Matrix seemed like a good deal: low price, underground parking, and plenty of machines. There are a lot of negatives: it's not clean in the mornings, there is a male worker who "cleans" the women's locker room in the mornings when the female customers are trying to shower, etc, and management ignores members' emails/requests.

The guy who cleans the women's room will yell into the women's locker room but if we reply that we're still in there (obvious!), he just walks in! If you ask him to use the restroom while he's cleaning the toilets, he tells you to wait. He's even opened the changing curtains on customers. I don't get this at all. The gym should be cleaned BEFORE it opens. On Mondays, it's absolutely disgusting in the mornings and male customers agree.

Management has been asked to consider opening earlier on Saturdays--6 am instead of 7 am. This has been ignored. On the other hand, when Matrix is staff late opening the gym in the mornings, customers wait around for them to come around. Something is not right.

This place claims it's great but management needs to realize that most of their customers live in that neighborhood and Matrix is the only gym in the Upper Ditmars part of Astoria. If a NYSC opened in that neighborhood opened up, I'm sure many would leave Matrix. A few small, customer-friendly changes would go a long way.

I've been a member for several months. The positives are: it's always clean, there is free underground parking and you will always get a machine. I've gone a few times on Sunday mornings -- only to find that the person who is supposed to open hasn't shown up! Usually people wait around until someone comes to open the place. It should open at 7 am but I've gotten there as late as 8.30 am only to find several other members hanging around. I also came in once during the early morning and found the woman on the desk brushing her teeth in the sink that is used to prepare drinks. Management should institute a few rules at the front desk about that sort of behavior. The classes are standard fare and the instructors can be found at other local gyms. It's an okay gym and the price is reasonable.

This is hands-down the best (and cleanest) gym that I have ever joined. After having been disappointed with grubby workout centers with sub-par equipment (e.g., Bally's), this place was a refreshing change. The staff are attentive, polite, helpful, and highly conscientious. Annual membership fees are very reasonable, and you can pay month-to-month without going under contract (contrast this with Bally's, where some unctuous slickster ropes you into an extended contract penalizing you for leaving early).

I tried every gym in Astoria before I joined the Matrix and this is what I have to say.
1) it is extremely clean and towels are always available.
2) Staff is very nice and friendly (Try that at the BQE or The Rock)
3) Only gym that lets you a 14 days pass with no committment. (The most you get at others is a 3 days)
4) The classes and instructors are great wish they would have more on weekends .
4) Parking, Parking parking.
5) Never crowded.

I have never done a review like this before, so please bear with me. I have been a member of this gym for about 9 months. As far as management is concerned, they do a good job keeping the place in order. Once I had a minor complaint, but the manager responded quickly and the problem was resolved. Overall, the place has a very clean appearance and lots of equipment. If you live in the area or plan to, definitely check this place out. It is not the cheapest gym in the area, but it is a BETTER gym and I feel I am getting my moneys' worth. FREE PARKING TOO! Thank You.
