La Giara is like a new $35 pair of pleather dress shoes. They're fine if nobody with any fashion sense notices them. La Giara is perfect for the sorority sister and her first year med school boyfriend. The atmosphere is good, the food isn't bad and the prices are reasonable.

However, avoid Giara if you're a foodie or are out to impress. Here's some of the things which I might not have noticed ten years ago but just don't fly for me at the ripe old age of 40:

1. I clearly stated to the waitress that my friend and I were splittng the salad. (Any good restaurant would have brought it out on two plates or at least asked if we'd like it served on two plates.)

2. Who serves a bronzino filet? (Not serving whole bronzino is like removing the t-bone from a porterhouse.)

3. Red pepper flakes in a paper cup at the table? (Does La Giara transform into a pizza joint after midnight?)

4. The special was saltimboca. The waitress didn't know what that meant.

5. No peppermill offered with the salad. I guess that's what the red pepper flakes were for after all.

6. I sat with an empty glass of sangria for ten minutes and finally had to get up and ask the waitress for another (Perhaps she just doesn't like tips).

In sum, La Giara is a good first date place for anyone who still has a roommate and sleeps on a futon. Then again, that describes most residents of Murray Hill. So I suppose Kudos to the owners. But I won't be back.

I had the pleasure of eating at La Giara last night, what a great experience! The food was amazing and the service by staff was excellent. I especially want to give my compliments to the chef Pasquale Martinelli who incidentally has been featured on Martha Stewart Show.

Pasquale made us feel at home and took care of us as if we were invited to his house. He designed the entire meal for us, from appetizers, to wine selection and of course the main dish. I did not look at the menu once and enjoyed all the courses. The price was very reasonable for the service and meal we had. I would highly recommend La Giara.

Pros: Amazing food

Great brunch place, especially if you like mimosas. They have a deal where you get unlimited mimosas with the purchase of one. Unfortunately the deal doesn't include bloody mary's or Bellini's but they certainly keep the mimosas flowing. The food is so-so but they service and brunch deal make it worth the trip.

I've eaten here several times, and have always had a great meal . This place is pretty good. My favorite dishes are the pasta and the times I have tried the specials they are always great!. I recommended it to someone I work with who also loved it and recommended it to the rest of her family. The bar is always packed with familiar faces.

We had dinner here on a Friday night and made reservations for 7:00. When we arrived we were seated promptly at a great table in the window. The buschetta was wonderful with cheese and pancetta. The artichoke salad had a bit too many leaves making it difficult to chew, but the flavor was good. The wine list was short (but had some good choices) and the bottle prices were a good value. The pastas were excellent and well portioned. The highlight of the meal was our waitress, she was really nice, made some great suggestions, and was prompt but not pushy.

This is such a great restaurant! I always love going to La Giara for the food, but also for the ambiance! The pasta dishes are amazing! One of the best pasta places in the City. They also have an amazing wine list that is quite reasonable. I haven't been to the unlimited Mimosa refill brunch they have on the weekends, but I heard it is a great deal!

I love this place! My friends gave me a b-day party here. Yummy food selection and I want to go there again to try every kind! My b-day is in cold weathery month, so I couldn't eat outside, but in the summer, you can sit outside and enjoy the busy third avenue atmosphere.

We read the reviews on this site and decided to finally go to La Giara. The gnocchi and potato crusted salmon were pretty good. However, the service was slow and a bit disorganized. The waiter came back to ask "Is there something missing?", which I kindly responded "my drink and our dinner..."(a beer which I had ordered at least five minutes before and dinner which we had ordered almost 25 minutes earlier). Additionally, our waiter seemed to do a disappearing act at the end of the meal, as the hostess brought desert menus and took the check. As in most restaurants, service can be hit-or-miss based on the night and the server. However, for a decent restaurant like this, I would expect better service.

Pros: Great Murray Hill location, pretty good food

I have lived in the murray hill area for some time, and have not been to la giara in some time. FORTUNATELY, my wife and i went last sunday and had a fantastic time. The food was delicious, the service was professional and warm and the ambiance was welcoming. We started with a beet and blue cheese salad that was refreshing. Our pastas were perfect and the tiramisu was amazing. We have found our new regular neigborhood spot.

I had been here a number of times for the prix fixed lunch. The prix-fixed lunch has a good selection of appertizers and entrees. The price is also very great for its value. ( $14 for one appertizer and one entree). The portions were decent too.

The steam mussels with lemon broth is the best I 've ever had in NYC. (I normall don't eat mossels becaue it's hard to make it good). There a number of appertizers and entrees I tried that were delious as well, just like the food I tried in Italy. The stuff eegplant, linguini with calamari, the chicken breast with olive source.....

I also brought a few of my coworkers here for lunch a few time. They also fell in love with this restaurant too.

My father made a reservation, based upon hearing great reviews... and we all love Italian food... from the beginning to the end of our experience we had a beautiful time! The eggplant pasta (forgot the name) was to die for! I ate the entire tiamisu by myself, and my parents had this potato side that was soooo yummy! Everyone's tastebuds were happy that night... All in all cute, quite neighborhood, classic NYC experience. Thank you for a great time!

i ordered take out on a slow sunday night and it took over an hour to get here (i only live 2 blocks away). If I would have know it was going to take so long, I would have gone out and got it myself. Really sad. They showed up with no change, the wrong order and no bread. Thanks for nothing !!

La Giara has been a favorite of mine for a very long time. The food is always consistently good. The menu is such a nice blend of many different dishes, it is very hard to get bored, but the specials are also great! The cozy atmosphere and great staff provide an incredible atmosphere. Again, in a city with so many restaurants, this remains my favorite!!

This place is totally amazing! Great food, awesome knowlegable staff,
LA GIARA is the best place to hang out with friends, drink some wine, and munch on the most creative combinations of food! the prices are surprisingly reasonable, the wine list is huge, (lots of friendly help deciding on which one from the staff), and the chef is adorable!

So , this is what italian food should taste like.
Not only the recipes are original, but they really good , not only on paper.
Great pastas, of course, but also different desserts(try the latte cheese cake) and a grest wine selection.
You still pay $6 dollar for a glass of chianti!!!
This place is cheap for the quality of food you get.
Worth a visit.

BEEN THERE A FEW TIMES, FOUND IT AN EXQUISITE LITTLE RESTAURANT.
THEY HAVE SOME RARE ITALIAN RECIPES... NOT A LOT OF TOMATO RECIPES.
THE WINE LIST IS COOL ...A LOT OF WINES BOTTLE UNDER 30.
Try the Short ribs in soffritto sauce, and a unique flourless almond chocolate cake.
AH, GREAT LIMONCELLO MARGARITA.

A couple of friends and I went for a late dinner at this restaurant. The waiter was the rudest waiter I have ever had. He refused to serve us for no apparent reason. There was two women next to us that wanted a "quiet dinner" and asked him to have us move. First of all, we were not being loud and second of all, instead of having us move he just kicked us out.
I complained to the manager who offered to move us and pay for our appetizers. He even admitted the waiter was a jerk. The waiter hid in the kitchen while I was having this conversation.
We told the manager it was not worth a few appetizers to be treated that way and left.

This place has become a favorite of mine! I find the atmoshere very cozy and romantic--a great date place! I have eaten there half a dozen times and everytime the food and the service were excellent. I would recommend the home made pastas! They also have a decent wine list and they can make a good cocktail!

The lunchtime prix-fixe menus are a great deal at this classy establishment. At dinner, standout starters include the fritto misto plate with a side of marinara sauce and the spiced pork skewers with zucchini fritters. For a main course,…
