420 Bar and Lounge is in the heart of Manhattan's Upper West Side. Praised by Zagat's as well as thousands of patrons and numerous celebrities, this 2-floor hip spot boasts a "loungey" upstairs and a "steamy" downstairs. In addition, 420 has a tremendous television projector screen and a 50" plasma for superior viewing of all your favorite sporting events, award shows, New Year's Eve countdown, and more!

Editorial by

The Scene
Boasting three bars (one upstairs, two downstairs) and an interior so cramped that spilling a drink on yourself is more often an inevitability than a possibility, 420 is an amiable, unintrusive place to hang out with your friends. It's a rather dim locale though, so make extra sure you're leaving with the same person you came in with.

The Draw
Young urban professionals knock back reasonably priced drinks (between $5 and $7) while DJs spin and a handful of couples get close on the tiny downstairs dance floor. Though a severe seating shortage pretty much ensures you'll be standing most of the time, don't fret--420 is more like a single stop on the bar-hopping express than your final destination.

Key Points

  • 2 Floors, 3 Bars
  • 2 Private Party Rooms
  • DJ Fri & Sat; Karaoke Wed.

Ratings_icons Felt as if I was in college....

It's like a college bar---It's super crowded and hot in the basement. I had a great time and would go back again. The upstairs is nice and "loungey" with a bar, the basement is where all the action occurs. Once again, it's a tight environment so get ready to sweat!!

I have been to this bar several times and each time, besides my date, I was the only person in the bar. It was quite strange. There never seemed to be a pattern to the emptiness. I still enjoyed myself. The bartender was friendly. On our request, she changed the satellite radio station to music we enjoyed. The drinks were good. No real complaints other then the bar being empty.

420 Bar And Lounge is definitely a cool, hip hang-out for thirty something crowd. The lounge is eclectically decorated in crush, comfy velvet benches. All of the patrons are laid back, savvy dresser who all seem like regulars making you feel really comfortable clean lounge.

Ratings_icons Best spot on UWS

jenna84

This spot is definately hot. I have been here many times and i love it. The prices of drinks are reasonable and the DJ is the best. He plays a lot of hip hop, pop.. stuff like that. Anything that's hot... he plays. :)

Ratings_icons Relaxed and Cozy

mslovely99

Great if you go early and just wanna catch up with old friends. Reasonably priced drinks. Pretty empty until late night when they play current hip hop and things get crowded. Very low lighting unless you are right by the bar. Few tables and barstools, so be ready to stand.

Ratings_icons Awesome atmosphere

selica1

Very cozy but not crammed. Upstairs is the bar/lounge and downstairs is a small "club" but not tacky at all. Awesome place to hang out with friends and chat and have a drink.

Cons: Slightly pricey

Ratings_icons Huge place

Ratings_icons Ruined My "Private" Party

teresad

My private party was supposed to be from 9pm-12am. All of my guests paid$40 for an open bar for these 3 hours. Upon arrival at 9pm, the room was "not ready". they finally let us in at 9:15 with NO MUSIC. It took another 15 minutes to get the music on. The bartender in our room was so rude. She kept pointing to her tip bucket, pushing it in the guests faces, as well as laughed and made sarcastic comments at the tips that were given. then, to top it off, eventhough our "private party" didnt start until 9:30, the bouncer started opening our party to the public at 11pm. 1HOUR EARLY!!! the room got so crowded that for the last hour of our open bar, we could not get to the bar to actually get a drink. Overall....HUGEdisappointment. They did not follow through with what was promised.

Cons: rude bartenders, too crowded
