My mom and I had a great experience (twice!) at Gotta Knit! Laura and Goldie were absolutely wonderful to work with! The concept of customizing a pattern to me was new. I'm used to picking out a pattern then the yarn, not the other way around. Interesting way to do it. There was a woman working on a project which inspired my mom to do one as well. In helping my mom get all set up, Laura took the time to check her gauge to tailor the pattern the way my mom knits and calculate the amount of yarn needed. She also helped her pick out colors and combination of yarns that would really make the piece look great. They also gave my mom a lot of confidence that yes, she could make the piece and it would be great. There's not a lot of places that take their customer service THAT seriously.

I will definitely shop there again. Their prices are in-line with the market.

Laura and Goldie are friendly and great to work with:
patient and encouraging with a great eye for putting together colors that work so well . The yarn is beautiful. I go there from NJ because of the friendly atmosphere not found in the NJ knitting shops.

I just love this place Gotta Knit. I was interested for a long time in learning how to knit. I shopped around for months trying to find something to my liking and that would fit my hectic schedule. I opted for one on one sessions because then I could control the day I took my lessons. This was back in March. I have since taken three lessons they are affordable. I have had two of my lessons go over the alloted hour and not be charged for it. How many places will do that. True the place is set up like a small studio , but I think it lends an air of intamacy and community then maybe one of the bigger competitors. Gotta Knit is even more affordable then alot of places in Brooklyn, imagine that. So not everything in Manhattan is outrageously priced. I also love the ladies of Gotta Knit I feel welcome everytime I go. If anyone else is shopping around for a place to learn how to knit Gotta Knit is it.

About a year ago, I was looking for a knitting store in my neighborhood, and I came across Gotta Knit. As soon as I entered the store, I felt like I was at home. This place is a true gem! The owners, Goldie and Laura, are inviting and can help with any knitting question you may have. They are patient and can help any level knitter -- from the very beginner to the most advanced.

The wonderful thing about Gotta Knit is they want you to fall in love with a yarn and encourage you to wander around the shop and peruse all the wonderful, unique yarns they have.

The owners have great ideas for projects and and can help you find color/yarn combinations that are amazing (ones I would never have thought of myself!) Once you find the yarn you love, Goldie and Laura will help you to custom design a project/pattern around that yarn.

The store offers workshops/classes periodically (the finishing class was unbelievable and I am signed up for knitting with wire class for the beginning of May). To add to the personal level, they can provide, for a very reasonable fee, private lessons. Goldie teaches the lessons and she is fantastic! One can learn how to knit in one lesson from Goldie or you can brush up on a skill that needs refreshing. The owners can also help you with any questions you have on a project along the way.

There is a large table where customers can sit to begin a project, get help, or just knit. The atmosphere is so inviting and I feel I learn so much each time I step in the store.

The service helps make every project turn out amazing. Gotta Knit is without a doubt, the best full service yarn store in NYC!

I have been to quite a few yarns stores living in NYC, and although I live on the UWS of the city, I travel to midtown to Gotta Knit. Why do you ask? Well I find the hands on service that they give me with each and every project to be amazing. Goldie and Laura encourage me to ask tons of questions so I can be a better knitter. The yarns in the store are special. I cannot help but look around and be tempted to purchase even though I came into the store just for help. I have made some beautiful garments all patterns hand written by Gotta Knit. I feel comfortable there and know that I am getting great service and wonderful yarns for my dollars spent.

One must be very rich, very stupid and enjoy being mistreated in order to step foot in this shop. The two old ladies running the store are extremely rude and the prices of the supplies are just ridiculous.

To be more explicit: you are not allowed to touch anything, if you ask a question and you don't know the knitting jargon, you get yelled at. The place is also very small, so you get pushed around. Prices: about $20 for needles and $10-$40 for a very small knitting reel of wool or cashmere. You need about 4 of those to knit a pair of gloves.

I went to Wal-Mart that day and bought same quality needles and all supplies that I needed for $7. In the "Gotta knit" store I would have spent 60.

I still can't believe the attitude that that lady had... So unbelievably rude?

I have been knitting for many years, but Gotta Knit has made me a knitter! Gotta Knit has taught me the importance of checking one's gauge. They have encouraged me to try new stitches. I can actually create a garment, not just following a pre-printed pattern. I have made many beautiful garments for myself and others. (Not just socks!) Goldie has the patience of a saint when teaching. Laura is a genius at writing patterns and helping you turn a mental (or physical) picture into something that will actually fit and flatter, no matter what your body. They have yarns in a variety of prices to fit all garments and budgets. Gotta Knit is without a doubt, the best full service yarn store in NYC!

It amazes me when people assign motives to the actions of others. Just because one walks into a store and "feels" as if someone looks down on her doesn't mean someone looks down on her.

For my money, GOTTA KNIT has beautiful yarns (including many you can't find elsewhere), helpful staff, and FREE patterns, designed to fit me and the way I knit.

The new location (14 East 34 Street, Floor 5) is clean and bright. The big table in the center invites you to sit down and solve your knitting problems, or play with combinations of color and texture.

Gotta Knit was a complete bust for me. The salesperson was condescending and acted like I barely understood the concept of knitting. For ex, she pointed out to me that I was looking at sock yarn. I replied, with a smile, that I was aware of that, and in fact I've knitted socks before. And then, she told me that if I was afraid of thin yarn, I could always knit it on larger needles. What? These one-sided conversations continued throughout my stay. I was about to blurt out that I have knitting designs published!
Their selection was very limited, and they did not carry the most commonly used yarns (Debbie Bliss, Cascade, Rowan, Karabella). They mostly sold expensive cashmere from obscure brands.
Even though this store is close to where I work, I do not anticipate to go back there.

I went to Gotta Knit with a serious knitting emergency. I'd found a mistake in the lace scarf I'm making, and tried to unravel a few rows, but only made the problem worse. The ladies at Gotta Knit not only fixed my scarf so I didn't lose my hard work, but were extremely patient and understanding.
I can't wait to take a class there! They have a beautiful selection of yarns, and amazing patterns for all levels of knitters.

I've read with amazement the review that trashes the owners of this store. I live in Lake Tahoe and every time I come to New York, I visit Laura and Goldie. Since I am a knitter, and just starting out, I find their advice for my projects invaluable. I also like their assortment and their variety of yarn the is best.

Yes, they are a kniting store, and they say that up front...hence the name. But if you are looking for a place that will help you find a KNITTING project to your level of expertise and just the right yarn to use for it, got to GottaKnit!

You won't be disappointed...really!

I went to scope out the store a few days before a crochet class I was having for my friends. Same ugly cramped space with same ugly rude owner. The old location was the same, but this was the only store open in my area on the day I needed to go, so I was forced to not only give her my business and that of my 4 friends but to contend with the rude ugly attitude of the owner too. On my scouting visit, said owner was sat alone knitting something hideous as usual, I made small-talk to be polite and also to let her know that I wasn't a noob because she sizes you up like a dog and treats you as such if she thinks for a second you'll accept that behaviour, then busied myself poking around. Her eyes boring into my back following my every move while she breathed heavily made me uncomfortable. Every time I made an inquiry, I felt extremely unwelcome. I mentioned I had a group of beginner friends coming in in a few days for a crochet class and she snapped. In an abruptly condescending & snarly way she said well I'd better come early because this place gets packed in afternoons. #1 - I didn't ask. #2 - I already said we'd be coming in the afternoon and never gave the impression that was flexible. #3 - The place is always deserted. I've only ever seen 1 other customer while I was there in the history of my visits. On my second visit - we show up exactly as promised and not a single customer is seen leaving or entering during our whole trip. During it, she butted into my conversation with my friend and rudely contradicted what I was saying about a certain yarn. I ignored her tone and tried to understand what she was saying for my own education but she took it as a personal affront instead and argument instead. So, she's useless at teaching as well. Then as I went to put said yarn back properly, she berated me about messing up the yarn before I could explain that I was actually trying to put it back properly ! Note: Yarn stores are meant to provide knitting help besides the yarns

Hey guys,

It seems as though Gotta Knit has moved. They are no longer on 6th ave, but are now on 34th Street between 5th and Madison right next to Staples. The new store looks great and they are on the fifth floor with an elevator, so no more stairs.

I like to visit many yarn shops when I travel so I'm used to all types. I can say that this one did not have an inviting feeling. I was greeted when I came in but I was never asked if I needed help finding anything. Thankfully I'm an experienced knitter and don't need much assistance. The inventory has a limited variety and nothing in the store is marked with a price. I won't shop at a store that doesn't list prices because it seems untrustworthy. As if they can change the price on a whim, based on the person they are selling it to. Out of curiosity I wanted to check their prices but the two women were engrossed in a conversation with a regular customer and it took awhile to get their attention. The prices were high and the staff unattentive, so I left. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone I know. There are better places.

When I walked into Gotta Knit two years ago to learn to knit, I had no idea what a gem I had stumbled upon. I found a yarn store that does so much more than just sell yarn. GK provides an amazing selection of luxury and other high quality yarns and SERVICE, SERVICE AND MORE SERVICE. When I say service, I mean everything from teaching you how to cast on to how to knit to knitting different stitch patterns. They write patterns for you (that actually fit), fix knitting screw ups (I have had my share) and find color combinations that are amazing (ones I would have never thought of myself). As well, the two owners are accomplished knitters who help other accomplished knitters (I am not one yet but I have witnessed many--knitter's envy). The YARNS: their cashmeres and mohairs are ABSOLUTELY delicious and their marinos and less expensive yarns are well-selected and edited. In addition, they have some great ideas for projects. You can find funky ones (check out the purple knit fur mittens on the wall...to die for!!!), felted and knit handbags as well as classic projects like hats, sweaters and baby blankets. You can even rip a page out of a fashion mag, bring it in and they will figure out how to make it! I have simply not found any other yarn store in NYC that has both the level of service and yarn selection that GK has.

I am brand new to knitting and was shopping for basics. When I realized Gotta Knit didn't have many basic items stocked, I decided to go elsewhere. (The employee said needles and crochet hooks were "on order"--thought it was strange that a knitting store would let stock run down so low.) As I turned to go w/o purchasing anything, the employee and the 3 or 4 middle-aged women (I'm one, too, by the way) sitting at the knitting table literally glared at me, to my face as well as through the back of my head! Did not get a pleasant vibe from this place and would not go back. Went down to The Point on Bedford, where I not only found what I needed, but also two helpful and kind employees--and women of all ages knitting together. Much better.

i went in with my new daughter....as a novice knitter to make a baby afghan for my first little granddaughter due in june. everyone was so helpful and so kind in spite of my lack of knowledge and experience. i have completed the afghan and am now working on a shell for myself.
it has been a stressful few months for me, and being with the sales people and customers at gotta knit has been relaxing and joyous. i was the new kid on the block but was welcomed and encouraged and treated as a friend as well as a customer.

This is a great knitting shop. The people are always friendly and they have a great selection on yarn, books, patterns, needles and anything else you might need. I had to go in there for my girlfriend and I had no idea where to end begin but the staff were really helpful and I was able to find everything she need. The pricing is not very expensive but not cheap either.

I had to go in there for my girlfriend and I had no idea where to end begin but the staff were really helpful and I was able to find everything she need. The pricing is not very expensive but not cheap either.

The biggest plus for this shop is its central location. Aside from that, there's a friendly staff willing to help you figure out or find what you need. Not a vast selection, but certainly the basics and some interesting and unusual yarns.

After visiting several yarn shops in the city, I found a place where I feel comfortable and welcomed and that place is Gotta Knit! I am not an experienced knitter but Laura on two occassions has created and adjusted a patterns for me on the spot. They offer beautiful yarns and one-on-one help which I have never received from any other yarn store in Manhattan. The staff is friendly and courteous and I will be a returning customer for a long time.

Pros: Yarn selection, Very helpful

There aren't a lot of great patterns for guy's sweaters. I was completely amazed that the gals at GottaKnit were so great about writing me one. They were really helpful and coached me every step of the way. I'D HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM TO ANY SERIOUS KNITTER.

A friend who had been to Gotta Knit warned me that the staff was a bit "grumpy." When I went in to ask a quick question AND purchase a bunch of stuff, there were 2 women on staff immersed in conversation and knitting with a customer/friend. When they finally got around to assisting me the instruction was helpful, but delivered in an almost annoyed fashion. I chalked this up to a personal style thing but I wasn't comfortable - not terribly rude, but not even basically friendly.

Pros: quiet, not a madhouse

I was pleased with the shop - the yarn selection is good and is all quality yarns - I don't think there is one skein of man made yarn there so be prepared to pay for quality yarn. The service is good - the woman was on the phone a lot with friends which was annoying but that's only because I needed help - had I been there to look for a long time I probably wouldn't have been bothered by it. I think the prices are fair and the service is good.

The variety of yarn is limited, but it's a good shop with helpful people.

Once in a while the GK staff seems a little overwhelmed, but that's because they help anyone who walks in the door with any kind of knitting problem (it's a yarn store, not a sewing store). I've always received excellent, practical advice, the classes are first-rate, and Ann in particular encourages knitters of all abilities.

I visited Gotta Knit for the first time last night. A friend had recommended it, but when I read the Citysearch reviews, I was hesitant. But I listened to them helping person after person as I browsed their selection. Even though it was right before closing time, they were helpful, polite and knowledgeable. Maybe you just caught them on a bad day?
