Imagine if your great uncle had a restaurant. And the place is so outdated, so decrepit, reeking of moth balls....

This would be the place. From the decor to the food it is horrible. I almost imagine the dessert menu would have ribbon candy on it.

I didn't stick around that long. No air conditioner, no food, and you don't eat oysters in 90 degree temperature. You will get immensely sick. For your health and sanity you need to stay away.

Pros: it won't be long now.

Cons: how much time do you have?

Went to Shaffer City for oysters. Picked up the menu and noticed that they were serving sub par oysters. Oysters from Virginia, known throughout the Oyster world as a dirty sub par oyster.

CXannot believe that they would even put this on the menu, they cost about 20 cents each and they charge $3.00.

Avoid this oplace at all costs,. the rest of the food is mediocre at best.

Go to the Grand Central Oyster Bar for Oysters. And for god sakes don't make yourself sick on Virginias.

Ok, so the oysters are many and super fresh and extremely delicious, but alas really too expensive.
The beers are great and the bartender really knows his stuff.
I had the scallops - which were fine but nothing to write home about, with the mushroom risotto - which was very close to perfection aside from a tad too much salt.
The mashed potatoes I wish I skipped because honestly I make them at home except much tastier and cheaper. The baked oysters with the spinach were phenomenal though. Do try those!
Would come back for the happy hour!

Pros: beer, oysters, service

Cons: price

Hopped in there with my buddy for some beer and oysters.

It was happy hour! and we took advantage of that.
Oysters are tasty, especially for 1.50 each during early times. beer is ok. waitress was friendly.

I ordered clam chowder which was $9. It tasted like nothing. Campbell's soup might taste better. I looked around for other people's food, they looked plastic.

My advise is, go there for some oysters and possibly some beer and wine during happy hour. but the full meal might not be worth your time or money.

we each had three beers, which was half priced. and 8 oysters. and a soup. total came to be around $50. Can't really complain for the joint is in really center of the town..
I might go back later for more oysters, but won't be a regular.

Pros: Happy hour

Cons: generally pricy, tasteless food

I went there for Valentine's Day and ordered scallops over polenta. There was so much salt and pepper over the whole dish that it was really unbelievable. I should have returned it but couldn't be bothered because of my company. I believe one would over salt to mask less than fresh seafood. As for the $3 oysters, in this economy, there are comparable seafood restaurants in the area that are offering $1 oysters at happy hour.

Pros: low keyed atmosphere

The prices are a bit steep but the food was really great. I guess this is a case of you get what you pay for. I really enjoyed eating there and will be back for certain.

This place has an unfortunate name... but the food is really good. I used to go here with my work friends after work for dinner. The atmosphere is casual, but nice. It's not too loud. Good place for talking and eating.

I agree with what other says about the price, I feel $3 dollars per oysters are somehow expensive too. However I think if you are seafood lover, and addict to oysters, then you have to go to Shaffer and at least taste their food one time. This place is worth to try it.

Before I went to Shaffer, I thought oyster is just Oyster, only one kind. However I never know there are so many different kinds of oysters from both the Atlantic and the Pacific. The oyster is $3 each, a little bit expensive, but the quality is really good. You never need to worry about any diarrhea problem, after you eat it. Well during their happy hours oysters are only $1.50 each, therefore I definitely will go back again with couple of my friends during that time.

If you are oyster Lover, and you really like to try different kinds of oysters then Shaffer City is your best choices. The quality of oysters is really good and fresh, you have no worries about diarrhea after you taste it. Going for happy hour is definitely a good idea because oysters are half off. A cold beer and some eats at Shaffer City is my favorite place after Work

My friends and I went to Shaffer City last Saturday. It was our first time and we all like it. The place was great and they did have a huge selection of oysters. The raw oyster is very fresh therefore if you are a huge oyster fan, it is really nice for you to try everything. I definitely will go back to Shaffer again.

I love to eat raw oysters, and I always afraid to have oysters which are not fresh. I am very picky about the quality of raw oysters because the stale oysters make me puke and diarrhea all the time. I think the quality of raw oysters in Shaffer City is really good; I don??t have any bad feeling about their food. Shaffer City is my favorite restaurant in the City.

I went there for lunch as I saw they have a fixed price of $15 for lunch. The food was really good, it included a soup, a salad, some oysters, and an entree. I could barely finish the whole meal.

The place is a living breathing health code nightmare. There was hair in the oysters and the manager was so disrespectful and condescending. I could go on and on about the terrible service but I will leave you with this image....

The manager took his grubby little fingers put them in my food to search for other things...thinking it was cute. My date was mortified and we left right away.

Stay away and check out a more sterile environment.

I decided to stop by Shaffer??s during a trip to Manhattan and the experience was great. I received fine service and the bass I order was well prepared. In the end, I enjoyed the dessert as much as the bass. The next chance I have to go to Manhattan; I??ll definitely have to go back to Shaffer??s.

****** Stale Fish******
The atmosphere leaves something to be desired as does the food. The place is falling apart. The tables look to be from some garage sale.
My appetizer tasted like it was prefrozen and then thawed- not fresh at all. The fish entree was tasteless and the sides are presented poorly and in tons of heavy cream. No bread served at table, no butter...

Save your money and find another fish place.

Pros: It's near a hospital

This place looks to be on it's last legs.

I order a platter of oysters ($36) no crackers, no vinegar/red wine sauce, and the bartender has zero information about what I am about to eat. I sat in the front area by the bar and the place is dead yet no service.

The menu looks incomplete, they are relying on the wait staff to give you your specials---soup, salad, fish of the day....I overhear a table next to us complaining about happy hour rip-off (no idea what was problem, just that they would not stop complaining.) We split an entree and didn't even bother to finish it. Scallops were rubber. All in all a pretty horrible experience.
Hmm I am thinking something must have been off that day, or maybe it was "one of those days"

I will give this place another chance but be weary of the prices. Too steep for the decor and service.

The previous reviewer is right. $3 for an oyster (a good oyster) might be expensive but you get what you pay for.

Unfortunately, the rest of the food is so awful that there is no reason to stick around. Everything else on the menu is fried. It is cheap and cheap looking. The bathrooms are so bad that you will be umm disturbed while you are in there. There are no locks on the doors or more specifically they are broken.

The place is also closed around 9 30. It is dead after 9 pm on a friday night. Not something you want to do in NYC. But, it's more of a bar than restaurant which is fine. Happy Hour is a nice little niche for this place. Just not a place to dine.

Eat your oysters and then go have dinner elsewhere.

My friend and I stopped by for beer and oysters, so my comments only reflect the oysters. The staff was extremely helpful in describing the taste of each specific oyster. We ended up just getting 3 dozen of his choosing, all of which were amazing. I eat oysters whenever and wherever I can, and this place is one of the best in the city.
I personally don't think that $3/oyster is that bad. The quality is exceptional and I don't worry for one second that they might be a stomach turner. If the other reviewer is more comfortable paying $1 an oyster somewhere else, be my guest. I'll stick with Shaffer's.

I took my fiance to this restaurant last night for his birthday, thinking it would be a nice, relaxed, but romantic place to celebrate. We walked in and instantly we knew we were in the wrong place. It was essentially a pub with a very limited seafood menu (side note: the menus had stains on them). I asked for a table in the rear dining room, because that was what the images on the website showed--a nicely appointed, rear dining room area with romantic lighting--the bartender told us the back was a mess and offered us a table by the restrooms. I was so embarrassed! I couldn't believe that the place looked so bad. I felt tricked by their website and all of the previous reviews on this site. We left and I quickly made reservations at Blue Fin. We didn't try the food so I can't comment on that but the ambiance is not for anyone looking for a nice place to eat.

I've been wanting to try this restaurant as I just moved to the neighborhood. Well, I finally did and it was wonderful. Great oyster and beer selection and my salmon entree was prepared just right. Our server was super friendly and helpful with recommendations. I'll definitely be going back. Much better than Black Pearl (which is close by) and a lot less crowded than BLT Fish.

I'm relatively new to raw oysters, and I was extremely pleased with the seperate descriptive menu. The decor was inelegant but cozy and romantic. The lighting and brassieres really contributed to the ambience. The service was outstanding. Our waitress was humorous and patient, and the bus staff were attentive and prompt. And the oysters themselves were exactly what I was looking for. Each one was like taking a swim in the ocean. Looking forward to going back.

I have to say, I stumbled in on a whim one afternoon waiting for my boyfriend to get off work, and fell in love! Not only are the bartenders extremely friendly and attentive, but they know all about the oysters and assist in your selections. The first time we had Gabe, very nice, and the second time it was an Asian girl, I don't know her name (sorry!). She was especially sweet, but they were both pretty cool. I must disagree with the review below me, I found the owner to be delightful! Not only is he hilarious, but he remembered me from the time I came in before, which is always nice. The oysters are awesome, and half price wine for happy hour. Can't think of a better place to unwind after a day at the office, will be back for sure!

First time I ever ate at the place and it was a lark. I strolled by earlier in the afternoon and ran across it. It is pretty nondescript, but made reservations for later on in the night. A casual place so I was not really going in with high expectations. I have to say the service was insane. I used to work at City Crab for several years and this guy was all over anyone I ever worked with. As I said I worked in a seafood place and not easily impressed but the food coming at me was awesome. The oysters are the best I ever had and the way the server presented them and helped me along with choosing the assortment was so fun. My date and I had a blast and then we had a drink with our waiter at the bar. I'm sorry but that type of conversation and interaction just does not happen at the big restaurants in Union Sq. I don't want to draw any negative attention to the owner but the guy is a loud mouth. I guess all in all it was an amazing dining expierence but the owner needs to pipe down at yelling at the staff. He may think he is in charge but making fun of the busboys deters from our dining pleasure. It's a restaurant not boot camp.

Went here with a big group to celebrate a friend's dinner. The owner was very hospitable and friendly and came out often to check on us. He told us he would take care of the appetizers and all we had to do was order the entree. What wasnt made clear was that we would have to pay for all the appetizers that he ordered for us at the end of the meal (which basically was 3 of everything on the menu). Even so, the food and atmosphere was good. What ruined the dinner was the waitress. She was really obnoxious and had no idea what was going on when we were trying to order. I asked her for sugar and she replied -"thank you". When it came time to order dessert, we had to wave her down while she was having a glass of wine at the bar. To top it all off, we split the bill, half with cash and half with credit card. I'm very meticulous with the bill and counted the cash three times before giving it to the waitress and asking her to put the balance on the credit card. When the receipt came back , she had overcharged us. I told her this and her and the bartender insitied that it was the right amount and even showed us the cash that we had given. But how could we trust the the cash was the right amount when he had already put it into the register??? That doesnt make any sense. So the whole evening was ruined because of this less than professional waitress and the bartender who decided to charge us extra for an already over-priced meal.

Went here with a big group to celebrate a friend's dinner. The owner was very hospitable and friendly and came out often to check on us. Pros: Owner very friendly

Cons: Poor waitstaff, over-charged

All I'm gonna say is, this place stinks. Spend your money elsewhere. There are about 10 other places in this city that serve better, fresher, and more reasonably priced seafood, with much, much better service and atmosphere. Want some suggestions? Mermaid, Black Pearl, Dock's, for starters

Pros: None I can think of

Cons: The restaurant itself.

A real welcoming place. We were greeted by the owner whose colorful personality and attentiveness started off an enjoyable visit. (he stopped by after we ordered and told us our dinner selections were great choices)The waitress was friendly and polite and right there when needed. The wine list was varied and the food was delish! We had the Shaffer oysters and some Littleneck clams, both of which were extremely fresh and tasted great. The lobster bisque soup was amongst the best we had ever had. The seared scallops with mushroom risotto was melt in your mouth amazing (maybe a bit buttery for some)
All in all a great place. We will definitetly be back!

Granted the owner is loud and yes he is abrasive but the product is really top notch. You will not find fresher oysters. I have been coming to the restaurant for the last 3 years and have found the food incredibly consistent. I have never had a bad oyster and the wine list is amazing. Yes, the owner is a pain and really an attention black hole continually interrupting you and yelling at the staff but the guy knows oysters. A little note about the staff and in particular the waiters. There really is no better pat on the back in going to your nabe' restaurant and the staff knowing who you are. There is a waiter there that not only recognizes me (a great plus when bringing out of towners or clients) but what I drank the last time I was there. If you want a real New York experience at a local hangout this place can't be beat.

The clams and oysters here are pretty good, no complaints.
The entrees are probably on par with a discount cruise.
There is no tap beer, which I really prefer with a raw bar.
Wine list was limted, and they didn't have a few that we asked for.
The owner is about as pleasant as a prison guard. He was drunk and just making obnoxious comments. I mean I'm a guy who works around other guys and accustomed to this kind of stuff, but some guys are just abrasive and just not that funny, simply unpleasant to be around. I've read reports about this guy and wanted to try to give him the benefit of the doubt, but he really is as angry, drunk and silly as can be.
In summary, if you want some raw bar, the place is not bad, if you are willing to deal with the dumb owner and mediocre entrees. I would recommend sitting at the bar and if the bald, middle aged bandanna wearing owner comes by, just look forward, or he will try to dassle you with an idiotic comment that may ruin your meal.

Pros: decent raw bar

Cons: owner's personality could ruin a meal

HORRIBLE sums it up. The food was OK-BAD...but to pay such high prices for just OK-BAD food is not worth it. I could of just went to a diner. I would have gotten better service at a diner too. The waiter was so obnoxious and had a big attitude problem. He was annoyed that our party was big -- 10 ppl. But HELLO -- that's your job, if you don't like it, quit! Mr. Shaffer himself came up to say hello to the bday girl, but he had ulterior motives. He basically forced appetizers on us w/o consulting the rest of the group. We ended up paying for all these appetizers that no one even wanted to order. Plus, the shrimp cocktail was overcooked. And, the tuna was overcooked. Alot of ppl. did not like their entrees. Bad food, bad service, bad decor made this place a huge disappointment. Good thing the night was saved by lots of drinking afterwards.

Pros: NONE whatsoever

Cons: This establishment

the outside decor of this place is horrible. it looks like some little ugly store on some random street. but once u enter its nice. the hostess was cute and nice. we were seated promptly and had the table waiting for us(made reservations the night before) The interior of this place is very nice and i liked the window into the kitchen - we sat directly across from that window. The prices were high, but nothing out of the ordinary and we expected it to be pricey. the food was AMAZING!! the mashed potatoes with shrimp was great! the drinks were okay, nothing out of the ordinary, their wine menu was amazing and very large - and i mean LARGE, about 6 pages worth. the oysters were great and fresh, for the most part. the deserts are very tasty, the cheesecake was GREAT. the steak which i ordered medium rare was perfect and was right on the spot. the long island iced tea went great with the food and after the steak and mashed potatoes with shrimp. I decided to wash it all down and let it marinate in some Jonhy Walker Black Label - 11 bucks for a glass on the rocks. All in all, a well worth it experience. we had 8 people and the bill came out 500 - 600 bucks. A very fun night to celebrate our friends birthday!
will come back here again when I have some big occasion.

Cons: outside decor is bad, but who cares. could make the drinks a bit cheaper or make them larger at least...

I rarely take the time to write a review, but I just had to stop and rave about Shaffer City. The owner, Jay, and our server/bartender, Harley, gave me and my friends the best dining experience. My party of 8 had reservations there for me and my bf's joint bday celebration. We were promptly seated on a Sat nite even though only 3 of us initially showed up, unlike other places that make you wait for your entire party to arrive. Jay and Harley made sure we had a great time and entertained us with their stories and outgoing personalities, asides from providing us with terrific table service. It was clear that Jay treated everyone who worked there as family. Now about the food...I don't know much about raw oysters and clams (so many varieties!) so I left it up to my friends who ordered 2 tiers of shellfish on ice as a starter - DELICIOUS. The raw fare was so fresh and clean tasting. I didn't bite into one single grain of sand and each was perfectly briny. The little cooked mussels were so good topped with a savory sauce. The shrimp cocktail was the standard fare but delicious nonetheless, good-sized and cooked just right. I had the roasted skate which had the texture and taste of crabmeat...deliciously unique but it was unfortunately a tad too salty for my palate. I would definately try it again. We were so full we didn't think we could possibly have dessert, but they were determined to give us a sweet ending to our celebration so we ordered a mouthwatering mango sorbet and the chocolate souffle. Harley also brought out the cheesecake and creme brulee which he promptly said were all on the house. Everything was so good we had no problem downing them even with our full bellies. I must say the chocolate souffle was my favorite. Rich and decadent cake on the outside with a molten chocolately center. He capped our meal with a fruity muscat wine for me and my bf and limoncello shots for everyone. Kudos to Jay and Harley for a memorable bday dinner!

Creative and talented people often inspire their critics as well as their admirers. Such may be the case with Jay Shaffer, the owner/chef/host and lightning rod at this restaurant. Of all the citysearch reviews I?ve read of NYC restaurants, the Shaffer City reviews are the most personal, and it makes me wonder why. But I note that even the nastiest of the critical commentaries manage to acknowledge the quality of the grub. I?ve taken groups to Shaffer?s on two occasions (March & November 2006) and each time my companions were full of praise. One of the things I really like is that Shaffer changed the menu significantly from time to time. I went looking for the roasted shrimp over risotto I had on my first visit, but discovered it had been replaced with spicy shrimp dumplings with a curry and coconut treatment, a delightful disappointment. With some guidance from the staff, I chose a mid-priced white wine that worked very well. It was a good time and my friends said, ?Put it on you?re A-list.? Shaffer works hard at being who he is, it seems. Call for reservations, ask for Jay Shaffer, make it personal.

I really wanted to love Shaffer City but the service ruined the experience! I was looking forward to my Saturday night reservations all week. The oysters were amazing- so much variety! The shrimp cocktail was ordinary but good. The scallop entree was unbelieveable and unforgetable- delicious! It's a definite must-have!!! However, our server was very unattentive and careless. It wasn't even that busy for a Saturday night- the restaurant was half-full. We constantly needed to flag him down- we didn't get enough oyster forks- twice, our wine glasses sat empty while our bottle of wine was sitting in the bucket, the server spilt the water in the oyster platter on my boyfriend's shoe, etc. I loved the food but would not go back because the service was really awful. I am also reluctant to recommend to friends who wanted to know how the restaurant was- so unfortunate!
