The Scene
If you love the shopping chase as much as the catch, Spoonbill & Sugartown Booksellers may be your own little slice of heaven. Located in the Williamsburg Mini Mall, far from the usual array of chain bookstores, S&S is where you go to buy coffee table books that are guaranteed to start conversation. Rustic and bright with wooden shelves, exposed pipes, and a tin ceiling, the store offers chairs here and there to let you know that lingering is just fine. If you're lucky, one of the store cats might curl up in your lap as you page through whatever special book has caught your fancy.

The Goods
Idiosyncratic art books and international architecture volumes, both new and used, line the tables here, with nary an Oprah selection in sight. Rare books and a small selection of handmade cards are also for sale.

Spoonbill & Sugartown is a unique bookstore for NYC. It has an excellent selection of books. Curated carefully by the buyer. A great selection of art and design books as well as funky new fiction. This is a great place to find unique reads any time of year, with out getting lost in the stacks. The staff is knowledgeable about many of the books, so they are able to give recommendations. But you'll have to prod it out of them.

Ratings_icons Artsy Book Shop with Petable Fat Cat

Spoonbill & Sugartown is the perfect bookshop for browsing on a Sunday afternoon in Williamsburg. Time slows to a standstill while you try to absorb all the cool stuff they sell. They're especially excellent at display. The storefront window always has fascinating, quirky vintage books enticing you inside -- inside, their collection of art/cult magazines can keep you busy for hours. The front of the store is taken up by a big round table always covered with stacks of recent art books and hardcovers on display. The back of the store is cozy, including shelves of fiction and children's books. Their fat cat, usually sleeping among the books in back, is wholly unphased by strangers. Unfortunately, so are the employees sometimes -- I suggest not asking too many stupid questions or you'll feel the wrath of pretentious Williamsburg bookshop people.

PROS: peaceful atmosphere, cool inspirational stuff
CONS: sometimes pretentious staff

Spoonbill is located in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. I needed a particular book for my art class assignment & after some research found it listed on Abebooks.com through Spoonbill. After discovering they had the book in their store, I headed down to Williamsburg and I'm really glad I found them!

While the majority of their collection is focused on art, architecture and design books (lots of these), they also have a ton of regular books for memorabilia, fiction, cartoons, etc., that's rapidly growing. The staff are really easygoing. You can tell this store is a labor of love. (book love)

Prices are well below Amazon or other major retailers. They also have several author/artist meets (discussions) a year. This bookstore reflects its constantly expanding artist community.

PROS: Lots of Books, Cool Staff, Great Prices, Relaxed Atmosphere

This was a very nice book store that I found just walking around this area and has great book at far better prices than the typical big book chains. I would defenitely recommend to have a walk in williamsburg and visit this store too. They have a wide selection of both used and new books
