In all my years, I have never been treated with so much respect! I loved everyone at RARE! Besides being the most amazing hair stylist's, it was so much fun! I would recommend RARE to everyone who wants fabulous hair and immpeccable service! Take it from me until you've been there, you don't know what you've been missing!

I walked into Rare as I was recommended by a friend. The girl who greeted me was so kind, took my coat and asked me if I wanted tea, water, juice. She was very pretty and had great hair! The space is open and very clean. They have the latest magazines to read while you wait, which is not that long. I only waited for 5 minutes before I was taken in for my haircut and highlights. All the stylists said hello to me and were very friendly. The girl who cut and colored my hair was very helpful and made suggestions about color and what haircut would suit my face shape. She was friendly as were all the other stylists. There is also a girl who threads eyebrows while your color is setting!!!

After my cut, color and blowout the owner of the salon came over to introduce herself, Ruth, and complemented my stylist. It shows that she really cares about her employees and the work that they do.
All the stylists here are not only hairdressers but are artists as well. I have had many people on the street compliment me on my hair and color. I highly recommend this salon. If you want great service, a pleasant experience, and fantastic hair go to Rare!

This is my favorite place to get my hair done. I go here at least twice a month for everything from blowouts to highlights. I have had my hair done by everyone there and you can feel safe sitting in anyone's chair. Its a great place to walk in and be sure you're going to leave with an amazing new look. I've had my hair lightened, darkened, shortened and extended. Updos, blowouts, wavysets and party styles - anyone can make you look incredible!!!

If you are worried about money - don't be here! You get the same quality as those high end salons and a far more reasonable price. I've been to everywhere on Fifth avenue, and my hair usually costs at least a third the price at Rare, and looks just as great!

I just returned from having Aiko color my hair and look like I should be on a Pantene commercial!

While I never take the time to write reviews on these boards, I felt compelled to write about how fantastic Aiko has made my hair look. I entered the salon today with a frizzy, drab, brown mess and left with shiny, smooth beautiful hair.

The stylist was committed to insuring that my hair be exactly what I wanted, and made my hair look prettier than it ever has before.

I recommend this stylist in the highest possible terms! My cut and color are fabulous whenever I visit her, and the salon is lovely.

I have to say that my time at Rare was awesome. I have never been completely happy about a hair cut....at 24. Not only is my hair awesome, but I am actually excited to get it cut again. The shop is great, it's right around the block, and out of the hustle and bustle. If you want to relax AND get an awesome cut that people notice, go to Rare!

i always had a hard time finding a good colorist.....i had bad experiences in NYC.....until i found this girl with her firey hair at Rare.... she was extremely genuine and sweet and it was a real pleasure spending 4 hours under her professional hands. she first asked me what i wanted then gave me her opinion taking in the consideration of the color of my eyes and skin. i felt right away that she was gonna make me prettier so i just let her do her thing without any pressure .she started coloring my hair explaining step by step to me why she was putting the product in my hair...that's unusual because most of the time they do their thing without telling you what they are doing...ohhhh i had a great massage while she was washing my hair!!!!
right away when i left the place i compliments starting pouring in, so i knew already that she did a good job but she also made me prettier!!!!
not to forgot the place ....Ruth is just amazing she has her own way to make you feel at home...and the whole team is just very thoughtful and kind !!!! great team energy and work!!!!!!!
i am very happy i found my stylist, colorist, Fatima!!

I decided to go to Rare based on a recommendation of a friend whom came back looking beautiful I mean amazing really so I was super excited to get my fabulous cut and color. First I went for the cut and although it wasn't very inventive or exciting it was a good cut in that my hair looked healthy. The cut set me back bout 85 bucks so I made an appointment to get color because that's what really blew me away with my friend.
I had THE worst experience. 6 hrs into my appointment I had lowlights and highlights and a color gloss put in about 4 different times because the "color" wasn't right and by right I mean my hair kept coming out the same so much so that everyone that worked there kept checking and conversing on my hair with puzzled looks and suggestions. I had asked for my hair to be a chocolate brown color with facets of reds and other browns I specifically said no blond most stylists do blond and nothing else I wanted rare hair. I now had goldish lights...Unpleased with now having wasted 6hrs and having my hair fried to unbelievable measure I left for work and was told to come back for a "touch up" to make my hair "pop" aka make some sort of difference and this was only after they tried to convince me that it looked "nice" as is. My hair looked exactly the same! granted I do have thick curly dark brown hair this cost me about 300$ So I went back and the color did come out right the next time dark brown with red facets but I was surprised to see they charged me again another 100$!! now me being a non aggressive person I paid the money and since I was sort of happy at this point I figured what the hell why argue. I washed my hair with all the products they had given me to preserve my "reddish" hair which was about 100$ worth of product. In one wash my hair lost all the red and went back to the boring tarnishy gold color I was afraid I would get to begin with. Not 1 person has complimented my hair and I havent gone 2 a salon in 6 months cause I'm afraid to.

Pros: Really cool atmosphere, friendly staff

Cons: I expected to pay top dollar for fab hair.. I paid top dollar for lemon tree quality cut n color

I have been going here for two years and I am convinced that this is the best salon in town. I regularly see one particular stylist but have had my hair cut by a number of other stylists there, including Ruth Roche, the owner. Each haircut was great and exactly what I asked for, but better. Highly recommended.

Aiko gave me a terrible haircut. She didn't listen to me. She didn't seem to be paying attention. She gave me a trim and charged me as if she had actually styled it. NOT RECOMMENDED. Overpriced.

Since having my hair cut by Ruth several years ago, I have become a huge fan of Rare. Ruth and her team are amazing at what they do, and have created a salon environment where you get the best of the best without a pretentious attitude. They really listen to what it is you want, and make sure that you walk out of the salon happy. It is one of the only places in the city that I feel 100% comfortable recommending to friends. Anyone who I have sent to Rare has had a great experience. A haircut is the only thing that you wear everyday, and I can confidently say that Rare is the place to get it!

There clearly is no better salon in New York. Ruth, the owner, is world renouned (check out her website and magazine covers) and gives each customer a cut above the rest. You do not have to be a celebrity to walk out of the salon feeling like one. All members of RARE take great care to listen to what you want and then work with you to create a style that is unique and perfect in every respect. There are no cookie cutter haircuts here. Ruth and Bradley are careful to create a look to fit a person's personality and features. They can transform any one into a fashionista in no time.

Pros: Staff, knowledge, expertise, cost, amazing work

Cons: NONE

.

Pleasant friendly atmosphere, quiet, appointments generally on time.

Ruth's cutting is erratic -- sometimes she's good, when she's harried the cuts can be sloppy.
I suspect she cares about her celeb customers, the "bread and butter" ones simply don't get the same consistently good attention.

Too much money for the quality of the cut.

As a relative newcomer to New York City; Rare is an oasis in the NYC beauty world. Unexpectedly I was able to get into see Rare's owner and now I wouldn't go anywhere else. My color and cut are hip but professional. I get so many compliments that I hestitate to let folks in on my secret. My cut lasts long, the color is rich and natural and yet never boring. The salon is friendly and low key, but clearly on the cutting edge as you'd expect. I'd highly recommend to anyone, but if you're lucky enough to work with Ruth all the better.

I found out about Rare through a friend, and went in desperately after a nightmare haircut and color at a training salon the previous day. They gave me a free consultation on 2 hours notice, then Aiko and Amber squeezed me in that same evening to fix the reddish brown horrible mess that was my hair. They knew exactly what had gone wrong, and knew how to get me back to the natural blonde highlights and short cute cut I had originally wanted. I got the best haircut I have ever had from Aiko, and the best highlighting job from Amber. They are amazing!!

Hands down THE very best hair salon in NYC. Consistently, for over two years now, I leave Rare feeling great about myself. The staff always makes me look beautiful to the point that I feel inspired to take care of myself. My hair looks natural, healthy, stylish - never before has it looked so good!! The artistic talent cannot be found elsewhere. The atmosphere is fun, hip and very relaxing. Always a great place to unwind and revitalize. Honestly, cannot say enough good things. Have recommended to all of my friends. Will transform your appearance and life.

I have followed Ruth for 10 years. She's an award winning (literally) hairdresser. With no ego - Ruth referred me to Bradley. Love him! I've seen him for 2+ years & we evolve my look all the time. I have to look good 'with an edge' for my work - Bradley always tweaks my cut & style. I've not had a disappointing 'do! The staff is cool / very downtown...and I often see models, TV news people in there getting their hair done.

GO TO RARE --

No matter where I went or what I tried, I was never happy with my hair. Upon recommendation of a friend, I tried Rare and got a haircut by Ruth and color by Natasha. Let me just say they know hair! I now have the hair I'd always dreamed of having- more importantly I'm able to make it look that way at home. Rare is worth the expense- you will feel like a million dollars.

I used to get good to great (or at least good) cuts from the owner, Ruth Roche. But over the last several months, I have been getting cuts that look "mallish". People have actually asked me what's wrong with my hair. Is it breaking? Fried? I get depressed as soon as I walk out the door. And forget how I feel after I wash it the frst time.
The color has been getting more and more beige/tan/dishwater, instead of the pretty blonde I requested.
Since Candace left, I don't even care or know which girl is coloring my hair. They stick me with whoever is available. Lest anyone thinks it is my hair (as Ruth said) I now have gotten it corrected at another salon, and Ilove my hair style now. It loks thick, fluffy and hip. I was told to NOT blow-dry it and it looks fabulous. Ruth seems to be sleepwalking lately.

I had dyed my light brown/ dark blonde hair very very very dark brown about 8 months ago, and soon I had terrible roots! I didn't know what to do and i didn't want to bleach it out so i just kept dying it. I ended up with jet black hair with about FOUR layers of color on it. I was freaking out because every salon I went to to ask what to do to get my natural color back gave some long, complicated, extremely expensive, and scarily damaging explanation of what I would have to do... how it was a process, and how i wasn't going to be able to get my natural color back. Luckily my sister ended up hair modeling at Rare and came home with totally natural gorgeous highlights (i.e. Kate Moss), and i decided to go check it out. NATASHA IS AMAZING! I went in and she made me feel totally comfortable. She made the process of lightening my hair sound simple and easy, and I made an appointment immediately. The first day I went in she lightened my hair all over and it cam eout so even and felt really healthy still. The color wasn't red or blotchy at all. I went in 4 days later (having a really great color even for the four days inbetween) and got a full head of highlights. She toned everything and it looks so so so so good!!! I have long hair and even after all the processing I didn't have to lose any length (even though I got a GREAT haircut from ALANA anyway!!!) Its only been 3 days since all of this and I have forgotten I even dyed my hair dark in the first place; I feel like I have myt natural color back! I'm absolutely obsessed with this salon. Natasha really cared about my hair and she didn't get scared with my crazy pickiness about the color I wanted. The atmosphere is great too; no snobbiness AT ALL. I will seriously never go anywhere else! Love it! If you want a natural color this is the place to go for sure!!!!!

Over time, I have slowly graduated from cuts($) to styles($$$). Then, finally asking a well informed actor friend who gets paid in part to be concerned about his looks, he refered me to Ruth Roche, at her Rare Hair Studio. I have that most unmanagble combo of thick, curly hair with collicks. Ruth immediately responded to my hair as if she had been cutting it her whole life, and it usually takes at least 2 or 3 cuts before anyone new understands my hair to some degree. The cuts I have gotten from her have been exactly what I wanted, executed with a degree of understanding that I have never encountered before. I can not say enough about her and her work. There is a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere at Rare, none of that-you're not cool enough to be here-thing going on. The other staff members at Rare are fabulous, and rare in their own right by being friendly, eager to please, and wholly present. The space is nice, clean, bright, and open. What more could you ask? It's a long, long way from my traumatic high school buzzcuts at Astor Pl., baby.

Pros: Best Hair Salon!

Cons: The years it took for me to arrive here!

I get asked out at least 50% more now that I had Alana cut my hair. I wanted to go blonder and every other salon in the city gave me attitude about it and said it wouldn't look flattering. Natasha cranked it up the color a notch as I requested with NO ATTITUDE and it looks fantastic, natural, and better than I imagined! They are all so friendly and it is relatively affordable that it belies Ruth's international reputation. I've sent several friends there and they are Rare converts, as well.

I've been going to Ruth at Rare for the past two years and my hair has never looked better. Ruth does magic with a pair of scissors and I have never gotten so many compliments on my color. Three months after I get my highlights done they still look great.

I've always gotten the same haircut whereever I've gone - I tell them to do whatever they feel is best for my hair and they give me a bob cut. But when I went to Rare - Bradley gave me a fantastic haircut which was modern and flattering. I also hate getting attitude from certain salons - whose stylists act like they are above you - but at Rare everyone was so pleasant and down to earth. It was a great experience overall!

For years a vicious cycle has pervaded my hair life. I'd get a couple of great haircuts from an "expert" who would then give me a couple of boring, mediocre haircuts. It was as if they thought "Why bother putting any effort into it, she's already my client?" This is no longer the situation because I found Bradley at Rare! I've received several haircuts by him now, and I ALWAYS walk out with a new spring in my step. In fact, everything about Rare is great... the staff is super friendly and the atmosphere is lively and unpretentious. I can't wait for my next haircut!

The best cuts I have ever had were by the owner Ruth. In fact, though I am Canadian, while in New York, I got my hair done at RARE.

It is amazing that there can be such a difference in hair cuts. Everyone always comments (and I mean really compliments) when my hair is done by Ruth. We have all had good hair cuts and bad hair cuts but everyone should at least once in their live, treat themselves to a fantastic hair cut by owner Ruth.

Worth the trip.
