A friend and I had a really nice lunch. The food was delicious - risotto was fantastic! Lovely server - attentive but not obtrusive. The room is very attractive and the noise level is reasonable.

Even better than I expected. I went w/2 friends and we ordered a bottle of wine, 3 appetizers and 2 entrees to split so we could have a little of everything and they were all fantastic! I definitely would recommend this restaurant to friends."

The only thing going for this restauraunt is its intimate setting. The food is average and the service sub par. Wine list is poor as well.

Extremely slow service for ridiculously high prices and my meal was not what I ordered! You're paying top restaurant prices for diner food. Not worth it.

We go to the Village regularly. Even without a reservation on a Friday evening, the hosts make sure we get seated. There is a regular menu and a bistro menu with burgers etc. We always go for the roast chicken, the best we've found in NY. There's an attractive prix fixe as well that comes with a glass of wine. It's just a nice, comfortable place with excellent food at reasonable prices.

My friend invited me for dinner on a Friday night, made no reservations but still had a good seat. The waiter was very polite, and attentive. We had salmon, it was very fresh and delicious. The steak was so yummy in my tummy. The ambiance is nice, not too noisy which is great for a great conversation for two people. My friend ordered a red wine and I had a sparkling wine, both wines were very good as well. I will definitely go back there. Definitely bring a date with you to have fabulous food.

Village Restaurant is a great restaurant. It's like going to your favorite uncle's house who perpetually knows and cooks your favorite food, but with the focus of a chef. Village is a neighborhood haunt. It's great for singles, couples and groups of friends. There is a bar menu for those who are regulars and have their favorites and then there is the menu that is lovingly created by the owner, Steve, who is a remarkable chef and has an amazing talent and a deep love of french nuances (He's a James Beard chef!). Sit at the bar a few times and you'll see, from the friendly and discrete barkeeps why people come back.

The other reason people return is the food: The bar menu includes: omelettes, hamburgers (perfection), salmon/tuna burgers (perfection), salads (perfect dressing) and the fries. The fries are amazing. I cannot say anything more. The main menu is also quite stunning in its choices and simplicity. Steve's ability to capture the essence of the meat, fish, vegetables, soups and pastas speaks of a real talent. Don't let the "Village", relaxed feel fool you. There's very good eating at this restaurant. Check it out. Go and try something different ever visit. It's worth it.

My boyfriend and I went to this restaurant for the first time last night. As soon as I walked into the restaurant I felt like I was a long lost friend -- extremely comfortable. While I was waiting the bartender gave me an overview of the building's history which was fascinating.

I felt so at ease from the start which continued throughout the dinner with the help of our server's polished and courteous service. The chef (and owner) created a meal that I am still thinking about -- our meals were done to perfection. I wish I was returning to the restaurant tonight for another lovely experience.
I will definitely be a returning customer and plan on spreading 'the word' about this wonderful restaurant and the people that involved in creating a dining experience that is memorable.

Went to Village on Friday night with a party of 7. Food was delicious. I got the chicken and it was tasty and moist and pretty much just terrific. One of my friends had the duck which was also very good. The pre-fix menu is an easy choice for under 30 bucks. And to add a little gravy, the house wine is from a fabulous region in Italy and i couldn't even believe it was so inexpensive. Or that it was their house wine!! All in all great intimate dinner.,

I went for the prix-fixe brunch yesterday (Sunday). I was pleasantly surprised that there was a jazz duo (guitar and bass) playing. The selection is not extensive, but it's a pretty good deal, as it includes a cocktail, coffee or tea, soup or salad, a backet of muffins, and your entree. The main room is filled with sunlight and the space is very pretty. Service was attentive, although a little confused, and didn't rush us. I'd go back if I felt like having a nice, relaxed brunch.

My wife and I convinced Grandpa to watch our baby so we could have a date night. I decided to try a place we haven't been and picked Village Restaurant. I'm very glad I did! I had made reservations--good idea if you're dining there on a Saturday night--and we were warmly greeted and promptly seated. The restaurant was filled, and the crowd was lively. This led to my only "complaint", it was a bit noisy. Our service was fantastic, and the roasted chicken was perfect. The meat was moist, the skin crisp, and the seasonings balanced. We opted for the prix fixe dinner and believe we got a great bargain. We will definitely go back. I really want to try a Sunday brunch now.

I've been a devotee of this place for some time. They lost their groove, and are back on track. It's the same faces, but it seems as if all have a new attitude. I was never going to go back after all the changes, but the last two times have been so fresh they obviously cleaned house, and got rid of the mediocre.

Three of us went for a hungover, birthday brunch. We'd been talking about going here for some time, and decided to check it out. In fact, we tried to go last week, but they were closed for a private party. They gave us complimentary drink cards, which we unfortuantely forgot to bring.

It could not have been better.

I was craving oysters and got what I consider some of the best I've ever had (Flower Pine Island, if I recall correctly).

The service was good and the food was amazing. Eggs benedict was fantastic. A perfect brunch, topped off with some amazing, well spiced and delicious bloody marys.

The 6 drinks made up a good amount of the tab of $120 (incl. 20% tip). But, for the across the board amazing experience, it was worth every penny. WE"LL BE BACK!!!

Before we ordered I told my companion, everything I've had on this menu has been great. Then following her meal I ask, how everything was, and she said, "Better than I expected, this is really, really good." That kinda sums up my experiences here - it's always lived up to or surpassed my expectations. (The only bad thing the entire night, was that the bread served prior to the meal was a bit charred on the outside).

What a treat it is to find a wonderful new place to eat in NYC! Last night my parents and I went to Village Restaurant and we had a great night! Everything from the stylish NYC atmosphere, the friendly service and the delicious food made us wonder why we hadn't been here before! But we will be coming back! And easy on the pcket book too...a very resonable price rage with everything from tuna steak to burgers. A great deal for a NYC night on the town. Try the roasted chicken, best I've had in years!

This restaurant looks nice on the outside and inside, but the food was the worst I have had in NYC. Maybe it was just the dish I ordered, but the braised lamb was drenched in oil and almost inedible because it had no flavor. The diced vegetables in the dish were also swimming in oil and so blackened that I couldn't tell what they were, but they certainly didn't go well with lamb. Our waiter never gave us his full attention even though the restaurant was only half full. Furthermore, the warm chocolate cake dessert was really dry, which ended my extremely unsatisfying meal at the Village on an even more disappointing note. The 9.0+ rating is way off.

What a charming surprise! I got last minute reservations on a Saturday night due to a last minute cancellation?otherwise call ahead as this place is deservedly booked. I eat out a lot in Manhattan & I have to say that I had one of the best ever experiences with food & wait staff at Village. This is a place where you look around & everyone is happy to be there. The food is excellent, the wine list is varied with many decent bottles in the $30 range, the decor is relaxed & warm & I think you?d be hard pressed to find a better run restaurant in the West Village. Village is a great place to settle in & enjoy a long meal with good friends and a romantic place for a first date. I look forward to many return visits.

went to Village for a friend's birthday last weekend, and it was fantastic! the tuna tartare was ridiculously good, i didn't want it to end. I ordered the steak frites, and my friend had the lamb - nothing was dissapointing, everything was great! my steak was perfect and came in a huge portion, I barely finished half of it (probably because of all the tartare). the lamb was just as good, and we finished everything off with coffee creme brulee (soooo good) and yellow watermelon sorbet. staff was really friendly, overall fantastic experience. would definitely do it all over.

Went to Village last night for my birthday. We picked it randomly, without a recommendation from someone who has been there, so we weren't sure what to expect. We were very pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious (I had a halibut special, my husband had steak), and the service was top-notch. When my dessert came, there was a candle in it - not because anyone asked for one - but because the waiter must have seen me opening my birthday card and gift, and said he knew it was a special occassion of some sort. Truly the mark of an attentive waiter. I highly recommend the restaurant based on our experience last night.

Is how you correct your mistakes. We've had dozens of fine meals here. Two visits ago, a really, truly dreadful one. With bad attitude from the hostess as well. Next day, we called. THEY LISTENED. Begged us to come back. We did, and they comped us on the whole meal, every last drop of it. "you are good customers, you deserve better." And the hostess is no longer employed there. Mistakes happen. How you fix them is how you keep customers. We'll be back again.

Threw my fiance's surprise 30th birthday dinner here & couldn't be happier. After calling every restaurant in the West Village/Meatpacking district, found this restaurant. Shockingly easy to throw a group dinner here: simple contract, deposit only to hold the date & the entire 2nd fl mezz for our grp of 20. No $6,000 minimum or 'we'll have to split your group b/w 6 tables.' And at 8:30p on a Fri! Excellent meal, service (very accommodating) & ambience - I highly recommend this & I'm VERY picky!

This is a true gem of the village. Super friendly and knowledgable staff, fabulous bistro fare and a wonderful jazz brunch with great live jazz (the chilaquiles were awesome! - i asked for them spicy and they were delicious). Our waiter and all of the people helping him were attentive and genuine. They even sent us a dessert on the house because they thought we would like it (and it was amazing-panna cotta!!!-so very yummy). If you want a casual neighborhood bistro that has great food and excellent service, this is the place.

One of the worst brunch experiences I've ever had. The menu was pitiful. We were seated for at least 20 minutes before we could flag down someone to take our order. We ended up giving our order to the hostess, who was slightly testy. It was also a battle to get our checks. The diners next to us commserated with us about the "absentee" servers, so at least we weren't the only diners to be ignored. The food is decent, but it's overpriced. It's too bad, because the restaurant is beautiful and i live in the neighborhood, but I've sworn off this place.

We dined here because we were looking for a restaurant where we could have a nice meal on a Saturday evening with a 2-year old in tow. This turned out to be the perfect place. The service was great and the staff was very helpful in offering us a couple of seating options to accomodate our son. The food was excellent. I had the butternut squash ravioli and was surprised at the subtle and delicious combination of flavors. I've had the dish at other restaurants but this was the best. My companions' meals were also very good, including my son's who ordered from the children's menu and finished with a truly scrumptious ice cream sundae. The restaurant has a simple brasserie decor, is low-lit and is not loud at all so you can actually have a conversation while dining.

I went to Village with a large group of people, not expecting much. However, four bottles of wine and an unforgettable seared tuna later, I would almost promise to come back. Our server was humorous, chatty, and had a great sense of humor. There was not a morsel of food left on anyone's plate. And even the desserts were delicious. Although the restaurant is a bit too big to be considered cozy, it does have a nice, homey feel to it. I would definitely recommend Village--especially with a big group!

Village is one of those places that scores on all fronts. The staff is accomodating, the ambiance is exciting and yet relaxed, and the food is out of this world! We've been following chef Lyle's food around New York for 15 years and while remaining classic, his innovations with bistro fare have made us return and return. If it's just a quick martini at the bar (which I recommend Jeffery's) or a mind blowing Roast Chicken, go to Village!

I think the Village has a nice space and I heard many good reviews about this restaurant at the "Village". However, the food was so-so (not enough favor), overpriced and the biggest disappointment was the service, pretty horrible in my opinion.

Pros: Space, French, Not to crowded

Cons: Overpriced, Horrible Service, Weak Sauce

I started coming here a few months ago because it's close to home. At first it was the great burgers, but then it became something more. It's a rare West Village place that is there for the people that live in the hood, rather than just there to make money off of the people in the hood. (I've met the owner, Stephan Lyle and he does live in Tribeca.) The customers and the staff all seem to believe in this place. The food is good, not amazing. But it is definately never bad and always accomadating. The staff is friendly (the reason I'm writing this!) and versed in the menu. It's a great hangout, that also offers a little bit more when you want it, but never makes you feel like you have to have it.

Nice decor.
Service was so-so.
(Sometimes I wish mgmt would make the water boys into waiters, they always care more!)
Need more choices on the menu.
Steak was fairly good.
I could see this place appealing to tourists.

The food here was pretty good - the menu was varied enough that no one had any trouble finding something they liked. That said, the portions were pretty small while the prices were a little steep. Service was ok, but the food runners kept bringing the wrong dishes to the wrong seats and not seeming to understand that they had screwed up the table arrangement.

I do not agree with the previous couple of reviewers who had such a great time - because my wife and I were quite disappointed by the food and service. My tuna tatare was laden with salt and soy sauce - tasted like cheap chinese instead of great fish. My chicken was dry and the waitstaff was unattentive. Nice place for a drink, but that's about it.

this west village locale, looks like a place to be seen, fancy bar, bistro style and one would expect the food to be quite average. Au contraire! excellent food, fresh fish for those fish lovers, unique salads, appetizers and great desserts! definitely a treat!

the secret is finally out this is where greenwich village comes to eat. Stephen Lyle formely of The Odeon in tribeca has once again sucked us into his living room, "help!, i may never leave." Every night he offers us a tour of exceptionaly fresh food cooked to perfection from his favorite spots around the world. This is the man who invented comfort food. P.S. A little secret; Every thursday night Stephen and some of his cronies throw a great party!! dj, great food, beautiful neighborhood people and it rocks till well past 4 am!!!

Went to The Village for dinner the other night and had the most incredible steak! I honestly cannot remember the last time I had one that tender and juicy. The oysters were superb.....no sand at all, and if I had enough of an appetite left, I'm sure the desserts would have been awesome too! I highly recommend you give this great restaurant a try. Trust me, you'll go back!

I can't tell you how many times I have eaten here and I plan on coming back again and again. I have never had a meal I didn't enjoy and I have highly recommended most everything to my friends and fellow diners. The lamb, tuna, the mussels (a meal in themselves) and most importantly, the bread, are highlights. . .and the wine list satisfies most every tastebud and wallet. And don't forget about brunch. . .Jared makes a killer Bloody Mary and Jeffrey's Apple Martini's can't be beat. Kudos to Steve and Alex for a wondering dining experience.

I love Village! It's the perfect place for an upscale casual dinner-- the menu ranges from delicious hamburgers to excellent fish. Service is relaxed but attentive, and the atmosphere is always pleasant. Great brunch on weekends too!
