio, I get stop on the street by people who cannot stop giving me complements and constantly ask me: " Oh my God! Is that your real hair? It is so beautiful!"

SOOOO Great!
by jennbish1
I was referred to Mark at Christopher Stanley Salon from a friend who had said many a good thing about him. I needed a new look and wanted to go to somebody who would care what I looked like after I left the salon. It was amazing, he took my long damaged hair and cut a cute and adorable bob which made my hair look amazing. I had so many compliments on the new do and have loved trying something new. I don't know about the coloring yet, that will be my next adventure, but I can't wait!
Pros: Cuts amazing
Cons: Price (but not the worst in town).

Worth Every Penny!
by mep22
A few months ago I got a terrible highlighting job that left my hair bleached and dry. My long hair has always been my signature feature, so I was determined to find a quality colorist who could restore it. I found Christopher Stanley Salon on Citysearch and was impressed by the consistently high ratings so I decided to give it a try. I was not disappointed. Maria took the time to explain to me what had been done to my hair before, why it looked the way it did, and what she thought was the best way to fix it. She turned my hair from what I can only describe as "straw-like" to a beautiful, rich auburn that looked as healthy and shiny as it ever has in my life. I couldn't believe the results - I literally couldn't take the smile off my face as it was being blown dry, and I could start to see the color. These guys know what they're doing, and though it's pricey, it's really worth every penny.
Pros: Quality, service, professionalism
Cons: none

Curly Hair Genius
by cakewalk
A friend recommended me to Stanley, whom she simply called a "curly hair genius". After years of botched hair cuts and people who didn't listen when I told them not to cut too much, because the curl means that my hair bounces much higher than straight-haired folks, it was a joy to speak to someone who not only got it, but in fact gave me some superlative advice on product and care also.
Serious kudos to the salon for recommending Kiehls products (which they don't sell) - but which Stanley assured me were what my hair needs. It's truly impressive when someone is prepared to deny the profit motive in the best interests of their customer!
It's time for my hair to be cut again. Instead of putting off that moment, I couldn't wait to pick up the phone.
Pros: Friendly, fun and professional
Cons: the quality cut comes at a quality price!

Fabulous Colorist and Service
by daniellejude
I have been a client of Mark at Christopher Stanley Salon for almost one year. I have tried several different colorists in NYC, Connecticut and Boston and he is by far the best I have encountered. In fact, I do not even live ion NYC and I make special trips from Boston to have him work on my color. I would highly recommend him, as he is quite trendy with his work, particularly in respect to foils. Moreover, I am a very particular person about my color, and Mark really listens, gives excellent advice and truly helps an individual achieve the look that?s fits them best. He is fabulous and I am very pleased. The service and people who work at Christopher Stanley are wonderful and every time I go there I have a first rate experience.
Pros: Fabulous Highlights!

The best highlights ever!!!
by chrislil22
After 2 years of dark hair, I decided to start lightening it again last summer. I was spending a few weeks in Europe and wanted to be blonde again! I went to my usual salon and instructed my girl to highlight it. I hated it, and went back the next day so she could fix it. I wasn't thrilled with her repairs, but there was nothing more I could do since I was leaving for vacation in a few days. I went back when I returned for a touch-up (I needed one by then) and again walked away miserable and again went back the next day for her to fix it. It happened 3 more times after that. She just couldn't get it right. By the time the holidays rolled around I was beside myself. I needed another highlight and dreaded going back to my girl. I even considered darkening it again just to avoid the disappointment. Citysearch brought me to Christopher Stanley...and ultimately Maria, who gave me the best highlights I've ever had. She knew right away what I wanted and got it right the first time. She was completely professional, easy-going, patient, understanding, and eager to please. It's been 6 weeks since I've been there, and my hair still looks beautiful. I will never go anywhere else!! Definitely worth every penny!!!
Pros: Friendly, accommodating, professional, experienced, patient, understanding
Cons: pricey...but worth it.

"Who did this to your hair?"
by justplainkate
"These layers are cut backwards. That's why your hair is growing in stringy. Who did this to your hair?" My regular Madison Ave stylist asked several months after my visit to Christopher Stanley's 22nd St salon.
I lied. I said it I was living Paris and clearly something got lost in translation. It was a classic round 2 truths and a lie: yes, I lived in Paris until late last June. And, yes, lost of things got lost in translation. But, no, the salon "who did this" is in Paris. It?s on 22nd St. I didn't want to admit I had cheated on him locally. An international affair seemed more forgivable. I bet he would have been surprised that liaison was local, that the botched job was done by a competing elite New York City salon, that the cut came from the staff at the supposedly spectacular Christopher Stanley salon.
I went there last summer not long after I got back from Paris, referred by a friend from DC to a stylist who had recently worked in Washington and excellent CitySearch reviews. Clearly, things did not go so well. Not only did it grow out poorly, it really wasn't a very good haircut at the time. Months later, in back in Midtown, my stylist observed, ?this must have been had to maintain?" I nodded. It had been very hard. Though I looked pretty good when I left the salon, I couldn't copy the cut once when left to self-style (even though I told the guy at Christopher Stanley I needed hair as close to wash-and-wear as he could cut), but I might have been ok with the hard-to-style, high-maintenance hair if it had been a really good haircut. But it just wasn't.
A bad haircut is a bad haircut.
Pros: Great atmosphere, good color
Cons: Bad hair cut

Stanley gives a great haircut!!!
by skrauser
I went to the Christopher Stanley salon on a friend's recommendation. I was told that Stanley was great with curly hair, which mine really needed help with. Needless to say, he gave me a GREAT haircut. It's now 8 weeks since I've seen him, and I don't even feel like I need another haircut right away, which is a miracle because I usually have to get my hair "tamed" every 6 weeks. I highly recommend this salon, and Stanley in particular.

Totally Worth It !!!
by mmlane5
I was pleastantly surprised how wonderful Christopher Stanley Salon is. It's outside appearance is nothing compared to the quality of service and the accomadating atmosphere. From the moment I walked in, it was extremely welcoming and unintimadating from what one would expect from a high end city salon. My appoitment with Paul Cucinello was extremely comfortable, I felt like I had been friends with him for years. I was very concerned about going to a new colorist, as I have had trouble in the past, but I felt at ease putting my head in Paul's hands! : ) I went for what I thought was just going to be my consultation, but ended up starting the process. I can't wait to go blonde!!!!!!
Pros: Parking right across the street. Service is welcoming and friendly.
Cons: on the pricey side.

I have had the same stylist for several years and have always been pretty satisfied with his work. A trainer at my suburban gym told me about the Christopher Stanley salon so I made an appointment and had my hair colored(single process) by Peter. i really think this is the absolute best color I have ever had. It made my pre-existing haircut look better. Plus it was a fun place to get to-great restaurants-and even more fun to be at. I plan on getting my next haircut there . I just don't know what to tell my soon-to-be -former stylist!
Pros: true expertise on hair color, great judgement, pleasant staff, free lemonade
Cons: it's a little pricey but i think it is worth it

by puzzlepiece86
I have had nothing but good experiences at Christopher Stanley Salon. I am a college student and I've been to several salons in the city where I'm treated like a second class citizen by the staff. Everyone at Christohper Stanley is so friendly, and my hair has never looked better! Last year I got Maria to do my color and when it wasn't quite as blonde as I wanted it she let me come in the next day and perfected it for free! My cut has also always looked fantastic and it grows beautifully.

curly hair haven!
by juniperg
I've always hated getting my haircut more than going to any doctor. I've cried in many salon chairs. I have finally found a great salon! I was told to try Noelle for curly hair, and she was great. She really listened to what I wanted. As I was leaving I wanted a little extra gel so I asked another stylist, who happened to be Stanley. He didn't just let me take it- he sat me down in the chair and worked some through my hair, while giving me tips of how to style it and recommended products (that I could buy at the drugstore- not expensive facncy ones!) He went out of his way to make sure I was satisfied when I left the salon. I am actually excited for my next haircut & not dreading it like I used to!

I wouldn't go anywhere else for color...
by nzittman
I have blond hair and fair skin and have been to every big salon in the city. Most colorists seem to want to make me too blond - which completely washes me out...Maria, however, gives me the perfect shade of golden blond with brighter highlights around the face. Not only is she unbelievably talented, but she's also such a doll. I've not yet gotten my hair cut there, but my girlfriend goes to noelle, and swears by her...
You can't go wrong at this fabulous no-attitude nyc salon!
Pros: all talent, no attitude salon

Thank you both and thank you to my sister who recommended them as she has used them for a long time. Debbie Lebeau

Best haircutter ever! Johnnie is awesome - he has been cutting my hair for years and I wouldn't go anywhere else. Each cut is great and best part, is the cuts grow out great too! My only sort of complaint is that the prices are kind of high but the salon itself is not that luxe.
Pros: Amazing haircutter
Cons: Ambience - if I am paying fancy salon prices, the salon might as well be fancier!

pricey but worth it
by sdollybird
I spent a while going to middle of the road salons ($150 highlights etc) & finally ending up nastily over blonded and horrified. After 2 color consultations at other high end salons, Mark at Christopher Stanley did the best job of discussing how to correct my over processed hair, showed me color swatches etc... and ive been seeing him ever since! My highlights are really nicely blended and v natural... these guys take their time, use great techniques.. and the experience is always pleasant and relaxing.. no attitude or intimidation. i love the fact they always sit you down and ask how the color has been/how happy you were with it last time etc. I'm not always the best at articulating what i want.. so i always ask questions before so we get a happy result. It's definately a lot of $$ to lay-out but ive decided i'd rather invest that & know i love it, rather than feel miserable.
Pros: great results - they are patient. Appointment ALWAYS on time
Cons: expensive

I Actually Look Younger! What A Dream!
by fancy66
I went to Christopher Stanley for a cut and color after having a bad experience with a lackluster color job and a cut that made me look like I had a bad hair day everyday. Julie and Noelle were fantastic. Julie did my color - she was great in listening to what I wanted and was easy to talk with. She treated me like I had been a customer for years. My color looks better than it ever has. Noelle gave me a great cut (it even looked great all the next day). She listened to what I wanted and made some great suggestions. I even went short without expecting to and loved the outcome! I actuall ylook younger (what woman wouldn;t want that?). I made an apointment to come back before I left. I got more than I expected and highly recommend this salon and these two stylists.
Pros: Great stylists
Cons: Pricey

do not trust the citysearch reviews!
by meganjklein
I chose this salon based upon its high citysearch ratings, and I was extremely disappointed. I usually go to Bumble & Bumble, but I couldn't get in, and I needed highlights asap, so I strayed to Christopher Stanley. I got a full highlight with Mark, and I thought he did a mediocre job. I still had roots after he was finished - it looked just okay. Also, the people who work there think they are much cooler than they are. The worst part of the whole experience was the price! It was $275 for a full highlight (so $300 something with tax). That is more than I pay for a senior colorist at Bumble & Bumble's dowtown location. I am really not sure why this place gets such great reviews, even given the 20% discount for posting a comment. Maybe everyone who goes here has never visited a good salon before? I will never return here, and I advise anyone swayed by these reviews that if you are going to pay $300 for highlights, go somewhere that is worth it!

Great Salon-Great Service
by sandyscat
I became acquainted with Christopher Stanley Salon after reading someone else's review on City Search - and I was not disappointed. Julie provides me with great color and cuts and I always leave the salon feeling good about myself. Everyone gets personalized attention and the products they reccommend are excellent. I even brought my Rock n' Roll son whose hair is longer than mine and he was extremely pleased with the haircut that he got from Julie and the products used on his hair - and he's very particular!

FINALLY!
by hweinkam
I made a terrible mistake: in attempting to color my hair on my own, I turned it maroon instead of strawberry blond. I had a consultation with Maria and made an appointment. My first visit, I was highly impressed with the friendly and knowlegable staff: Noelle gave me a great cut, and Maria attempted to fix my hair. She did everything she could, but in the end I wasn't satisfied. You may think that's where the story ends...but no! Maria asked me to come back 2 days later as she wasn't satisfied until I was. I went back, and she spent 2 hours working on my hair (gratis!) until it was the perfect shade of strawberry blond that I've been coveting for years. I've FINALLY found "my" salon after being in NY for 4 years and trying every high-end salon in town. Bottom line: RUN-don't walk-to Christopher Stanley.

I had been bouncing around salons for a year, trying to find the right place. I have never been happier with my hair, and I have never gotten so many compliments! Paul is a color god! He knows how to achieve the perfect brunette shade. Julie is so easy to talk to. She listens and then interprets it into a cut that maximize your facial structure and features. I will never go anywhere else in the city!
Pros: Ease of making appointment, welcoming staff, GREAT color and cuts!
Cons: There is no free lunch, you only get what you pay for in this city!

Great haircut
by sgrullon
Love the haircut!!! I prefer my hair to be low maintenance and have been to quite a few salons that gave great blowouts. When I try maintaining the same look at home, its never the same. Stanley understood the type of haircut that fit the shape of my face. Anyone can cut hair but to be a great stylist, it takes skills! The haircut grew out well. Worth the trip into Manhattan!

The best little salon in town!!!
by diane22
The saying "you get what you pay for" is really true. I was going to Christopher Stanley for nine months and I could not make it there in March. So, I went to a place near where I live (Queens) and the person said they could do my hair the same way because they use the same color products. Well, the color was all off for starters, the hair did not feel the same and I could not wait to get back to Mark. When I went to Mark all he said was what happened? He "fixed" me up and everyone I ran into since said to me "oh, you went back to the right guy again". Obviously, people noticed and saw a difference. All I can say is they are worth it. My point was proven that you stick with what works no matter what the price.
Pros: great people, warm and friendly always looking to satisfy you
Cons: people may think it's pricey but really it is worth it.

Great Highlights
by as1027
I have dark blonde hair and wanted to lighten it up a bit with some highlights. I went to Christopher who took the time to really listen to what I wanted and spent a couple hours thoroughly giving me my highlights. He suggested two different blondes to complement my actual color instead of just one-toned highlights. They came out beautifully- exactly how I wanted them and now I no longer have fear of getting highlights.
Pros: Thorough, Great Highlights, Friendly
Cons: Pricey

Stanley gives the best haircuts and does fantastic highlights as well! He does give advice, but he truly listens. I have never had so many compliments on my hair. I have long hair and I color it blonde and the gloss they use keeps my hair soft. I have been to other salons and there is a difference!! Aside from being a talented stylist, he is a great person. Actually everyone at this salon has always been friendly and professional. Book an appointment, you will not regret it!! :)

Awesome service!
by sg77
I checked out christopher stanley after a couple of friends recommended it, and am very glad I did. Peter is just amazing with colors, and although I just went in for a single process, he actually threw in a few highlights on the top of the head where my highlights had grown out cause it had been 3 months since I got them done. And all this at no extra cost! The staff is not only very knowledgeble, but they take their time with you, and really make you feel special in the process :) Would totally recommend Peter if anyone's looking to get highlights or any sort of color correction done! I am going back again in 4 weeks :)
Pros: Friendly and knowledgeble staff, great customer service, and the apprentice cuts and color an awesome bargain!
Cons: Can be a bit pricey if you go for the non-apprentice services!

Really listens
by edibar
If you want someone who will really listen to what you want, you should go no further. Before going to Christopher Stanley, I had been going to a stylist for years who did a competent job with my highlights and cut, but I really wanted someone who would listen to what I wanted and who could do different things with my cut and highlights. I tried someone else, had a bad experience, and thought I would not venture beyond my tried and true stylist again. Then I got several recommendations for Mark at Christopher Stanley and read all the superb reviews about him on CitySearch. So, I decided to give him a try. He spends a lot of time listening to you, thinking about the right color of highlights to complement your complexion and the right cut to complement your face. And the results were fantastic. I'm looking no further - I just wish I had tried him sooner.

a few days before my wedding my usually trusted stylist messed up completely and left me with a horrible haircut. my best friend booked me in to see stanley - best decision ever!
stanley gave me a great consultation about my hair, my style, etc. and a fantastic haircut. needless to say i've been coming back ever since. his cuts always look beautiful and grow out so well that you don't need to go back for months. i've had long, short, medium, and long again hair, and each look was great!
i even took my mom to see him - and she came out with a completely new style looking beautiful, natural, and about 10 years younger.
anyone unsure about their current cut - i can only recommend to go see stanley.

Best haircut in my life
by annecosgrove
Stanley has given me the best haircut and it has made a huge difference to my hair. He not only gave me great tips regarding hair cure but gave me a great cut with subtle layers that makes is much fuller and easy to wear down. I have long, thin hair and did not think a cut would make a difference but it does and although it is not cheap, it is well worth the investment.

Worth it!
by jrswimmer
I have been using the salon for the past year and am quite pleased. Noelle really is a magician when it comes to cutting hair. It always looks great, and she is full of styling tips to keep it that way. So far I have had only single process coloring, which was fine, very natural and healthy looking. Friends who have had highlights done there always look fantastic afterwards. It can be very busy there, so it is important to be on time, as I learned once the hard way. I was admittedly quite late, and Noelle couldn't finish the blowdrying since other clients were waiting. They gave me a stand-in, who unfortunately did a sub-par job, and the price of the cut remained the same, of course. So, if you are going to spend the money on this salon, come on time, and it should be worth it.
Pros: Excellent cuts, color. Pleasant people.
Cons: Price, can be crowded

I went into Christopher Stanley Salon because of some serious damage from another salon. My hair was in horrible condition and it looked even worse. Everyone was so kind, and Christopher and his team healed my hair and made it look fabulous!!! It was a win win situation. Not to mention, he snuck me into his bussy day so that I didnt have to go another day with hair from hell. I have alot of respect for the team at Christopher Stanley.

Blonde Highlights
by tp4
After reading all these great reviews, I guess I should give it a try. I'd like to get some blonde highlights and so far I have only been disappointed (all my previous highlights done in NY turned out to be orange). So I can't wait to try this salon! I'll let you know..
