Editorial by Citysearch

The Scene
A fine blend of style and substance, this large, modern space is accented with a mahogany bar, carved teak screens, sandstone statues and sexy lighting, most of it imported from India. But this is no theme restaurant: The food and atmosphere are infused with the exotic, rather than overpowered by it. Soft banquettes and pillow-laden booths enhance a refreshingly mellow vibe, and the shift from eatery to lounge is organic.

The Food
The kitchen has created a changing menu of upscale French and New American dishes with Indian touches. Tandoori-style red snapper is delicately flavored with mushroom ghee; pan-roasted lobster tops deliciously aromatic basmati rice; and the wild-greens salad is hopping with chaat masala. Portions are small, so you'll have room for some wild berry "samosas" afterward.

Key Points

  • Newly Renovated Space
  • Exciting and Creative New Menu
  • New Weekly Events and Parties

The Inside Scoop

  1. Know Before You Go - With no attitude or door policies (some servers even wear flip-flops with their stylish black outfits), the restaurant aims to be inclusive. So if you see a line, it's because of the fire codes.
  2. When to Go - Taj II hosts regular nightly events, including salsa every Monday and a weekly Haitian-themed party called Kompa Sundays. Call in advance for details on what's happening.
  3. What to Drink - Signature cocktails include the cucumber-infused mojito and an Absolut Citron, rosewater and champagne martini.
  4. When to Go - Taj II hosts regular nightly events, including Wednesday comedy nights, salsa every Monday and a weekly Haitian-themed party called Kompa Sundays. Call in advance for details on what's happening.
  5. The Extras - With large U-shaped banquettes, tons of comfy seating and a mezzanine-level lounge, the space is great for big parties.

Great decor..

by latinjewel98

The place I must say is absolutely gorgeous. Amazing decor, go check out the bathroom as well.. The entire place is just trendy. The waitress was courteous. The drinks are tasty but on the pricy side. The appetizers that they have, are pricey as well in small portions. Pay $10 for fries. Not reasonable. Also if you want to seat by the couches along the wall you make reservations specially if you have a larger group because if you just show up they may move you from there.

OK !!!! Party 21 st

by hipdi21

Taj is nice with all the nice decorations. The food is A+ but the people who hang out here look like kids! We had dinner here and went outside for a cigeratte break and the promoter or manager wanted us to pay to get back in. When that was fixed we got back to our party and they were trying to rush us of our table telling us there late night reservations were coming in. I have no problem with that because that was explained earlier but when we were standing up for an hour and the table was empty it just left a bad taste in my mouth. What annoyed me even more was the fact one of the bartenders told me I could not run a tab unless I was prepared to spend $50 and after spending $600+ on dinner just was not right. This is not to say its not a nice spot but it does act like a big club on Sat

Great for a birthday party

by mllejeanne

Going out in new york can be a big headache - especially if you have a large group of people, there are lines at the door, and you just want to have a good time. TAJ was great. I went once before and had a good time, so emailed the event manager to set up a party for my friend. She was so prompt and easy to work with, the a setup our guestlist for 15 people. We had no problems at the door, even though our party arrived at different times, and there were so many people waiting at the door for an event (the line was literally around the corner). The music was great, the bartenders were fine, and overall it was just a great hassle-free, fun time. I highly recommend Taj.

Pros: Very cool ambiance, great music, wonderful service at the door

This place looks good but there servers are asleep. My table waited for 30 minutes for our main course's to come out and the waitress seemed like she was asleep. When we complained about the time it took she did not say sorry or anything. She said she will check. The bar was good but drinks expensive. The dj was boring and it was the same music as the sat before.

Average Place

by laetizia123

I went to Taj on 7/27/2006 with a group of girlfriends and had a good time. The lounge space is great if you get there early. Unfortunately the air conditioning/music & lighting were all off due to a power failure but was resolved pretty quickly by NYC standards. They take all the couches off the floor once it gets crowded, so there isn't much seating. Happy Hour went well and the bartenders were friendly. The music that night was a little too old for my preference, but it was an older crowd, so they have to cater to them. The people were pretty much cool, just friends meeting up to hang...no drama or pretentious people here. I would rate the establishment average since I didn't feel the space, food, drinks were spectacular or different from other places I've visited. It is also next to Duvet and other clubs in case you get bored. My only advice is to get there early so you can enjoy happy hour and just chilling out before the afterwork crowd comes in. Finally, the food was nothing to write home about. It was expensive and from the looks of what people ordered, quite plain and unappealing.

Pros: Gorgeous Decorations, Friendly Bartenders, Great Happy Hour

Cons: Removal of couches, Not enought updated music, Crowed & Hot after 9 pm

Was here 2 times since May, both nights were enjoyable.

by callmezo

I was here for 2 different birthday parties, and both times enjoyed myself. Being on the list at the door, a very short wait and got in no problem. The place fills up at night, a bit crowded walking through everyone dancing to get to the bathrooms. I was able to go up to the loft for the birthday parties, which was great since it didn't fill up and overlooks the main bar area. Music was a popular mix of modern dance which everyone enjoyed. A younger mid 20s crowd it seemed. The bartender in the loft area was very friendly and social (and cute), as was the bathroom attendant who directs traffic in the hall to the bathrooms. Overall I've enjoyed myself here both Saturday nights.

Pros: Friendly staff, "fun" music

This past Friday night was my friends B-day. She wanted to go to a really chill place With lots of hot people and great music. I suggested Taj, and let me tell you we had a blast. With the sexy bartenders and the cute Waiters. We had great service every step of the way. Sleek drinks and Great food. We ate and hung out untill the resturant evolved and took shape around the beautiful people in side. This had to be one of the best experiences I have ever had. Just wanted to say thanks for such a great night :)

SO MUCH FUN!!!!

by justin181

Oh please! Do not listen to this person. The only thing that I will agree on is the place looks great. I went there for dinner and then late night and I had the best time. B+T? What place is not anymore on the weekend. I don't think this person should be writing a review... doesn't sound like they have gone out in over 6 yrs. As far as the music, i was there on a sat nite and the music was better then most places. The DJ was very good. Yes he played everything from hip hop to 80's, but if I recall every hot spot does now. If you want something different go to crobar for House Music! Oh and 2 last things, the food and speacialty cocktails were incredible, and the bartenders and waiters were very helpfull with any questions I had. TRUST ME.... GO.

Pros: Music, Food, New upstairs bar

Good Times at Taj

by wapak

We've been going to Taj for over one year now for its exceptional environment (it's a lush, warmly lit, gorgeous space) and fantastic, friendly staff. Located amidst 21st Street's many clubs, Taj does a great job of balancing class with what the crowd wants.
The bartenders are fast, serving up good drinks. The DJs are always great.

Ugh- I had a terrible experience here

by for_real

The place itself is nice looking and in a good area for club hopping. But the positives end there. Dodgy cheeseball crowd. Hate to be cliche but it was B&T to the fullest. If you are into that type of thing great, but if you're not into greasy college kids from Jers grinding up on you avoid this place! DJ was eh. Hip hop from the 90s mixed with the typical Come on Ilene trax. Drinks were poorly made. Coat check was mandatory. It took 20 minutes to check my coat and about a 40 minute line to get it. Bouncer guy was smoking inside.. are you kidding??? This place is pretty low class all around. Can't wait for it to close so another better lounge/club will go in since the only thing I like about it was location and the room itself.

Pros: decor, i guess

Cons: extra slimy bouncer, low class vibe, music

Let's work on that attitude....

by causeway00000

The decor is incredible, but they could definetely work on the service. The coat check person greeted us with absolute misery, the hostess basically ignored us (a party of 7 with interest for bottle service), and the waitress was MIA for the longest time!

What a great place!!! My birthday party at Taj last Friday was AWSOME!!! From the moment we got there the doorman was really friendly and made us feel totally welcome. I definitely will be back.

YUCK! Don't go here!!!

by sundoori

I had my 29th b-day party here on Saturday. A mgr promised me no cover < midngt / $10 after, & a 'VIP guest list' so we could skip the line. Instead, the rude & completely unreasonable bouncer didn't even have my list, told me that the deal was *before 11pm*, & we now pay *$20ppsn*. He scathed me (ON MY B-DAY!) for not getting there by 11pm, even though this wasnt what we discussed, & that now we had to buy a table to get in. I was literally in tears w/the slew of frustrated messages from friends & colleagues (visiting from out of town) who got turned away or told to wait most left. Moreover, the music was terrible; it totally didn't make up for things. In short, TAJ COMPLETELY RUINED MY B-DAY.

Pros: location, nothing else.

Cons: NOT IN ANYMORE, RUDE SERVICE @ NIGHT, LONG LINES

Great ambience with horrific service

by purple208

The ambience of Taj is magnificent and truly lives up to its name.
HOWEVER A WORD TO THE WISE: the service is truly not up to par and brings the level of this place way down. I threw a private party there and was told I would be getting the VIP section. Not only was I not given the section when I showed up but the place actually kicked my party out after two hours- they had neglected to mention they were
holding another private party that night. If you want to be in a beautiful setting and
be treated in kind then by all means go there. If not, I would hightail it to another of NYC's fine establishments.

Pros: AMBIANCE, DRINKS

Cons: SERVICE, RESERVATIONIST, SNOTTY ATTITUDES

Go for ambience and drinks

by wowololo

The ambience is what makes this restaurant. Read some reviews re: small portions. Hate to say this but I have to believe these are early 20 year olds who are writing this. The portions are fine. They are well sized. But the food, overall is just average. The drinks are well done - and the ambience is great. You can't get that ambience easily. So it's worth it for a date - for mood - but if you want really great food - there are far better places.

Pros: romantic, chic, great ambience

Cons: food is average, svc is average

Great date/drinks spot

by bk_chic

I've been coming here since they opened a couple years ago. The ambience is perfect - beautiful, harem-like drapes and pillows - and the Indian fusion menu is just wonderful. The portions are small, which means you'll still have room for their delectable desserts. The drinks are expensive, well worth it. I'd definitely recommend paying Taj a visit.

Pros: upscale, hip/trendy, atmosphere

Cons: pricey

Ambience/go for drinks.

by lejam

I took my boyfriend to Taj for his birthday on Saturday. I was impressed by the reviews on citysearch and thought it would a good place to dine. I had reservation for 8pm. I figured from the review I should reserve a place early. We get there and decided we did not like the seating the host chose for us. She said everything else was reserved. Even though it was only 3 other tables dining. Anyway, our waiter Jesse moved us over to one of the separate seatings.I was very suprised how empty this place was on a Saturday night and we were there till 11:30 pm. I had the Red Snapper, which was very tasty. Say no to the mango chutney and raita. Beef is good. Servings are quite small. It looked more lounge than restaurant. Ambience is good, but I would definitely recommend going for drinks not dinner.

Pros: Ambience

Cons: Expensive

I've had the pleasure of hanging out at TAJ on a couple of occassions. First impressions leave a lasting impression and the ambiance in TAJ is beautiful. They've taken great measures to make sure the food is just as amazing. You get the best of both worlds here. If you come in for a late dinner and stay a little longer, you can enjoy the latest hits as you dance your meal off until the early morning. Mixed crowd of ages and people, it's appealing to all. A painful end to the night

by rcockfield

Reserved a table on the mezzanine for a party. We had to wait to get up there, but once we did, it was a generally good experience. Then the bill came... we were quoted one price and charged a completely different price. When we tried to challenge the bill, we were treated like dirt, there is no other way to put it. Management was rude, aggresive and confrontational. Worst way to end my NYC expereince, now I have to tell all of my friends to not frequent Taj. Very unfortunate.

Don't go!

by 3530

One of worst experiences I've had at a NYC restaurant. After appetizers, service completely disappeared. Dinner came 1.5 hours after appetizers. No explanations at all. Bus boy actually cleared away our table setting at one point because we were waiting so long. Dinner finally showed - cold. Is this restaurant Indian fusion?? I would have never known - food was totally bland. Finally, after paying a pricey tab we were ushered out side door past 2 huge dumpsters. Perfect ending to a really bad experience! Definitely skip dinner this is not a restaurant! Are the $10+ drinks are worth the money? NO! They are pretty watered down. There are too many restaurants and lounges in NYC to waste your time at this one.

Cons: Bad service, Bland food, Bad crowd

Pretentious and unsatisfying

by Flames21

Don't get me wrong, the decor is gorgeous. But unless you're rich, pretentious and anorexic, it's not worth it. My boyfriend and I went there this weekend for our anniversary. We each ordered a cocktail, an appetizer and an entree. While everything tasted fairly good, the portions were insulting. $24 for 6 bite-sized pieces of duck, a little pile of green stuff, and some whitish unidentifiable mashed-up stuff, that looks like it was squeezed out of a tube? After eating a $100 dinner, we were both still hungry. We'd been planning on having dessert, but we decided we didn't want to give these people any more money. Especially not $12 for 2 bites of chocolate souflee. We walked to the village and had each had a crepe for about $5. The crepes were more filling than an entire meal at Taj, and they were delicious!

Pros: ambiance, decor, music

Cons: pretentious, expensive, teeny portions

if you have a few hours to spare, then this place will be fine. the food is excellent. the red snapper and the halibut are both fantastic. the naan is average, but the chutneys served with it are very good. unfortunatley, the service leaves a bad taste in ones mouth. not only did we not get our 'bombay' fries until after the entire meal, but we then had to wait nearly an hour for our inattentive waiter to bring our check, and only after we flagged him down. overall, worth checking out for the food, but be prepared to be ignored.

Did a quick citysearch for this gem.
Although it was rather quiet due to a NYC blizzard, I had a very pleasant experience. We were charmed by the well informed and engaging bartender and wonderfully spoiled by the waitstaff but still left to ourselves to enjoy the meal, without too much fuss. Kudos! And the cocktails were amazing!

Get drinks elsewhere

by lucabrasi

My wife took me here for my birthday and the food was really nice. It wasn't very crowded (Sat night 8:30pm) and the food arrived promptly. The decor is really something as well, the service, well I guess I could say it's average.

Maybe I'm really out of touch with reality, but I think $11 for a gin/tonic is absolutely obscene! If it were a large glass or if I could have TASTED the gin, that's a different story.

Having just returned from Bourbon Street, I thought I had experienced the steepest drink prices in the US, but this is worse than N'awlins, where at least the expensive drinks cover wonderful live music.

So, get drinks elsewhere, have a nice dinner here, and stop by the package store on the way home where you can get a bottle of Bombay Sapphire for the cost of 2 drinks here.

Pros: food, atmosphere

Cons: , drink prices, drink prices

Worst service ever!

by caspase9

The service here is the worst I've ever encountered in my life! - And I've been in NYC for 15 years.. Although we had a reservation, our B-day party was seated about 45 minutes late. Our waiter was snobby and outright rude; he said getting us drinks after we paid our bill would be 'too much of a hassle for him'. Some members of our party were not let in - even after arguing with the doormen, who were rude as well; one threatened me, while the other wanted to pocket an extra $10 for our friends to be allowed in, who were guests for our dinner reservation. I highly recommend staying away from this place.

Cons: , Service ruins evening

Horrible Service

by malia707

Although we made reservations, we were seated 20 minutes later. The food was good but unfortunately the service was horrible. First of all the waiter rushed us to order since he said the kitchen would be close, but an hour later they brought food to another group. I guess that was his attempt to turn over tables quickly . Another thing, the waiter gave us the wrong check and it took him awhile to straighten it out. They really need to work on their customer service.
