I came in a couple weeks ago on a Wed night and this place was jumping We got one of those little private banquettes, and had a sick time. Our waitress gave us impeccable service, and was not only on top of her game but had a great personality too. (A rarity amongst most lounges in the city)!! I definitely recommend stopping in her during the week for some drinks and debauchary!!!

Place is in basement but has great atmosphere for cuddling with sweetie. Lounge and bar not bad either. Only downfall drinks are pricey.

It was just shocking how rude the bartenders were... one of them spoke exceptionally rudely with my date for no reason whatsoever!! Not just the guy behind the counter but also the female bartender who later refused to serve us coz we refused (obviously!) to tip the guy after the way he spoke to her. it was the worst experience i've ever had with a NYC establishment and I for one am NEVER going back to this place... do yourselves a favor and leave this wanna be bar of your radar.

Went to Underbar Tuesday night after dinner at Olive around 9pm with a friend visiting from Brussels and my sister. My sister and I had been there on a Friday night about 6 months ago and did not like the vibe, crowd or expensive martinis. But we decided to give Underbar another go as we had eaten dinner upstairs and it was close. There were plenty of comfy couches/chairs. We settled at a table and ordered a very reasonably priced bottle of Pinot Grigio. Great music, decor and waitress. Started getting very busy at 10pm. Good looking crowd. We would have stayed to party but my girlfriend had jet-lag, so we unfortunately had to leave at 10:30. We were so glad we went as we had a great time. My sister and I will definately be back with friends on another Tuesday night.

I had a first date here. At first I thought it was loud and noisy and not conducive for getting to know someone. Then, I was led to a curtained enclave which was very intimate and actually very romantic. The service was not bad, our waitress was gorgeous I noticed, although I'm glad my date did not seem to notice. She was attentive. The drinks were not bad, a little outrageously priced compared to other places but the place seems to warrant the price with its high end like upscale decor.

Pros: romantic for couples if you can get a curtained table

Cons: a little too loud and noisy if you're trying to have a conversation

The ambiance was great. The music was good. Couples definately want to get a table behind the velvet curtains that surround the walls. The bathrooms are clean. The only draw is the bartenders are rude!

I went there on a weekday with someone and it's a great place to just relax. Haven't tried it out on a weekend though, it seems a bit small for my taste. There is a grapefruit-basil martini type of drink that is an interesting try.

We walked in and were totally ignored by the staff. Keep in mind the place was close to empty. When we finally got the bartender to acknowledge us she made our drinks and continued to have an conversation with her co-worker. We asked about sitting down and she acted as if we had interrupted her and she was annoyed. We sat down in one of the empty seats but, we had to go back to the bar to get more drinks, more then once! The waitresses never came over to our table except to remind us that we had to get up when she needed the table for bottle service. This was right after she watched us refilled our drinks at the bar? In fact the only time I saw her do any work or show any interest was when a bunch of people got a bottle. I assume this is because she has to do little work for a tip thats included. Don't waste your time.

Under Bar is definitely under par. The waiters are so pretentious they have no clue of what is available at the bar. They bring the wrong drinks. The wait staff does not listen or pay attention to what the customers want. As it was raining, my friends and I had hung are umbrellas on the coat wrack. On our way back some of the umbrellas were missing. We inquired from the bouncer, he started rambling that we were not supposed to keep it there. Then he started making snotty remarks to some guests who were visiting from overseas.

I guess it draws clueless clientele from the W. These guests are from out of town and have no clue and thus ignorantly patronize this place. Simply put, not worth your money or timebetter places in NYCdont give them your money. If you have no other bar in NYC to be at, then go here

I have to agree with the so-so reviews of this place. IT's a cool spot, nice interior, although a bit small. I've been lucky to get one of those cozy cubby seats both times I've been there. THere are "reserved" signs on every table (come on) so that if they decide to kick you out at any time, you have to go. We were there for about an hour and were reminded that the table was "reserved" about 5 times, and that we might have to leave at any time (what, in case a celebrity comes in or something? Not likely..)The drinks were watered down, VERY pricey, the service was unpredictable, and the waitresses were a bit snotty. If they adjust the attitude and prices, it would be a really enjoyable place.

Very disappointing visit. One of the managers was very rude to our group when he was asking us to move from a supposedly "reserved" area where we had been seating for an hour already. He was very dismissive and autocratic. Definitely not how you would like to be treated as a paying customer! The drinks were overpriced and the service was lousy. This bar is definitely not recommended.

When it is somewhat slow and quiet, this is a great place for a date. Nice ambience. But once it hits 9p.m., the throngs of "suits" come in and the music starts to get really, really loud. As in, have to shout on the top of your lungs loud. And by the way, this is not a "hip" bar. It's all yuppies and suits. And the drinks are average to sort of blah. But again, if this is a date, it would be a nice place to go for the overall setting and ambience

this spot was a cool lounge to hang out at. my boyfriend and i went to ny for our 1st time and as soon as we arrived we hit this spot since we wanted to chill somewhere and just lay low. it was a very mixed crowd andi would say avg age was 25-35. they played hip hop music and is was a good spot to just mingle and dance if you wanted to. most of the people were just talking and meeting people so my boyfriend and i enjoyed the atmostphere. if u are a couple or just looking for a cool spot to chill... this lounge is a definate recommend.

Terrible.. Simply terrible. Pay $11 for drinks that do not qualify as a drink in any other place in this city. Only positive thing that can be said about this lounge is that its name fits perfectly: "Under"bar..

Went there at 2:30am with a friend on a Friday, the place was not crowded at all we sat at the bar. The Bar tender (who will remain nameless), kept pouring us shots and refilling my Sambuca that I orginially ordered, we must of had a toal of 2 double shots each and 3 other drinks. When I was handed the bill the total was $10.00 needless to say the tip was bigger than the bill. Never met the bartender before, never was in the the Underbar before, needless to say it was a great time for such an exclusive bar in NEW YORK CITY!!

I should have listened to all the bad reviews. The bar upstiars (Olives) has far friendlier staff, MUCH better drinks. The staff at underwheling bar was cuter than thou, ignored you and some were downright rude. Learn from my experience, do not even bother.

Not quite. Underbar lies below the chic and popular W hotel in Union Square. It is a nice looking bar with plenty of seating, but in the busy hours, you're standing. It also offers private niches behind curtains within the walls where a couple can sit privately and chat and be somewhat intimate. I suppose it makes good for a bar after a date, where one can continue and entertain actual conversation. The music is a mix of the new and popular with some 80s thrown in, however, Underbar does not offer much else. The service is BLAH with prices to match. Underbar is just an underperformer, and this is no underestimation! ;-)

well it is in W hotel, which is amazing, but underbar is too small and too crowded. i like the dimmed light and a lot of seatings at this place, but there just ain't enough room for most people!! Drinks were average at best. my apple martini had nearly no alcohol in it at all! people that were hanging out there were all rude and there were just too many servers walk right between you and your friends in the middle of your conversation. i wouldn't really go back here, go across the street to union bar or go to lemon or something

The place is ok in it's minimalist, dark setting. The drinks, average, not bad. What sets it apart is the pathetic service. I came in with friends from the UK and from work, the place was not very busy and we all sat down in a corner. After buying 10 of the $9 drinks and leaving a generous tip, the extremely rude, slovenly "hostess" dressed in a hooded sweatshirt came over and told us to move around, then to get up because the table was reserved. When we pointed out there was no sign, she pulled one out , dropped it on the table and waled away. So not worth the effort. Go somewhere that is trendy enough to get away with it, not one where the staff should be at McDonald's.

My review is based on two separate experiences within a week whild staying at the W Hotel Union Square. Each experience was quite different. The first night was horrible. Small crowd, dark atmosphere, and ZERO service despite a bored cocktail waitress proped up against the wall. She obviously feels her looks are an excuse that allows her to avoid actually serving drinks. We left after several minutes of attempting to get her attention. Surprisingly, just a few nights later we were with a friend who was curious about seeing the place so tried again and had a good time. The crowd was a bit bigger and the service much better. We made a smart choice of occupying a private booth and ordering the Apple Martinis. The booth makes a big difference and the Martinis were very good. Still, I highly doubt I'll ever go back.

The cibe was there, and the girls i met were nice, but overall, I wasn't sure what this place was about.

No room to dance, and by 11 on a Friday we went, the place cleared out.

It seems like a pit stop before rolling out, but it might make a good place to bring a hot date.

The waitresses are very hot.

The worste bar I have been to in NY. The drinks

all tonic and ice! The service was slow and
rude. Don't waste your money here. If you want
both atmosphere and good drinks I recommend
Flute (a few blocks away) or the downstairs
of the Coffee Shop (Union Square).

WOW! An evening not soon forgotten! What a place! As I sauntered down the snake-like staircase you are poured out into a golden-grey candle-lit atmosphere with an oasis of a bar I could live at! A fantastic time! The music is current (important) and sets the mood of people watching/ drink experimentation perfectly! My sterling drinking guide was Heather a top-notch, adventurous and knowledgeable bartender! She was enthusiastic and offered me up one after another carefully concocted drink. I told her my interests taste-wise and she put them in liquid form! The service here is quick and attentive overall, the lounge is comfy and roomy, the candlelighting is mysterious and sexy. The drinks are ample and exotic Heather had some notable suggestions. (Ask for her and see what she makes you.) The crowd was evenly balanced male and female with lots to look at. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED I'll definitely be back!

As the name implies, its underground. In my opinion one of the best W hotel bars. Dark plush velvet, candles, little private enclaves if you can get one early enough (with a curtain that draws across to give you privacy!) and generally a good crowd. It does tend to get overcrowded on some nights though, and lately too many tourists!

In general, par for the course for these types of places. Once there, I kind of had a flashback to when your hanging out and drinking in someones basement in high school and the lights are low cause the kid doesn't want you to see his parents outdated furniture. I like the policy that they only hire waitresses with long legs and short skirts, though. Staff was pleasant too.
