I've had my child there for 3 years now (toddler 2 thru UPK) Everyone in that school has been wonderful. I have been faced with many challenges with my child the past few years and everyone has helped, been flexible with needs, and made accomodations/modifications. The teachers I have dealt with have been excellent. My child has learned so much. Summer camp I think could incorporate more crafts, projects and some learning especially for a full day child, but during the school year I am very pleased with the teachers my child has had and my child loves being there. The office is always most helpful and they do work with you and have a heart. Miss Daniel, Miss Jessica, Miss Victoria, Miss Julia, Miss Maria are all great teaching staff. I think a parent who has a child actually enrolled here the past few years saying its a bad place is just suspect and making false claims. That has not been my experience at all. I highly recommend especially the teachers I mentioned. I am a parent who came from another daycare infancy thru 2 and THAT place was a horrible nightmare, dirty, delayed my child over a year, hid things from me, kept kids strapped in chairs all day, my child was beyond aggressive surrounded by caregivers who were not nice yelled all day and made the kids aggressive. I had enough and enrolled in Childrens Playhouse and have loved it from day 1, Very thankful I switched. Its not the most modern but it is very clean, never smells, is bright cheerful and a great learning and developmental environment. My child thrived there. Its been the same faces for 3 years now. No constant rotation of young girls like other places. experienced staff and the caregivers for the infants you can see absolutely adore babies. Great School.

Very unprofessional made appointment to go look at school was originally going to do two full days. But when I went and teachers told me most of the class was part time and my son would be there with basically no kids I figured he would be bored. So decided 2 half days would be better. Filled out all papers they gave me the list to go get all the stuff they require to start was suppose to start that week upon leaving they said they would call me with price n I would be starting that Thursday. I went and bought all the stuff they asked never heard back from them so I started calling Wednesday all day they keep telling me they had to figure out the price I told them I need to know what's going on I have work the next day and my son is suppose to start tomorrow. They waited till 430pm to call me and tell me it isn't going to work for them unless I do the 2 full days and there is no part time kids meanwhile they already told me the whole class is part time basically when I went there when I told them I got all the stuff and why would they call me so late when they could of told me Monday they said it's not there problem and they can't accommodate me that it will not work for them anymore. Very disgusted with this school and how they treat working parents. I will never recommend and will let everyone know how this school treats people. Very bad if this is how they operate to be taking care of such young kids all they care about is how much money they can get. I guess cause I wanted to change to part time they punished me by waiting to the last minute to tell me so I couldn't make any other arrangements and waste money on buying the stuff they require And now I have to explain to my child that is so excited to start school he isn't going to and take off from work

My child has been enrolled in the UPK class since September. The full-day and 2 half-day UPK teachers are dedicated to their students and create wonderful curriculum. Everything follows Board of Ed guidelines & Common Core Standards. My child's half-day upk teacher has taught wonderful lessons and my child loves going to school. My child is also enrolled in the enrichment program which teaches the student's even more about letters, letter recognition, sounds and even sight words. The reviews from years ago are definitely not true anymore. The "bad" teachers no longer are employed at the Children's Playhouse. The new teachers however are very much experienced. The school has been running since 1976, that says it all. School is clean, teachers are professional.

these reviews are way off base. my daughter has been in this school for almost two years and we both love this school. we love the teachers, the aids, ms fox, everyone. they all know my daughter on a first name basis - even teachers she hasn't been in class with yet. she has a great time everytime shes there (3 days a week) and she's never said anything thats made me think twice about this school. its sad that people only write reviews when they're upset, but thats reality. im sure if you visited for yourself, you would see that this is a great closenit place for children.

My daughter attends this school. I searched all over the island and found this school to be one of the best on the island. I did my research and was wary with reading some negative reviews but it is a beautiful school with loving, knowledgeable, and dedicated teachers. If some of you only knew the disgusting horrible schools that are out there you would think twice about what you say about this one. I had to remove my daughter from a school because it was horrendous. I am very pleased with my experience here. The teachers are amazing. I hope parents don't allow a few disgruntled employees to sway them in any way. It's always best to see for yourself and be your own judge. Hope everyone has a Happy Holiday.

dear jc - you are obviously a member of the family of close friend. NO vacation you say ! Thats funny, Ms Fox closes the school EVERY summer at the end of the summer for 3 weeks. If thats not a vacation, i dont know what is. Does she care that the parents have to find childcare elsewhere ? No! But then command her employees that they are not allowed to care for any of the parents children when she closes !...does she care that the people in her employ have to find some other way to make money during that time ? NO ...she barely pays min wage, and short pay on every occasion she can, so its not like the money can be saved during the school year. She doesnt pay for time off, sick time or vacation days. SO instead the employees have no other way but to work 10-12 hours with barely a lunch break. The place is filthy and she does not know ANY child by name - PLEASE

When I first came upon this establishment I thought everything about it was great.. the people the atmosphere the children the owner and the " educational director ".. Little did I know It was the start to a miserable time. The women in the baby room were treating the children unfairly I would get the wrong clothes the wrong bibs dirty spoons that did not belong to me. There is ants and many child ratio violations. As I moved up with the school I thought things would change .. Low and behold my nephew learned nothing he doesnt know blue from green or his ABCs .. The staff was kind in the UPK but they went through so many teachers in the last year it was a disgrace !!!! Mrs. Fox short pays and pays next to nothing for the things the girls do she is UNAPPRECIATIVE to the parents as well as the employees .. It was my greatest DISHONOR to have ever come across her and ms. Phyllis ! They are both about the money and not the children. The Summer camp was also terrible .. the activites werent planned by the so called "educational director" but by the girls who already had to much on their hands. Wonderful so much money for my nephew to run thru a sprinkler onto rocks oh joy.. If you ask me she should retire and hand down the business to someone who actually knows the kids names and know each kid INDIVIDUALLY .. she however asks the employees the childrens names ! PATHETIC ! They tell personal information and personal problems to each parent. There is no work ethic what so ever. absolutely saddens me to know these people are around children

After reading all these negative things about the school makes me wonder how evil people can be. My child currently attends the school and tells me how much he loves his teacher. .Since being in the school, he has learned tremendously with the help of his teachers. Mrs. Fox is a loving and respectable woman who shows so much love to every single child who walks through those doors. Coming to Childrens playhouse was the best decision I could of ever made.

i worked there for 2 summers, i was late searching for a job the 2nd summer and had no where else to work and when i called the day before camp started of course Mrs Fox told me there was an opening. i got told by the full time staff i should have my head examined for coming back! we made BELOW minimum wage, and didnt receive a break. we had to eat with the children. the only good person that worked there was Bonnie, and she was only there because her 2 sons got to go there for free! if you worked for 6 and a 1/2 hours you were lucky if you got paid for like 5 but they wouldnt allow us to make photocopies of our time cards. if there was more to do and they didnt try to cheat everyone out of money it would have been an amazing place to work. the canteen was a ripoff to the children. mr and mrs fox would buy in bulk from costco and then charge the kids like $2 for a candy bar, and mr fox tried to cheat one of my 5 year olds out of her $6 change, luckily i was there and said where is her change! the employees in the infant room were amazing, and i think its ridiculous that when children would stay for pm room they would end up in the infant room, it wasnt fair to the children, their parents were paying good money and all they could do was sit on the floor. not fair to the children at all!!

My son has been going to Children's PlayHouse since he was 2 years old. He really enjoyed it up until this past summer camp. I noticed myself the change in the school and it's a shame. My son would tell me he didn't want to go to camp anymore, when I asked why he said we can't do nothing, hardly went outside, very little crafts and he said the teacher was always yelling. Not to mention that he had to start his mornings in the babies room, because they were so short staffed. There is one summer teacher that I noticed was not nice at all to the children, I felt bad and if I heard her talking to my child that way, I would have definately complained to Miss. Linda or Mrs. Fox.

The school teachers were great with the kids, but camp is just not the same since they stopped the swim club next door.
Its sad, for once it was a great school and camp, now I am actually glad that my son is out.

Mrs. Fox is an honest, hardworking director. The money made out to herself was only done AFTER she paid her employees out of her own pocket. I've attended the school, summer camp, and have grown up to work at the camp itself after the news report. I have to say that I did very well in school and was accepted to top universities. I believe my foundation in The Childrens' Playhouse helped me learn quickly and easily as I entered elementary school. I highly recommend The Childrens' Playhouse and hope to enroll my own children there someday.

Both of my children attended this school and camp...they are now 12 and 8...they are very bright in school and were from kindergarten. They both attended the UPK and camp and loved it. They were very prepared for kindergarten and learned so much from their teacher Ms. Phyllis and Ms. Lisa. Mr. & Mrs. Fox are very nice and very organized. Linda is great. She is both caring and nurturing to the children and always kept me informed. Yes it was a little more money but you get what you pay for. It was worth every penny knowing that my children were in good hands and peace of mind is priceless. They used to go swimming in the pool twice a day during the camp session and there was always a life guard present. You only had to pay more if you wanted private awimming lessons from the lifeguard at 15.00/hour which I think is reasonable. The camp had a daily calender with a schedule of daily activities and theme days. My kids favorite days were crazy hat day, carnival day, and the live animal show days. I could go on and on but it would take too long. Let me conclude that my son, who is now 8 and has since attended other camps due to the closure of the Children's playhouse camp, just requested yesterday if he could go back to this camp...he has yet to like any other camp since...so all you bitter angry people with your own agenda...you stand to be corrected from a family who loved this school and camp and still does....I came across this review in attempts to see if they re-opened the camp..I really wish Mrs. Fox would re-open the camp...it was the greatest and we miss Linda...

I have read the reviews about the pre-school posted by other people on here. I have to say that I really don't care about the money that the owner is paying herself or the aide that she has gotten from the state that she used. Anyone that is lucky enough to get aid from the state is going to accept it and use it for what they think that the need at the time. No one is going to give money back to the state. As for her using the money for herself well for how many years did she not get enough aid the money had to come from somewhere. The teachers are great. They are teaching my son and he is retaining a lot. They have a lot of fun and most of the time he doesn't even realize that he is learning. Of course I try and re-enforce everything that is done in school with him which is what children need, the more repetitive you are the more they retain. The office is friendly. The school is well keep. The teachers make time for you and are ready to talk whenever you ask them. We came to this pre-k program after the school year had already started, and we have been impressed from the beginning. With the 2 hours and 30 minutes they have they make a big difference. The pre-k class that my son is in has a sign up sheet so you can come any day that you want to see through the whole day with your child and see the whole experience. I loved it, and he did too. It was great to see what he does every day and it is easier for me to ask about his day now that I know there routine. Having the option to come and stay for the day is great. I didn't actually sign up for the day that I stayed so it was a surprise visit because that's just the way it worked out and the teacher was more than accommodating to have me there. I like to know that whenever I want to be there I have the option. It's a great policy and helps to have the parents more involved.

My 2 children were both there for 10 years combined. My daughter is now 10 and my son is 5. They both did extremely well at Children's Playhouse from infants to UPK. It does seem that the most complaints are from the strictly UPK parents who expect the world for 2 1/2 hours a day and do nothing at home with their kids. These are the same parents who complain all the up the education ladder. It is always the school fault.Kudos to this place. My children are both excellent students and we have made lasting friendships over the years.

In your review you posted the following information:

"An education official countered that Ms. Fox's bank transactions were deemed aboveboard,

and a legal representative for Ms. Fox, Mathew Hoffman, of Todtman, Nachamie, Spizz & Johns, P.C, in Manhattan, said that several of the audit's findings were never brought to her attention.

"What concerns us is the school had an understanding that it had satisfied the auditor," said Hoffman. "It's very troubling that we're seeing in this audit for the first time allegations that the school never had an opportunity to respond to."

Does this sound BAD to you? It doesn't to me!!

Isn't it amazing how people only see what they want to see? Karate uniforms and rubber ground tiles purchased by the YMCA NOT the Children's Playhouse. Gee, I guess you feel that the owner of a business shouldn't take a salary??? They should work hard every day for 30 years - 4 seasons without a vacation and do it for free????

Come on people - "Anonymous" has a personal agenda it seems - Children who attend run in the door everyday eager to learn and have fun. Ask Kindergarten teachers in the neighborhood schools if they think children who attended the Children's Playhouse are prepared for kindergarten (You will get an overwhelming yes but don't take my word for it - do the research yourself) The UPK program is close to perfect and if you call the Department of Education - Early Childhood Division, they will be able to tell you how well they rated in their yearly review - don't just believe me.... Also, you should know that the retention of teaching staff is excellent - ask them. All head teachers and caregivers have been with the school for over 6 years and longer.

The biggest problem that I see with these review boards is that people read and people believe..... Parents who send their children to UPK for 2 1/2 hours a day and think that they don't need to reinforce learning at home and then complain that their child "did not learn a thing" are just fooling themselves. Early learning is a partnership between the school and the home -

One last comment: Don't let anyone dictate to you - go to your chosen school (be it Children's Playhouse or another ) and insist on a tour of the center and see the classrooms in action. You can do this at The Children's Playhouse at anytime - for children who attend there is an open door policy for parents - Make sure the school your child attends also allows you to drop in at anytime! That is the true test of a well run preschool.

Sincerely,
jc

Sincerely,
jc

Funding goofs cited in city's management of private pre-Ks
Comptroller audit blames the Island's regional office for overpayments, misuse
Thursday, March 22, 2007
By YOAV GONEN
STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE
Lax oversight by Staten Island's regional education office resulted in an unjustified windfall for at least four non-public universal pre-kindergarten programs on Staten Island, two of which are being eyed by auditors for possible misappropriation of funds, City Comptroller William Thompson said yesterday.

In one instance, $3,500 was spent on karate uniforms -- despite the fact that the tykes don't chop and kick.

The other two Island programs were overpaid by the city and state in fiscal years 2004 and 2005 but face no allegations of impropriety.

According to the audit that Thompson released, the director of one of the programs -- JoAnn Fox of Children's Playhouse Nursery School in New Springville -- made $65,000 in questionable bank transactions.

The other programs that were overpaid, the audit revealed, are the Staten Island Jewish Community Center, the Staten Island YMCA Nursery School and Building Blocks Montessori School in Silver Lake, along with six Brooklyn programs in regions 6 and 7.

Since the audit was conducted, the JCC has reimbursed the Department of Education for about $18,000 in overpayment, leaving $1,840 in undocumented expenses. Similarly, Building Blocks Montessori was cited only once in the report, for $1,588 in undocumented expenses that its director said had never been identified as being in question.

Thompson blamed the $378,00 in overpayments and undocumented or non-related expenses, and $407,000 in questionable bank transactions, on the office that oversees the three-year contracts with service providers here and in portions of Brooklyn.

"The largest issue here is that the [Department of Education] does not have procedures in place to monitor the spending of universal pre-K," said John Graham, deputy comptroller for audits, contracts and accountancy.

Graham emphasized that the quality of child care at the 10 programs reviewed was not an issue.

In fiscal year 2004, Regions 6 and 7 had 183 non-public schools serving just over 9,000 students in pre-kindergarten, at a cost of about $28 million.

Last year, 29 non-public schools on Staten Island served nearly 2,000 students in universal pre-kindergarten programs, at no cost to parents.

Education officials disputed much of the audit's findings but said that the department had recouped $71,000 of the $88,000 it had agreed was outstanding.

"The Comptroller's audit greatly exaggerates the amount of money that may have been improperly spent and ignores our existing oversight systems," said education spokeswoman Lindsey Harr.

"We will take the necessary steps to ensure that any funds due to the City are returned, but the report incorrectly implies a high level of mismanagement by our community-based organization partners."

Of the Island programs, Children's Playhouse Nursery School was singled out for various factors that the auditors saw as increasing the "potential for fraud."

They were notably concerned that Ms. Fox performed much of the financial duties single-handedly, and that she had endorsed 19 checks that had been payable to cash and two checks payable to herself for a total of $65,000 between October 2004 and July 2005.

An education official countered that Ms. Fox's bank transactions were deemed aboveboard, and a legal representative for Ms.

The Staten Island YMCA Nursery School had more than $75,000 in funds questioned -- including about $20,000 in undocumented expenses, nearly $35,000 it spent on playground tiles for a facility shared with other programs, and more than $3,500 it spent on karate uniforms.

An education official said the dpartment had sought to recoup one-third of the playground expenses, and that it's investigating whether the uniforms were bought with the knowledge that karate is not part of the pre-kindergarten program.

My daughter attended this school for 3 years and it was very disappointing experience. She learned nothing! she was there from the time she was 2yrs old until UPK. My son attended a different school and I could see the difference in care and education. This place is all about money, overtime, and violating city rules.

To top the whole thing, I heard in the news (yes! it was on TV!!!) how the owner/director, Mrs. Fox, is such a thief that she wrote to herself checks that were supposed to be spent in the UPK program. How can she do that? money for kids, she takes to herself... shame!!!!! shame!!!!! shame!!!!!! Now that she got caught, I hope they close this place.

Summer camp... ??? terrible. Kids spent most of the day inside a classroom. Swimming is advertised, but they only let the kids play with the sprinklers. If you want swimming, you have to pay extra. what a joke! I understand how people can still take kids there, they are naive and don't do enough research. Open your eyes and see that this place is GARBAGE!!!!

all the things being said are true plus MORE! i worked there one summer and it was the worst experience of my life! i've worked at other summer camps before but this one was so poorly run! the kids were bored all the time due to lack of variety within the camp (surely they could do more with the amount of money they charge!!), they were ill prepared for weather, there were certain health risks that weren't taken care of, poor treatment of staff as well as being under-staffed which threatened child endangerment laws, and just general unrest among staff and the kids!! i had thought of writing a letter to the advance myself, though apparently something to that extent has already be done, could someone please post the link to the article? i'm very interested to see it

This school is great on the surface, but after having my infant son enrolled here, I found out that it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Basically, the money is all this school is concerned with. My son's health became second priority with the owner when I had to pull him out sooner than I had expected.

My girlfriend worked at this school few years ago and I heard a lot of stories about it. I was not surprised to see the Advance' article and read the reviews at this site. I am looking for a UPK for my daughter and I would NEVER consider this place.
Employees were not treated fairly. Kids were shortchanged. The director is a dictator... writing checks to herself? how honest is that? I would not leave my child in the hands of a person without morals. What kind of values would they be explosed to?

The people working at the school do the best they can with the children, however, the administration is the problem. Phony records, overcharges, overtime that shows up without back up, don't be late 5 min or you get charged the hour.
And now... the news don't lie: channel 2, channel 4 and The Staten Island Advance - March 22nd "They were notably concerned that Ms. Fox performed much of the financial duties single-handedly, and that she had endorsed 19 checks that had been payable to cash and two checks payable to herself for a total of $65,000 between October 2004 and July 2005."
Lile the review in this site says "Be Aware...not true" ??? Excuse me L.R..... the news are out there. People be aware of this place!!!
