I really like the atmosphere. great date place. Food is a bit pricey but a good expereince. I would recomend this to guys looking for a trendy sushi date place. Probably not a first date place.

We arrived at around 7:30pm with no reservations but was promptly seated. The place was pretty swanky with, of course, samba playing in the background.

We ordered the Pan Seared Scallops - which is highly recommended!! The dish was so flavorful from the scallops down to the vegetables it was cooked with.

If you like a fruity cocktail like me, the Samba Juice is great! You don't taste the alcohol at all. (It might get you into trouble later...)

Now on to the rolls...

Samba Park roll made with some really delish spicy lobster. I am lobster obssessed... if you read my other reviews, you'd know my ultimate epicurean weakness. Also, great on the list, Pacific rolls with king crab meat, topped off with the BoBo Brazil's seared Kobe beef bites. Now that is how you do sushi Japanese-Samba (Brazilian) style :)

Ended the night of that gastronomical meal, we ordered the Vairhona Chocolate Fondue. The minimum is 2 people to order this plate of goodness. It is served on a huge plate with assorted fruit and pastries.

I sure know how to indulge.. :)

I had dinner on a weeknight for the second time at this location and feel compelled to write a review about my crappy experience. It took the waiter about 15 mins to come to our table of 3 after being seated. He then asked for drink orders and took 1 person's order and left without a glance around the table. We had to catch him as he passed our table later to put in the other orders but in his hurry he only managed to take one. 15 mins later when he returned to tell us the specials, (now 30 mins after being seated,) without any drinks and a request to ask the second person's order again. Apparently "Sprite" is a complex drink to remember. He then returned to take our orders....and brought with him the one Sprite. We then proceeded to remind him about the first order to which he did not acknowledge having ever received. We had now been there for over 40 mins and could not seem to get two soda's ordered properly. At that point I didn't bother to order the 3rd drink for fear he would not be able to remember a more complex alcoholic drink order. Service continued like this throughout the meal. He chose not to write any of our orders down and ended up coming back twice to ask for parts of our order again. Somehow, we managed to get everything we ordered in the end. Food was okay, unique, but not everything worked. The El Topo roll was good, the plaintain crusted chicken hot plate app, which was basically a sour chicken tender, was not. The seafood entree was overcooked. Nothing was really notable or worth the painful service and prices. Lastly, the place is laid out poorly with tiny tables jammed next to each other on the edges and gratuitously large sushi bar in the center. The girl sitting at the table next to me was literally 6 inches away and had to push her table into the aisle to get up to go to the bathroom. Our table itself was tiny and I was slightly amused (although mostly annoyed) when watching the servers try to place 3 entree places, soy sauce dishes, and apps on one tiny table. Their solution was to float 1/3 of each plate over the edge of the table into our laps. Ridiculous.

Pros: Unique concept

Cons: bad service, poor layout and cheap decor, bad value

Despite some of the negative reviews, my boyfriend & I loved the food & thought that it was priced accordingly. Although a little on the pricy side- when taken into account that most of the menu is composed of easily spoiled seafood & that it is located in the Gramercy area on Park- I thought it was comparable to other similar restaurants.

We LOVED the asian-latin flair. We loved the sea bass & sashimi. We had never has peruvian corn before & thought it was good. The drinks were good & we thought the service was good too. We went for an early dinner on a Saturday so it wasn't very crowded. We will definitely be going back.

I went out to eat with 10 friends for my best friends birthday, Saturday night November 1, 2008. He called in advance to make a reservation, and they took his credit card to charge a $25 cancellation fee if anyone less than 10 didn't show up. They would not seat us until all 10 people showed up, which meant that he had to wait 35 minutes to sit down. After that they then told him there would be a $50 minimum for dinner, and were trying to push a "prefixed menu" on us. Finally, fed up we pushed to get an a la carte order, but they still placed a minimum $50 dollars per person. The host was very rude, and incredibly unhelpful. Additionally, he had a very slimy appearance. The bill ended up being horrendous, which was probably the hosts plan. The food itself was ok, but I have eaten far superior sushi, with MUCH better service for literally a third of the price. Unless you are very desperate, I would not recommend Sushi Samba to my worst enemy.

I made a reservation for 8:00 Friday night and arrived early and jumped to the bar to wait for our table. my boyfriend was running a little late and the hostess said it was alright and sat us without him as he was on his way. after we ordered a few appetizers and a round of drinks the waitress kept eyeing us rudely. Around 8:20 the hostess came back to inform us that we had better order dinner because they need us to finish up so they can seat the next table for the 9:00 reservation. she was nasty and rude and i could not believe that a hostess of this type restaurant ($$$$) would be so ridiculous after she sat us knowing we were an incomplete table. We had ordered drinks and within 15 minutes already had a $40 tab. I have never been treated so poorly and in such classless taste. i understand that is was a friday night and the restaurant was busy, however i have NEVER been given a time limit on my meal. never again. the hype is just that hype for miserable service, overpriced food and watered down drinks. save your money.

The food is good but kind of expensive for what it is. The server was a sweetheart and did a good job even with the busy floor. We have to sit almost on top of each other and, to get even more claustrophobic, the manager could not leave me and my girlfriends alone. Invited us to the bar, asked to buy us drinks, in a very annoying and awkward way. Even started to look quite mad when we didn't understand his accent - maybe Russian? And kept walking around our table staring and trying to look busy. The specialty drinks are very good, but I'm afraid I'll have to go to the other location to get them!!!

Had lunch this weekend at Sushi Samba and never thought I could be better treated in New York City. Ordered th Eltopo and calamaris. The food was great and I got them quite quickly. But what blew my mind was the hospitality. The hostess, young and so beautiful smiling Brazilian, don't remember her name. I had my broken leg and she took good care of me even better than my friends at work. Got me the booth, a chair to put my leg on, checked on me once in a while. You could clearly see how she genuinely cares. The manager, Dina, came over and asked if everything was ok. Definitely coming back, Dina, definitely!

Came here with a few friends. The drinks were okay. The food was also okay, nothing so special, except for the calamari. I always come back here for that. The service was good, the servers and busboys kept staring at us for unknown reasons, so it was kinda weird.

For a restaurant with the very word "Sushi" in its name, I was extremely surprised. While I understand it is a fusion restaurant that my father has frequented many times in the past, my first occasion here was a disappointment. The sushi was not fresh, the seaweed was soggy and chewy, the rice was flavorless. The more exciting dishes were mediocre, such as the random chili additives to typical sushi. One thing, however, was very memorable: the mochi ice cream desert. It was probably the best mochi ice cream I've ever had, with very different flavors--the day I went there was Mango, Vanilla/Chocolate Coconut, and Lychee. Quite delicious.

The service here is great and so is the food! I had been to the one in Miami many times and wanted to try the NY one out. The hostess (i think her name is Dana) was sooooo nice! We had to wait awhile for our reservation, which was ok b/ we had great mango mojitos at the bar, and when we sat for dinner she sent us over Tuna Tar Tar as well as beef skewers to apoligize for the wait. Our waiter was great and helped us order the best things off of the menu incld the crab cakes!! Overall it was a great time and i will def be coming back again!!!!

Took my sister who was visiting here for Brunch yesterday and it was the best I've had in the city. Even better than places like Balthazar and Pastis. We ordered the 4 course family style brunch special they had. The eggs benedict was a cool twist from the usual with smoked salmon instead of canadian bacon. The smoked fish plate was delicious, the sauce was one of a kind. And the steak and eggs was the best I've ever had. In addition to the food, we indulged in some mid afternoon drinks. I had the Nina Fresa while my sister had a Mimosa.

The service at Sushi Samba is fantastic; the servers have a relaxed, hip, and friendly demeanor when they interact with you, but the service style is professional and formal. They even have bathroom attendants that help you wash your hands. The decor is also very "cool" and trendy, and the drinks are out of this world (try the signature Brazilian drinks with cachaca!). But while the cuisine is innovative and the menu is fairly diverse, nothing I tried was so great that I'd order it again. The calamari appetizer with cornmeal breading was interesting and fairly good, the tuna seviche with jalapeno and almond was fiery but somewhat one-dimensional, and the pork tenderloin entree was well-prepared but un-adventurous.

The problem is, the portions are rather small, and everything is pretty expensive (four dollars for a tiny bowl of rice? $15 for seviche with a portion size of a golf ball?). The food is good -- but not good enough to warrant that high price tag. I'd gladly pay $15 for a golf-ball portion of seviche that was worth it, or for rice that was really unique in some way. But I just didn't feel the quality of the food was really deserving of its expense.

This place is a great divergence from the same old sushi menu you can find anywhere. I wasn't sure about the idea of mixing South American elements and ingredients with Japanese cuisine until i tasted it. The result is a spicy, natural mix of two cultures that have perfected the art of raw seafood. There was something on the menu for everyone in our group, including great steak, seafood and vegetarian options. The atmosphere is relaxed but the food is fine-dining quality. Check it out.

What is wrong with the people writing these reviews. People are complaining about not getting seated fast because they came late, that they don't like the hostesses, ooooh it's too expensive (go to a diner then if you want to get a DISCOUNT on FOOD). Whatever.... Get over it. They obviously don't appreciate a good thing when it's being digested in their stomach. Anyway..... The food is amazing here. My server was super nice and very informative. This menu is extensive. Expensive too, but there isn't food like this anywhere else in NY. Get the Neo-Tokyo roll... I am completely addicted. And I want to know how to make that spicy sauce that came with it. so perfect. The seviche was yummy, Chilean Sea Bass - excellent. My mojito was quality and my second and third even better. And I loved the different flavors for the mochi, so cute. not made in house, but tasted good, so I don't really care. I already made reservations to go back next week with friends. I recommend you do the same.

Cons: ummm.... can't really think of any --- but definitely make sure to have reservations.

The food and drinks at Sushi Samba is good, but not outstanding for the price. I liked the twist they gave, infusing Asian and Brazilian tastes. The waiter was very polite and friendly. However, the hostess was incompetent. There was really no organization and it gets super crowded. We had a reservation for 6 guests and we were only missing one person, but the hostess refused to seat us until the whole party was there and insisted that we wait at the already crowded bar. This is just silly because what was wrong with sitting down 5 of the 6 at a table that was already available instead of keeping us at the bar where there was obviously no room for hungry patrons and waiters coming in and out to get drinks. Aside from the hostess, the experience was decent, but that and the unremarkable, expensive food is enough reason for me to not go back.

I didn't find this sushi particularly better than most decent sushi places in NY. I think it's overpriced and you can find better sushi for much less money. The restaurant is nice looking, the food is OK at best. I had heard great things about this place, and I was frankly disappointed. Way overrated.

LOVED this restaurant. Started off with a watermelon martini - which offered a nice smooth taste that was unique and memorable. We had never been before - so we opted to let our waiter decide our menu for us. After giving a price per person to our waiter, he arranged the best selection of appetizers and main courses - and everything he picked was amazing. The sushi was fresh and crisp - I cannot wait to go back.

I really like this place, I've always been treated really well here by the staff. The food is really good, I love the ceviche tasting, and its the typical trendy nyc vibe. The only draw back is that sometimes if you order something for say $14, you get one tiny piece of food, so you should ask the waiter about that before ordering..

OK....forget any negative reviews about this restaurant. My girlfriend and I were seated as close to closing as anyone could get because we had a late night craving for some awesome sushi the night of the Halloween parade. We called ahead and the manager took care of us with no problems. We arrived in our Halloween costumes and were given excellent service and the sushi was amazing despite it being well past 1am on a weekday. We were the only two customers left in the restaurant and were given as much time as we wanted to finish our food and drinks in the banquet where they seated us. It was very romantic. The waitress was a little miffed that we came in late but she got a good tip from us. It is an experience I will truly never forget. Thanks Sushi Samba!!!

I went to Sushi Samba on a Saturday night for my bday. First of all, I made the reservation on the thursday preceding. They called me the next night to confirm my FRIDAY reservation. Mistake 1. I explained it was supposed to be for Saturuday, and they fixed it. Sat morning I call to confirm and they have no record of the reservation. What? Mistake 2. I call back 4 hours before dinner to see if I can add another person (from 5-6), and the rude receptionist tells me I'm only down for 4 people. I explain that everyone keeps screwing up, and she says that is unlikely...they have a computer system (and idiotic people, apparently.) I talked to a manager who was very accomodating and said we would get in, but we would have to wait. When we get there, we are met by yet another self-righteous hostess who tells us we are late and she won't consider seating us till all of our party arrived. That was fine, but she was very unprofessional and said our reservation was gone, even though we called to say we would be late. The meal was great! The food was really yummy! Our waitress was ALSO the rudest person I have ever met in my life! She treated us like we were below her, rolled her eyes when one person ordered just an appetizer, seemed annoyed when we asked her questions about the food, left us with just drinks (before we ordered) for about 20 min. I found out later that my friend asked for a dessert to be brought over for my bday when we first arrived. Apparently towards the end of the meal she reminded the waitress who retorted "What? You think I forgot or something?" The tip was included...makes sense why she can justify being such an evil human being. Bottom line: the best thing about my evening was the company. The food was good, but not worth the prices, and everyone who works there should be fired.

Pros: good sushi, fun bar area, great mojito

Cons: the entire staff, crowded, overpriced

.

Sushi Samba lives up to its name--very good sushi, eclectic menu and good drink menu. The prices are very expensive but the decor is modern and chic. I recommend if you want to celebrate a birthday or just have cash to spend on sushi.

I went to Sushi Samba with a group of friends on Tuesday and had a fantastic time. A bit overwhelmed by the menu we let the waitress order for us and were totaly surprised by the variety of appetizing dishes we were presented. We started with a selcection on dumplings. Lobster and Kobe beef I think. Second course was an assortment of Seviches. (Yellowtail Jalapeno was amazing!) Finshed with some rolls and Brazillian Entress. Good Food, Fun Vibe. Go in on a slower evening and enjoy the whole experience not just the crowded scene and sushi.

I been to both locations of sushi samba and i have to admit i like the location on park avenue best, however i was there the last time on wednesday 08/15 with my girlfriend and another friend for some sushi.
I have to be honest i arrived at 10 minutes before 1:00 am but i tought that the kitchen closed at 2 am.The waitress came and told us right away that we had to order as soon as possible because the kitchen was closing. We decided to stay and order quickly, we order some sushi and some corn (the best in town)and some drinks, drinks came promptly as well as the food and was as good as always.
The one thing that made me a bit emabrrased was the fact that the waitres came around 1:25 and drop of the check without asking if we wanted another drink or anything at all since we where still eating our sushi it was a little rude, but that was not it! she came back after like 10 minutes and said politely "we are not kicking you out but can you please settle the check because we are closing, we been close for 45 minutes already" i dint mind paying since it as getting late but why would you tell me that you been closed for 45 minutes? there was no need for that!!!! we paid our check and we never saw the waitress again... we finish our meal and we got kicked out bymanagement.... yes the manager was there and he alowed for the lights to be turned up and turn off the music about 1:50 am....we stayed about an hour for the whole meal wich i think is not long but the experience was not pleasent this time considering i been there many times, but my friend was her first.. sushi is always great and service but this timei had to say management sould pay a little more atention to this kind of thing, i mean...if you dont want to go home pas 2 am then close the kitchen a bit earlier but dont rush your costumers once you let them in!! and please train your staff not to do the same!! anyway i went back for sushi again the next day...this time earlier and had a great time!!

Had dinner there the other night and sat at sushi bar. Being that we were sitting AT the sushi bar, we ordered from the sushi chef, which is what all sushi restaurants expect you to do. However, the manager rudely came over and told us to not order from the chef. We weren't upset that she asked us to not order, but it was the way in which she went about it. She scolded us, and was unprofessional and rude. This is the third time I've had issues with the management or host at Sushi Sambi. Too bad the sushi is so great, because the customer service stinks!

best time to go - early sunday evening. sit at the bar, order a couple of rolls and enjoy. the bar staff will be friendly, chatty and will take the time to make recommendations. this isnt the place to go to on a friday night. it will be busy, loud and hey, the staff is made of people, not robots. of course they can screw up when it is that busy!

the food is well worth the price. and it doesnt have to be a super-expensive meal either - a couple of rolls and an appetizer or two are enough for 2.

I'd been to Sushi Samba a few times and enjoyed their interesting rolls and drinks. The atmosphere is social and busy so I thought it'd be suitable for a party of seven on a Tuesday night. What a mistake. I called early in the day to make a reservation (they wouldn't take a reservation the night before and also require a credit card to secure it). My party arrived on time yet we weren't seated for another forty-five minutes. The hostess tried to calm our frustrations by sending someone to take our drink orders while we waited to no avail. We ended up ordering our drinks from her directly after finally putting my foot down about the way we were being served (...or not being served) a half hour after we arrived for our 8:30 reservation. We were finally served our drinks fifteen minutes after being seated! I'd love to know how they function on a weekend--it was a Tuesday! Anyway, the hostess turned out to be rude and unaccomodating. Our waitress confused our order. In short, the poor service reviews here ring true and I should have taken them seriously! Creative food, creative service...if you can get it. It's embarrasing, I used to recommend Sushi Samba to friends and colleagues...

I just went to sushi samba last night for the first time and I really loved my experience. We had a reservation and were sat within 15 minutes of it which is great for a thursday night and I was expecting longer because I heard there can be a wait here. The hostess was cute and smiley, not what I expected, and that made me feel good from the start. The bar was super crowded and the manager, hayes, saw us struggling to order and he actually helped us to get our drinks! So nice!We waited in the Sugarcane lounge and had amazing drinks!! My friend had a mango caipirnha and it was so good I wanted it for myself. I had the lemon samurai-also delicious. They use fresh fruit and juices in their drinks so they're just really good. When we sat down, our waitress came over and proceeded to tell us the many specials. It was a pretty impressive list -it's not just a sushi joint. That's what's great about it- if you have a friend who doesnt eat sushi-no problem. They actaully had a lamb special last night. Anyway our waitress was friendly and very knowledgeable. When we asked for suggestions because it was our first time, she knew everything about the menu and was really helpful. The Brazilian music was fantastic and the general vibe of the place is party like. Everyone seems to be having fun-even the staff. As for food, you've gotta have the kanpachi tiradito, samba rolls and the bass anticuchos! Those were our favorite things. You can make your whole dinner out of appetizers-its kind of tapas like there. We were so full we couldn't do dessert but we're definitely going back again and the list looked amazing so we'll save room next time. I would highly reccommend this place to anyone. Go now!!

We've all heard about Sushi Samba... I figured it would live up to all the hype. I finally made way to the restaurant on Park Ave. We had a reservation for 3 people and were seated at a corner table, which at most places would be large enough to fit a party of 3, however at Sushi Samba it could barley fit us all. We ordered a few rolls to share. The rolls were interesting, but nothing that great. The yellowtail I ordered had a slightly fishy taste to it. It wasn't bad, just not what I would expect from a place with prices that high.

Bottom line, I would go back there but most likely I'd just hang out at the bar for drinks.

I went to Sushi Samba Park for Valentines Day. I wasn't blown away but I had a pleasant experience. I was expecting worse after hearing all these horror stories on Cityseach. We had reservations for 8:00 pm, which we had called in earlier that day to change to 8:30pm since it we were running late. However, we arrived there at 7:40pm and requested to change out reservations and even though it was packed that day, we were still seated by 8:00pm. We didn't have any problems with rudeness from any of the staff. We ordered 2 dinner dishes ( Chilean sea bass and chicken teriyaki) , fried green beans, 3 sushi rolls, and one samba roll and the bill came out to be around 100 after tip. The food was okay, but one con was definitely the tightness of space. You need to hold in your stomach and turn sideways to be able to get into an inside seat if you want to avoid knocking the table around. Overall, there's about a 50/50 chance I would go back. I would try Sushi Samba Seven next time since reputation has it to be more spacious.

It was a wednesday night so we had no trouble getting seated right away...out waiter came by immediately with menus and our water glasses were filled on an instant. This was the best part of the meal. The Mohitos were not balanced well and they tasted like a marinade for a meat dish...3/4 of the glass was all sugar and mint leaves. So my on the second drink I decided to have something called a Negra something.... which was like a blackberry thing with dark rum...it was like drinking blackberry jam through a straw. Now onto the food....the sea scallops were alright....the shrimp with chimichurri was NOT good...I love chimichurri..and this was NOT chimichurri...it tasted like what was left in my Mohito glass. The rolls tasted like the chef was trying to be way too inventive...too many flavors in one bite..the mix overpowered the delicate flavors of the raw fish. And the chef must LOVE LOVE asparagus because it was in almost everything......which made everything taste pretty similar since asparagus has such a strong flavor. We weren't even done eating and they kept on trying to take our plates away like they were trying to get rid of us..so I looked to see if there were lines of people waiting to be seated but there weren't. The only thing good about this place was our friendly waiter and the initial service with the menus and the water.

I went here with my boyfriend after having to work on a saturday, thinking this would be a fun way to end the day. So wrong. I don't even know where to begin. First off, the hostesses were beautiful to look at, and the decor looked trendy. So the plastics of the evening were all right. However, we had to wait 40 minutes for a table, were finally offered a seat at the bar, which we glady took because were were starving by then. However, when the hostess lead us out of the crowded bar area, where we had to wait, to the sushi bar, the pimp manager gave away our seats by then. Supposedly to a better dressed, looking couple (i was wearing jeans and a sweater since i had just gotten off work). The hostess apologized to us, and offered us the next table which had just opened up. There was no where to stand because it was so crowded, so I sat down at the table which had to be set. But i think she got in trouble with the pimp manager who was just finishing seating the sushi bar couple, because she came over to me and complained to me--you should have waited to sit down. wtf? But, you really couldn't blame her because I saw the pimp manager go over to her and whisper something in her ear, and she looked visibly upset. I know she got in trouble for seating us at the table. whatever, i wasn't going to let the pimp manager ruin my evening. So i ordered food. let me tell you, everything was immemorable. It was ok, but as good as teriyaki boy take out. you expect more from a place like this. We ordered kanpachi sashimi, and it was CRUNCHY, and had all these tendons in it. Ok, so I was pretty mad by the end of the evening. If you want to be treated badly and eat mediocre food, then come here.

I was there last saturday, joined them for some appetizers and drinks at the bar. Inspite of pretty small space these folks keep it really cozy and s3xy! decor is all red and black, nice house music. fortunately i knew the barstuff so I was served absolutely yummy strawberry martini called Nina Fresa - two of those got me to a "bless-you-I'm-happy!" condition. Our waitress was pretty good, even though she forgot to order edamame, at least it wasnt on our bill. Sushi plates and actual ENTREES (yes, I am that nerdy type that only orders sushi @ sushi place!) seemed very appetizing, so next time I'm there I'm deffinately coming hungry :) Plus its not very crowded, even though space is pretty tight as I mentioned earler

I like it very much the food in this restaurant. The combination between Peruvian and Japanese is very well done and delicious. I have tasted most of the plates in the menu and I can say that the quality is very consistent. Unfortunately the service is not that great. The waiters are pretentious and tip driven. Once, I was in the middle of a business dinner and waiter came and offered to bring the dessert for free because they need it our table. It was an embarrassing situation!

This is the first lounge I've been to where paying $12 for a martini doesn't seem that outlandish. It's GOOD. It's done exactly like it should be done and it's done that way everytime (I order dirty gin or vodka martinis). Everything else I tried was also amazing- the light cucumber drink -Chucumber, Peruvian Pisco Sour, Mojito..all done with fresh ingredients, not syrops..just a pleasure. The ambience is also great (when the place is empty, which only happens before 7pm on weekdays)- the space is cavernous, elegantly flamboyant yet still tasteful. The food is good (not great) but overpriced..$12 for 2 medium scallops just seems unnecessary.
But one thing to definitely try out is the Tres Leche cake for desert..its heavenly.
Only caution is that when the place is crowded it's impossible to get a table if its not for dinner (not even for drinks/appetizers/desert).

But one thing to definitely try out is the Tres Leche cake for desert..its heavenly.
Only caution is that when the place is crowded it's impossible to get a table if its not for dinner (not even for drinks/appetizers/desert).

Pros: Amazing Drinks, Great Ambience, Desert!

Cons: Expensive, Can be VERY crowded

With a unique selection of drinks, colorful interior, and somewhat trendy crowd, Sugarcane offers a good destination for romantics and small groups of friends. Japanese and Brazilian fare dominate the menu, although it is not as extensive as their famous next door sister - Sushi Samba. Drinks and food arent cheap, but the ambience seems to make up for it.
