This is a real story with a very real little shih tzu named Molly who was plagued with countless health problems since the day I took her home. In retrospect, and now having been a very experienced dog owner, I suspect that Molly probably came from a puppy mill. With all her health problems she never complained, and I vowed never to give up on her and to give her the best life possible while she was in my care here on Earth.

When I first brought Molly in to ACA, Ming immediately became genuinely concerned about the condition of Molly's skin, ears, and inflamed paws. She asked where I had gone and who had I seen. The regular vet and the ""specialist"" had done very little to help Molly's condition which continued to escalate. Ming referred me to Dr. Heather Peikes, a TRUE specialist and someone who would change both my and Molly's life in the best way possible. Ming helped save Molly's life and I will always be grateful and loyal to her for that reason. From that day on, Ming and Jose ( her loving groomer) would become actively involved in Molly's well being and care. Along with Dr. Peikes, all of us would communicate as to what treatments were working and which were not. Molly had to be handled incredibly gently and needed special shampooing and conditioning that had more than the usual stages. Her ears needed more protection and attention while bathing. Special solution had to be put in her ears following the bath to help with the ear infections. It was a very involved process that Ming, Jose and the entire staff at ACA would do for many years to come. They never saw Molly as a burden or charged me more for all the extra attention Molly needed. In fact, it was quite the opposite. Everyone loved Molly and were always happy to see her. They cared for her as if she were their own. They would call and check in with me after important appointments and surgeries through the years- always wanting updates on Molly and her health.

Molly went from hating groomers from her previous experiences to prancing right in to ACA for her day of beauty. Jose was always so patient with me and Molly in getting her pony tails exactly right and for Molly to stay still. Yes dogs move around and fidget and unfortunately get nicked some times while being groomed. No one at ACA would EVER mishandle an animal there intentionally. If for any reason something small like that did happen the staff would always be upfront about it when returning the animal to the parent. They have nothing to hide which is why the salon is behind a glass partition for all to see what great work they do. If there is something you don't like...no problem- they fix it until they get it right and everyone is happy. Free brushings in between grooming appointments for the health of the animal- who does that?? Ming does, because that is what is best for the pet. Ming and her staff TRULY care about the animals and that is all a loving parent could ask for when leaving their loved one in another person's care. Go there and see for yourself.

My dear little Molly passed away this past spring after post -op complications. When the difficult decision had to be made, Molly and I said our goodbye's to those closest to her and she went one last time to get her hair done. I bathed her at home and held her as Jose groomed her before she went to Heaven. That day there was much emotion, support, I'm sorry's, and tearful goodbye's at ACA and Dr. Peikes' office. Molly's life would have been a very different story if it wasn't for them. It is no surprise that other than my family, the people that checked in with me the most after Molly passed were Dr. Peikes and Jose. So..now you know the kind of person Ming and Jose and the people at ACA are like and how the business is run. It is a rare and beautiful slice of NYC life that Molly and I were so happy to be a part of for so many years.

Rest in Peace My Dear Little Molly. We all miss you.

I just read the reviews on this page and I'm not sure how I hadn't heard about this place before. I really wish someone had told me. The local vet offices should warn new dog owners not to bring their pets here. I love my dog so much and I feel like such a horrible person for having put her through torture. I'm not sure which groomer ended up taking care of my dog, but she came home with nicks and cuts and she's been under the dining room table shaking for days. Literally, I have to crawl under there to get her and take her outside so she can relieve herself. This is NOT the dog I knew before we walked into that place. I called the place to try to find out what happened and they treated me horribly. It was the most unprofessional, most INHUMAN conversation I've ever experienced. They interrupted me, got defensive, told me I was lying and then hung up on me. I am floored. FYI, during the phone call I told them that I was going to post bad reviews about them if they didn't start treating me with some decency and they said they would sue me. I see that they regularly monitor this site and defend themselves every time someone posts yet another horror story. These stories can't ALL be lies. There are so many of them. Most have to be true. How can people keep bringing their dogs there? I told my friend's dog walker about them and she already knew. I wish I had spoken to this dog walker before I ever walked in there. I dont know if this place is a scam/rip-off or if they genuinely get off on hurting animals but they ned to be shut down. Thank you for reading this. I knew it would be wrong of me not to share this with others.

I posted this same review on yelp, but feel it is important to post this review.

first, i'm wary of some of the highly rated comments for this business - make sure you feel confident they are not written by the business owners themselves. here's my story:

I don't know what happened to my dog while he was there, but when he came home, he was super anxious and would pee whenever i came near him. he would hide whenever he thought i would pick him up. and whenever i said ""no"", he would begin shaking like crazy.

my dog has always been strong and vibrant and so to see him acting like this - vulnerable and broken made me so sad. i don't know what happened to him while he was there but it's clear that someone seriously scared him.

the head groomer was nice, but the receptionist was really obnoxious. she seemed annoyed i had specific instructions for my dog's cut. at $90 a cut, i don't mind being specific.

i won't take my dog back. if you see your once confident and happy dog cowering away from you in fear ... something went wrong. it's been two days since he's been there - hopefully he'll heal and go back to normal.

Our vet recommended A Cut Above to us because he said that Ming would be very gentle with our 9 year old dog. We were extremely delighted with the results. I'm pretty particular about how my bichon frise is groomed. Not only does our dog look fabulous, he seems so relaxed and comfortable when we drop him off. This is such a wonderful place to bring your pet and I have recommended it to my best friends. They were extremely satisfied as well, and they are pretty tough customers to please. One more thing to mention: everyone comments about how beautiful our dog looks when we walk him. I wouldn't trust anyone but A Cut Above with our bichon!!

Bush league--at best. Sloppy, inconsistent work and revolving-door employee changes. The end for me was seeing my tiny dog tethered to a grooming table and being tormented by the very large, free-running dog of one of the employees (it was ""bring your dog to work day""). Yikes! \r

One big over-rated rip-off. My dog had an 8 am appointment. At 2 pm, after spending 3 hours being de-matted, a painful process, he was finally able to be picked up. I was never called and asked permission. Cost- $125. His skin was so irritated, he has been on antibiotics for a week. Cost of vet- $200. A big fat waste of money and a bad job as well. I actually ran into a woman and dog who was just there-her dog's tail was mangled.

My Broadway Joey, a 31/2 year old Yorkshire Terrier has been taken care of by Ming and her loving staff since he was a puppy. People stop me on the street all the time asking where JoeJoe got his amazingly stylish haircut!
Ming knows every dog that comes to A Cut Above and they have just opened a new salon on 69th Street that looks like a spa. This is a very classy place with very competitive prices. A Cut Above should be your first choice!

I have used this grooming shop since 1993 starting at their 75th Street location. Over the years I have tried others closer to me but kept returning to this shop. I love the way they style and their hair cutting is beautiful!
Since 2001 I have taken my dogs to Ming and her staff of very nice people exclusively. I feel totally comfortable there and they really care and are very knowledgeable about dogs. My 17 year old Bichon Frise passed away in 2009 unfortunately, he started there in '93. My 11 year old Bichon still goes there regularly. I love the free brush- outs between grooming.
It's not so easy to get a member of this breed totally clear of knots on your own unless you are a grooming professional. A Cut Above really takes care of that well!
It is also a question of health, you have to keep the coats fresh to keep these dogs from getting skin problems. They can't be bathed too many times at home without being brushed first! That's why I always go running over to the salon
instead to keep them looking fabulous!
Nothing beats the exquisite look of a freshly groomed Bichon. The quality of their work brings a lot of compliments everywhere we go!

I am so happy to have found this Grooming Salon through my puppy's wonderful trainer. My puppy loves going there and when I pick him up, people stop us as he looks so much like a show dog. Ming and her crew respects the integrity of the breed and the look, and my needs. We travel from Astoria to the UWS but everytime, it is so worth the trip.
Thank you for being so great at what you do.

My poor baby left ""A Cut Above"" needing stitches today :( I had to bring my little pomeranian boy in to have his hair evened out after wearing a cone and a cast for 8 weeks. I called in advance to explain that he was healing from a broken leg, I specifically asked and waited for a date and time when their ""most experienced"" groomer would be available... Well I got there and my dog was trembling and holding his leg to his side. They said he was ""compensating"" from the break, as it turns out, he was holding his cut together the whole time! So I had to walk my bleeding dog up the street to the vet to find out that he needs stitches! And another cone for 2 weeks. Worse still, he can't walk for 2 weeks. Our surgeon specifically said we need to walk him twice a day for 15 minutes in order to help rebuild his strength in the broken leg. So now his rehabilitation will be interrupted. Their error is far bigger than I could have imagined. They gave me what seemed to be the least experienced groomer in the whole place. He needed help cutting my dogs hair right before my eyes (as I waited), because he couldn't figure out how to get the fur even. It's a terrible haircut to boot! So now, I'm waiting for my little guy to get his stitches and I'll be able to bring him home 6 hrs after my appt ended, only to visit their vet again 2 weeks later to have the stitches removed! I also had a much anticipated date tonight with my Husband, which obviously had to be cancelled, that's not a big deal, but it's sad. Oh I forgot the BEST part! The groomer wiped my dog's wound with a dirty towel from the hamper! The more I type the more furious I get, but I do feel a responsibility to share my experience. I will never bring my healthy dogs here again, and certainly would not even fathom the idea of bringing a dog with special needs here! I let them keep my 20 percent tip, because I'm not cruel, and I'm sure some of them know what they are doing. But the bottom line is, they don't care about your special needs. They didn't make a note of my requests or concerns and now they're paying the price for medical bills and a refund of the service. What I can't get back is our time, and my poor dog's rehabilitation will now be on hold unnecessarily. People make mistakes, but I'm saddened I wasn't taken more seriously, and my heart is breaking for my little innocent dog with no voice :(

Pros: receptionist is nice

Cons: attention to detail, knowledge, expertise.

I cannot say enough good things about this place. I had my Westie, Duffy, groomed here for five years and I didn't have a single complaint about their service. My dog has passed away recently because of cancer so I'm writing this review to express my appreciation to A Cut Above and its staff for taking good care of her every time she came in to be groomed. Duffy didn't like being bathed, so I don't know what it was exactly, but Duffy acted like a kid in a candy store every single time I took her in for grooming here. I could venture a guess though that it was the friendly proprietor Ming Liddle and her competent and friendly staff that made my dog feel right at home. She absolutely loved going here. As for me, having a Westie with an off-white fur meant that any slight dirt would easily be obvious so when my dog always came out looking very clean, happy and well-groomed, I was happy and satisfied. A Cut Above always gave Duffy the perfect haircut appropriate for her breed. She would always get compliments after a visit to A Cut Above.

They now have two locations on the upper west side - one on 83rd St. and the more recently opened one on 69th St. just off Broadway (which has now been around for a couple of years). I used to trek to their 83rd St. location just to have Duffy groomed despite the abundance of other dog grooming salons within a few blocks of my apartment so I was glad when they also opened on 69th St. I can say that both locations are staffed with excellent groomers who know what they are doing and are very friendly with the pets. In addition, they keep the place clean and well-maintained.

On the days when I brought her in, I had no problem leaving Duffy alone here to be groomed while I ran my errands for the day. They always had her ready at the appointed time for pick up and when she was ready ahead of time, they would give me a call just to let me know. There is also the option of just waiting around and, for those who like to keep an eye on their pets, the grooming area is easily visible from the waiting area and you can watch the whole process. This is an excellent place all in all, with great personalized service, and I would recommend this to all pet owners.

Pros: Knowledgeable and very friendly staff

I have been taking my cocker spaniel Pigeon to A Cut Above Grooming Salon for several years on a regular basis and it has always been an exceptionally pleasant experience. Diana at the front desk is exceedingly pleasant and professional. They call me if Pigeon is finished early. And, best of all, Pigeon looks fantastic when I pick her up. I moved about a year ago and tried another groomer . . . with an unfortunately poor outcome. That experience taught me just how wonderful A Cut Above is, and now I make the extra trip to take Pigeon back to where I *know* she will be treated kindly and receive a great grooming.

It is my great pleasure to write of my, nearly 15 year, professional relationship with the Cut Above Grooming Salon on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.\r
\r
The individual care and personal attention given to my Bichon Frise, Angelo, and Maltese, Valentina, have been extraordinary, not to mention the sheer beauty of their coats, faces, paws, and tails with their unmistakable Cut Above style after grooming.\r
Ming Liddle and her staff, have cultivated a true institution on the West Side, where neighbors, passersby, and fellow dog owners, would ask as youd leave the salon with your coiffed mans best friend, How gorgeous your dog looks! Where did you take him or her? With such pride, Id boast Cut Above! Id always say, just tell them Angelo sent you!\r
\r
At a time while Angelo, my Bichon, had a very serious spinal chord injury, the sensitivity and knowledge of how to care for him in his recovery, from Ming and Jose, were irreplaceable! \r
\r
Ming Liddles instincts and communication with these animals is something to behold. They follow her like sheep to a shepherd, and everyone feels confident to leave their pet(s) for the day, looking forward to seeing them feeling and looking so great after their day at the spa! \r
\r
So often Ming would stage beautiful photos after the grooming, and I particularly treasure my photo of Angelo and Teen-Teen (as Ming named her) sleeping peacefully together on their green bed in the salon! \r

Sincerely, \r

Pros: Best In Show in the Pet Styling Business

I have been going to A Cut Above on the Upper West Side for almost 15 years, with two Samoyeds, first Sascha and now Rascal - both rescues, both wonderful dogs. The staff has always been terrific with the dogs - Sascha lived to 13, Rascal is now almost 15.The staff is particularly good with this breed. There aren't many Sammies in NY, yet they know exactly how the breed should be groomed . \r
I have never failed to get at least a dozen compliments while walking my Sammies back home after their day of beauty. They look maahvelous. Even more important, the staff is kind, gentle and thorough. I have many times come early to pick up the dogs and my dogs have always been happy campers getting all the love and attention.

Pros: Service and expertise

I moved into the UWS back in 1993 and started taking my then 3 year old Samoyed to A Cut Above. They do THE best job I've seen for Samoyeds... trim the hocks, nicely trimmed paws, and remove all undercoat (which is not an easy job at all - but they patiently work at it!!). In fact when I moved back to Queens in 1995 I've tried several other groomers and no one would do as good a job. They would not be thorough. I would always get my dog back w/ no undercoat removed and their skin couldn't breath. This prompted me to drive my dog into NYC from Queens to A Cut above because I could not find any groomers who would do a good job. Back then Ming (the owner) offered for me to drop Nikko of in the AM and pick him up in the PM when I would go back to queens. I now live in the city for the last 5 years, so its easy again thank goodness. They always offer free brush outs as well. I am now on my second Samoyed Padi who is 12 now. They take extra care with her, and always did w/ Nikko too when he got old and his back legs were giving out, to give breaks. When Nikko was incontinent, Ming would suggest what we could do to help him out w/ an underbelly clip. I walk down the street after Padi is groomed and people complement how great she looks EVERY TIME. Padi is ALWAYS loose in the grooming area, she is very social w/ other dogs - large and small, many Sammies are not. If she weren't I wouldn't even want her loose and risk her hurting another dog. However A Cut Above has always used good judgement - with my Nikko too. In all these years my dogs never came back injured. Rescues are special cases sometimes, and need to be handled with care. Padi is a rescue too and she is a bit neurotic. But I've no complaints on how the groomers have treated her she comes back happy. This place is professional and many of their staff such as Jose, I have known for all these years as well. I trust they handled this situation below correctly. Without knowing a full picture it is hard to comment but its also unfair to slander someone's livelihood due to a possible misunderstanding. Stores come and go in the UWS, leases get expensive - this business has been around for a long time - that should say something. I have been a customer now for 17 years consistently and will continue to be a loyal customer. Thanks A Cut Above for the excellent care and grooming of my dogs!

On April 6, 2010, Genoveve Down posted a negative review claiming an injury to her Bichon to which I offered (below) to reimburse her for vet expenses. Ms. Downs lack of response to my offer, and the absence of any record of such an injury in either of our salons, confirm my belief that this was a non-existing customer making an untrue review. Equally untrue were three other recent reviews, all sent by a single person using three different names. As the owner of A Cut Above, and in behalf of my talented staff, it is time that I speak out against this mean-spirited defamation barrage. A Cut Above has built a strong reputation over 19 years by standing behind our service and by providing exceptional grooming, reasons that we are now trusted to groom second and third generation pets for many clients. All of our grooming is done in full sight of pet owners, we have detailed grooming/personal/health notes for all pets, we provide free in-between-grooming brush-outs, we video record all activity for quality control purposes, we take care of vet bills for injuries vets confirm we caused and we do not cage pets when owners ask they be left out and when safety permits. Most veterinarians in the area know us to be an unusually conscientious salon that stands behind our work and that we demonstrate in practice that we genuinely care for the safety and health of pets we groom. Having said this, I urge anyone who ever has a genuine issue to contact me personally so I can immediately attend to it. As always, it is my goal to maintain the highest standards possible. You can call me at 212 877-7778. Thank you. Ming Liddle\r

Man I wish I'd taken a look at these reviews before I tried this place. I don't normally get my dog a gooming, I just give him a bath, so I have no basis of comparison. However, I can't believe how rude the guy was to me. It was really expensive so I was surprised that the groomer was so grumpy. I think they should be nicer. Maybe all the groomers are like that but if not this place should be more professional. I didn't know what kind of instructions to give, and the guy had absolutely no patience for me. I tried to explain what my dog needed and I guess it was taking too long because the guy told me they were too busy to do any ""re-do's"". I never asked for a re-do, I just asked for the first groom job and he still had to be huffy. I didn't know you are supposed to tip these guys.it really never occurred to me. But honestly i wouldn't tip a waiter who treated me like garbage so why tip a dog groomer like that? Anyway, this guy actually got all mad and asked me for a tip when I picked up my dog again. Anyway, that's New York I guess! I didn't feel like getting into it with him so I decided to just post here.

Totally hilarious drama below and who are these people? But have to chime in....we're not going back. I have a bijon and she got a big ole cut on her back. My dog walker told me not to go there so I should have listened. Not sure why it should be such a big deal there are like three other places about a block away.

After I got my first baby Pomeranian Rubix, I searched for a groomer salon who would take very good care of him. A Cut Above came highly recommended. I was very pleased with the service. Not only did Rubix come out very well groomed he was also treated with best care. We all know Poms can be stubborn but the staff at this place are great! They know how to handle him. Now his sister, Stormie is enjoying the same service as well. \r

I will never return and would not send my worst enemy to A CUT ABOVE. My dog is a rescue who spent 2 years in a tiny cage, never let out for exercise or human contact. Because of this she is terrified of being caged, A CUT ABOVE promised to groom my dogs without caging them and then the staff completely ignored this request. I returned to see them take my shaking, cowering, terrified dog out of a cage. When I complained they refused to contact the owner or manager and refused to give me back my pets until I paid. I took my dogs home and called the owner/manager (not sure which) and boy did she give me an earful. Through repeated attempts to come to a resolution with her over the charges she consistently berated me and in my opinion treated me worse than most people treat...well, their dogs! She hung up the phone and yelled. I disputed the charges with Amex and on her sworn statement to them it is clear to me from my point of view that SHE LIED about what happened and attested to events she was NOT EVEN PRESENT FOR. I believe that this place is completely unprofessional and certainly unfit to handle people's beloved pets. Steer Clear!

Ms. Liddle's comments below are entirely off-base. She continues to lie and even contradicts herself in each communication. What could have been a simple matter has been blown out of proportion and is doing more damage to her business than a partial refund of a $174 charge could ever do. Truth be told, I would have been more than happy with a simple apology. My dog was a mess for about 3 days but now she only shakes and tucks her tale when we walk by 83rd street.

I could debate this merchant's post point by point, but rather I will simply point out that American Express' Consumer Advocacy department is now investigating A CUT ABOVE and the charge to my account has been suspended. No dissatisfied customer should be told that they must pay a fee if they want their dogs returned to them.

Ming should not be communicating with me at all since she threatened me in writing via certified letter not to contact her. I would never do something like that to a simple disgruntled customer, but that was her choice. Therefore I am surprised that she finds it acceptable to speak to me directly on this site after making such threats.

The bottom line here is that we all want what is best for our pets and beyond that we all want to be treated with professionalism and courtesy. When we are not (and when our pets are harmed), we don't want to pay money for the privilege. I think we can all agree that these simple expectations are more than reasonable.
And if you agree and expect the same for yourself and your pet, my best advice to you is not to go to A CUT ABOVE.

Ming works at listening to what the client wants and is wonderful to my three pups. She has knowledge of breeds and is willing to work on any age pup. The 69th street store is my favorite because of the windows and the short stairs to go down to the shop.

She is careful about selecting who works for her, and their professionalism and love of my pack show.

The groomers at A Cut Above clearly love dogs, and treat them with loving care, respect, and attention. Everything is visible, so you know they are confident about what they do. Ming is lovely and makes a point of getting to know her canine *and* human clientele. And the free brush-out service in between cuts is an added bonus that builds cutomer loyalty and dog happiness.

When we first got our Tibetan Terrier, Oscar we called a local groomer in Westchester and asked if they had experience with the breed. They said they did so we expected good results. Boy were we wrong! After asking a tibetan terrier breeder in NJ and another fellow TT owner where they recommend, both said, A Cut Above. One trip and we were hooked!! They do such an excellent job, we travel from Westchester to their 83rd street location.\r
\r
As other reviews have mentioned, the dogs are never stressed and always come out perfect. You can really tell how much Ming and the rest of her staff care for the dogs. Oscar is always so excited to see Diana when he walks in. \r

When I got there at 8:30, Jose helped me. He was quite informative and seemed to care about my dog, Dharma, and her needs. He was very focused.

Adrian did the brush out and drying. He was careful and kind to my dog, which is important to me. I'll definitely use him again.

Nestor did the haircut. He was excellent. Truly a perfectionist and kind as well. I'll definitely use him again.

While I was there, Ming, the owner came in. She couldn't have been more gracious and we talked about her staff. Obviously she cares about her clients and seems to care about her staff too. She must treat them well, since most have been working there for years.

Dharma looks great and all treated her very well.

Thanks again!

Warmest, Jane & Dharma

While I was there, Ming, the owner came in. She couldn't have been more gracious and we talked about her staff. Obviously she cares about her clients and seems to care about her staff too. She must treat them well, since most have been working there for years.

Dharma looks great and all treated her very well.

Thanks again!

Warmest, Jane & Dharma

Pros: Great staff. They're professional and very focused.

Cons: Haven't noticed any cons yet.

we took our maltipoo there this week for the first time. we had him groomed by others at other places and we were very unhappy each time. well, a cut above is now our place. he looks wonderful, and most of all he seems much more comfortable since his grooming. thank you to the staff, we will be back.

Your new 69th Street location, spotlessly clean, open and bright, with full vision of pets and groomers through a clear glass wall make the visit a treat for pets and their owners. Meticulous grooming and loving attention remains a constant.

Thank you Ming and Jamie

Pros: The best grooming salon in town.

just got back from snickers (cockapoo) for hair cut...couldn't be happier--we've followed a cut above from w. 83rd to w. 69th street which is closer to home . Service, enviornment caring, and grooming couldn't be better..best of all the groomers listen to your concerns and truly follow thru. -never been disappointed with snicky's cut... they give him puppy cut which looks great!!! Also from what I hear while checking in, is that they very good with difficult dogs--wish I could find a hair stylist without issues

I've been going to ""A Cut Above"" for approimately 11 years.\r
\r
My dog acts as if she is going to be torturned near water. I've given up bathing her since this usually loving dog turns into a cat who scratches in the bathtub.\r
\r
Ming and the groomers tell me she's fine with them. I do know Ming is very gentle and kind with her, and Nellie, my dog, generally stops trembling when Ming picks her up. \r
\r
The establishment does excellent work every time. One time, I couldn't get over there by closing, and Ming dropped off the dog to me at my home, offering with quiet graciousness, and certainly going out of her way for me. It was really appreciated.\r
\r
My dog, a Bishon, is a sweetie, but also ""very"" sensitive and reactive. She leaves there in a great mood each time, and loves the attention people give her afterwards.\r
\r
Need I say more? I'd recommend this establishment without reservation.\r

Pros: Dogs are treated with gentleness and humanity

.

A cut above has been the most consistent and professional grooming salon I've ever been to. They do exactly what I ask for, will make suggestions for improvement, are quite nice and you can see it all happening in their open glass space so there are no secrets or worries about your pet. The salon owner Ming is totally accountable to all. They also just opened a 2nd salon in the upper 60's on the west side since they are so appreciated by their customers. I've been bringing my Shitzu (puppy cut) for 6 years and have been satisfied every time!

Pros: Treat dogs with respect and carefully

Cons: none that I've experienced

I've known Ming for 17 plus years. Her caring is so evident by the fact that my 4 dogs can't wait to get through that glass door. Her staff's ability to style so many different breeds is amazing. No matter what my pet's issues were, the staff always made sure they remained stress free and when they became senior citizens the caring and respect was heartfelt. The fact that you watch everything through the glass window is such a comfort. I don't know what I would do if I moved out of state....I will never give my pet to a groomer who takes them to that ""hidden place"". Also, how many shops offer free brushouts between cuts...none that I know of. Ming offers that service so your pet can continue to look great and remain mat free. As I said
""the only place in town"". Also, her new location gets the same review....great!

Pros: Caring, respectful, extensive knowlege

Cons: NONE and I've been a client since 1991

.

I've been bringing my dogs here ever since i got them. Courteous personnel, clean and well-equipped facility (they actually opened the second venue several blocks away), glass walls allowing you to see what's going on inside, computer files of all the clients dogs, so that they can see special requirements from the owner, or refer to what the cut was last time you came; all-day service (you bring the dog in the morning and pick up before they close @6) - very convenient for 9-to-5ers.
They also clean ears, do a n a l glands and cut nails if there is a need for that. I don't know many salons who do a n a l s, so it's very important because this way you don't need to take your dog for a pricey vet visit (the extraction alone at vet's will cost you the same as the cut!)

Cons: a little pricier than the rest, but not dramatically

I have an old quirky mini poodle who gets very unsettled when he is away from home. ACB has been very helpful both in identifying this (until now) unknown trait and finding ways to make the dog as comfortable and calm as possible when he comes in for grooming-- be it having him come in very early/late so that he can be groomed when the salon is quiet to not force drying him and putting cotton in his ears so he isn't bothered by all the noise. They really go out of their way to take care of him...and he always looks amazing, to boot.

In the interests of truth in advertising, as it were, I've never taken my dogs anywhere else; and anyone can have a bad day.\r
\r
That said, Ming and her staff are terrific. When I brought my first Portuguese Water Dog to them, the breed was still pretty rare in the city, and I'd been warned that most groomers had no idea how to shape them. A Cut Above did a great job, adapting the Porty standard to my tastes. They also put up with him! A non-stop barker in the crate, they let him wander around and even hang out behind the desk. During the last years of his life, when he was very ill and lost much of his coat, making his skin very fragile, they handled him with enormous gentleness and care.\r
\r
A small poodle belonging to friends of mine had always been shaved by groomers, because of terrible mats. Needless to say, he was not a thing of beauty. Ming's staff patiently combed out the mats (yes, it's costly; yes, it's worth it) -- the dog looked sensational! They've never gone anywhere else since then.\r
\r
Now I'm taking my 7-month-old puppy to A Cut Above. Every dog owner I've seen since his recent grooming has asked where I take him. And there's no question that he's well-treated: he greets everyone at A Cut Above as a long-lost friend.\r
\r
There may be groomers that charge less. There are certainly groomers closer to me (I'm about 50 blocks away). But I would never even consider taking my dog anywhere else.

They purchased items with me in mind. I would highly recommend this for your pet. I have used them since I purchased my dog in January. They helped recommend food, flea medications and administered them as well no charge.

I have been taking my dogs to Cut Above for years now and highly recommend the establishment. Staff is professional, courteous, and talented. In addition, they are caring. One of my dogs had been ill for many years and was ""cranky"" most of the time, but he loved coming to Cut Above, as do all of my dogs. As soon as we approach the Cut Above door, tails wag, leashes are pulled to their max, and yelps of joy are heard. Don't bother going to any other groomer. Cut Above is the one!!!

I have been taking my four dogs to A Cut Above for more than ten years and have never had anything less than a perfect experience. They are so careful with each dog that I even trusted them to groom my elderly Yorkie (19 when she passed) although she had congestive heart and chronic kidney failure -- conditions which might preclude other groomers from accepting a dog. Another dog of mine, a skittish rescue when I brought him for the first time, has a complete personality change when he arrives at A Cut Above and becomes mellow and friendly to the other dogs (not the case elsewhere) . I can only attribute this to the zen-like sense of calm that permeates the environment there. He drags me down the block when we are close to 83rd & CPW because he is so excited to arrive!\r
A Cut Above give equal attention to both pedigreed and mixed breed dogs; and the proprietor, Ming (a devoted multiple dog-owner herself), always goes the extra mile to accomodate her customers -- whether it be staying late for a pick up or handling a specific request.\r
Five stars is insufficient for the exceptional service provided by Ming and her nurturing staff.

I have been taking my cocker in to Cut Above for several years after unsatisfactory experiences with other groomers. Dylan came to us with many problems typical of some cockers such as fear aggression, and I was very reluctant to have him groomed when we first got him because I was afraid he'd bite the groomer. A couple of places we went had young pleasant groomers but he came out half done because they made each other nervous and they didn't finish him. One groomer started out great but eventually they thought they needed one person to hold him for dear life while the other clipped him. I witnessed this and it was unbelievably stressful. They actually called to tell me not to bring him back before our last appointment.\r
\r
Many of the people I saw walking well groomed dogs in the neighborhood told me they had been going to Cut Above for years, including a couple of cockers. The first time I took Dylan there it was like a cocker convention. The groomers at Cut Above have never had a problem with Dylan. It is like watching The Dog Whisperer through their picture window. Instead of watching a scared groomer and a scared dog as I had before, I saw a more compliant happy Dylan than I ever thought possible. \r
\r
If I had known how much grooming a cocker needs before I got one I would have thought twice. And having to go through several bad (and expensive) experiences before I discovered Cut Above was not fun. The owner is an excellent business woman, trainer of grooming and dog person. On any given day there may be 20 dogs in various stages of grooming and I have almost never seen one on a table that seemed stressed. \r
\r
In fact, we're going back tomorrow.

I had been disappointed by the way other groomers treated my blind Maltese. But when I called and spoke with Ming and explained my dog's handicap, she was warm and understanding and immediately said I could wait while my dog was groomed. \r
\r
At first I was a little apprehensive since the place reminded me of a factory -- two large rooms closed off by glass -- with groomers in one room and dryers/fluffers in another room. But after staying and watching my dog be treated so well, I was hooked. I talked with the many other friendly pet owners as some of them waited too. They had been clients for years and only had wonderful things to say about Ming and her employees. Most of them had been with here for years.\r
\r
I HIGHLY recommend A Cut Above!

I took my cocker spaniel to A Cute Above in the Fall 2002 after a year to trying various groomer's throughout NY and having my baby come home with razor tracks, ear infections and traumatization. When I walked into A Cut Above, what won me over initially was the glass window that allows you to watch the pets receiving cuts. The interaction between the pets and the groomers was astonishing. When I picked my cocker up he was clean, smelled wonderful but most importanly he was calm. It was our first time there and Ming was very friendly addressing us both by our names which was an indication that she understood and appreciated the relationship we have with our pets. 5 years later, we are still clients who travel from one of the outer boroughs. She takes care of him noticing when he is gaining a few pounds (and suggesting a little more excercise and a little less food) or when he needs a deep conditioner at the end of a particularly rough winter. She even caters to his separation angxiety. I am greatful to have found this wonderful place and would be hard press to find the same quailty of care presently received at A Cut Above anywhere else.
