So much passes through the mind and heart in the remembering of a childhood, snap shots of memories in misty shades of sepia. The sensation of cold winds blowing on bare little girl legs, warm sunshine dulling the worry of a morning spelling bee, the sound of trees in full spring bloom, the weight of a tightly held school bag pressing against a small body; these feelings I still hold deep within my physicality.
I take all of these memories and feelings with me to mark my passage through life. Certainly there is much about past experiences that forms a person but the remembering, that's what places the spirit and warms the heart.
Today I phoned Holy Cross Church for a document, I hadn't visited that beautiful sacred space in many years. The woman who answered was soft spoken and efficient in her manner, a continence I remember well.
A rush of memories surfaced after the call. School days in high ceilinged old class rooms, wooden desks set in long rows, Oh! to be so smart that one earned the honor of first in the row! The room filled with a filtered light from the bank of hug wooden windows; and every space on the walls and doors filled with maps and posters and signs of the season.
If only I had realized then how lovingly those spaces were prepared for us, perhaps I would have appreciated all the effort and the beautiful souls who concerned themselves so with my wellbeing.
My favorite place of all was the magnificent church; even through the self absorption of a child's mind I knew through to my very soul I was in a sacred place, and it held me as gently as a mothers arms. And there at the left of the main altar my most special place of all, Mary's little grotto: the place we all came in celebration of Mary's Month of May, the place I set a bouquet of roses on my wedding day, the place we came to grieve and remember so many people we loved. The holy place that formed my spiritual life and being; the place that formed the woman I would become. For all of these gifts I am forever grateful. To the human beings who's lives were spent in service to The Divine as guardians and mentors of their flock, and to all who where a part of that beautiful community of The Holy Cross, many blessings, you are lovingly remembered by many.

Pros: The feeling of community

Cons: bony knees are poor support for long periods of kneeling!
