Since we first opened our doors in 1963, Victor's Cafe has been the place New Yorkers return to again and again for generous portions of fresh, authentic Cuban cuisine and warm, friendly service. Victor's Cafe is open 365 days a year, Sunday-Thursday from 1130 until 11pm, Fri&Sat until midnight. It is located in the heart of the Theatre District on 52nd Street, between Broadway & 8th Avenue. The restaurant itself is divided into 3 spacious dining rooms accented with warm lighting, colorful Cuban art and lofty sky-lit ceilings. The Cuba Lounge is intimate and warm, featuring an authentic array of saladitos(appetizers) and a variety of traditional Cuban drinks like daiquiri, mojito, pina colada and tropical sangria.

The Scene
Salsa music, swaying palms and a courteous, accommodating waitstaff are this stalwart's formula (it opened in 1963) for transporting customers to Batiste-era Cuba. It's a great spot for groups and a favorite among celebs--Gloria Estefan and Marc Anthony are regulars.

The Food
Stick with traditional fare. The moist, hearty Cuban tamale, served with a mild pepper sauce, makes a nice starter, as does yuca con mojo, a surprisingly delicious boiled root vegetable. The best entrees have the least appetizing translations: ropa vieja, "old clothes," is meltingly tender shredded skirt steak served with fried and fresh vegetables; veca frita, "fried cow," is toothsome churrasco steak on mashed plantains. Pork dishes are also good. But steer clear of the flavorless seafood, and beware that the heavy-handed kitchen tends to overcook chicken and fish. Desserts are achingly sweet and gloopy--have another mojito instead.

Key Points

  • Authentic Cuban Cuisine
  • Lunch, Dinner, Pre Theater
  • Great for Groups, Romantic

The Inside Scoop

  1. The Extras - Victor's black beans, rich and smoky, are some of the best in the city. Order extra.
  2. What to Drink - The garlic that infuses every dish will soon overwhelm your breath. The RX: Order a mojito and nibble a sprig of mint leaf before leaving.

The food was good. I highly recommend the Oxtail.

This was my first time at Victor's and the food was definately worth it.
The service could have been better. The waiter was a little slow.

Overall, the night was an "A".

Ratings_icons What a shame!!!!

On and off, over the coarse of 20 years, I've been going to Victor's Cafe. Never had I been disappointed as I was during my recent visit on Valentine's weekend. I took my wife and some friends, bragging all the way about this place. The food was bland, the portions smaller, and the quality poor. From where I was sitting, I couldn't enjoy and appreciate the live music. In the past there was a trio who would play music while roaming the room. I've come to find that Victor has retired and that his daughter and neice are running the restaurant from Florida. IT'S NOT WORKING. Does anyone know a GREAT Cuban restaurant??

I love this place. I took my boyfriend there for dinner for his 30th on recommendation from some friends. All I can say is THANK YOU!!!! My new favorite restaurant in the city. The food is amazing and the drinks are just as good. Get a pitcher of their sangaria. I have to go back just so I can try one their desserts. We ate and drank so much that we were full by the time the dessert menu came. It's a bit expensive, but worth it and definitely make reservations.

Pros: Wonderful food and dr, Romantic, Prompt service

Ratings_icons A Pleasant, Different Midtown Lunch

iditarod

Victor's was a welcome change from the traditional midtown lunch. The atmosphere was quiet and the food was flavorful and unique. If you're looking for something different in the same-as-always-midtown, this place is worth the visit.

Pros: Different , Tasty plantains

Ratings_icons VIVA LOS MOJITOS!!!

jmorgenstern

VICTOR'S ACCEPTS LARGE GROUPS! That's more than we can say about may restaurants in the city. First, we seated promptly. We then proceeded to drink their fabulous mojitos (these are the best we have tasted). After we had told them that we were going to the theater (Hairspray is next door), our food was brought out 10-15 minutes later. Our favorite dishes were the "vaca frita", the snapper coated in crushed plantains, "croquetas", and their "ropa vieja". All the entrees also come with black beans (delicious) and rice. What a value!! We highly recommend this place.

Pros: mojitos, great ambiance, piano on the weekends

Cons: none

Ratings_icons Reservations?

vaneri

Reservations were made for a group of 10 people on the same day @ 7pm, the tables were ready @ 8pm. So what is the use of making reservations? Their excuse was that since the reservations were made the same day they had a difficult time finding seating for 10 people. In the waiting area they had 3 seats, the rest of the group and other guests not related to us were standing there for about an hour. Please note the reservations were made in the morning...I think they should have said something then and not wait till 7:30pm to give us that excuse. The food was alright, too expensive for the small portion of food they serve you. This restaurant is not for kids, and the overall taste of the food is okay. I really wouldn't recommend this restaurant.

Pros: Food was served fast.

Cons: Small Portions!

Ratings_icons The BEST Sangria you'll ever have.

WolphGang

Victor's Cafe is such an authentic Cuban restaurant. It has a great welcome feeling to it.
The food was good. The portions were too LARGE for me. The sangria was AMAZING. Even if you don't like Cuban food go for the sangria.

Ratings_icons So, so

The food is okay. The portion is just right, maybe too little for those who would go for volume. The price is too pricey for the type of food. The ambiance is ordinary. It's a restaurant just convenient for theatre goers.

Ratings_icons Very Friendly & Warm

We went in without a reservation after a Sunday Matinee. Courteous and friendly greeting and attentive service. Excellent choices from the price fixed menu, great little dessert, and very good glass of Argentinean Cabernet. Will go back again.

Ratings_icons Welcoming atmosphere

acm27

Good food, if nothing spectacular...but a very cozy, spacious haven in the middle of Times Square. Good place to take refuge--great service! Not too cramped like many NY restaurants! (Don't order the gazpacho!)

Pros: Atmosphere, Fresh seafood

Cons: Bland gazpacho, Long wait for food

Ratings_icons Needs updating

Dougski

I have not dined at Victors in a couple of years but after recent dinner, I would have to say it is in need of change. I was disappointed to hear that some appetizers were all out. How do you let yourself run out of the sampler? The last time my wife and I visited, we were entertained with strolling violins but they were missing as well. The menu needs to be updated! At one time, I recommended this restaurant to friends to try for something different but it is now lacking.

Pros: Sangria

Ratings_icons Very Authentic and Very Good

Pickles1121

I grew up on Cuban food, as did my mother (who is Cuban) and we decided to try Victor's one night before spending an evening at the theater. We both loved it! The black beans reminded me of my grandmother's and my mother said the ropa vieja was just like she used to have back home. It was easy to get a table, atmosphere was charming, and the waitstaff was very attentive. Give this place a try!

Pros: Prompt service, delicious food

Ratings_icons No Mas No Mas

I will never eat at Victor's again. Threee years ago, I had a delicious boliche with fufu there (as a Cuban, I know what a good boliche should taste like). Last Friday night I went back to Victor's after 3 years, and again ordered boliche with fufu... it was awful. The boliche had almost no taste, the fufu (mashed plantain), was not even completely mashed (there was a piece of plantain at the bottom), and it was cold. The black bean soup was ok though. I had heard the quality of the food at Victor's had gone down, and last Friday night, it was proven to me.

Pros: good drinks, good music, good ambience

Cons: bad main course, bad side dish, bad service

Excellent Cuban food, among the best in the city. Try the Ropa Vieja and Gazpacho. Also has excellent sangria. I've never had a bad experience with the service. The prices are really not bad for that part of town.
