DeWitt Animal Hospital, in my experience, is a business-like but competent facility. The receptionist is helpful but not friendly. Dr. Wilcox seems knowledgeable, professional and a little distant; he surely doesn't hate dogs. The vet tech is kind and friendly. The boarding facility is small but clean. I have no trouble with them acting as a holding facility for strays; if the strays are not claimed, then it is better that they be humanely euthanized than suffer on the streets. Only in a perfect world would all dogs have loving homes. If you find a stray, take it to a no-kill shelter.

I have read these reviews and cannot understand the negative ones...Years ago my family brought our dog and cats to Dr. Quinn...he was excellent. When he partly retired and Dr. Wilcox became the main vet it didn't change much...our animals were still taken care of humanely and properly. I did have to put my dog, Benji, asleep (she was 20 years old, blind, mostly deaf, incontinent, constantly falling down the stairs). Dr. Wilcox was very professional and very understanding. He allowed for me to stay in the room with my dog and grieve until I was ready to give her up. I appreciated their sympathy at that time. True the receptionist isn't the warmest woman in the world, but I never had a problem with the assistant. She was always nice to my animals and would often talk softly to them and pet them.

I have been affiliated with Dewitt Animal Hospital all my life. My Mother went to school with the original owner (Junior High), Harry Halsel, and started going to his original place on Gifford St., then onto Dewitt when he opened this one. Also, it is in close proximity to where I live now.

We have always found the services, staff and atmosphere to our liking. I have found them to be very caring as well as professional.

Dr. Wilcox has been our vet for many years now and has always demonstrated not just great knowledge but also genuine caring for our pets. He always goes an extra mile by suggesting tests when he is concerned about a potential problem. He immediately calls when the results are in and carefully explains the outcome and suggests appropriate follow-up. He is very friendly and I feel that he truly cares about our beloved pets. The same is true of his staff: they are, without exception, very friendly and very efficient.

I feel that the staff is caring an compassionate. Dr. Wilcox has worked hard to my dog (Ed III) the best possible care. they have helped me after hours and on Sundays. This is the only place that I would bring my dog that has special needs. Dr. Wilcox always calls me back to answer my questions. I feel confident with the Dr.'s advice. This is why I will drive from Camillus to Dewitt for care

When I think of DeWitt Animal Hospital I remember the fine care received there by many pets, all 13 poodles, standard and miniature. The staff is always pleasant, polite, and professional. They allow for special circumstances such as letting my dog enter through the hall door rather than the waiting room full of dogs. I always get my dog back clean, and the waiting room is immaculate and attractive with a fish tank, a rubber flea model over the reception desk, and a television with animal stories. When my dog hears the name Dr. Wilcox, he leaps with joy and will do anything! I feel very fortunate to have had such good experiences with such capable advice and care for my dogs.??

I have been going to DeWitt Animal Hospital for over 25 years, both for my dogs and my cats. The staff has always been compassionate and caring for my animals and my situations. I always recommend the DeWitt Animal Hospital to people I know who are looking for a veterinary hospital either because they are new to the area or because they are unsatisfied with their current vet. - Barbara

For over 35 years our pets - three cats and five dogs - have benefited from the fine health care provided by the veterinarians and staff at DeWitt Animal Hospital. We appreciate the fact that they are seen in a timely fashion and that the staff is very co-operative in providing needed treatment, referrals, medication, and health records. It is also gratifying to know that much effort goes into placing so many homeless animals in adoptive homes.

I have been bringing my pets to DeWitt Animal Hospital since 1967. Not just because of the great medical care, but the entire staff! They are always knowledgeable and efficient. But most of all they are very kind. My pets love to visit Dr. Wilcox and everyone at DeWitt Animal Hospital! - Natalie M.

A year ago I brought a very ill stray black cat to be seen by Dr. Wilcox. He showed great concern for this kitty. I had not seen such compassion and dedication in my 30 years of rescuing animals and dealing with many veterinarians. She continued to improve under his care and was able to be adopted out after her recovery! -Carolyn D.??

I adopt my Buddy dog from here years ago. He was one of the strays they have and had been used for dog fighting. Buddy passed on May 20 of complications of a stroke. Best friend a mom could ever have. Helped me take care of my 2 small kids. I don't know what the place is like now, but then they were very nice. Strays came be great pets, trust me. Love you forever Buddy.

I adopted a dog from them 10 years ago and he was fine; however, I've since gone back to adopt pets and was treated like a criminal.
I live nearby and had become used to hearing the dogs barking - until relatively recently. I noticed that as time went on the barking decreased and then I read about the contract they have with the City of Syracuse.
How can a "Veterinary Hospital" also be a house of destruction? They're taking the lives of creatures who are helpless and at the mercy of those who are supposed to protect them.
It's just wrong and something should be done to stop such means to making a profit.

Dr Quinn is amazing and on the rare chance my dog was lucky enough to get him she didn't ever even so much as yelp. Unfortunately Dr Quinn is rarely the vet on duty- usually she was seen by Dr Wilcox. He always hurt her, made her very uncomfortable, and nervous, and was a bit of a pompous jerk. Then to make matters worse the Dewitt Animal Hospital keeps their records in card files rather than on a computer (21st century anyone?) and there were three different times that they would lose my dog's records only to force me to buy extra vaccines that my dog didn't need. As if their prices weren't steep enough already! I do NOT recommend this vet to ANY pet owner unless they figure out how to use a computer like the rest of the world. Needless to say I have found another vet.

The place is way too small for holding strays and try to find homes for them. I wonder if the public is aware that, if they bring in their pet for boarding, the boarders are next to strays.
Not that there is anything wrong with strays. However, since there is no medical care given to the strays by intake, the risk of picking up a contagious decease, is a possibility. I would not board my dog there, and the prices are comparable to any much better managed facility. I have seen very sick dogs, without any treatment, just waiting to be put down after the five mandatory days are up. How can they??
The "business" of sheltering and placing homeless animals is very profitable, since they have no extra expenses for personnel or maintenance of the building.
Everybody does everything.
The people handling the adoptions are unfamiliar with the animals and I could never figure out what method of matching they are using to be sure animal and adopter are the right match.
Also, the fact that all transactions pertaining to adoptions, are cash only, raises some questions, as well as not being computerized.
I find the staff to be uninformed, rude, without an ounce of compassion, disorganized, in short bad.
The city of Syracuse should have their own shelter. If a town like Camillus can, why not Syracuse

I adopted a dog yesterday.
The staff are professional and friendly.
Do you know that stray animals are brought here for immediate medical care and housing? If you ever lose a pet or want to rescue a pet, check here first.

I've read the reviews on this page, and it does not sound like the place that I go to for my dog. The receptionist plays and talks to my dog. I adopted my dog through them last year and have continued to take my dog their for all her vets needs. I have not had a bad experience there. I think this vet has a great staff that plays with your pets.

I brought my dog in for her yearly shots and exam today. Instead I received only shots, and a bill for an exam which never occured. As an added bonus, my docile golden retriever was placed in a muzzle, because of her "dangerous behavior". Dangerous behavior apparently includes quivering in the corner, afraid of a gruff and extremely unfriendly veterinarian. He even had the nerve to threaten to impound my dog if she snapped at him (something she had never done in any of her 5 visits to him or anyone else in her 4 years). Only later did I find out the real reason my dog was so scared. Apparently she could sense something I did not know....that this vet HATES dogs and actually makes part of his income by killing strays for the city of Syracuse after only a 5 day hold. Only bring your dog here if you want her to be mistreated and you wish to be threatened and overcharged.

DO NOT EVERY GO HERE. ANY MONEY YOU SPEND IS JUST USED TO KILL POOR DEFENSELESS ANIMALS. TAKE YOUR PET TO STACK ANIMAL HOSPITAL OR THE PLACE IN JAMESVILLE DEWITT. NO VET SHOULD EVER JUST KILL ANIMALS, THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO CARE. I'M NOT SAYING THAT THE VET CARE IS BAD, BUT THEY DO KILL ALL ANIMALS IN 5 DAYS UNLESS THEY ARE ADOPTED OR CLAIMED BY THEIR OWNERS.

I have lots of animals and have tried lots of vets to find a place I feel comfortable with and that I can afford.

DeWitt Animal hospital is good. The staff is caring, the hours are good, and the prices, while a bit steep, aren't out of this world.

The waiting room is pretty small but the wait is usually short. The treatment rooms are clean and neat. My animals always received good care there at prices that hurt a bit bit weren't as high as some vets I have been to.

I have now found my "ideal" vet in Cazenovia where I take all my animals but, while I was frequenting DeWitt Animal hospital, I had no complaints.

They do charge a bit more than some but veteranary care is expensive everywhere these days.

If you live in the DeWitt area and need a good vet, this is one to try.
