My GF and I arrived here appx 7 PM on a Sunday evening. We were seated in a beautiful patio/garden area where we started enjoying a quiet meal of grilled lamb (quite good) and a bottle of Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil (decent value). Then during the middle of our meal, the wait staff decided to seat a family with an infant and a toddler just adjacent to us (despite the availability of many other more practical places to seat them). The shrieking and screaming of these poorly attended children attracted another patron with a toddler for a ??play date? table-side. Once the 2 toddlers started darting around and paying visits to all the other patron??s tables, the previously serene garden took on all the ambience of a McDs playground. If you??re looking for a peaceful, sophisticated dining experience, look elsewhere. There are much better choices in this neighborhood.

It is so much easier to write a nasty review than a good one...People seem to enjoy writing trash on their lonely computer since they are usually incapable of saying anything at the time they are unhappy. I eat about twice a week at casimir.... it became my cafeteria for the days I do not wish to cook.... Well it seems that the previous review writer who was not happy about the fois gras actually got another dish: the chicken liver salad which is completly different than the fois gras but one of my favorite dish at casimir. So when you write a review, make sure you are well informed about what you are writing about or you sound "horrible".

Pros: tasty food and great atmosphere

Cons: tasty food... you want to try everything!

.

They tried to fake us out by putting a pile of cooked livers under some lettuce saying it was terrine de foie gras! If that's what their regular terrine de foie gras is, then it's horrible. If they didn't have the regular dish and thought they'd pull one over on us, then that's horrible. Either way, it's horrible. Order something else.
Otherwise, I like the ambiance/atmosphere. And the escargot was good.

Been here twice before b/c we live in the area. My mother-in-law came into town and we made a mistake of coming in 15 min early. The door was open so we didn't realise the place was not operating yet. We walked in & 3 of the wait staff in a matter of 3 minutes told us the place was still closed(why was the door open then?). Instead of telling us to wait by the bar till they got things set up, they all gave us a nasty looks as we stood by the door. Our mom asked 1 of them if she could use the bathroom and he pretended like he didn't hear her & walked right past her. Spare yourself the nuisance and take a pass on Casimir. Other businesses deserve the patronage when eating out is a luxury nowadays.

I Went to Casimir French bistrot on Ave B, on Friday night with 2 of my girls that was girls night!
The restaurant was packed, we had a drink at the bar waiting for a table. The bartender (my god! very good looking with a thick french accent and beautiful tattoo!!!!!) made us cocktails with fresh ginger juice we had 2 each!!! sooo good! I want to go back just for it and for him!!!
The manager ( an other very cute frenchy) gave us an adorable table next to the garden door.
Bread and water were on the table in no time.
A waitress very sweet ( Japanese i believe) came to tell us the specials and take our order.
I am craaazy about "steack tartare" and i saw it on the menu! One of my friend took the special duck pan roasted glazed with a dry cherry sauce the other one the fish stew "la frioule".
To start we ordered to share la "parisienne salad' a mix of beets lentils carrots eggplant caviar and hard boil egg.
We had a such amazing diner! everything was delicious i love the tartare there and the duck was phenomenal I didn't try the fish stew but my friend really enjoyed it!
Around us people looked pleased and the staff was walking around to make sure that everyone was happy or didn't need anything.
For desert we share the "isle Flotant" surprise!!!! soft meringue floating in an egg custard toped with caramel....to die for!!!
the food, the atmosphere the music and of course the service were great.
I definitely want to go back to casimir. this time to eat at the bar (and the bartender... just jocking...well maybe not...)

I was remarquebly impressed by the food at casimir..... I had the seafood dish, kind of the famous meditterannean "bouillabaisse" which was very tasty, and my friend had the lamb chops which were excellent. we were promptly served (I have to mention that we had early diner, 7pm) and the service was great. our waitress was very friendly and funny so we enjoyed our experience very much.

my girlfriend and i happened to be walking by en route to some argentinean dinner and the charm and warmth of the place grabbed our eye..i had been before but didnt realize we were on that block..we had a very casual inviting drink by the dimly yet perfectly lit bar while romantic music was piped in as perfect background...we decided to bail on south of the border and engaged in a delicious meal of salads, big burgers, and outstanding grouper in a delicious heart of palm type broth..we had the restaraunt to ourselves-- it was tues at 7.30pm.. at a corner table..enjoyed another drink on the outside paito ...the place would be perfect for groups, romantic nights, or simply a casual drink and burger..it can fit all the right moods and needs...just our waitress had no clue...would definitely go back...waitress aside...

If you never dared to go on a week end night because of too many people, then try it for the brunch....great place for a relaxing brunch....not too crowded, great music, and exquisite food... I highly recommend the burger (seems like French people know how to make a real burger!!), and the Croque madame (Croque monsieur with an egg on top....delicious......)...... Brunch time is also great for families because the people working are very friendly to the kids (obviously as long as they behave!!!!)...
I really love this little French bistro because of its friendly atmosphere and the great food.....

When more than five restaurants and store owners refer you to a restaurant, you know something special is going on.I loved it...as soon as i stepped in... i was in a good mood. After a little wait at the bar we ended up in the garden with my friend. What a cozy little place...i had the Thai Salmon and tried my friend's Filet Mignon, amazingly tasty...The wine was also very good and only $7...Dessert ?..Cafe?..But off course...we went for a flourless chocolate cake, which was very hard to share...we'll be back soon...

I never liked that place, from the early years, I never found the food was good and I was always shocked how rude the staff is . Never the less I dragged myself for dinner there the other night to celebrate my friend's birthday. We were 7 at the table and NONE of us liked their food. The chicken was dry, the mash was cold, the fish tasted old and every dish was drowned in a ridiculous overwhelming balsamic sauce. On top of it, the service was really bad, especially from the pathetic manager who should seriously consider taking Prozac. I am French and I am embarrassed of their representation of French culture, gastronomy and atmosphere. When we called them on their unprofessional behavior, they acted like rude retarded teenagers, basically telling me to buzz of.
That night, one friend was sick all night, she thought it was the chicken...

# Be conversational: Write it as if relaying your experience to a good friend.
# Be specific: Generalities like "lazy service" or "tasty pizza" leave people wanting more detail.
# Be yourself: If you're an expert on burgers, let us know. If this is your first-time massage, say so.
# Be fair: Comparing the city's top French restaurant to a neighborhood taco stand is just silly.

Casimir is one of those beloved places that East Villagers just dropped by for years. We were always happy with the food, service & ambiance. Nowadays, at least on the weekends, it's a good idea to call ahead for a reservation if you're eating after 8:00pm. Success hasn't spoiled Casimir--on the contrary it is one of the few places that rises to the challenge & has actually become a better restaurant. It has the relaxed feel of a great lounge, good service and excellent food. If you're a fan of wild striped bass make sure to order when available as Casimir gets it fresher & prepares it better than many seafood places. Casimir is a great place for groups of 4-8 as the jazz lounge atmosphere lends itself to hanging out. Plus the reasonable prices won't give you indigenstion afterwards or make bill splitting that much of a chore.

The ONLY drawback continues to be the unattractive outdoor "garden" which is basically uncomfotable metal folding chairs on cracked asphalt. Avoid it & stay inside & truly enjoy this enduring & endearing gem.

I'm almost hesitant to rave about Casimir as its success has made it harder for me to get a table but I must give credit where its due!

I move to the east village about 6 months ago. since I do not cook, I go out every night and had a chance to explore all of the french bistro around. I picked casimir my favorite bistro for its chilled ambiance on week days (week ends are usually crazily packed!), and the habitual great food....The specials are usually delicious, the chicken liver salad is really good, the fois gras is home made and very tasty, the filet mignon is super tender, the lamb is too die for and all of the side orders are highly rcommended (I have a preference for the carrots and the mashed potatoes!). Casimir became my "cantina", I go there once a week and I have never been disappointed so far, so hope it will keep this way!!! I will recommend this restaurant to anyone that want good food with no pretention.......

I've been going to this place on and off since it opened. It's got great classic bistro atmosphere, but lately i feel like they've gotten sloppy. I had the foie gras terrine the other day and it was bland and a bit "off". Scary. I think they just need a fresh perspective in the kitchen. They need some sort of expert chef to come in and give a little jolt to the staff in general. Not that they need to change the menu, but they have been on auto-pilot for too long. Its starting to look a little run down. The menus are tattered and filthy. The butter squares are hard and mis-shapen (recycled?). They are missing that extra little TLC that could really bring them back to SPECIAL. Are they taking lower quality ingredients than in the past? Or trimming things more sloppily? My roasted chicken had too much fat on it.... Does anyone care? It would be nice to feel like the staff really cares.... not feeling that lately.

I went in this restaurant because it had been strongly recommended by an american friend of mine. I was with my girlfriend. The appetizer (escartefigue) was good. especially the oak cheese in balsamic vinegar, it was very good. Then I ate a confit de canard. The matter is... The duck is not confit at all. It has surely been bake for long hours to be so dry... Another thing some kind of weird... But first you have to know that I am French. The waiter was french he spoke french with friends of him, looked very french, and had a strong french accent. I try to talk french with him... There were nothing to do, he didn't say a hell word in french. Bizarre. personality complexity....

I have never wrote a review for a restaurant in my entire life but today that I am to marry my beloved future husband and I am compelled to talk about this little bistro in the east village where one monday night 5 years ago I met the man i will spend the rest of my life with. Monday nights are usually a drag in most restaurant but CASIMIR is the only bistro i know where people from the neighborhood like to spend time, enjoy a glass of wine and a tasty dinner at a very reasonnable price. The ambiance was (and is still )charming with its dimmed lights, its enchanting jazz, classical or ethnic music ( better than the usual piaf or trenet that i respect but do not really enjoy in most french restaurant where i feel that is what they need to make their bistro a french one!), its "branche" waitresses. I fell in love there because to my sense everything was perfect. I go back there often and have never been disappointed. Thank you CASIMIR.....whoever you are!!!!!!

Charming, organic and excellent...good hearthy wine buy the glass under $8 no wonder casimir is still a must with a big brasserie menu and always good daily specials. Eat and share the vibe that's what is all about.

Pros: organic and wellcome

Cons: avoid when overcrowded

I have been to Casimir many times. Trendy is the one word I would use to describe it. Bar service is always great. Wait service is good and bad. You'lll get your food, but you mightened get a smile! There is usually a good, buzzy atmosphere at night and there has always talent. Nice ambience, good food. It is quite pricey, but the duck dish is worth it. As a treat, it is well worth a try.

Pros: Great atmosphere, good food, great bartenders

Cons: Wait service, seating can be cramped.

This restaurant used to be pretty decent. Over time, the food quality has decreased substantially, it is a lot less crowded than it used to, and the service must definitely be part of the reason. Everything, from the soft bread, soggy salad, and 50 minute wait time, with an incredibly rude service to deliver below average food. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Oh yes, and they lie on the phone, claiming they have seating in the garden, then of course the seats are not available.

I have been to Casimir over 5 times and I have always had a great time there. The food is great and reasonably priced. I have tried to make reservations, but both times, the hostess didn't have my name. If the weather is nice, try to snag an outside table. The staff has been nice, but they seemed really stressed and the unisex bathroom needs to be cleaned more often.

I've been there a few times, and I usually end up sitting next to some pretty odd people. Odd for Ave B, not just odd, The place attracts an eclectic crowd to say the least. Aside from the bearded, courdoroy blazer professor type with the NYU student he's sleeping with that week, you see a strange mix of hipsters, frat boys, Will Smith types who need to be told they are black, bitter cougars who cant understand why they arent married yet.... Just an odd group. Anyway, the food is good, the price is right and they have a decent wine list. So, if yo really don't care who is sittingnext to you, which is about 2 inches away, I would say try it.

Casimir is almost always packed, but I've never had to wait more than 15/20 minutes for a table. Though you will undoubtedly be seated at a table with what seems like barely enough room (no matter what the size of your party), the warm atomosphere is worth the cramped quarters- you'll have fun and forgot about the tight spot you're in. The waitstaff are all very busy, it's not outstanding service, but I've never been dealt with rudely. Of course the reason its so packed is because the food is so delicious! I've had oysters, lamb, steak, and duck- all were well-prepared and tender. The specials are usually quite good too. Great romantic place for a date (try to get the corner booth table for a little privacy and to sit close!).

This is a nice restaurant with good food. The service is poor during peak hours, but overall it is a place that I will visit again.

I recommend any of the duck dishes, but stay away from the escargo.

this restaurant serves consistently yummy food, the wines are very good, the ambiance is mellow and sexy, and the service is just fine. the only problem i see is the neighborhood it's in - it's definitely a more upscale place than every other dump on avenue b. perhaps that's why the boors who rated it poorly disliked it - they're expected to behave like civilized humans instead of the vulgar animals spilling out of the dives down the block...

I made a reservation for this place in the afternoon specifically for an outdoor table. When we arrived, the guy near the garden(who later said that he was the manager) was horribly rude. First, he didnt even look me in the eye when I asked about our reservation. Then he insisted that they didnt take reservations for the garden. I can understand that type of policy but he was thoroughly unapologetic. He basically insinuated that I was lying about the reservation and shooed us to the bar. Ive been to so many restaurants in New York that are more popular and have never been treated like that. There is no way that I will ever go back.

One of first things you learn in the restaurant business is not to make fools of your clientle. I went for dinner with group of friends. Had a very nice Vaqueras. Ordered a second bottle of the same wine which turned out to be completely corked. Four astute wine drinking friends confirmed this. However the manager, who refused to come to our table to discuss it, said we were wrong (through the poor waitress) and would not replace our bottle. Not only did he ruin our dinner, but we'll never go back. Wouldn't it have been a better investment to humor us even if we had completely full of it? Listen, I can get steak frite, duck confit, salade au chevre anywhere... it's about details, it's about taking care of your customers.

Pretty good food for a neighborhood place. I wouldn't expect it to be as good as it is. Recently I had the salmon while my friend had the halibut and both were really good. Desserts- also good. Nothing groundbreaking but I had no real complaints The atmosphere is pleasant enough, just don't sit near the window if it's very cold outside. You'll freeze. Service is very pleasant, but a little careless. The backup service (runners, bussers, etc.) was great though.

Stopped by for an early dinner on Sunday and this place is just about the coziest neighborhood joint around. Everyone seemed to know each other, and added to the warm ambiance. Our order was taken immediately; the food was excellent and served quickly. Most of us ordered their specials and they were definitely special (fresh, yummy, straightforward). Their mixed drinks weren't so good, but they have nice selection of wines. The prices are very reasonable and if you're looking for a place to become a regular, this one's a smart choice.

i went when it first opened years ago and it was GREAT..been there recently and it's horrible-the food was so blah..the french onion soup was soooooo salty and i told the waitress and she just stood there with this look like:"well..what do you want me to do about this?" not mean or anything but hello! why don't you take it away and offer me another one or something else. But i also seem to have been disturbing her intimate/physical relationship with her male friend who was seated at the next table outside in the garden.
