We've been taking our dogs to the Saugerties Animal Hospital since we moved here 5 years ago. Our 4-Legged family has received nothing but the finest professional, as well as concerned care. We've used both Dr. Rothstein, and Dr. Lang and they both are always totally professional. True, the office is sometimes quite busy, but we would highly recommend the Saugerties Animal Hospital to anyone.

Sometimes is good but many times not. He has truly harmed animals that were under his care and is a bit wierd in person in my opinion. I would not take a chance with someone so unreliable in their treatment. I also found his office to be a bit chaotic and some of the staff downright rude. I prefer South Peak or Ulster Animal Hospital over this place. I got bad advice from Rothstein that other vets corrected and my dog was fine after that. He also seems insecure in himself and I think this is because he knows he has really messed up in the past. Just to be safe, take your pet some place else. I also heard some bad things from others.

We have 4 cats and 2 dogs. We have been taking them to Saugerties Animal Hospital since 2007 and we know what we are talking about when we say that Dr. Rothstein, Dr. Jackson, and Dr. Lang ALL have top notch experience, expertise and kindness with animals of all kinds. Between Dr. Rothstein and Dr. Jackson, they both saved 2 of our cats from a terrible bacterial infection in 2007. They both took the time to examine them thoroughly and prepare them quickly to get them the right treatment. They saved their lives and I would recommend Dr. Rothstein and Dr. Jackson and the whole staff at Saugerties Animal Hospital to anyone in need of professional and caring animal care. No human is perfect and mistakes are made but to those people who go out of their way to bash this facility and their doctors, they need to take into consideration that for every bad situation that may occur, there are dozens of positive outcomes that occur as well. I love my animals and would recommend Saugerties Animal hospital to everyone!

I have taken many critters to the Saugerties Animal Hospital, dogs, cats, goats, turkeys, puppies....etc., for regular care and often in emergency/life threatening situations. The treatment given my animals has always been thorough and usually successful. A few times nothing could be done to avoid the fate of death and on those RARE occasions the compassion shown to me was astounding. I find the office staff to be friendly and the staff of veterinarians to be excellent diagnosticians.

Dr. Rothstein does not suffer fools or bad attitudes well?. And he should not have to. Go in with a good attitude and the information they need to care for your pet and you could not be in better hands.

My 11 year old dog had a small eyelid tumor that started to bleed on a Sunday night at 8:30 p.m. I called the emergency number and got a call back from a vet within 5 minutes!! I have been VERY pleased with the regular service at this animal hospital, and now I can honestly say I am impressed with the emergency service as well.

The people who work here are awesome and extremely knowledgable. I have no hesitation to call on them for anything and they respond instantly even going as far as giving advice over the phone.

Of course a veterinarian has to be good with animals but Rothstein is just superb. Recently the family pet got an ear infection. When we brought the dog to this animal hospital she was being very difficult. Rothstein was able to control the dog while still being very gentle and made a proper prognosis.

Doctor Howie is one of the best veterinarians around! About 8 years ago he saved one of our cats lives after he was hit by a car. You woudln't even be able to tell he was ever hurt! He also gives families who have been bringing their pets there for years, like mine, great price cuts when it comes to shots and medications.

PROS: very good vet, friendly, takes great care of animals
CONS:

This is a very dangerous place for your animals. No kidding but this Rothstein character is known in some local circles as Dr. Death! I know of a dog that he was starving to death..poor dog was so skinny that his eye socket fell in and his legs kept collapsing. Owner finally got wise and took the dog to another vet..they had to fatten him up to save his life. Dog was 75 lbs and should have weighed 125 lbs and Dr. Death Rothstein kept telling the owner that the dog was too fat. FAT? This vet has to retire and not soon enough. There are other horror stories around.

dr. jackson and dr. rothstein have cared for my pets for over 12 years - they go above and beyond to make sure that your beloved, furry family members are healthy and happy. i have had several emergency "porcupine" incidents over the years and dr. jackson did not hesitate to meet me at the office after hours and pull each and every quill out of my dingbat bulldog's mouth and palate -stitched her up when she faced off with a groundhog - and they took care of her 8 pups beautifully. we recently adopted a new puppy and are absolutely going to stay with our vets and feel confident that she will thrive under their care.

Pros: very professional and compassionate - they really care!

Cons: don't support raw diet for canines

This vet is so horrid that I don't know where to begin warning people not to use him or his partner Jackson.

They almost starved a Mastiff to death..they kept telling the owner to keep the dog on a diet and the dog's muscles faded away, even the eye socket fell in. Finally when the dog was almost dead a friend told the owner to please feed the dog and the dog recovered. Even at skin and bones Rothstein told the owner that the dog was overweight.

Rothstein tells people with diabetic animals to feed a high grain diet..there are surely ramifications from this because diabetics should eat high protein and some fat and little grains.

Rothstein flipped out when someone suggested to the owner of a dog to get a second opinion. Rothstein kicked the person out of the office for suggesting this. Who knows if the dog really needed to be put down?

Rothstein has told people their dog's needed an operation and they didn't.

The office said that a cat had a broken leg, put a cast on too tightly and the poor cat's leg swelled up. The owner removed the cast to save the cat's leg and it turned out that the leg wasn't even broken.

There are so many horror stories. Rothstein is known around the area as Dr. Death.

BE WARNED!

Pros: will fit you in if seriously needed

Cons: sometimes a considerable wait to be seen (see above "pro" as reason)

Where do I start. My dog had displasia since 2/08. Dr Jackson recommended Rimadyl for the pain. She took all the lab work necessary to make sure my dog was healthy enough to withstand the medicine. He was Dr Jackson told me to give the dog the Rimadyl when needed. It wasn't working so Dr. Rothstein told me to give it 2 times a day every single day. That's what did it. In May my dog started to have diarreha and throwing up.. No tests had been done to monitor his liver for damage due to the Rimadyl. He had surgery in August and again no lab tests were done to see if he would withstand the surgery. He got very sick shortly after the surgery, I brought him back several times. They did not know what it was. In one week in September I had the dog to the vet 5 times. The bill was astronomical with all the meds they tried. I have to say that Dr. Jacksn tried but had no idea what was wrong. My dog died on 9/21/08 in my arms from a heart attack. The truth is I requested all his records and noticed that the lab work that was done on 9/18 showed that his liver had been destroyed. The bottom line. They should have monitored him. I adopted another pet and will not be taking him to this vet.

The office can get busy, yes, but that's because everyone wants to bring their pets there. Dr. Rothstein is, in my experience, an outstanding diagnostician, and Dr. Jackson a brilliant surgeon. The reason people have to wait is because the vets take as much time as necessary with people's pets. I have found them to be caring, accurate, and available in an emergency. True, if they don't know what is wrong, they say so, and recommend specialists: I'd rather have that response than go to a vet who pretends to know something but doesn't.

We looked for the right vet for years before we found Saugerties Animal Hospital, and we're glad we did.

I took my pet to this same vet for the same problem now three times. They have no idea what it is and I have had to tell them what I was told it was from another vet. Then they go .... oh right, it might be that....

They could not find my original records and so had nothing to refere to.

They told me one thing on the phone about office visit at $41. being charges once a year, and the fee there after being different based upon what needed to be done.

I found myself listening to costs rather then to hear what was wrong with my pet. I said point blank..... you have no idea what is wrong with my dog, do you...... the Vet, said bluntly,,,, no I don't .!

Now unless I stand the cost of lab work, tests, and maybe a scraping, which costs almost $300. altogether they can not tell me what is wrong, yet they chargem be $109. for the same information they gave me 6 months prior.

Most vets know their business, but sometimes, the business and money, gets in the way of treatment. And this is what I think has happened.

Another Vet in Saugerties, might be helpful.

Dr Rothstein is a great vet. However, the office is so busy it is rare a vet will actually pay attention when examining my pets. The receptionists are too busy to be nice or caring and seem to take pleasure in that. They're going to tell those city people a thing or 2! I have lived in NYC for 32 years and never encountered this level of "professional" behavior. They are simply too busy and are caught up in it. So they are not polite. Makes a difference when your pet is not well, Also, since they are so busy, my pets are not really checked out properly and I get the feeling I am "in the way" although I am paying for the service. Major problems were missed because my pets were not really looked at, too many others waiting. I'm going back to NYC, i do believe i've had enough!
