I'm sure that everyones experience at a hair salon is different depending on their hairdresser. I had Theresa, who was a new trainee. Not only was her cut and conversation great but it only cost $25! I'm glad to say that I now have a regular hairdresser =)

A number of the hairdressers are Japanese so it can be a good place for people with 'Asian' hair who are looking for hairdressers who understand how to cut their hair. Also, its good for people who are just after an interesting cut.

I went to Hair Mates regularly when I first moved to New York in 1997. Back then, a quiet and older japanese hairstylist named Yuki cut my hair. It was the best haircut ever. Noone I met later in my life cut hair like Yuki. I have lost touch with him and would like a haircut from him. Back then he wore a marijuana-leaf pendant around his neck and was a smoker. He was very quiet and at first did not speak English well (now he does). His was a small-medium built and he was thin. After HM he started working at a salon on Lafayette street for a while. He even made house calls, and then we lost touch after I went to buzz cuts and did not really need him anymore. Now, my hair is long and I need Yuki. Please help me find him.

I used to love this salon because it was cheap ($40), good and cool with hip Japanese hair stylists. Not anymore. They raised their prices and I got the least hip person on the planet to do my hair. I have dark hair and previously tried to dye my bangs white but they just turned blonde. I told this to my stylist and said I wanted them white white white and could she do it? Yes, no problem. Well, I left there with blonde bangs and my eye burning from chemicals being dripped in to it. When I told the assistant doing my bangs that the solution had dripped into my eye and it was burning and I needed to rinse it out NOW, she said, "OK, let me just finish this." This place is bad. Unprofessional, clueless. I'm never returning. Go to Supercuts. Or the Aveda Academy.

Checked this place out after getting a few recommendations. Stylist asked me how I wanted and he delivered. Doesn't talk much but neither do I so that was fine. A couple of things that might deter some, the stylist only cuts your hair while someone else dries it & styles it, Men's haircut that is. 2 different girls washed my hair, one was an attractive number, so I didn't know who to tip.

Downtown location. I brought in a picture of a style I wanted but the stylist not only made my hair look completely different, she actually made my hair look like a 5 year old cut it. It's been two months and people are still greeting me with "oh you got a haircut.....silence..." Only my closest friends have the guts to say, "It's such a bad haircut." When I spoke to the manager, he said I should probably make an appointment with Tomo because he would be the only person who can really do a good job. But even Tomo wouldn't be able to fix this one. It's finally growing out so I can now go somewhere else to fix it. Also, the stylist dropped her scissors many times throughout the cut and wasn't very apologetic at the end. In fact, she said it was probably due to the nature of my hair. Last time I checked, my hair looks just like other asian people's hair. All for $50.

I've just been to Hair Mates for the first time (the Midtown location -- 114 E. 40th St., between Park & Lex). I was curious what the stylist would make of my long, slightly wavy but fine Irish hair (the positive reviews I'd read about Hair Mates seemed to be mainly about Asian hair), but I got exactly the cut I wanted. I've been to a lot of different salons, and while this one didn't have much in the way of amenities, they got the important things right. The stylist was very considerate of what I wanted, and we spent a lot of time talking about the cut at the beginning of the appointment (during the cut, he didn't speak at all, which was fine by me but I know wouldn't appeal to everyone). One negative was that there weren't any assistants working when I went in, so the stylists had to book appointments, etc., while working with clients (they were pretty great at multi-tasking, actually). Overall, I'm really pleased with the cut, and plan to return to the salon for my next one.

Potential customers beware:

Hairmates' time per customer policy: 30 minutes for men, 45 minutes for women

Tomo was my stylist. His cutting would've been satisfactory had he actually spent the time and energy cutting my hair. Instead, the assistant spent 5 minutes washing my hair before and after my haircut (total time thus far: 10 minutes). When Tomo finally did get to cutting my hair, 15 minutes into it, he tells me that he has to attend to his next customer and seats him down in another chair and discusses what he wants. This next customer arrived at least 10 minutes before his appointment time. Then Tomo very quickly "finishes" my hair and asks the assistant to wash my hair, and he's already cutting the next customer. When I come back, he doesn't even look at my hair to finish it up. Instead he tells the assistant to style it, which she botches. Total time that Tomo spent cutting and styling my har: 20 minutes. When I tell Tomo politely that I was insulted that he started on his next customer without finishing his first customer, he doesn't respond. It was actually I who told him "I'm sorry," to which he just nodded. When I told the people at the front desk about it, first they told me that the next customer was scheduled for 12:30 (which would be 45 minutes after my appt). Then when I asked why Tomo started attending to the next customer at 12:10, they said his appointment was at 12:15. They said they would try to make sure this doesn't happen again next time, but it wasn't very convincing.

To make a long story short, if you're fine paying boutique prices ($45 for men and $50 for women) and getting quickie service then this place is for you. But if you expect at minimum of 45 minutes for your haircut, which you should be getting for that price range, then go to Momotaro or some other salon.

It's clear that the people here care more about money and high customer turnover rate than providing professional and courteous service.

i've been going to hairmates since i was an undergrad. i moved to cali for a few years and would come back every so often to get my haircut by jin. after he left, i had not found someone as good but the other stylists have been pretty darn close. now that i live in the city again, i will only trust my hair to them. they seem to understand asian-type hair (i am east indian so my hair is similar to east asian hair). as for other ethnicities, i'm not really sure.

Pros: good value for a nyc salon

Cons: not all the stylists speak english fluently

I've been shopping for a new hairdresser for a while but i haven't been able to find a talented hairdresser who knew how to work with my hair quality. my hair is thick and wavy and there is a lot of it!

so i went into hairmates got an appointment with kozue, and she was just phenomenal!!! she really was a perfectionist with my hair and she knew exactly what to do. i brought in a few pictures showing her what i wanted and she gave me even a better haircut then i could of imagined!

she also didn't talk to me while she was cutting my hair and that's what i prefer, i came in to get a haircut, not find a new best friend.

It came down to $45 for the cut plus tips, which in new york city, is the best bargain ever!

After reading great reviews about Hair Mates, I decided to give it a try. I have never found a salon that made me want to go back a second time, with the exception of Hayato, which was slightly more expensive at $60. So, I made appointments for both me and my boyfriend for a Saturday afternoon. When I arrived, I expected to be greeted by an asian stylist, since they would probably know better than anyone else how to cut asian hair, which is extremely straight and coarse. However, I was greeted by a hispanic girl named Lupe. I decided to go ahead with the cut, giving them the benefit of the doubt. I brought in a picture of what I wanted my hair to look like to make things easier for the stylist. The look I was looking to get was much like my existing style, long tresses with some slight layers. She proceeded to cut my hair with a regular pair of scissors, never even attempting to thin out the bottom with thinning scissors when she was finished, until I asked her to. And even then, she barely made an effort to thin out the bottom, because her next appointment was waiting. As a result, I left the salon with choppy looking ends and layers. Bottom also looked extremely heavy. I could've gotten a better haircut at supercuts. I am planning on going to Hayato sometime soon to get my hair fixed. They are slightly more expensive (at $60 for an associates cut), but so much more worth the money. You get a 10 minute scalp massage and 10 minute shiatsu massage. The stylists there also take the time to make suggestions incase you are asking for a looking not suitable to your face shape. They also advise on how to style your hair after the cut. I regret going cheap on $20 and going to Hair Mates. Never again...

Cons: Does not know how to cut asian hair, non-asian stylists, inexperience

After going back to hair mates for Natalie , and finding out she no longer works there, and making a mistake and having my hair cut by another person I'm not going to mention any names..I googled Natalie's name, She works on Park Ave, at Oasis Day Spa & Salon,
I found her telefon number and made an appointment with her, and she corrected the mistakes and gave me a beautiful haircut, so I'm sticking with her where ever she goes...

Okay, this review is for Hair Mates in the midtown location by grand central. I went there today with great expectations, because a friend had recommended me hair mates in east village. Well, my stylist was terrible! I didn't get his name but he was obviously very inexperienced. First, I told him what I wanted--a simple bob cut with a razor to take off excess weight of my very very thick and corase Asian hair. Well, after he shampooed me (which was nice, the one good thing is that they do a nice shampoo and head massage), he whipped out a regular scissor. I asked him why he is using a scissor and not a razor, and he told me that he didn't have a razor! A stylist that does not own a razor?? That's highly suspect. That' sfine if he is not into using razors, but then he should have told me that he doesn't do razor cuts BEFORE I am sitting in his chair with wet hair so I can decide whether or not I want to stay.

Anyways, so then he says he can do with a scissor "something similar", but I know from experience that only a razor can efficiently and correctly take off excess weight while maintaing a good bob form with my hair. Anyways, it was bad, as expected, and when he dried it and asked me if that was what I am looking for, I promptly told him no and to just stop at that because i didn't want him to do any more cutting.

Meanwhile, the owner of the shop is just sitting around reading newspapers---if he sees a problem, shouldn't he try to come over and fix the situation, like PICK UP A FREAKIN RAZOR?

They only ended up charging me $30 for the $50 regular price, so I basically paid for a really expensive shampoo because the hair looks bad. I made an appointment for another salon for tomorrow!

I read about this place on here actually and decided to give it a shot. Let me explain my hair, very ethnic. Half Korean, half black. It is impossible to find a stylist that actually knows what they're doing and who is not afraid to tackle my hair. I love this salon and my stylist. Brought in a pick of the sleek Nicole Richie-esque bob with bangs I wanted and walked out with exactly that. Friendly and fashionable staff, who know what they're doing and actually LISTEN.......on funny note, it took 2 of them to blowdry my hair pin straight! At first, after they had washed my hair, my stylist looked a little perplexed but she went for it and rocked it out, my hair looks health, it has movement and best of all it's FIERCE...haha

I really like the stylist that cuts my hair. I have been going to the same stylist for over 3 years, which is unusual for me since I am never loyal. (I am sorry if I am not spilling out the name but it's already hard for me to get appointments in.)
I did cheat on my stylist a couple of times. (Since I always hear raves from other people) Two times at Bumble and Bumble and one time at this other Japanese hair salon in Soho. But I still come back to Hairmates. And after reading the reviews, I saw people raved about Jin and I decided to get him to cut my hair. I have natural wavy/curly hair-which I love but he gave me this haircut that left my hair bone straight. I know it sounds strange, but it did happen.
Otherwise Jin is good but not as great as my stylist. Also if you want a stylist that talks to you and hear your troubles....
then this is not a place for you.
They are not rude, but majority of the people here are Japanese-it's because they are shy so don't take it to offense.
Just know that you will come out with an amazing haircut!

I went to this hair salon based on the recommendations. I had a pretty good cut, but the washer got water all over my back/shirt and my stylist had to blow dry my shirt for 10-15 minutes. $40 is a really good value for a good cut, but I might try a different place next time.

A friend of mine got her haircut by Mao and the results were so amazing that I had to go to her too. She spent two hours meticulously cutting my hair (both wet and dry) and did a phenominal job. The haircut was only $40 but looks like it cost $200. She took so much care to make it perfect and it shows.

If you are on a budget and can't afford to go to a fancy salon then this is the place. The cuts are cheap and they do a good job. I don't know if I would get something experimentive but they did a great job with a basic cut for me. The staff is nice (even if they aren't totally fluent in English) and they do really good work. Great place for a cheap cut.

I went for the first time yesterday and saw Jin, based on the reviews on this site. He listened to exactly what I wanted, and was able to do a fantastic chunky, messy rock-star bob on my hair which has a very odd wave in it and is very thick. He was meticulous and precise, cutting it first wet, then styling it and going through each curl and wave individually to cut it again. I was thoroughly impressed and I am going to return for highlights. Plus, you CANNOT beat the price in this city anymore.

While the English of the staff is not too great, the hair cutting is. The store is stuck between a pizza place and another restaurant and doesn't seem like anything special. But if you have fine hair, this is the place to go. With the average haircut only $40, it is a steal in the city. The service is prompt and the staff friendly.

This place is fantastic. Mostly Japanese, so they can do FRUITS style. Some of the haircutters don't have a perfect command of English, but they KNOW HAIR. My favorite cutter is Tomo, but many of them are good. Around $40 or so for a haircut! You can't get any cheaper than that here.

A friend of mine recommended Hair Mates as a good alternative to pricey salons. I brought pictures from magazines to show what kind of style I wanted, and Ryuko totally got it. He was professional and fast, and my hair looks great. Also, their salon school is great for people who are really strapped for cash--my friend got her hair cut by a student there yesterday and it came out great. They supervise their students very closely so nothing can go wrong. While I was waiting for my friend, they asked if they could wash and blow dry my hair for practice, and it came out great! Overall, this is the place to go.

I had my hair cut by Emiko the other day. The receptionists made sure that I am on my schedule. Emiko and I talked at length about how I want my hair, how I treat my hair (daily shampoo only ...), and she cut my hair perfectly! Then she took more time to fix my bangs. You cannot get this kind of quality and service for $40-45 in NY. Will definitely go back!

I have recommended about seven different people to Yun at HairMates over the last two years. Without exception, each of them emerges foxy, happy, & satisfied. Even I-- when I leave thinking maybe it wasn't Quite right-- realize upon getting home that my hairdresser knows what I want better than I do. And for $45, she's unbelievable.

And a sweetheart, to boot!

I have been going to Ryuko for the past 2 years and I have no complaints! He always takes the time to talk to me about what I would like and takes great care in cutting my hair.
I never have to wait more than 5 minutes and the staff is always very courteous.
I left my wallet there once and they called me after finding my business card inside. I was extremely shocked to find not a single penny missing. I think Hair Mates is great and would highly recommend it!

I have been going to Hair Mates for two years, and never once came out of the salon disappointed with my cut. Minako is the only stylist that I use, although I hear that the others are great, too. She's extremely pleasant, and will work with you on your hair until you are absolutely happy with it. I've recommended her to six other people -- and all of them were ecstatic about the job she did. I don't know who the previous post was unhappy with, because it certainly couldn't have been Mina ... unless she's been body snatched.

I read the review on Jin and my friends have recommended Hair Mates before. This is truly a great salon. Jin is an excellent stylist. He truly is meticulous about his styling. He personally did the highlights and because he wasn't satisified with the results, offered to bleach my hair to enhance the colour (he did not charge me for this extra service). He stayed another half hour after the store closed to make sure my hair was perfect. He was very attentive to what I was looking for. Overall, excellent service and great value.

I always get my hair cut with Jin. He is very nice and always spends a lot of time on my cut and style. I've gone to several pricey salons since moving here, but hair mates is my favorite.

I got my hair cut by Jin, and he knew exactly what he was doing. He knew what would go well with me. My boyfriend got his hair cut there too and he was very pleased, which is a big thing!
Their service was great and I didn't have to wait at all. The price is great too!

I showed up at Hair Mates for a walk-in (my second time going there) and they took me immediately. The stylist, Jin, had a consultation with me and understood exactly what I wanted. The hair wash was thorough and relaxing. Well Jin gave me one of the best haircuts I've ever had....and I've had a lot. He was extremely precise and definitely knew what he was doing.
