Been meaning to write a review for this for a while. I had dinner hear about to weeks ago for my girlfriend's birthday and we were both blown away. The whole meal was amazing top to bottom. I normally like to try differnt things but the server convinced us to share the whole fish. It was the best part of the meal! Service was top notch, everyone was extemely knowledgeable and friendly.

The seafood here is really good, and the waiters are really helpful in explaining the menu. I had never really been to a seafood place like this before and I really enjoyed it. As you walk in downstairs it is more casual and rowdy, but the upstairs is nicer if you have a reservation for a special occasion. I would definitely recommend it!

I have been a fan of the BLT restaurants since they opened in New York. My wife and I visited the BLT Fish (upstairs) few weeks after they opened and we had an amazing meal. Upstairs called the BLT Fish which is the upscale dining and downstairs called the BLT Fish Shack and it's a lot more casuals just as the name implies.

We go upstairs (reservations a must) mainly on special occasions but downstairs you just walk in whenever you feel like. If they don't have a table available just wait or eat at the bar. Great Raw Bar selection with variety of East and West Coast oysters, crab claws, clams, etc. If you like your raw bar you'll be glad you came here.

At our last visit we enjoyed a nice lobster roll, BLT tuna (I wasn't to crazy about the egg in it) sandwich and a down of oysters. They also have daily specials so you should check it out. Lately they started to offer delivery and pick up to make it even easier to enjoy these delicious delicacies.

One final comment, if you are wearing black pants watch out for the cloth napkin, leaves tons of lint on your black pants.

Pros: Great Seafood

.

I've been to both parts of this restaurant BLT Fish, and BLT Fish Shack.
BLT Fish is elegantly causal and has a great menu! Their fish is wild raised, the food is great, and service was great too. My boyfriend and I went there for our anniversary last Friday. It was the first time we've been there for dinner, and we had a great time. They have a retractable glass roof, and a large open kitchen, which adds more points to the ambiance. It was amazing!
They have an amazing full raw bar, and a fantastic wine list with so many selections! (One of the many reasons why we loved it there.)
The BLT Fish Shack is a little more casual, and they have a bar down there. They deliver also (great for those rainy days). I've been there many times. It's supposed to be like a classic New England Fish House in a way. It's great for quick bites also. I love their lobster roll, and my boyfriend loves their BLT Tuna Sandwich. They have great lunch and dinner specials. It's really worth it! My niece always gets their coloring books - they have quite some pages for her to color in, and some games in it also. She always enjoys that. You should most definitely call for a reservation, because you might have to wait a while for a table.
Altogether, both restaurants are fantastic. I have also been to BLT Prime, Steak, and Burger, and most definitely am planning on visiting BLT Market as well. They have great quality food, which is what I look for most in a restaurant! And who can beat their wine selection (over 450 wines)? You definitely get more than what you paid for! Exceptional food and service. Great atmosphere. Have been to the Shack many times, and last Friday was my first time at the main BLT Fish restaurant upstairs, and loved it there. I have, and definitely will go back, and recommend this restaurant to all seafood lovers!

The four of us went to BLT Fish last night and had a great time. The clear highlight was the amazing dover sole, which is definitely worthy of the press it gets. And frankly, for a $50 piece of fish, it better be! The creamed corn with chanterelles special was also incredible, but we weren't into the goat cheese risotto, surprisingly. We went because Bruni gave it three stars (twice), and we can see why. Highly recommended.

Pros: Great fish, great ambience (upstairs)

Cons: High-priced fish, but worth it

I went to BLT Shack (downstairs) several times years ago and had good meals but I tried it again last night and it was terrible. The clams and oysters on the seafood platter were off color and dried out. We ended up going elsewhere for a real dinner. This place no longer has the same quality as I remember from prior visits. The AC wasn't working well either.

Went with a few clients and had an awesome dinner. Luckily, everything was on the boss's card because the bill was ridiculous. The dover sole was amazing and they have a great wine selection. Dessert is not just dessert either - its about 3 extras by the time you leave.............lets just say the apple cotton candy did not make it past the subway ride home. Service was a little overbearing at times - i think they knew we were trying to impress and kept pushing more bottles of wine. Overall - a great time

I had heard such great such great things about BLT Fish, that I was so looking forward to my visit. We went a couple weeks ago before attending a show and we had the best time. We were seated right away and our waiter was very attentive and considerate to the fact that we had to get out of there on time. I ordered the crispy red snapper which was amazing and had some delicious wine that they reccomended. The dining room is absolutely beautiful and it was one of the first warm nights we were getting in New York and the glass retractable roof was open. I cant wait to come back and enjoy this spot later on in the summer, when the weather is even nicer. The green cotton candy was such a treat! Overall the service was great, the hostesses and waiters were all very friendly and welcoming. I will definitely come back a few times this summer and would love to try the Fish Shack thats downstairs too...It looked like a lot of fun!

Pros: Ambience, Service, Location

.

My family and I had an early dinner in BLT fish 5/2/2008. Ambiance was wonderful, and that's the only thing there is in the restaurant. Our server, Faud was too pushy, our food was absolutely nothing great, the only thing good was the special which wasn't even on menu. the turbot and sides were a lackluster, especially the gnocchi, the texture was too gummy and rubbery, almost gluey. We complained to Faud, the server and all he said what that's how a gnocchi is supposed to be like we were stupid and he said that they will not replace the gnocchi. We weren't asking for a replacement, we just wanted to give our feedback. It seems that he and perhaps the kitchen took it against us, when we got the complimentary petit fours and cotton candy, guess what I found, I just thought that the cotton candy was a bit strandy, but no,I found 3 equal sizes of HAIR in my mouth!Disgusting really.I put the hair on the plate, and called Faud the server,he took the plate in an instant as if to hide it.He came out of the kitchen in a SARCASTIC mood saying that the pastry chef doesn't have hair! Unbelievable, they showed no REMORSE, and the manager didn't bother to apologize. They realized we were Asians and we weren't going to make a big fuss since we are not confrontational in nature. The discriminatory treatment and UNSANITARY food is what readers should know about BLT FISH. Avoid this restaurant. Disappointing in every sense.

I was very excited to try BLT Fish for my birthday - but was disappointed that nothing wowed us. We ate upstairs on a Friday night and were seated right away. The service was very good- there were many waiters helping us and they were happy to discuss the menu. The amuse busche was ok and the biscuits were good but there was a kick to them that i didn't love. We started with tuna tartare and the octopus appetizer. Both were tasty and prepared well but nothing very memorable. We asked for the gnocci as a 2nd course but the waiter discouraged it and just brought w/our entrees. They were amazing- definitely try them. We ordered the cod and the luna de mer- which i was told was sea bass - but i did not really enjoy. There was two large pieces provided under the whole fish preparation- but it said only for one. I was nervous they were charging by the pound and i would end up paying $100 for that fish i didn't enjoy- but it was only $35. I got the wasabi soy sauce which wasn't great. The cod was very good. The cotton candy was great- the petit fours were a bit strange. It was a nice meal- but not as special as I hoped to be.

What can I say... it's like dining in the best seaside restauraunts accross the globe. The fish is FRESH and the atmostphere is like Cape Cod, Sydney and Long Warf... only you're here in NYC. Go early so you don't have to wait... eat downstairs where it's a little more relaxed and eat up... it's wonderful.

two thumbs up! this place is a real must. food is great and service is professional. BLT fish has two segments, the first floor New England-style fish shack and the third floor upscale classic fish and seafood restaurant.
You can see a good summary + interview with Chef De Cuisine Amy Eubanks on www.chic. tv/?v=133

When I walked into the restaurant there was a funny smell...not like seafood funny but like they did not clean properly. Unfortunately ,I did not listen to my instinct and sat down anyway. During the middle of my meal a critter ran across the dinner table. Critters are probably everywhere but if it is running across the table then this place has more than the usual amount. Yuck...I will never eat here again.

I had heard good things so I was anxious to go. I got a reservation and the person on the phone was friendly and helpful and my general feelings on the staff were positive - no wow factor but fine. However, the food was an absolute WOW! My friend and I split two fish dishes - the cod and the salmon - and both were some of the best of each I've ever had. The fish was light with the perfect amount of flavoring. The two side dishes - particularly the potato silver dollars - were excellent. But, the best was last to come. The cotton candy was delightful and the desserts were great, I had the strawberry one. And, I was shocked when all of this came out to less than $100 per person! Both myself and the friend I went with cannot stop talking about it and I've recommended it to everyone I know. Chef Tourondel knows what he is doing and based on this experience I went to BLT Steak the same week to see what else he can do (also fantastic food). I have already made my next reservation to go back and I can't wait.

My nephew recommended this restaurant for our visit to New York, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip! We had not made reservations, but we were seated immediately. Everyone was very friendly - something we found to be unusual in New York restaurants - and they really made an effort to make us feel special. When we explained that we were vacationing in the city, our waitress had some ideas for things to do/see while we were here, and she even wrote down directions for us. The most important part, the food, did not disappoint, and it was a treat to watch our big fish being filleted in front of us! Though we were quite full, we ate every bit of our ice cream sundae, and still managed to enjoy the bright green cotton candy they sent to our table. We may come back soon just to eat here again!

My husband and I frequent the lower level shack; it has the best raw bar that we've found in the city and is just a stone's throw away from our apartment. For my birthday, we visited the main dining room for the first time. Both our waiter and the sommelier were very helpful. We always ask for recommendations when we dine, and instead of saying "everything on the menu great," (my restaurant pet peeve) they suggested specific items that truly were delicious. Everything we ordered tasted very fresh and well-prepared, and the service was attentive throughout the entire meal. We did not order dessert, but they sent petit fours to our table with a birthday candle! It was a great experience, and we've found the place to go when we're looking for more than oysters.

Yes, the food is pretty good here, but trust me its NOT worth it because of the absolutely horrid service. We were seated fairly fast, but then it took a good 10 minutes to get our drinks and the place was half empty. It took another half hour for the waitress to surface to reluctantly take our order. All our drinks were empty, but yet we were not offered more. When we wanted service midway through the meal everyone from bus boys to the manager developed temporary blindess and did not see or obvious asks for help. Finally we got more wine out of someone, only to find they got our order wrong. With the fork half way to my mouthful of dessert, the bill was thrust at us, then when counting out what we owed, we were asked TWICE if they could take our money, once again, empty tables all around. Finally, after leaving in disgust, we left to find our waitress on a stoop down the street smoking with the bus boys. LOVELY. NEVER EVER EVER AGAIN.

I was a little put off by the name of this restaurant (BLT... sounds a little more casual than I was looking for), but, my goodness, what a find. We ate upstairs in the more formal space and a table by the window looking down into the street. Our waiter also told us the roof opened (can't wait to go back when it's warmer!). Several people I was with ordered the salmon and said it was wonderful. I had the Black cod, and it was easily the best piece of fish I've ever had. The sides, served a la carte, were great (we had the silver dollars, the asparagus, and the mashed potatoes). The service was absolutely wonderful.

I love the what they call the "Shack" at BLT Fish. It's one of the most fun and lively places in the city. I find most downtown places a bit snotty, but everyone is always as friendly as can be. By the third visit the hosts were welcoming me back and the waitress was sending me over a free dessert. Having said that, the best part is the food! As fresh as can be. I haven't eaten upstairs yet, but you can be rest assured that I will return to the "Shack" many times.

I guess disappointment best describe my experience at BLT Fish. I wanted something quick and good, but just got okay. As usual, food was good, but service was missing. From the front desk people(4 that night) to servers, didn't seem to care if people came or gone. At lease food was good, but fries were soggy. I would recommend if you happen to be around or right next to the place, but I would not go out of my way to eat at this restaurant. So many other great searfood places, asked yourself why here...

I was skeptical of coming here because I love Mary's Fish Camp and Pearl Oyster Bar so much and didn't think this would compare.

I was wrong! I love BLT restaurants in general (BLT Prime is probably my fave out of all of them) and this one is no exception. The atmosphere is just so dead-on to NE style. I feel so comfortable in this restuarant.

The service is friendly and the staff knew a lot about the menu which I believe is a necessity at restaurants.

Now, let's get to the food, the best part. The lobster roll, soft shell crab sandwich and the buffalo shrimp (along with the complimentary garlic bread) are the highlights. I will keep coming back just for those. And the desserts (pies and cupcakes) are delicious.

I love this place and will recommend always.

This guy is a thief--Les Voleurs--and he doesn't even do it very well. Hell, if you're going to copy everyone from Craft to Pearl Oyster Bar do it right. The downstairs is just plain hideous from the help, to the clientel to, most importantly, the food.
But the upstairs...the upstairs is actually good if incredibly expensive. Should have stuck with what he knows instead of ripping off other chefs....

But the upstairs...the upstairs is actually good if incredibly expensive. Should have stuck with what he knows instead of ripping off other chefs....

Pros: upstairs

Cons: downstairs

ate downstairs....what the #&$&%? I go there on a Thursday night and they run out of fish???? Ran out of cod AND flounder....totally unacceptable at 9:30pm weekday....had the mussels, but I really didn't want them....were OK, kind of tasty, but I've had equivalent or better quality in less expensive venues....fries decent, nothing to moan over....but I was starving at this point... ...waitstaff friendly and attentive but that doesn't make up for the fact that a FISH restaurant ran out of #*$&U%ing FISH....was looking forward to a great meal all day...I don't get a break at work so I was excited to go for dinner there....won't be going back...sorry...been living and eating in NYC too long...there are other places....stick to the Mermaid Inn..

Having heard the hype about the BLT locations, I thought this would be the most elegant, delicious, and fanciest lunch I've had in a while. The garlic cheese bread was tasty, though you only get one small roll of it for the table, and my salmon was grilled nicely, but did not have a ton of flavor, even with the "spicy salsa" sauce. The rice pilaf just tasted like white rice, and I assume the free dessert other reviewers mentioned was only at dinner because we never saw any. Overall this "fish shack" atmosphere is cute, but not if you are paying for it yourself. Perfectly acceptable, but not what I expected after all I've heard about BLT.

Me and my husband were starving entering this restaurant.. We sat down with great anticipation that it was going to be a good dinner, but we were wrong. To begin with, our waitress sucked!! She was sooo snotty and when I asked her if we can have some bread (since we were NOT offered any when we sat down, but the table next to us who arrived LATER than us got bread), she said it's coming with this ATTITUDE!! I really should have said something, but I held back to be civil and to just enjoy my dinner. Well, our food came and we ordered the lobster sandwich, but WHERE was the lobster??!! The roll was disappointingly hard and there was barely any lobster meat! THAT ruined my dinner.. AND where was our bread???... It NEVER came because the waitress sucked! It was our first time at BLT Fish and we're never going back.

What a meal I had at BLT Fish a couple of weeks ago. I had a shrimp risotto with some freshly shaved truffles that was out of this world. My wife and I then split the crispy red snapper. It too exceeded my expectations. The menu is a bit pricey, but well worth it in my opinion. Service was attentive, but never intrusive. Laurent Tourondel turns on the charm at the end of the meal with some surprisingly tasty cotton candy. I felt like a kid again! The only drawback was that the room started to get a bit noisy at the 8:00pm hour. Go early and enjoy.

Started out with drinks at the bar downstairs in the Fish Shack ( I think I have that right?). My first impression was that if I'm going to be charged, for the same bourbon I could get anywhere in the city, the amount I was charged I would rather it be a more eloquent setting than the Fish Shack. When we went upstairs, I started to relax. The service was very attentive, our server was accomadating, and was very hospitable. The menu had an interesting concept, but Lime Cilantro Pesto and Ginger Ketchup are not interesting, nor would they go on anything more than a sandwich. They offered a few fish to be carved tableside, unfortunately, after our great server was done butchering our turbot, it made me wonder if the trend of whole fish has something to do with the lack of ability to butcher fish correctly.

BLT got alot of press last year, and the food was quaility. They offered nothing however to justify their prices, nor the excitement.

What a treat! If you're looking for a moderately priced causal dining spot with terrific drinks and great food, the first floor cant be beat. If youre up for spending considerably more and getting a great experience along with it, then the third floor is well worth saving for. I look forward to coming back here for more great seafood in the future.

Never have seen the dining room upstairs, and to be honest, do not want to after mowing down half the menu in the Shack. Simple, tastey and fresh are the best ways to describe. Service WAS a bit slow, and its not CHEAP- but you are in NYC, so either deal with it or get takeout and stay home. Fun for anything from bringing the wife, to a (nonstuffy) client, to ripping open some crab legs with a good bud.

My most recent trip to BLT Fish was the best yet. Everything from the warm greeting I received at the door to the great desserts and port wine at the end of the meal made for a truly grand experience. I couldn't have asked for a better night out. The tuna tartare was perhaps the best I'd ever had, and the Cantonese crispy red snapper was delicious. It has a beautiful dining room as well. It's fun and luxurious without being stuffy.

This restaurant is way out of my price range, but when I received a gift certificate, there was no way I could refuse! We ate in the upstairs dining room on the third floor. I don't eat fish so I got the rack of lamb - the only choice for non-fish eaters. It was delicious. My coworkers had fish and loved it. The sides were yummy and the service was excellent. It is definitely an expensive restaurant - $200 for 3 people, so I could not go back but for one night, I'm glad I went.

We had both types of clam chowder - The New England Chowder tasted like celery soup: it had no clam taste. And the Manhattan Clam Chowder had no thyme in it, and would have passed for a nice vegtable soup. The crab cakes were small and tastless. Fortunatly, the oysters were good, but then again they come from the sea, not an incompetent kitchen.

My friend and I were walking looking for another restaurant when we stopped at BLT Fish and decided to eat there instead. We had a drink at the bar and waited 30mins before seated at a table. We ordered a lobster roll, fried shrimp and chips- afterwards for dessert the banana cream pie. The food was bland nothing amazing. As we were eating our bland banana cream pie, and before I was even served my cappuccino. The manager came over and dropped the check on our table - RUSHING us out. We couldnt believe it as we had only been seated for 30mins and we WAITED 30mins for a table. How dare they rush us out the door! My friend complained and we were not charged for the pie. I never received the cappuccino I ordered. We were so insulted that we quickly paid and left. I will NEVER return.

After getting seated 20 minutes after our reservation of 9:30 (to their credit, they did ask the people who where dawdling to go to the bar..after 20 min of waiting), 3 of us ordered appetizers to split.

Get this - the Shrimp cocktail is only 3 shrimp. 3! The best is the 18 dollar single crab cake. Total joke. We felt like we where getting beat bad here cuz we where. This was in the fish shack no less, not the fancier upstairs. Had the lobster roll for dinner which was excellent but again small.

Good, but simply not worth the money. 1 friggin tiny crab cake for 18 bucks still has me shaking my head. Come on guys!

The food and presentation were tres excellents! We had the pink snapper and the alaskan char, which were both simply succulent and delicious. Very well prepared. The service was impeccable. I never had to ask once for a refill and the waitress was always willing to answer questions and was very unclear, which I find is a rarity when I dine.

This restaurant is an overpriced, poser hangout that employs discourteous people. We were completely rushed through our meal. So much so, that we had at least 3 different members of the staff come over to take our plates away (while we were still eating). As we attempted to digest our meal and browse the dessert menu, the same staff members approached us to move along our order. Our check practically came with our dessert and again, they kept coming over to see if we had settled the bill. They might as well have brought us our coats at the table. We got the hint. And this was a Tuesday evening!! If I'm spending $35 for a piece of fish, I feel like I should at least have five minutes to digest. DO NOT bring anyone that you are trying to impress. You will just leave embarassed. And poor!

You would think a restaurant that accepts reservations, would know what it means. After arriving we were told to wait at the bar, where there wasn't an inch of space so we remained in the tiny area near the coat check. 45 minutes later, after being told it would be "soon", "your table is getting cleared away", and "they're paying the bill now", we opted to give our dining dollars to a more worthy establishment. The food? Couldn't tell you. The staff: arrogant and dishonest. Couldn't image what would ever get me into any of the BLT restaurants after that experience.

What a HUGE disappointment. My party of 5 had a reservation for 8:45 on Saturday. We arrived to a chaotic bar with no place to sit, and people packed in to a claustrophobic density. We were told that our table would be ready "shortly". We waited and waited and waited and waited. And then we waited. On the third inquiry, when we were told (again) that our table would soon be ready, we decided that if this was any indication of how the evening would go, WE would go. We picked up our coats and politely told them we were leaving, and they could not have cared less. Reservations mean nothing at this restaurant. It might be hot, but New Yorkers deserver better service.

What an ingenious concept: upscale restaurant upstairs, casual joint downstairs--both serving up fish, literally, brought right in from the sea. We had intentions to eat upstairs (warning: primarily whole fish carved up at the table) but after throwing back the 9 dollar Cote Du Rhone at the bar (with salt and vinegar kettle chips), we ate downstairs. The free garlic loaf smothered in chedder cheese was a nice touch. The stripped bass was excellent, but the Special Monkfish with capers, mushrooms, and smashed potatoes was heavenly. The white wine reduction was yummmy. Oh, the music downstairs rocks--everything from Bon Jovi to Talking Heads.

I was a little nervous about trying BLT Fish after reading about some of the horrible experiences. However, we had a very nice meal and the service was great. We were seated promptly, and the sommelier helped us pick a bottle of wine which was excellent. Everything went smoothly until entree time when they brought me the wrong meal. Our watier apologized profusely, saying he had hit the wrong button on the computer screen. They rushed out the correct item, and brought us free dessert. It was a lovely evening.

Upon arrival we were told the wait would be 45min. But after over 1hr we inquired again, & was told we'd be seated in an additional 15min. This turned into an additional 45min, when we were so angry that we'd gone up to ask again. This is when the host apologized profusely for somehow "missing" my name. Then the hostess asked accusingly if we even had our name on the wait list, which by that point (1.5hours of waiting) was enough to make me scream. They forgot to bring our appetizers and our entrees were cold. We weren't offered a complimentary drink or dessert to make up for this fiasco of a night. They rushed us out with the bill even though by then, no one was on line for a table anymore. Please save your time and $$$. This place is not worth it.

There is no excuse - I don't care how new the place or how hot - there is no excuse for having to wait one hour on a reservation you not only had to make a month in advance, but you had to confirm two days in advance. The incompetent hosts, to add insult to injury, flat out lie - "It will only be a few moments" "Oh, your table is just finishing up" - to keep you there. Yes, the fish is great and the pink snapper - an impossible to find treat - is fabulous. The wait staff is also to be commended for their superior service and knowledge. But I would not recommend going under any circumstances, not until the front of house gets its act together and catches up with the kitchen, which is doing a great job. All in all, a fabulous flop.

Went there last night - had an 8:15 reservation for the upstairs dinning room for four and didnt get seated until 9:00 p.m. We waited reluctantly since we had out of town guests. The maitre d clearly does not know what he is doing as he was completely disinterested in making sure our party would look forward to the experience and he claimed no responsibility for keeping us waiting for our reservation. Obviously, I refused to pay for the drinks we had at the bar. Food, while good, is over-rated and very overpriced. My suggestion would be if you absolutely feel the need to frequent this establishment stay downstairs in the casual dining area, have a couple of drinks with some appetizers and go to another establishment where youll get a better bang for your buck.

I have to say I was pretty worried when I read the reviews about the service, but I have to say most of the bad experiences were probably due to the growing pains of a new restaurant. They definitely seem to have it together now. We had to be in and out in an hour and a half - we let them know when we got there and everything was very timely and accomidating. We never had trouble getting a waiter's attention. The food of course was excellent (we were upstairs) - the swordfish was some of the best I've ever tasted. I can't recommend this place highly enough now that service has improved.

BLT Fish is actually two restaurants in one. Downstairs is a Fish Shack seating 45 and serving the kind of seafood you'd readily find up and down the New England coast---platters of shellfish and clam chowder, lobster rolls and fried…
