My wife and I just returned from our trip to Crystal Grove, and to be honest, we had a great time! The facilities were clean and nice. We stayed in one of their cabins which was clean and comfortable (and the ceiling fan was a lifesaver from the heat we've been having!).

We actually had the mines to ourselves on Saturday, and the owners were quite friendly and helpful. He stopped by our cabin one night while we were outside just to chat and see how our day went. She wasn't terribly talkative, but still nice.

Crystal Grove is the opposite of what you'll find at the KOA and Ace of Diamonds mines in Middleville. It's a small place run by the husband and wife and is NOT commercialized like the "big name" places. They strive to maintain a level of conservancy with the utilities by asking you to turn the lights off in the bathroom/showers when you're done, and by putting in sink and shower controls that must be held on. It's a challenge to shower one handed, but it's doable. If you've got little kids, be prepared to help them clean up as they won't be able to reach the shower controls.

We opted for the "scavenger" method to find our diamonds, and actually had some pretty decent luck. The rains at night helped to uncover several good quality diamonds. A hammer and chisel will get you some nice ones from the many rocks inside the mine, as well.

We both enjoyed our stay, and would consider returning, if only to avoid the commercialization of the other mines.

Today we discovered a true Diamond in the rough by the name of Crystal Grove Diamond Mines. My family had visited both Herkimer and Ace of diamond mines on more than one occasion and were pleasantly surprised to find at Crystal Grove a place more geared for family than commercialism. We stayed on two oversized campsites in a campground that was beautifully maintained. At the price they charged for the tent sites, we REALLY got our moneys worth. My wife commented that the restrooms were the cleanest she had ever been in. We found the staff to be not only knowledgeable but friendly, courteous and posessing the patience of saints when dealing with our numerous children. We almost decided not to try Crystal Grove once we read the bad review on it, but something about the way that review was written made me think the authors command of the english language MAY have been more than partially to blame for their bad experience. This is diamond minning...you DO get down and dirty , so said comment was indeed well within context. Maybe some people should stop being so uptight and JEALOUS and try enjoying beautiful experiences like what Crystal Grove has to offer. In any case, we are glad we decided to see for ourselves as Crystal Grove was WELL worth the 3 hour drive .
"But did you find any diamonds?" you are probably asking. In the two days we stayed there my wife and children found more than 400 diamonds.....some larger than a golf ball. Compared to what we found at Herkimer and Ace, Crystal Grove was the clear winner! Now i don't mean to imply that Herkimer and Ace were in any ways a bad experience as that was most certainly not the case, but for an overall family experience Crystal Grove won our hearts. Keep up the good work, guys!

Hello to all this may concern,

I have been mining for over 6 years, 2 years just Herkimer Diamonds. I have gone to just about every mine that has ever had Herkimer Diamonds in the rocks or soil and sorry this is the worst place I've been to.

My wife and I review how is the owner digging reliability advice is when we asked him/her questions about mining pretending we didn??t know a darn thing. He told us to dig in the soil and pointed to where we needed to dig. We know that the spot he showed use wouldn??t have any diamond in it when I looked at the landscape. To start we dug there for over 4 hours not finding anything, as we knew. Why didn??t we leave and change mining spots since there are 3 locations to choose from? Thats because he kept checking out our process and while checking out my wife... Let alone making flirty remarks, and comments like "I am surprised she gets down and dirty" or "I found being on knees is easier, you can get up and in it" so I rest my case. Also, this kept happening on multiple days.

Now, the living standards. The cabins were okay, but not really for the price. Especially since we saw a family run out saying they saw bats in one of their cabins. Haha well they did, but it was still funny to watch. However, i found it rude and inconsiderate that he chased the bats and gave them the same one 15 minutes later instead of giving them another cabin since no one was there and no one came a week later.

Then comes the owners, the husband puts up a fake smile and watches everyone from a far. No joke, and once your stay is almost up his true side comes out, I'll explain later. The wife, now lets just say we didnt see her anywhere out of the main office and when we did the day we came we asked if we could get mining ticket as she was closing the door to get something from her house. She replied "sure" in a nasty tone. Her house was less then 20 feet away from the office and come on we are on vacation let alone your customers. Now, I bring up the husband fake tone, and this event infuriated me and my wife that we promised to never come back! The last day we stayed there we wanted to take a shower 2 hours before we left and we needed to check out. 2 HOURS BEFORE CHECK OUT he pulls up on his atv and says in the nastiest tone "what are you two doing?" We replied "we are taking a shower, we are allowed right?" He says "no, you aren't allowed you should be leaving now" and we said "check out is in 2 hours isn't it?" He replies "yes, but I appreciate you not wasting the water so if you could..." He didn't even let us use the bathroom, so we left. We a) are both in our 20s, b) took 5 showers out of the 7 days we stayed there, c) we respectful to him, his wife, and everyone living there if you think reading this "oh they must have been youngsters or rude individuals". No we are trying to share with everyone our experiences so they don't go through what we had to go through. I will never forget this situation, so please don't make the same mistake we did. Good luck and happy mining.
-John and Courtney

P.S: As experienced miners and mining in each of the 3 areas for a couple of days each we barely found any Herkimer Diamonds compared to the more popular mines out there.

Crystal Grove Campsite is a place where you can go to either get away from it all or just spend a few hours digging the area's famous "Herkimer Diamonds" which are VERY CLEAR double terminated quartz crystals. They have 2 cabins on the grounds that you can rent for about $75 a day, or you can bring your own tent/camper and use one fo the many sites that have water and electricity hookups for a bit less. Everything is within easy walk of the restrooms and the people who run it are very friendly. We really enjoyed our day of "breaking rock" to find the crystals and came home with MANY excellent "diamonds". They also have a rock oriented gift shop where you can buy just about anything you can think of that pertains to rocks.

We rented a cabin for the weekend this past summer at Crystal Coves. The staff was very pleasant and easily answered all our questions. The cabins were neat and homey feeling. The rest areas were within easy reach even in the dar, and they supply power at all the sites. It cost about $75 a night, which wasn't bad. They also have a small gift shop that sells all kinds of minerals and rocks.

We took a day to visit the Crystal Cove "Diamond" Mines and tried our hand at the hard work of breaking rocks for a day. This camp features "mines" which are actually open pit quarries where you can dig for "Herkimer Diamonds" These prized crystals are known for thier double terminated points and amazing clarity. We found many of them, my son found the largest I've ever seen of these kinds fo crystals, which was 4 inches long, perfectly shaped and perfect clarity. They feature a picnic are near the mines, 3 cabins you can rent out for the summer months, weekends or just a day or two. They have many other tent camping areas and provide power and water at most camp sites, with easy to reach bathroom areas.
