They got me in fast and got me my new glasses just as fast. The staff was super nice and set me up with the most absolutely great glasses I've ever purchased I think they are under new management because I had an excellent experience.

This place was terrible 15 years ago when I had a bad experience with the owner -- very dishonest and greedy.
Interesting to see that they are still getting negative reviews. Shop elsewhere, or shop for styles there, and then buy online at

My family has been going to Eye Shoppe on 7th for years. The staff and owners are very knowledgeable and the selection is excellent. This shop is overall so much better than all the chains opening up in PS lately like Cohen's Fashion Optical and Pearle Vision. I have never had a bad experience here, or been overcharged. Glasses are expensive, plain and simple. If you want cheap, go somewhere else. I highly recommend this independent business.

I am amazed at the terrible reviews. About 5 years ago I went looking for a new pair of glasses. As a designer, I am very very picky, especially about something that is going to sit on my face! I went to at least 10 shops in Brooklyn and

discusting . the owners are deceitful and fake. they are fake with costumers ,they suck up to make business and behind the scenes they are dishonest and extremely nasty. the prices they charge for optical lenses vary from costumer to customer. i know because i bought a pair of glasses from them and paid $500.00 while my friend with literally same prescription as me paid $200.00 for the same pair. when a costumer is not satisfied with the product they purchased, they are supposed to replace it, and they dont. they lie saying they gonna replace it when you first purchase it, and then when you ask them to replace the glasses they say they never told you they would. Well they lied, they did that to me several times. The owner is a sleazeball i agree with the person above. Dont trust him. He is a liar. A fake liar.

* Pros: NOTHING
* Cons: High price; terrible customer service; dishonest proprietor

I can't say enough bad things about Eye Shoppe on 7th in Park Slope. The owner is sleazeball and I've heard countless stories of him ripping people off. My story is below, or you could save some time, take my advice and just skip him.

I've had vision problems all my life and had tons of glasses. When I moved to the neighborhood, I wanted to give my business locally. I went in and bought a pair of $300 frames (not including lenses).

The owner (he's the one w/ the terrible comb-over) seemed totally nice and I walked away happy to support a Park Slope business.

Within 2 weeks, the screw came out of my glasses. I thought that was odd, as something like this usually doesn't happen for at least a year or two, if at all. Anyway, I thought nothing of it, brought it in, they replaced the screw and I was set.

Then it happened again 3 weeks later.

And again 5 weeks later.

And again. And again. I complained and asked for my frames to be replaced on the fourth time and he promised me it wouldn't happen again.

On the fifth time in, I asked again for my frames to be replaced and he said: "Sorry. These glasses are several months old. Now, if you had brought them in earlier, I could have helped you."

"But I brought them in within two weeks and I've had the same problem countless times."

"Well, a screw coming out is common."

"Really?" I asked. "It's common to fall out 5 times in 8 months?"

"There is no normal amount of time," he lied.

"I've had glasses all my life. This has NEVER happened to me before. I think you should replace them -- they were obviously defective."

"Well, if you had asked me earlier..."

"But I brought them in within 2 weeks!"

"Yeah, well... you didn't ask me to replace them then. Now it's too late."

Not only is this terrible business, but it's just plain stupid, as I live in the neighborhood, I wear glasses, my wife wears glasses and I have a million friends who wear glasses. I pointed this out. He said: "I can't give you a new pair."

"But you own the place. So you *could* if you wanted to."

"Fine, let me correct that statement. I *won't*."

Anyway, the guy was a total sleazeball. Stay away.

I have personally been a customer of Eyeshoppe on 7th since I was about 12years old (I am now 32). My father who introduced me to this shop is also a repeat customer. I do not understand some of the negative reviews on this page. My father and I have always been treated with the utmost respect and care. Everyone has a right to voice their opinion but i feel that some of these comments are unfounded!!! This shop has and assortment of glasses (plastic to titanium) and an assortment of prices. I guess some people just like to complain.

Wow. I googled the Eye Shoppe to get their telephone number and looked at the reviews out of curiosity. What a surprise! The negative experiences related here simply don't match my own. I like this store and its owners enough to post my first ever review on a consumer website in defense of the store. My family and I have been buying contact lenses and glasses from Michael for about 10 years. They provide excellent service. Over the course of 10 years, we have had the occasional problem with a pair of glasses or order of contact lenses, but the reason we keep coming back is Michael cheerfully fixes the problem. They do have very cool frames, which is why I first went to the store. And cool frames are expensive, no surprise there. But, Michael also has adorable frames for kids and teens for entirely reasonable prices. I still have the frames that my daughter wore when she was 4 and 5 years old. She got so many complements she got tired of wearing them. And they were affordable. I have never been treated rudely there. Never. I am sorry for those of you who have had bad experiences. For those of you thinking of getting your eyewear here, you will not find a better place anywhere.

Great experience, as selection is the biggest plus of this store. If you are into what I would call eclectic modern and colorful Euro or Asian style frames - this is the best store in New York. I looked far and wide (hip places in the LES / SoHo / Chelsea) - and on a whim I came here and was pleasantly surprised by the selection and prices. Yes the frames can be pricey - but not as pricey as other independent dealers. I have a hard to fit broad face and high bridge until I came here. So what did I get? A great pair of Bevels (a New York brand - Big Slick 8587) a retro metal titanium in a cool taupe with a zing of royal blue on the inside. Why do I think it's a deal? They charge less for the exact same lenses you get at other opticians (380 vs 520). Yes they have attitude - which may be the issue with some of the other comments below - but that comes with the territory of selling glasses with panache. They get 5 stars from me.

I am a NYC teacher and this store is listed as a participating provider, however they do not honor the UFT rules per pricing. When I asked what happened to the $100 discount on upgraded frames, the woman said all their frames are already discounted that much; when she saw Ididn't believe that, she reached into a cabinet and pulled out a sign that said "All our frames are already discounted $100". I also purchased the lenses that get dark outside but was not told at the time that they will not work while driving a car, that I would need to buy clip ons for driving. A rather important detail to leave out. As others have said, she told me to come back and talk to Mike, the owner. I don't have much hope but I want to cancel my order and get my money back. Too shady!!! Not a good way to do business.

I am so happy to see that other people have had horrible experiences with this snobby, awful little store. I walked by and admired this small shop several times, so when it came time for new glasses, I thought I would give it a try. I was in the shop for 3 minutes, and I have never experienced such awful customer service and blatant disregard for conducting a successful business. When I thanked the man behind the counter for his help and told him I would come back, the glasses I tried on were snatched out of my hands lest I glance at the model number to buy them on the Internet. I wanted to support this local business, but unfortunately they chased me out. Do not go in this store. You will be treated terribly.

Michael actually chose glasses for my husband, that he loved, without him actually being there! As a result, I have send them many customers and they all have been VERY pleased. The glasses I purchased for myself have been real head turners. Keep up the wonderful work and thanks for making our eyes soooo beautiful!

Love the Eyeshoppe and I can't believe the bitchy complaints here. I've been shopping with them for close to 10 years now, as long as I've lived in Park Slope, and love their selection of rare & unique European and Japanese frames that I've only seen elsewhere once (in the Short Hills Mall in NJ).

No they're not cheap. If you want cheap, generic, ugly or boring, go to Pearl Vision (or several of the other stores in the hood) but if you want something special, go here.

Michael, the owner, seems to have a true passion for glasses. He's always carried stuff you don't see anywhere else and picked frames for me that suit my face, personality and/or mood. I often end up with frames I would not have selected myself, but then I end up getting compliments all the time and everyone I've referred there keeps going back (even 'all the way' from Manhattan) to get something special.

There was a brief period of time where they employed a older guy who wasn't as adept at picking glasses, but he's gone now, and the new young chap has nice taste too.

It can get a tad hectic at times as the store is kinda smallish (even after a recent remodel) but I think the wait is worth it. There's a reason the store is always filled with returning customers...

As for that "rudeness", that must be an American thing... (you don't take passionate and honest opinion well, now do you?)

I went all around searching for glasses. Would have never thought about going into Park Slope, Brooklyn for them. A friend recommended me to this place and boy was i thankful. They have all the good brands in all of brooklyn if not NYC !!! The staff was very nice and professional. Tristan was the person who helped me with it. He was very professional and patient with me. He was very informative of my options. I bought 2 pairs of fabulous glasses and all my friends love it as do i. I went to pick them up a in a few days as my lenses took a few days to make. I tried on a pair of sunglasses while Tristan was adjusting my glasses and I ended up buying another pair!!! He seems to LOVE what he is doing and it certainly showed in his professionalism. This is the optical for me form now on. Oh prices are very reasonable too!!! See you guys soon! :)

I've bought several pairs of glasses at the Eye Shoppe over the years and I've found that Michael, the owner, has a genius for finding flattering frames. He unerringly picks out the shapes that work best for me, and isn't shy (thank goodness) about saying when frames don't look good. His service is rapid and courteous, although he's often overrun by customers in his tiny shop. I have bad eyes and an unusual prescription, but the glasses I've gotten have always been right the first time. I've recommended him to friends for years, and they're always pleased.

I've tried to like this place. I really have. They're a little brusque but it's a small local business. But the frames they have are just godawful and expensive.

The people in this store are as nice and helpful as any I've dealt with. My husband has bought his glasses from them for several years now, and we have several friends who happily shop there also. We always recommend it.

We've got nothing but great and quick service, even when my husband's frames broke (two different pairs at different times)--they happily fixed or replaced it at no cost.

I just got my first pair of glasses, and am really happy with the service and attention I got from the optomotrist and all the sales people, including the owners.

My wife and I I have been purchasing eyeglasses from Michael Stoff for 10 years now. He is always responsive to needs for adjustments to his products and is determined to be sure that his customers get the highest quality eyewear.

High prices? Really? What are you paying for rent? That tiny storefront in trendy Park Slope must cost thousands of dollars a month. (It's in a Joseph Berman building, if you really know PS, you'll understand how much the rent must be.)

Is Stoff a bit brusque? Maybe, but only in what I would call an archetypically New York way. If you grew up in Ohio--or the Upper East Side--and your overindulgent parents sent you to Wesleyan before they "helped" you buy an apartment while you work as an overentitled editorial assistant for a Web zine, then Stoff may well be a bit strong for your taste. But he is a no-nonsense, fair-minded guy who is eager to please (and impress).

There is a distinct whining tone to these comments that reeks of college freshmen who never go to class or do their work and are then furious when they do not get a passing grade.

I know for a fact that Stoff does well in his business from the many satisfied customers who stream in and out all week long.

Unfortunately, it's only the complainers who seem to be interested in posting responses--which I am sure is frustrating to Stoff and his wife, Paula, who works with him.

Give an independent businessman a break!

Horrible customer service! I wanted to patronize a local Park Slope business, and I was willing to spend a bit more on my glasses because of this. They tack on all sorts of fees to your purchase, lie about delivery date, and are generally bizarre socially---very defensive if you ask a simple question, like when to expect your glasses.

Pros: Local business, not a chain

Cons: Expensive, tack on extra charges

.

I bought glasses from the Eye Shoppe on 7th. They were expensive but I liked the frames and was happy to patronize a local business. Nevermind that the proprietors were slightly off personally---very awkward.

Four months later, the frames break. The arm snaps when I was simply brushing my teeth and tucked my hair behind my ear.

Okay, these things happen. I take the frames to the store, tell them what happened, and they become immediately defensive. They say I have to pay them $20 and the give my only pair of glasses to them for them to ship the glasses to the manufacturer for the warranty. Why do I have to pay $20 for something that is under warranty? Okay, I sigh, it's a small business. I give them my glasses, wander home blindly, and put on my eye-hurting contacts. They say that my glasses should be returned in 4-5 business days.

Actually it took two freaking weeks, during which time I called a couple time, politely asking about my $500 pair of glasses.

Been to this store for a few frames.
I just bought a couple for the new year.
Any time I've had a problem with my frames they have been able to help me out.
As far as the Optometrist their I have no clue, I use my own.

Extremely helpful and no pressure to buy.
Steered me to a cheaper frame in one case.

Dear Mr. Stoff,
I am writing in response to the phone call which I received from a member of your staff this past week. I am enclosing, as part of my response, a review of your shop and its service which I found online, and which states more or less what I have to say to you??and I??m tired and busy and don??t really feel like enumerating all the myriad reasons why I left you in possession of a pair of glasses which are medically unsound for me, under service which was unbelievably rude, having endured extensive waits, incorrect delivery dates, disorganization, and utter chaos in your handling of a nearly $800 order.
I left you with a $100 deposit. I now have excellent, well-fitted, great-looking glasses made by my eye doctor??s optician, for slightly less than you were going to charge me, with lenses and frames of similar size and shape??but the correct type for my eye (information which I gave you originally). My doctor stands behind the work of his optician, and if there are any problems at all, he arranges to take care of it as a medical courtesy.
It turns out that the type of lenses which you selected for me (some sort of ??compressed? progressives?) are specifically countermanded by my eye problems??they are medically unsound for me. I realize, that as a new customer to you, you could not necessarily have known this, and we both should have checked with my eye doctor before filling the prescription. But none of this excuses the behavior and attitude of you and the staff at your shop: 1) you told me the glasses would be ready within 5 days and no one called me at all; 2) when I called, nearly 10 days later, having been out of town, your assistant had no idea of who I was or where my prescription was; 3) when I finally came to pick the glasses up and found that I couldn??t see through them at all, you snatched them off my face and said ??You can??t have them! They??re scratched.? I found your behavior weird and disturbing, but didn??t know what to say; 4) at least a week later, I came in again, having called first. Your shop was literally overrun with unhappy customers, and again, I couldn??t see a thing out of the glasses. You decided that I must have an incorrect prescription, and I left, still with my old glasses. By the time I was able to get back to my eye doctor (I think it was now more than 2 months??it was already September) so that he could recheck my prescription, he found it perfect. However, the first thing he said was, ??They didn??t make you ??compressed? progressive lenses, did they? There no way in the world you could ever use those??I don??t recommend them for any of my patients.? I decided then and there to have glasses made by his optician. She showed me some great frames, and gave me the same Zeiss lens I had originally told you I needed (you had insisted that I needed the ??compressed? version??though my glasses are about the same size and shape as the ones you were making for me). Her price was $50 less than yours. This included anti-glare, transitions, progressive lenses, and a designer frame. I agonized over leaving you with my $100, and was informed that that would cover your expenses. I was told that most people would ask for the money back??that I was being generous under the circumstances!
At this point, Mr. Stoff, I am of a mind to dispute the $100 deposit I paid you as well. I believe that your shop is poorly run??to the point of actually endangering people. My eyesight is extremely sensitive??as is most people??s. (Mine is more so, though.) I believe that the evidence suggests that you are incompetent, and this plus your rudeness and lack of professionalism could have cost me even more had I not left the glasses where you stuffed them, and gone back to my doctor. That is pretty much the only thing I can thank you for??and I do thank you for sending me back to my eye doctor. That shows some sense of responsibility on your part.
In the meantime, I think you should refund the $100 deposit to me. I doubt you will. I will put in a dispute claim with my bank, just for the formality of it. I think you are clearly incompetent, that your business is poorly run, and that you have some ??work? to do if you are to retain any customers at all. Alas, I came to you through a close friend??I suspect this will be a small blip in our 25 year long relationship. What I care about is that I can see, and that I was finally given service by a polite professional, one who made an appointment for fitting my glasses, and who took care and time to make me feel that a $700 investment in my eyes was being made for a good reason.
You should be ashamed to offer such poor service??what you do is too important to behave as you and your staff do.

I hate this place now. I have encountered a lot of rudeness. When I got contacts, I was upset about being given the same kind I had before even though I told the doctor I wanted something more moisturizing. The doctor was rude and the owner would not offer a refund or exchange because he had already written "Left" "Right" on the boxes. Whatever.

Like a fool I went back a few years later because they did have nice frames and I wanted glasses to wear occasionally. I got some frames that looked nice in the store but horrendous at home, The new frames were $10 less but I did not get credit. I was also upset that they made me pay for new lenses again, as I researched and found out lots of places will just do an even exchange.

Then, I go to pick up the glasses and was told I owed $4 more than I was told. $4 is not much, but it's the principle. The store owner was not there and I was told I'd have to go back when he's there to talk to him. I paid the balance, and will argue, but I'm sure I'll never see that money. Plus, the guy in the store was really rude and when he put in the wrong amount in the credit card machine and had to do it over, he actually said it was because I confused him. So I paid way more than my glasses are worth. This place is all about squeezing out a buck and has zero customer service skills. Go somewhere else like I am doing for now on!

This place is awful. Steer clear. I went there thinking I'd get good service because it's a small privately owned store. But they lie about their prices and their service, give you wrong delivery dates and even bungled my prescription. First lie: I asked how much the eye exam was, and they said it was $100. After I've done it, I find out it's $140. They say, "oh, $100 is just the initial consultation." How am I supposed to know there's a difference between the "exam" and the "consultation?" Then, I had to order contact lenses urgently before my vacation. They said they would have them by Monday, but didn't get them until Thursday. Then when I went to pick them up, they pretended they were giving me better ones, but in fact they gave me the WRONG prescription because they had bungled the order and didn't actually have mine. I couldn't see properly out of one eye. Their doctor gives you appointments, and then goes out to lunch, so you have to wait until she gets back and finishes her lunch behind a closed door before she can see you. This place is just the worst service I have ever had for eye care. Avoid it like the plague!!

The people who run this place do not listen and do not care about their customers. I have waited three times for them to get my glasses right and each time, it's poorly crafted and the prescription was wrong. This has been going on for over two weeks now and they are extemely rude and unhelpful! Go spend your $600 dollars elsewhere!

I got glasses from here once and they were always very nice about fixing my glasses when they got messed up and letting me try on new styles. However, their prices can be steep, and someone I know claimed that they make the prices high because they assume that your glasses will be covered by insurance. I went to another place last time because they didn't take my plan. The staff are friendly and try to be helpful, but one of the guys who is usually there has horrible taste that he thinks is funky and stocks the store with a lot of really ugly plastic brightly-colored frames that no one in their right mind would wear. If you know exactly what you want, great, but it's annoying being helped by someone who doesn't have good taste and therefore can't really help you find something that is right for your face.
