Ratings_icons Ferrara Bakery & Cafe is good for tourists

Patti W. | insider Insider | Rank: 21,533

Good desert and great location but usually very long line ups. It is expensive but is a well known touristy thing to do if you are a tourist - a NY experience but not worth it for a local.

Ratings_icons Not good

Vanessa K.

Everything looked good. Service was good. My friend and I each tried one of the cakes. Though they were presented well, they were tasteless--almost like prepackaged supermarket varieties. It was very disappointing to both of us.To top it off, the bill (with tip) came to $34. For my half, I literally paid $17 for a piece of cake with a scoop of gelato, I was disgusted.I got a much better dessert at HK restaurant in Hell's Kitchen last week, and it was half the price. I'd never go back here.

Ratings_icons Ferrara's

Carrie K. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,203

This place is really popular in Little Italy as well as Chinatown itself. It's so popular that you have to wait for something as small as a pastry or a cake or ice cream or coffee. But, if it's the atmosphere that you're into checking out, this is definitely one of the spots you should go to. It's very nice and has a huge billboard outside that makes it look like a fancy restaurant rather than a bakery.

Ratings_icons classic touristy Italian bakery in NY

Sarah C. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 5,756

Ferrara Bakery & Cafe is a good place to go for dessert after dinner in Chinatown or Little Italy. Expect to wait for a table when the cafe is busy and don't expect great service. I like the eclairs, cannolis, bavarian cream puffs, fruit tarts, and gelato. They have a smaller midtown location, but they don't bake pastries there.

PROS: eclairs, cannolis, bavarian cream puffs, fruit tarts, gelato
CONS: service, wait

Ratings_icons Ferrara Bakery is the greatest! There Key lime Tart and Tiramisu are great ...and gelato

nan8986

First i would like to disagree with the review where the gentleman stated that the Key lie "pie" was horrible. I have been going to Ferrara's for at least 20 years and i enjoy all their desserts in fact I think i know there menu by hard lol. Ferrara's doesn't even make a key lime pie maybe this gentleman went to La bella ferrara which many people go to thinking they went to Ferrara Bakery but these two pastry shops are NOT the same. I know because by mistake i went to Ferrara La Bella thinking i was at Ferrara Bakery and there pastries were horrible. Ferrara bakery makes a key lime *tart* which is great but not a pie.

I love all their pastries and cakes but i must say my favorite item is their TIRAMISU. It is the best tiramsiu ever! Everyone should try it !!!

Pros: the best TIRAMISU ever!!!

Cons: often gets confused with La bella Ferrara which is horrible.ferrara bakery has better quality

Ratings_icons Horrible pastries, Horrible service

I never wrote reviews in my life but the experience I had here was 'extraordinary' I feel obligated to inform other people. Me and my friend ordered gelato and key lime pie here and the gelato was okay, too sugary for my taste, but the key lime pie was too bad that both of us didn't want to touch it after the first bite. The texture was wrong, smell was wrong, and it didn't even taste like a normal tart. I talked to the manager and tried to be polite but he was only being defensive and not listening to me at all-saying ' oh, but did you try this before?' ' You're full, that's why it doesn't taste good' and just walked away. I am a desert maniac and I can eat the whole table after a meal if its that good, but the key lime pie was just plainly bad and weird. Not to mention that their attitude was terrible. They're on a good location, have a cute interior and decorations, but if you care about what you're eating, stay away from this place!

Pros: Nice looks overall

Cons: Bad pastries, terrible service

Ratings_icons Nice Name But Not So Good Pasteries & Service.

saywhatgirl

Everyone keeps saying it's so good there. So I finally went last Thursday night. The service girl was pretty rude and chewing her gum like a farm animal. The mini pastries wasn't that great as everyone amp it to be. I had much better pasteries & cookies at Veniero's. Also it's very pricey. I guess it's for the rent.

Pros: Nice place and location

Cons: bad pastries, bad serivce and expensive

Ratings_icons Best Lobster Tails Anywhere!!

cafecritic

I must say that the lobster tails are the best I have had anywhere and I have been to many pastry shops over a wide area. The pastry is crispy and the cream is like no other I have ever tasted anywhere else. It tastes like a mixture of ricotta and a yellow custard, light & smooth with vanilla overtones. I must add that the cannoli are NOT the best I have tasted that award still goes to Bensonhurst, Brooklyn where most are made as you would find in Sicily. Lobster tails are best enjoyed on a cool dry day as that type pastry easily absorbs mositure on a humid day and gets soggy easily.

Pros: Coconut Macaroons & Lobster Tails

Cons: Expensive

Ratings_icons New attitude needed - or maybe just more training

Well... my review was initially 500 words long, but I am only allowed 150. So I am going to keep it short. I would compare our waiter to an extremley annoyed dybbuk chained to his job pretending to like it... he was being diplomatically rude, if you know what I mean. The self proclaimed manager was just the same, so to avoid going down to her level I just told her that she was right and I was wrong (wait... isn't that supposed to be her line?). Maybe they were just annoyed that five Asian ladies had come on the day after Thanksgiving and make them work... or maybe we were stinky... sniff sniff... i think I smell fine :)

Pros: pastries

Cons: Questionable Service, Questionable Manager, Bad waiter

Ratings_icons A Real "Treat"

Go to Ferrara's after a big meal or for a nice snack. Located in the heart of the Little Italy area, it attract hordes of people every week. Make sure you can beat the lines so you get the freshest items available. Highly recommended for folks who ache for seats and have a sweet tooth like no other.

Pros: Desserts, Service

Cons: Crowded

Ratings_icons Come on an empty stomach

Excellent bavarian mignon cream puffs. The napoleons, and rainbow cookies are pretty good too. The eclairs are so-so as are some of the pastries such as the chocolate mousse that look much better than they taste. The gelato was good one visit but tasted watered down the next. If you're eating at the cafe inside, the service is variable. Some servers are pleasant enough but some others seem to be unhappy to be at work to put it mildly.

Pros: Good pastries, Big selection

Ratings_icons canneoli's !

mickeyfickey

had to have the canneolis. the chocolate ones are good too.

try the guava sorbet the next time you're there. just make sure it's not melting.

What can you say, it's a pastry lover's dream. The pastries are prepared with much care and the cream could'nt be better. I highly recommend bringing visitors here as they will be impressed. Try the tarts, mousses, and ofcourse, the canolis!!!

Pros: Delicious

Cons: Short wait

Ratings_icons Worth a special trip

nick_of_time

Every Christmas my father used to drive from Long Island to get pastries from Ferrara's. Now, when I visit NYC I never miss a chance to go back. The cannoli is superb. So's the tiramasu. The rum balls melt in your mouth. And the cookies with the pine nuts can't be beat. Go to Lombardi's for pizza and Ferrara's for dessert and you won't be disappointed. I hear Ferrara's has opened a branch on Broadway but haven't tried it yet. If it's as good as the original, it will be a real treat.

Pros: authentic, delicious, consistent

Ratings_icons an oldie but not a goodie

The orginal owners must be turing over in their respective graves. THe service and staff was simply terrible!! The pastries tasted like they had been in the showcase for trwo weeks and the coffee was the last straw, it tasted a little better than it smelled. We did however find a delicious bakery off of Canal st and Mulberry the next called La Bellla Ferrera, no relation and it was La Bella. The staff was friendly and service was great. The cakes and dessert was unreal, probably the best I have ever had. I spoke with the owner and told him to sell his stuff to Ferrerra the might do better, he laughed but didn't have anything bad to say about them, I sure do and La bella prices were even better.
