Excellent service, always friendly and fast but never rushed. Great food at a reasonable price for lunch or dinner. The bar is the perfect place to meet with friends and catch up over drinks. One of the few places I make a point to visit

As the previous reviewer notes, this is a restaurant for those who have outgrown sweet and sour pork. The soup dumplings are excellent and the flavors of the appetizers and main dishes are very subtle. If you need a lot of sugar in and sauce on your food, this may not suit. But if you are developing a taste for Shanghai, as we are, thanks to Chinese relatives, this place is a convenient alternative to Chinatown and Queens, and the green walls and ample space make dining relaxed and pleasant.

Pros: Authentic food in midtown

Cons: No real downside

My wife and I used to like this place and hadn't been back in a while so we decided to take my parents. I got worried by all the negative reviews on this site, but we had an excellent meal (with alcohol -- if they lost their liquor license, it's back). No offense, but the strong negative reviews of this place miss the point -- if you want General Tso's chicken and egg rolls, go to Empire Szechuan or some other brown-sauce emporium. Evergreen still makes terrific Shanghaiese food -- at least as good as the uptown Joe's Shanghai, if not as good as Flushing or Chinatown's best (and as others have noted, the ambience is nicer). Try an assortment of the small appetizer plates (especially the preserved duck with anisette), one of the casseroles, or the excellent sauteed pea tendrils with mushrooms.

FWIW, my wife knows people in China who know of Evergreen as a place to eat when in NY. It may not cater completely to American tastes, but it is solid Shanghaiese food in an elegant setting.

Pros: Rewards more adventurous eaters

Cons: Skip it if you want Americanized Chinese

They've lost the liquor license so when I wanted a drink to balance out the mediocre food I couldn't even have one. Avoid it, period.

I went to a wedding here not long ago, it was one of the worst services and food. There was a cockaroach in my noodles and we found some metal stuff in which the waiter didn't believe at first. Be aware that they are very nice at first, providing good assurance and customer services, but it will eventually turn into 180. My gf told me that the pricing on contract changed couple of times and in addition, gave gratituity twice. If you want authentic Chinese/Shanghai cuisine, go down to Chinatown or Queens and Bklyn.

Usually I don't order sushi in Chinese restaurant but there are some Chinese restaurant that offer good Japanese food as well. I tried it here but was very disappointed. You can do much better with any deli that offer pre-packed sushi. The Chinese portion of the selection is not impressive either. I won't come back. I've been in NYC long enough to know what to skip.

The only time I remember the food tasty was when I was really really hungry and had a very pretty girl beside me so that I could forget about the food. One other time, I ordered a delivery and the fish came too salty and terribly packed. The food is okay for visitors from other states that generally don't have good Chinese food (friends visiting from the south sad it's fine), but for us in New York we know better. I mean it's not that bad but really nothing worth recommending. Service was okay since a friend that went with us knows the staff. I am not sure about the average customer. If you want to go for convenience, by all means. Otherwise, you have plenty of better choices.

I just got back from Evergreen Shanghai and it was amazing. The service is great. We were seated promptly and comfortably at a round table and were immediately brought water menus and crackers. We asked the wiater what they recommended for sushi and he brought us some roll that was to die for! The chinese dishes were superb too. Although it is a bit on the pricey side it is definitely worth it! they also have a private room upstairs for rent which is a great asset! I would check it out!

They called me immediately after I placed my take-out order -- one of the dishes I ordered was out. They recommended another dish (not on the menu) but similar to the one I ordered in the first place. The person called me was friendly. The food was wonderful!

I would recommend ordering from "homestyle" portion of the menu, if you want some non-greasy traditional-style food. All of the noodle soups I've had from here have been great.

gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross... seriously gross. I ordered the Jumbo Shrimp & Broccoli for delivery. The entree was a brown, thick, pasty mess of flavorless sludge. I took 2 bites and had to throw it out. The broccoli was covered with thick brown goo - seriously GROSS!!!

Go somewhere (anywhere) else!!!

I order lunch for pick up sometimes because it's close to my office. Today after I picked up my lunch and went back to the office, I had a voicemail from the restaurant. They had given me somebody else's order, even after they confirmed it was the beef szechuan I had ordered. They asked me to take back the wrong order because their delivery person was busy. When I dropped it off, they giggled and said "sorry", like it was really funny that their customer had to even go back to deliver their food. I asked if they were going to offer something for the inconvenience and said "so sorry, you can take some mints" and laughed. Then they just ignored me. They have no idea of what customer service is.

Pros: big, price, fast

Cons: poor customer service

.

The service is horrible- the waiters, AND the managers have terribile attitudes and don't know what customer service is. And the food is...let's say "questionable". Don't be fooled by the nice looking ambiance - they just foind a really good conrtractor and decorator.

The last time I was there I ordered the General Tso's chicken for lunch and got what looed like popcorn chicken. I had these tiny chunks that didn't taste like anything! And when I spoke to the manager, he gave me an attitude and suggested I order something else next time! I was snubbed the rest of the time I was there! I've never been treated like that and won't be going there again.

Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

Pros: Looks lnice, Bathroom is clean

Cons: Bad Service, Bad Food

A great place to go in a group, family, or couple. They have great food - especially their duck and seafood soup are wonderful. Lunch time is always crowded with local business people, so go early, eat, and leave, so others can enjoy it too. Service is efficient and the food was served fast. One downside - not the best place for families with babies - it's very crowded, and waiters are moving fast around tables so little kids may find it uncomfortable, as our 2-year old did.

Stopped in on a Friday afternoon, plenty of room. Great cocktail specials, a Manhattan for $5.95! I had two! Loved the extensive sushi and vegetarian choices, especially the Mock Duck. Friendly service and pretty Indochine-looking setting.

Yummy Shanghai Chinese food, close to work - but with midtown prices. Lunch specials aren't bad, at $7 or so. Favorites include steamed pork & leek dumplings, a vegetable dish consisting of snow peas, asparagus and green beans with a hint of garlic, and Amazing Duck - but the taste is as amazing as the price - $25!

Kind of a hit-or-miss as far as the food goes. For the Japanese food, the rolls tend to be better than the sushi (try the Xmas roll). The Chinese food is pretty standard fare. Happy hour lasts until 7 and the 2-for-1 Sapporo specials are popular with the local after-work crowd. Amusing tidbit: There is perpetually a sign in the window indicating a bar tender position available, preferably a young woman. It's probably no wonder that none of these young female bar tenders work there very long.

Went there for lunch the other day, good place to eat Chinese/Shanghai food in midtown for good prices too. Nice atmosphere and many business people go there for lunch too. Good service and I liked the food. Steamed Dumplings were good, as was the curry chicken I had. Meal for two was just $25 (incl. tax and tip!). Food also came out fast. Would go there again.

Shoppers, office workers and local residents don't have to schlep downtown for good Chinese food anymore. This upscale outpost of the Chinatown favorite serves the same great soup buns, noodles and other Shanghai specialties. Not to be…
