I am a bit biased. The only two places that I go for Thai is Sripraphai in Queens and Amanpuri in Thailand, so when I found this place I was shocked at the quality. Yeh, I said it, I am cooler than you. This place is cozy, the staff is friendly and the food is excellent. Despite the occasional wait, it is worth visit.

The last 2 days we all have been smelling a horrible chemical fuel fumes coming from the alley that connects Land & 5 apartments buildings in the alley.
Yesterday when I came home I couldn't breathe in my bedroom & had to turn on 2 bionair filters (which helped a little).
This morning the smell waved into my bedroom & I looked outside my kitchen window .
Land was barbecuing a whole baby piglet on one of those pits where the piglets rolls around over the coals .

I went out there to complain.
But , they ignored me till a gentle man that lives above the restaurant complained too.
Him & his wife just had 2 week old babies .
Than they took the piglet inside b/c of him(the macho cook wouldn't listen to a woman).

Please , don't give part patronage to this restaurant .
Not ,only do they not care about their neighbors but have absolutely no care for the environment !!!

PS
I'll be posting the gruesome picture on the internet .
For those who know me ... & my love of animals .
It was a hard thing to look at and take a photo of that innocent piglet .
But , I felt that I had to put away my emotions & expose the horror I saw in my own home turf !!!

I had passed by here many times before I actually decided to dine here late on a rainy Sunday. Land is perfectly New York: Old World cuisine complemented by New World sleekness; unpretentious and yet still conscious of its Upper West Side location. Its slim dining room and dim lighting exuded a date vibe, though the New Age-y music was a little trite. Oh, and the food: they offer classics like pad see ew, which came lightly sauced and full of veggies, and pan-Asian dishes like lamb in curry. Dessert ended the meal on a high note: creamy and smooth taro root custard topped with pistachio ice cream, and a homemade heart-shaped Thai iced tea cookie. We also received very pleasant service, even as we were the last people in the restaurant and watched the kitchen staff finally sit down to its meal.

Whenever my husband and I come to the city, we absolutely HAVE to eat at LAND. We dont' care that it is cramped and it is hard to get a seat because the food and service are great. You're never waiting FOREVER for your food and the ambience at night is quite lovely. We always get the Thai ice teas or some cocktail for drinks. I love the whole red snapper entre which is fried and served with an assortment of vegetables and rice. The noodles with beef are also very yummy!! Also, try the sample platter for an appetizer - the curry chicken puffs are delicious. There is sooooo much to choose on this menu, it is sure not to disappoint!!
True story -no BS - when I first went to LAND to eat, my husband and I were soooo impressed we went back the next night. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw another couple who were there the previous night also!! That alone should tell anyone that this place is definately a NYC keeper.

Pros: excellent food, fast and polite service, ambience at night

Cons: small and cramped seating (may be seated next to loud obnoxious talker)

We were out of Zabar's coffee & their E.V. Olive Oil, our Colorado friends were visiting their kids in N.Y., & it provided the perfect excuse to drive up, meet them for lunch, & get some food shopping done. We left the choice of restaurant to them, knowing that even if they weren't New Yorkers they'd pick something pleasing. Our instincts paid off big-time.

A very short walk from Zabar's, between 81st & 82nd Sts. on Amsterdam Ave. is a small, narrow Thai place called Land. There wasn't a thing on the menu that didn't sound terrific & the people on either side of us seemed to be enjoying their food immensely. Although Zagat says there can be a wait, we had no problem being seated....4 adults & our friends' 6 yr. old grandson (who's a born epicure).

What we ordered doesn't make much differrence. There wasn't a thing on the table that didn't look beautiful & didn't taste wonderful. Spices were adjusted to the requested heat, service was friendly & prompt, & when we got the bill we couldn't believe our eyes. Our share, splitting everything down the middle so that we paid for 1/2 their grandson's meal, came to $33 including tea, tax & tip!! I didn't think anything like that was possible in Manhattan. No wonder the place was full.

Land is highly recommended.

Zagat: 22-17-18-$26
"Authentic" Thai lands on the Upper West Side at this "ambitious" newcomer where the "food's amazing & so is the price"...even if the space approximates a "walk-in closet" If you can't get a seat, take it home.

Land is a literally a skinny hallway. Although the restaurant is small and narrow, it was lively and vivacious when you got inside. The stylish dim lighting give it an alluring, seductive undertone. Definitely go for the Drunken Noodle With Chicken, which is only $9.

Land was one of the best Thai restaurants on the UWS, but it has now gotten too comfortable in its popularity (you can never get a seat at night) and it serves burnt and over-cooked rice and obviously pre-cooked stir-fry...take a look at the color of vegetables to see for yourself. It is a shame because there are not a lot of good thai restaurants to choose from in the West 80s. You might be better off with Gray's Papaya!

Yes, it's a bad pun, but the food at Land is nothing short of spectacular. I have to say, it's the best Thai food I've had outside of Thailand (and yes, I've been there). The food it authentic, and took me back to my days on Khao San Road. That reference is probably lost on you if haven't been to Thailand, but just take it from a "Thai food snob" as I've been called (really, I'm not - I just like good Thai food). Anyhow, if there's a drawback to Land, it's that the place is very small, they don't take reservations, and you might have to wait a bit. Having said that, they do take your number down and call you (allowing you to walk around and check out all the other UWS options), and the decor is actually quite nice. If you want amazingly authentic Thai food, with nice ambiance at a very affordable price, then stake your claim to Land...

I wish it were one of those "secret" spots that no one knew about, unfortunately this is possibly the hottest chill restaurant on the UWS! Though you may need to put your name on the list and go to the Dead Poet next door for 20 or 30 minutes, it's all worth it in the end- heck i LOVE the Dead Poet! Anyways, the food is incredible, especially for what you pay for! I LOVE The curry chicken puffs, the soups are amazing, and so are the vegatable dumplings. All of the entrees are fab including the duck and whole snapper, don't forget to try the noodles! Also, the pad thai is great, but nothing special so thai lovers, VENTURE! They make a great lychee martini, among other fab drinks. I have never ordered from Land so I can't speak for the delivery service but the service in the restaurant is all about smiles! I can't wait to come back next week! Also, ask for the dollar-off drink tokens when you wait, good for The Dead Poet! The music is never too loud, though just perfect and the lighting is very hip (though not too dark). BRAVO!

The food here is delicious!! One of the best places in the city. Their Thai Ice Tea is great and comes in a big mug. Try the Salmon rice, pad thai, and any of the curry dishes. Ambience is also great. The only cons are cramped tables (they have to move tables just so you can get into your seat) and a small menu.

I had to place an order to take home to my husband. The waittress was a sweetheart. I loved everything about the place. I will make sure I will go back soon.

I'm not a food snob and I can't claim knowledge of authenticity as I've never been to Thailand (although I have been to Sripraphai), but the food at Land didn't taste Thai at all. I got drunken noodles with chicken and they tasted exactly like the chicken lo mein you can get in any Chinese restaurant. They had none of that Thai flavor or spiciness (despite the 3-star spicy warning). My boyfriend said the exact same thing about his entree. The appetizers were alright and the service was great, but the entrees just didn't taste right so I don't really see any reason to go back to Land. I was happy that at least we were seated right away and didn't have to suffer the long wait this place usually has.

So after moving to NYC I have struggled to find GOOD THAI.... there is a complete lack of choice and quality in NY.... LAND Thai does actually come very close. The home delivery is very fast, comes HOT in 10-15 minutes and the service is great - they even keep your details on hand which saved the hassle of repeating your address 4 times in a foreign accent! Great Thai at a very good price - highly recommended. Eat in ain't bad either! Try it for yourself. :-)

The Lady Friend and I went here on a Friday night in mid-April. As expected, it was crowded but their system of suggesting to go the Dead Poet next door works well. They take your number and call you when a table opens up. As for the restaurant itself, the L(B)F and I had a good time there. The food was good, the decor was simple and the lighting was muted enough that my scars didn't show but bright enough that I could see that the L(B)F chewed with her mouth closed. It's definitely a good date place as it has great atmosphere without appearing that you're trying too hard.

Land used to be a tiny gem of a place with assertively spiced Thai food and a long wait. The staff would take your cell phone and direct you next door to the Dead Poet, which is a tiny gem of a bar. Unfortunately, success seems to have gone to its head. Not only is the food not as consistent as it used to be (the spring rolls, for example, were soggy and rather bland on my last visit), the wait has become entirely unreasonable. 45 minute waits regularly drag on much, much longer, and the staff seems to be entirely incapable of managing the crowds. With other Thai restaurants in the neighborhood which are also inexpensive and delicious, there's no need to put up with attitude and rudeness.

Title says it all really. This tiny gem can't be faulted. Their $7 lunch special would still be good value at twice the price. I can't believe I found Thai food as good as in Thailand just one block from my apartment.

Don't think it is the best Thai food I have ever tasted but def the best on the UWS. Staff is excellent and so is food and the prices are perfect. It was lots of fun when it was BYOB but now they have their liquor license - oh well! The only thing that has gone a little downhill with this place since they opened is the takeout - not same quality as it used to be and not as good when you eat there.

Thai food is SUPPOSED to be HOT! The food alone was enough to make this place hot, but the outstanding service and value will probably force them to move to larger accomodations. Every dish was quite special, drinks, appitizers, entrees and desserts. There was not a single thing out of place.

The other reviewers AREN'T related to the new owners or on hallucinogenics. Food here IS top-notch while amazingly, the prices are bargain-basement. Delivery 'S so fast you'll swear the order takers are clairvoyant, and both eat-in and delivery are recommended (we've observed that the tiny digs get a bit overextended at peak times, especially since it was still BYOB when we ate there in mid-April, so take-out's a good option). Fantastic Thai tea & excellent chicken wraps, tho' all we've sampled was good.

Found this place just walking by. The great smell (of rice) inside the restaurant made us wait for a table. We were very pleased. The food was great. The prices are excellent. You can leave your number with the host and he will call you when it's your turn. we were waiting there for 20 minutes and he really called people on his list one by one. We really liked the food (and the salad). Excellent prices. main dishes below 10$. Portions were great too. Drinks (some pear cocktail) were excellent even though on the expensive sida at 9-10$. Will definitely go there again.

Just like my dream my dream comes true to finally found a very good Thai restaurant on the upper west side. When I first walked by I told myself that I've got to come for dinner there one night without any expectation other than the excitment of having thai restaurant in the neigborhood. After dining there with my friends I have got to give Land an A plus because of everything there are more than what I expected. All the dishes are authentic thai
