IT SMELLS FUNNY INSIDE - LIKE THE WALLS ARE WATER-LOGGED. THE LAST TIME I ATE THERE, I KEPT HEARING SOME SORT OF CHIRPING IN THE WALL - PROBABLY RATS.

THE FOOD USED TO BE BETTER...PRICES HAVE GONE UP.

SERVICE IS MEDIOCRE

We had a birthday party for my son and chose LaMela since it was a family affair. From the time we arrived until everyone left, the experience was the BEST. LaMela was energetic and the food was incredible. GREAT for party-type events. I opted for the full package which was way below in cost than one would expect given the full course of food and open bar.For certain - my next event will be held at this awesome place.Thank you LaMela for making our party a special one.mg

Go with a group, eat family style and be prepared for a loud night of fun with very good food at a very reasonable price. We ate here for the first time as a party of 8 on the Saturday evening after Christmas. For $34 pp we had a very good five course meal. Various musicians would wander in off the street to serenade the diners. Some were good, others were not. Some people enjoy this, others find it annoying. For example an asian guy with thick glasses who was obviously mentally challenged came in wearing a santa hat and holding a trumpet on which he could barely play a note. Nevertheless he was cheered and tipped by the patrons. As far as the meal goes, it was great to not have to fuss over a menu and decide what to order that would please 8 people. We just sat down and let them bring us food. The tomatoes and fresh mozzarella were excellent, served with a very good hot anitpasto of stuffed mushrooms, sauteed asparagus, roasted peppers and spedino alla romana. The pasta course was next, which consisted of a huge platter of fabulous gnocchi, tri-color tortellini and rigatoni. Next was the meat course, with roasted chicken, shrimp marinara and veal francaise. The veal was very tender but the shrimp were a bit over done. Finally came dessert, a big plate loaded with an assortment of delicious treats including tiramisu, italian cheesecake, tartufos, cannolis, bananas foster, etc. We had two magnums of wine, a red and a white, each very drinkable and at $28 each, very reasonable. We also ordered coffee, cappuccino and espresso which was extra. Unlike some others have reported, the tip was left up to us. With tax, tip & all it came to $57 per person, which I think is a great deal for all that good food in NYC.

Cons: Too many street musicians

My friends and I accidently stumbled upon Little Italy randomly on our last night in NYC. It was a friggin street party! We all fell in love.

So we decided to stop into La Mela and have some dinner. The experience was AWESOME! We all sat outside and two of us ordered a glass of wine. Instead of bringing two glasses our waiter brought the bottle and said to enjoy and if we didn't drink it all he wouldn't charge us for it all. Of course we drank it all!

The food was amazing and the wait staff were typical Italians...loud, slightly perverted and a hell of a lot of fun!

I highly recommend this place for a good time if nothing else.

La Mela is pretty typical of what I like to call a "red sauce joint". Is it romantic ? no. Is it the best food you ever had ? I hope not. Look, the thing about this place...Its not really trying to be any of those things. From the flourescent lighting to the vinyl tablecloths to the giant bottle of screw top house wine left on your table - "you pay for what you drink", you know what you are getting into here; go for a simple plate of spagetti and yummy garlicky vinegary salad, and a refreshing lack of pretension. The prices are totally reasonable, $12-$15 for an entree is virtually unheard of in downtown manhattan - generally that is the price of a drink anyplace nicer. They seated us promptly even though it was prime time on a saturday night, and brought us our food just as fast.
The reason why I like to go eat in little italy or chinatown is because the places are quirky, and thats what makes them fun. If you're looking for a gourmet experience, or a trendy decor, this place isn't for you. Which is fine - more for me !

ALL,
PLEASE BE NOTED THAT THIS PLACE HAS BEEN LATELY CAUGHT FOR CREDIT CARD FRAUD. A FEW OF US VISITED THIS PLACE DUE TO ITS GOOD ONLINE REVIEWS. THE FOOD WAS SUB-PAR. THE SERVICE WAS HORRIBLE AS WE WERE FORCED TO ORDER WHAT THE WAITER WANTED US TO ORDER. THE WAITER WAS VERY RUDE AND LOUD AND WAS SPITTING WHEN TALKING. HOWEVER THE WORST CAME WHEN WE HAD PAID AND LEFT. WE WERE 5 COUPLES SO WE SPLIT THE BILL 5 WAYS USING 5 CREDIT CARDS. A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER WE DISCOVERED THAT ALL 5 OF US WERE CHARGED THE SAME AMOUNT TWICE OR THRICE. WE HAVE CONTACTED OUR CREDIT CARD COMPANIES AND ALSO TRIED CONTACTING THE RESTAURANT BUT WITH NO RESPONSE.
VISIT THIS PLACE ONLY IF YOU LIKE OVERRATED, OVERPRICED FOOD WHICH YOU WANT TO PAY FOR THRICE.

This restaurant was the absolute WORST restaurant I have ever been to in my life. I was visiting NYC for the first time and decided to eat in a nice little restaurant in Little Italy. And boy, did I make the wrong choice. Right as we sat down, my friends and I noticed that the grated cheese in the shaker on our table had completely hardened and looked months old. Then the bread came and not only was it cold but hard as a rock. The waiter was also very inattentive the whole time.

The worst part was when the "food" came. I ordered a simple dish - spaghetti and marinara sauce, to which I added grilled chicken -- but the "marinara sauce" tasted and looked like oil mixed together with the sauce that comes with canned tomatoes and the chicken was cheap, dry, bland and looked like it came out of a Chinese fast food joint. My friends' dishes weren't any better - the Chicken Marsala was straight out of a Chinese restaurant and not a very good one at that and the Fettuccine Alfredo was overrun with oily sauce.

We all ended up paying $20+ for our meal and felt sick for the rest of the day. AVOID this horrible tourist trap!!

I never write reviews but I felt the need to let everyone in on one of the best kept secrets in NYC, and that's La Mela on Mulberry Street in Little Italy! It's not the fanciest place in the world but if you're looking for a traditional and festive atmosphere with spectacular food, La Mela is your place. Do yourself a favor and don't even look at the menu. Just let the wait staff do their thing and bring you out the family style prix-fix selections. Every course is just simply amazing, especially the pastas! I've lived in NYC my entire life and have never had better Italian food on a more consistent basis then at La Mela. It can get a bit pricey (about $30 a person without alchohol) but it's worth every penny!

One of Little Italy's finest restaurants. Unique setting serving family style, all you can eat. Best Gnocchi pasta in NYC. They will have to roll you out when done with dinner!

Im from Houston Texas and was visiting New York. We wanted to have lunch in Little Italy and found this place. The food was great, I really like it and have never had such good italian food. The wait staff have a little attitude but its expected, makes you think you are with the Sopranos haha, I liked it. I got to practice my italian and they were really nice. This is a great place and I will be coming back.

Don't listen to the uptight people that gave it one star. This place is loud an rowdy for a reason: it is FUN AND DELICIOUS! Of course don't bring kids on a weekend night on a place that stays open to 3 am, HELLO?!? But for the rest of us, it's a blast! You don't need a menu, they just bring it on! Sit back, get the red wine, and enjoy!

DO NOT BRING YOUR KIDS...
While having dinner at this restaurant with our two kids and our little cousin from Italy, we noticed a very loud croud at the bar and the bartender and some waiters yelling and laughing.
The entire room got very bright and our attention including our daughter 11, son 10 and cousin 13 went at the ceiling above the bar: A handmade male private part shaped light.
Every time someone would pull the string the light would light up, I don't have a problem with having fun but not in the presence of 3 teens that all they did all night was ask questions. Something like that in a restaurant?
In a public place?
It is gross and disgusting, my family did not have to witness that, I hope they get fined and I hope any normal human being will not dine in this place.

Lousy service, medicore food, scam artist that would add on the tips and service charge no matter how big your party is. I went with my roomate, 2 of us, we were tagged on a 18% service charge. No wonder they tolerate such lousy service there because you are forced to pay them the underseved service charge...

I unfortunately had the experience of eating here last Sat night, some out of town friends chose this place and since I never heard anything about it I gave it a try. After eating there I now know why I never heard of this place. Out of the 30 or so other restaurants lining Mulberry St, anyone would be far superior to this dingy overpriced venue. A sabarett on the street is recommended over this place any day. We opted for the all you can eat food and drink special $32 for just food and $52 for food and alcohol, yes they charge $20 per person for the cheapest wine known to man. Thank God for the wine though b/c without it masking the taste of the cardboard food I wouldn't have eaten a thing. The food is just plain awful, they start you off with some fresh moz then some antipasto which was the best part actually. Then they bring an oversized tray of pasta leave it on your table for about 40 min completly ignoring you and forcing you to fill up on the pasta so you can't over-eat the meat. Not that the meat is anything worth saving for, the blandest driest chicken known to man paired with the worst tasting veal I've ever encountered. If you're up for wasting your money knock yourself out here, otherwise feel free to explore the countless other restaurants lining the street, anything is better than this awful establishment.

Went there on January 15th with seven friends. What?s up with the phallic light fixture? And what about the obscene banana dessert with the cream on its tip (a girl in the party next to us was ?encouraged? to put it in her mouth in a sexual manner). Not to mention the sexual innuendos coming from the wait staff. Sure, I guess its only ?cute? because they are Italian, you know, like in the old country. Interesting choice of entertainment. Food was bad, and I know good Italian food. Not one of us put a dent in our plates, and we were all hungry and pretty drunk. Unlike some other reviewers here, I seriously doubt this is the type of place mobsters used to eat at, reminiscing on Grandma?s cooking. No way. Tourist trap. It?ll take some time before I return to Little Italy.

This is my first review but dinner was so bad I felt it my duty to say something. I went to La Mela on the recommendation of 2 different people. I should have know better as neither of them actually live in NY like I do. There were a couple of good points. The bread was tasty and so was the mozzarella and the ice cream. The bathroom was clean and the attendant was very friendly. The waiters were nice and also attentive. That's about it. The hot antipasto was so not hot that the cheese on the asparagus didn't even melt. One of the items was not even identifiable after I tasted it. The chicken was drier than the worst thanksgiving turkey you have ever had. The veal was so thin I could almost see through it. There was more flour than veal and there was no seasoning whatsoever. Totally bland. The shrimp was over cooked and very "fishy." Dessert was pretty gross too. The ice cream was the only thing we liked. We thought we could at least have a decent cup of coffee but our $5.50 cappuccinos (EACH!) were lukewarm. It was so bad I wanted to go by Puglia's after and apologize for not going there!!! This dinner cost us $98! For TWO! Do yourself a favor and stay far away.

THE WORST THE WORST THE WORST
a total tourist trap, I don't understand how this scam of a place stays in business, they must rely on tourists, who don't know any better and just listen to the advertising. This place advertises all over the radio, but its a TOTAL FRAUD. The food is mediocre, I lived in NY my entire life, and wanted to check it out. The service is ATROCIOUS, THE PLACE IS FILTHY!!!!
THE STAFF are not discourteous, BUT don't deserve to work in any restaurant.
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR STAY AWAY,
I have lived in NY my whole life and have been to little Italy a million times, JUST WALK INTO ANY RESTAURANT on the block BUT STAY AWAY!!!! GROSSSSSSSSS!!!!!

This place is the worst, we made a reservation a month in advance for a large party and everyone was looking forward to this meal. Well once we got to the place we found that they have not even seated a party from 2 hours earlier. They told us that we could wait but it was between 15 min and 2 hours. Everyone who worked there was very rude and did not care that we were a party of 25 or that they called us twice that morning to confirm the reservation.

I WOULD NEVER GO TO THIS PLACE, THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU.

This is the worst restaurant in all of Little Italy. They are the rudest people in the world. I was one of THREE 24 people partiesto have a reservation at 7pm on Saturday. Not only could they not accommodate ANY of the parties, but they were seating a party for 25 that was scheduled at 5pm. I made my reservation over a month ago and it ruined a birthday party. We were lucky to know a great pizza place in the area (THANK YOU LOMBARDIS!) that accommodated us!

The food isn't worth it for the rudeness that I experience. In addition, the staff will PRETEND to not speak english so they won't help you.

Little Italy wonders why the business down there has dwindled. This is a prime example.

This is a prime example.

.

Waiter was extremely rude. Said he "would not serve us" because we wanted glasses of wine and some appetizers. "I am not serving you unless you each order an entree." I think that was really inappropriate and extremely rude. As a paying customer, you should serve whomever is there whatever they want. Never going back.

I am retired now,but I have traveled all over the world for business.I went to La Mela on July 15,2006. It was a crowded Sat night, yet it seems that the waitstaff were expecting me. While
waiting for 3 more diners of my party to arrive, the waitstaff brought a chair for me to sit on.
(the street was closed) in the street. I just can't say enough about the service and the food. Starting with Chris who took my reservation and Ben who was my waiter,I and my party were made to feel very much as members of a large family. The food was GREAT and the prices were very reasonable. This was my first time to visit this restaurant, even though I lived in NYC for a long period of time. There is no doubt that I will be going back many more times in the future.

Pros: Aside from the waitstaff and food, it was a fun place with everyone laughing&singing

Cons: no cons

I really don't understand why this place gets any bad reviews!

I went with a large group (there was 15 of us) and we were seated promptly, served quickly and the waiter was ontop of everything.

We ordered the family style dishes and everything was incredible (except for the roasted peppers but I am not a red pepper fan).

This place has the best tortillini by far of any I have tried. It's not a fancy restaurant and they don't have a selection of wine but the food makes up for any bad points.

Cons: Average wine, ambience is "rustic"

Went for dinner on saturday for my boyfriend bithday and had a horrible time. The place was the size of my bathroom. people packed like sardines. The food was drenched in oil and cream, accompanied by an imitation wine i never heard of. The waitstaff was unfriendly and rude. The only time our waiter assisted us was when i recieved a dirty plate. After a wonderful dinner follwed with a no tip for the tab, the waiter chases up for one. For what reason they got $90 for slops, is he kidding. Well i guess this was th first and last time for us.

Someone had recommended La Mela to us, so we went there for lunch while vacationing in NY. The waiters were nice enough and just started bringing food family style, no need for menus here. We had a plate of caprese and another plate of various appetizers, followed by a plate of mixed pasta. We were full from the pasta, so we skipped the meat course and had desert, which was underwhelming. So we finally get the bill, and it came to $130 for the 4 of us! I couldn't believe how much they had charged us, esp with every other restaurant in Little Italy charging $15-$20 a person for a 3 course lunch. And you know what--the food wasn't even that good! Do yourself a favor and skip La Mela when you visit Little Italy, there are much better restaurants that don't try to rip off the tourists!

I hosted a dinner party for a good friend last night at La Mela. Apparently, this is the place for fun, laid-back group dining as there were innumerable large parties already sat in the massive restaurant. Our party of 14 was sat immediately and the waiter brought over bottles of wine and bread. Service was relatively quick; portions were monstrously huge. We started off with an appetizer of fresh mozz, tomatoes, and basil. Our antipasti consisted of stuffed mushrooms, fried cheese, roasted red peppers, and asparagus. Finally, our pasta meal had three varieties. Our table received two platters of each course and had multiple doggy bags to bring home. The wine never stopped flowing and the food was satisfactory. If you're looking for fabulous dining, skip La Mela. However, if you want simple Italian food in large quantities in a fun environment, this place is ideal!

The food was terrible, I had the chicken Scarp and all I got was a plate full of chicken that looked like I was eating in Chinatown. The garlic in the chicken was mushy and the taste was hardly identifiable. It came with no pasta. Who goes out for Italian food and doesn't eat pasta? The waiter was rude and it took several attempts to get his attention. I noticed that he treated his other customers the same way. We were repulsed by this meal and will go back to our favorite restaurant in Little Italy.for its excellent food and service. Also, there was an annoying performer with a guitar that we wished would shut up so we could enjoy our meal and have a conversation.

First the restaurant is a loud, extremly crowded, bright, food sucks and the service was the worst I have ever experienced in my 15 years of living in NY. The owner came out and started going into a psycho rage cause one person out of 3 didnt want to order food even though we bought wine already. It was quite scary and completely uncalled for and ruined our dinner. I have been to many restaurants in little italy and all had nice professional friendly staff. Stay away from this one anywhere is better than here.

Pros: absolutly nothing

Cons: owner=huge jerk, super crowded, food below average

This place was so much fun to go to- no matter if you are with your husband, your kids, your friends or your significant other. The staff was polite (and cute nonetheless) - never rushed us through our dinner and the food was soooo delicious! Even though it was very busy last Sat night, the employees were friendly and you could tell that it was busy because it was so popular and not due to poor managment. The man working the door (red hair)-very funny and warming. The prices were great and my boyfriend wasn't hungry at the end of the meal- which was a big, no a HUGE surprise!

This is absolutely one restaurant we highly reccommend. Tommy "Red" made our visit to La Mela an expeirience we will never forget. The food was delicious and the service made us feel as if we were in our Nanna's kitchen. We will definitely vist La Mela again!

nice people who run this place but the food is average at best and very noisy which was not a surprise and is part of the atmosphere. For the price, it was not worth it at all.

This is my all time favorite restaurant in the world!!! The food is phenomenal!! I don't know about you but food is why I go out to eat. Not for the wine, not for the decor, and not for any other reson but to eat a great meal. While some people may be put off by the ambience for me it feels like home!! If you want a quiet place with a long wine list, don't go. But if you want great food and plenty of it, run don't walk to La Mela!!

I used to go to La Mela all the time when I lived in Jersey. The food is great, and for NYC, an excellent price. It's a loud, crowded, fun place, not the place to go for high-brow ambience. But the gnocchi is awesome, the stuffed mushrooms amazing. It's like you're at your Italian grandmother's for a family party. Afterward, stroll Little Italy for a pastry, or head down a few blocks into Chinatown to the Chinese Ice Cream Factory for red bean or ginger ice cream.

This is real italian...not Olive Garden. The vegetables are wonderful, the wine is fantastic, and the atmosphere is relaxed and casual. No need for a menu...they know what to do. Go to have fun and sample some family style Italian.

I was kind of turned off by the greeter's used-car-salesman pitch, but we decided to give La Mela a try anyway. Maybe I just don't know Italian food, but all in all I wasn't too impressed by the food. They sold us the "package" which they offer to everyone for about $17. I can't imagine the profit they must make off of this since all the dishes probably just come out of a huge vat in the backroom. At any rate, my girlfriend loved the pasta though I thought it was just okay(I wish I had gotten the meat option... there was a meat option, right??). There were some savory dishes among the appetizers though. I love cheese, but is mozzarela supposed to be so tasteless (on the tomato/mozz/basil)? All in all, I'd wish we had sampled Little Italy elsewhere.

La Mela is perfect for a Summer night. Sit outside in the front or in the backyard and enjoy the waiters who flirt with all the women. La Mela is great for people watching and it's a great place to have fun with friends, family, or a significant other. The pasta is delicious. Extremely fresh...the gnocchi is a knock-out. Plus the bill was much lower than I expected. The cappuccino put me off at first because it's topped w/ whipped cream, but it's a fun indulgent treat reminiscent of hot chocolate. Mangia, Mangia!

Dined here for a birthday party and had lots of fun! The food courses just keep coming out just like at my Italian bf's house. All family style with large platters for everyone to help themselves. The desserts were heavenly! Love the gelati and cheesecake! The video monitors on the wall give you a glimpse of the other diners in the 3 rooms. Funny waitstaff. They charge you for how much wine you drink from the large bottles they set out infront of you. Expect to pay about $50 per person.

Especially if not italian. This is not a top notch restaurant with out of work models and actresses. It's a place where a person goes to eat and talk to your close friends and family. It's fun..like a theme bar..but the food is great and you get plenty of it. Remember all the brooklyn mafia movies you watch , this is the type of cooking there grandmother did on Sunday's. Do you think they chose what was put on the table..... neither do you :)
Trust me ..this is the real Brooklyn italian family expirience

P.S. They do have a menu. You just have to ask for it!!!!

La Mela has amazing Italian food, as expected from its Mulberry Street location. I went here during the San Gennero festival and was, to my surprise, seated right away. All of the food was great, starting from the tomato and mozzarella appetizer, to the pasta with seafood entree. I even saw Steve Schirippa from the Sopranos eating there. I would definitely go back.

The food was good, the service uneasily fast, but myself and part of my group felt like cattle, hearded in and set down infront of our grain and then rushed out... First of all our reservations were lost, but they did our best to accomidate us when we all arrived, so that was great but the space we were put in was well.. lets just say 22 people don't fit at a long table made for about 15 at the most... Like I said great food but I particularly don't like being rushed.

I was in Italy this past summer and there is no other place in New York to feel the Italian experience other than La Mela. The waiters are outstanding and the food is excellent. I love the idea of having a bottle of wine at the table for you to pour whenever you want! And it is totally worth the money...inexpensive according to NY standards. Definitely recommend it!

Pepino and the boys are cooking up something good! La Mela is the best kept secret in Little Italy. The secrecy lies in the fact that the place has grimy floors, flourecent lighting, a thousand pictures of Vinny and Paulie livin it up on the walls, and a catchy pull toy in the main room. But settle into one of the plastic chairs and buckle your eating belt. There's no menu here, so let the waiter wow you with hot anipasti, pasta and veal! I have been going here since it opened in 1985 and family style Southern Italian food cannot be done better.
