Highly recommend.

After much deliberation I decided to throw my birthday party at Common Ground - I actually went around and checked out a few different bars to find the best which would handle a large party. Honestly I had never been to there before but the reviews were enticing, the location was ideal, and overall the place looked/felt perfect (it has a really good vibe). So I decided to talk to the bartender about the logistics, who was actually the owner, and he quickly offered me a reserved sections large enough for my party (about 40 people) free of charge. We emailed back and forth as the party got closer, he was so nice about helping set up and going over specifics. The party was great, we had most of the back section which we filled up and everyone had a really great time. The majority of my friends had never been to the bar but we all agreed we would be back more often.

Great happy hour? You'd never know it from the indifferent bartender we encountered at our first visit to Common Ground. She didn't see any reason to inform us about any happy hour specials whatsoever. She was more inclined to pay attention to the people at the bar who seemed to be regulars. This shouldn't be a quiz night where we have to extract information from an amazingly lax bartender one clue at a time. The food, when it finally arrived, was fabulous. This, and only this, would be reason to give the place another try. The bartender did serious injustice to the cred of Common Ground. Beware, all who enter and come armed with knowledge of what it being offered.

We each split the Prime Rib which came with a huge loaded Backed Potato, amazing creamed spinach, a Salad, and cornbread. we could barely walk out of the place!

My friends recommended this place because they live in the neighborhood and they''re there all the time. So I gave it a shot. What a compfy place to hang out and relax with a cocktail. The red velvet couches are great for chilling on with drinks, food, and boardgames. The music is excellent and not so loud (I could actually hear myself think). The happy hour is amazing. We ate and drank a ton and spent about $15 each. The place was not too busy, but hey, it was a Tuesday night. I'll definitely be back.

Pros: Comfortable, great music, happy hour, boardgames

Cons: It's not closer to my apartment

.

This place is great. The food rocks, and during happy hour it's practically free. Excellent beer selection. I'm not really into board games, but my friends are, and they love playing them at Common Ground (supposedly they have all the classics). I just drink the fine booze and watch sports on the HD TVs. The staff really make you feel welcome at this place, which is why we continue to go. That and, of course, the jukebox, which is the best in the city, if not the country.

Pros: Food, TVs, Jukebox, Service, and boardgame selection

Cons: Gets really busy on the weekends, but where is that not the case in the East Village

.

The bar and prices are fair/average. The down point are the downright cranky waitresses. They don't smile or provide good service. I understand that they are very busy but they are obviously angry about something and take it out on the customers. They make it their business to tell you off as if it gets their rocks off. I experienced this twice from the same waitress that is there on pub trivia night. Neither times did I do anything anything wrong. For example, I asked to close my tab and when I saw that she overcharged me I told her so. She is quick to a reply with a sarcastic "I don't think so." I don't like being ripped off so I tell her she's incorrect. She proceeds to tell me off for something I had no control over. Ultimately she refunded my money when she realized but didn't admit to being wrong. She continued to be sarcastic has if it was my fault she made the mistake. I appreciate the fact that she was stressed but there was no need to yell at me when I was polite about the whole matter. This person obviously has anger issues and it's a shame she works at such a great bar. Also, after observing her with other patrons, I noticed she is selectively polite with certain people. The fact that the ones she is good to those that tend to be her own ethnicity and the ones she is rude to tend to be a person of color may just be a coincidence. Needless to say, I will never be going back to that bar again until I hear she's quit or has been sacked. The service is horrible and I plan to tell all my friends and NYU students not to go there until the problem is fixed.

Otherwise, the price of food and drinks are average for a bar (about 6-7 for a drink and 10-15 for appetizers). I enjoy the games that the bar provides for amusement.

Common Ground has a really great happy hour with some delicious foods, and they have a pretty good beer selection. As long as you go when it's not crowded, you'll probably have a good time, especially if you're just looking to hang out with friends and play a game of Clue. But when it gets crowded, the place is a mess. The crowd is generally obnoxious, but not oppressively so. They have a jukebox, but if you play a song that the bartenders don't like, they'll skip it -- and if you ask why, like I did, and say that you paid for that sweet jam, they'll just scoff at you about how sub-par your taste in music is. Last time I was at the bar til closing time, the bartender was literally so drunk she was LAYING ON THE BAR. Ugh. Classy.

Cons: Disrespectful staff

First off: I do not work at Common Ground. I have lived in the neighborhood for a few years now and went here for the first time last night. I was very, very happy that I did. It was trivia night, which was a lot of fun. The crowd was perfect: people in their late 20s and early 30s. Not snooty, not too hipsterish, but definitely cool. People would smile and make a space for you if you wanted to squeeze by their chair to order a drink at the bar. The bartenders were efficient and friendly and the drinks were reasonably priced. The seating is comfortable and spacious; I didn't have to stand at all. The bar wasn't crowded, but it wasn't empty either - especially considering the crappy weather. It seems like there is a nice, accepting group of regulars. I like that and may just become one of them. And what's wrong with board games?!

Been here a few times with friends for their parties. Loved the place, so I had my 30th birthday here. The space in back is awesome. Had about 45 friends and they all loved it. The jukebox is great (when you finally get to hear your songs). Staff was attentive and extremely friendly. Food was delicous. Thanks Common Ground for making my 30th wonderful. I'll recommend you often.

It's true that the beer selection is good here. You might like this place if you like board games, let's say a Tues night or something. However, in general this place is not cool. I've lived on 14th street for years, before this place first opened. There are much better bars in the area. Don't get too crazy about this one because of the over-rated, staff made posts.

I'll also admit that I've been here a bunch of times because my cousin likes board games.
But here is what I don't like:
First, the ugly sign and decor. The ambiance doesn't really fit with the area and crowd. Who are they trying to kid? Are we in a living room or a study?

The food is only OK.

The staff is not that hot -- they aren't super nice/cool either.

The crowd isn't that great, it's mostly uptown types who want tell their co-workers that they were hanging out downtown. Overall, not cool.

The music has a lot of room for improvement.

I went here with my boyfriend for trivia night, and it was easily one of the worst places we've ever been. It was full of very nerdy, very competitive players. I mean people were covering their answers with their hands and whispering to each other. Very odd for a bar. This place is nearby so many better bars... we left early and went across the street. I suggest you skip it altogether.

I just moved into the East Village. I popped into Common Ground for the first time yesterday to catch the Yanks/Sox game. I really like this bar. The bartender was extremely friendly. The other customers I chatted with were also down to earth and real nice (even the Sox fans). I didn't taste the food, but it certainly looked delicious. To top it off, two fantastic HD plasmas for watching the games. I think this place'll become my new local.

Just had my 25th birthday party here this past weekend. They reserved a huge space in the back for about 50 of my friends for free. The service was excellent. Even though the place was packed, I never saw the bottom of my glass. I highly recommend this place for birhtday parties.

So I dropped by here the other night because of all the curiously positive remarks. Upon arriving a noticed the bartenders were pretty average, not as hot as other posts said. The layout is pretty cool and a good selection of beers, but a very nerdy crowd. What's up with the board games?

After being extremely dissappointed from this place not being awesome (since it is rated so high) I decided to look at the previous ratings again.

Here's what I found. It's obvious that the owner/staff is monitoring the ratings on this site very closely. ANY time there is any sort of negative remark, it is immediately followed by extremely great recomendations.

On 4/3 there was a negative rating, followed by a great rating on 4/4
On 8/15 there was a negative rating, followed by a great rating on 8/16.
On 7/19 there was a negative rating, followed by a great rating on 7/20.
On 5/17 there was a negative rating, followed by two great ratings on 5/17 and one on 5/18.

This raises a flag because there are typically several weeks or months between the good reviews, but any time there is a negative review, it is immediately followed by an extremely positive review. Something very fishy about that.

I find it funny that I actually signed up for this website just to write a review for this place...and I only did it because they undoubtedly deserve it. I've been frequenting this bar for after work drinks and have discovered after eating several of there amazing paninis and apps that they undoubtedly have the best caesar salad in town. If I had to compare this place to anything, as cheesy as it may be, it reminds me of cheers. I'm usually there alone and I sometimes feel as if I have ended up with my best friends sitting around the bar. The bartenders treat me as if I'm there sister, (i'd probably get more guys if I even looked half as hot as these girls do) and the locals that frequent the bar act as if I've been friends with them since childhood. For the first time last week I brought my friends with me, they wanted to finally see this bar that I keep hyping about. We went for trivia night. Even though we didn't get that many questions right, the staff was treating us like we were winners and we had such a blast. My friends couldn't believe how great the food is at this bar. After one of my guy friends admitted to wanting pizza from a local pizza joint across the street, I told him to sit down, shut his trap and eat what I ordered for him. So of course I got one of the pizzas. He couldn't believe how pleased he was with the food there, that he ended up taking his friends there last weekend to watch the final four basketball games with his friends. They loved how different the food is here and how great it is to have found a bar that stands out from the usual food they see at sports bars. I really just want to thank Common Ground for the AMAZING SERVICE, AWESOME FOOD, and an all around great experience every time I am there, whether its alone or with my friends. If I had the capital, I'd give the bar owner money to open another bar in every part of manhattan so everyone could experience this wealth of entertainment and fun.

Pros: Ambience, Service

Cons: There isn't a common ground in every neighborhood of the city

I used to love this place! I would recommend it b/c it has the best happy hour. Great specials, awesome food.

But lately every time I have gone in there, the service was horrible! I never write reviews, but I love this place so much and each time it was bad. so i felt it necessary....Every time it has been a different girl, and each time they have been horrible.

They don?t smile, have a bad attitude and it shows. If they hate their job so much, they should get over themselves and not work there anymore. I had to wait 40 minutes the last time I was there for a mozzarella and tomato panini. And they were not that busy. If you are planning to go out to this place, just be wary of the horrible grumpy service and attitude that ruins even the great food and drink. and i am unfortunately not going to recommend it to anyone, anymore....

Had a surprise birthday last night for my girlfriend. This is a place that I've walked past several times but have never popped in to check out. I wish I had done so sooner because this place is great. The staff was very helpful in assisting me with the food selections for my party, based the number of people that arrived. They helped me pick the perfect amount of food, as there was not much extra left over. Price-wise... very easy on the pocket with the happy hour drink and food specials. They were accommodating to my special needs (we brought in a birthday cake and it was served right on time). Dan, the owner, was personally there to make sure everything ran smoothly. I would recommend this place to anyone, and I will certainly be back!! Thank you to everyone at Common Ground for making my special night so comfortable and fun!

I hosted my party at Common Ground on a Friday night. It was an ideal venue and everyone had a blast! I found Common Ground online, and met with Dan, who reserved me the back couch area for my party of 30 (for free!). Everyone was comfortable, it was easy to socialize and talk, the waitress was great, it was easy to get drinks at the bar and the place got busy, but not sardine-packed like so many other great bars in NYC. I would highly recommend having a party at Common Ground.

I had my birthday party at Common Ground this past weekend, and the staff there could not have been better. Dan took care of everything and made me feel right at home and our server, Yale, was incredible!! The food was great and I got a ton of comments of how much my guests enjoyed the party. I most definitely will be back. Between the service, the atmosphere, the food, and just the way this place goes out of it's way to make it the perfect party, Common Ground is simply awesome. Thanks for making my bday a blast CG!!!

I stumbled upon Common Ground a few months ago when scouting locations for a friend's birthday. I decided I HAD to have a Halloween party at this pretty, funky but chill bar/lounge. I am so glad I did. Think of the space as one party chill downtown lounge, one part neighborhood bar, and one part spooky library. This past Saturday, my two friends and I hosted a huge Halloween bash in their "back area" and it was an amazing sucess - I cannot think of one thing this place did wrong! The managers, Dan and Matt, were accommodating from the get-go when I called them two months ago. They gave us great drink specials, hooked us up with tasty food (the paninis are a must-try!) and gave us a great space! Yale, the server that worked our party ALL BY HERSELF was unbelievable! I don't think anyone waited more that 5-10 minutes for a drink, and this girl was serving upwards of 70 people at one point! Kudos to Common Ground. I can't wait to check this place out on a "normal" night - they do fun stuff like trivia night and open mike nights, I think. Bravo, CG. You made our Halloween party a great sucess. I would highly recommend checking this fun, chill bar out. Good vibes, good food, and great people.

Pros: GREAT Service, tasty food, good selection of beers

Cons: Did you read my review? There aren't any!

Spend most of my time in the East Village. Now that I found this place I'll spend all my time in the East Village. Great crowd, fun staff, and amazing food. With all the dirty dives on Ave A, this place is such a great find.

Pros: Great mix of attractive people, food, ambiance

Cons: Can get too crowded on the weekends

.

Avenue A has so many dive bars and run of mill establishments. This place really stands out as a unique find. Even though it looks trendy and hip, it's totally chill and fun. The employees are totally cool, and the food is great. Only drawback is that it can get really crowded on the weekends and on Wed. for trivia. Oh yeah, the jukebox is amazing!!!

Fell into Common Ground and could only stand to remain at the bar for 1 drink-- doesn't do justice to Ave A and a far cry from a "cool hangout." Not sure if the previous reviews were posted by the owner and employees, but find such enthusiastic reviews of this place hard to believe. Decor is way to clean and fancy for neighborhood. board games seem to destroy the concept of a bar-- who wants to play a game of clue rather than get drunk? Well suited for the totally nerdy crowd, awkward guy behind the bar, and not worth visiting. Try "Drop-off Service" on next corner instead.

If you frequent open mics, you know that there is alotta garbage out there. Hey, they're open mics, that's what happens. But this one is definitely a cut above the rest. The quality of musicians is extremely high, and they actually let you play more than three songs. That is not common. Out of all the open mics I've attentended there so far, there was only one sucky performer, and I only saw him once. Maybe someone cued him in on what he sounds like. The last few times there have been a bunch of solid musicians playing, and lots of original music. This is the place to hear some new and upcoming NYC musicians, as most are probably frusrated with corrupt nyc booking agents. There's no cover charge, and the Common Ground is definitely the nicest hangout in the East Village, with good drink prices and awesome food. So as you wait and muster up the courage to get "onstage", have a few of their famous drinks and a panini (they ROCK!). Oh, and by the way, I was informed that the ONLY bad review below was written by a bitter ex-employee, someone that was not cool enough to blend in with the incredible staff that keeps this place kickin. Go check it out for yourself... you will not be disappointed.

Pros: great food, drinks, value

Cons: someone putting on a crappy song on what is normally a great jukebox

great addition to this up and coming neighborhood (the next chelsea?). nice/interesting menu with panini, which you dont normally see as bar fare (i'm sick of buffalo wings). exotic drink menu (they even have grapefruit juice in individual cans - quality!!) and great staff. i mostly go there for the board games (and to get drunk), but its a good pick-up place as well.

Was here the other night with some friends and had a great time. The food they have is real good and the drink list is intereesting too. It's a nice change for the area and I'll bring people here again. Good mix of people.

Not a bad place, though not great. Trivia night is fetid; avoid it because the crowd is completely lame. Otherwise, it's a good place to go on off hours as the bartenders are good and prices extremely reasonable.

I can't believe it's taken me so long to write a review on what is my FAVORITE bar! I'm probably a bit biased, being that I live very close, and this is a very comfortable and inviting neighborhood bar. The staff is amazing. Again, I am now biased since I've proudly made friends w/ them all, but even the very first time in there I couldn't believe how friendly everyone was. The owner will sit at the bar and shoot the sh#t w/ ya, and the (attractive) bartenders will never let your glass go empty. The jukebox ROCKS! Plenty of tunes to choose from. They are now doing "theme" nights, like Bingo and Trivia, which is actually alot of fun. I was the first to think it would be corny, but it really isn't. Prizes are free drinks, so you can't go wrong. The interior of Common Ground is very comfortable and inviting, as I mentioned before, but also kinda fancy looking, with a big wooden bar, chandeliers and comfy couches front and rear. But don't let that fanciness fool you, cause this is definitely a place to let loose. Very laid-back and chill during the weeknights, and hoppin' on the weekends. Can get kinda crowded, but never to an annoying level. Oh.... they even have open mic night (every sunday) now! You really have to check this place out, although I fear that I have now invited all the people that DON'T know about it, which is what keeps this place so cool. Oh well.

Cool place for a few (or a lot of) drinks with friends. Usually has a good crowd and good looking girls. Each day has different drink specials too, good for keeping the tab within reason. They've got a couple of flat screens for games as well.

Just tried this but don't think it worked. Was just here on Thursday night and had a great time. Great food and drinks (expertely prepared by my new favorite nyc bartender Sara...gorgeeous too) They even have bored games if sara gets busy back there and can't joke around with you. Everything was reasonably priced and the music was good too. Will be back for many Thursdays to come

The staff here is really great and REALLY attractive. The owner came on a little strong. He should take a day off now and then. Deceptively expensive. I've walked out of there broke and sober many a time.

Came here on a Thursday around 10 p.m. with my girlfriend. The place was pretty empty. They do have a lot of board games to play if that's your thing although the music can get pretty loud trying to hear the other person. They have a couple of flat screens for sports viewing and they have the MLB Package. The staff is for the most part friendly. Drinks are affordable and they have numerous specials (on Thursdays, domestic bottles were $3.00). It seems to draw a mid 20 to late 20's crowd. Not a bad place. Sticks out a bit because it looks nice as opposed to all of the dives on Avenue A.

How on earth did Common Ground ever end up on Avenue A? That's got to be one of the greatest mysteries of 2006.

The bar itself is nothing more than a glorified sports bar. Very clean, very new- it wouldn't be out of place in the corner of the Garden State Plaza. Not exactly your dad's Alphabet City.

I stopped in on a Saturday night, and it was crowded, but not annoyingly so. We found a table off the bar, and watched as the stripped shirt crews wandered by and Bon Jovi blasted from the speakers (no joke).. two beers later, we moved on..

Stopped by Wednesday night. Front of the bar was filled with about 15 people and a bit loud. But headed to the back and was able to find comfortable seating and was much more quiet. Our cocktail waitress was v. nice and attentive (rare in nyc), even the barback/bus boy was v. nice - esp. greeting us. The design is beautiful and nicely out of place for Ave. A. They also have all sorts of board games to play. The bar also didn't have the dingy smell of a bar.... It smelled clean and fresh... Not sure what they do but it adds the all the senses. This isn't my "type" of lounge - but I really enjoyed my experience and will come back again. Only draw back was the TVs... I understand why they have it but it really cheapens the place.

First of all this is my first review and this bar was the main reason i signed up! After going there this past weekend I just had to sign up and write a review! Very friendly service and the atmosphere so much fun. It was St. Patty's day so a bit crowded but that's to be expected. Drink prices didnt kick you in the butt either. Finally I liked the menu; a break from the normal bar food that you normally see! Overal a great experiance and totally would recommend it!

We only needed to wait awhile before we could find a nice table in the back. Table? Well, not exactly. It was a trunk. The waitress was a bit cold at first, seemingly beat from the rag-tag crew just leaving. She warmed up as our bill got larger. The busboy-- maybe the only one in New York whose first language is English-- was extremely friendly right from the get-go. Maybe it had something to do with my being with three attractive Japanese women and no one else. I don't know. But we enjoyed his company. The other patrons were friendly with none of the nose-in-the air you expect these days in the East Village. The music was not overpowering. The 7 glasses of Magic Hat were. --Drink Club is a roving group of NYC drinkers

Not to sound redundant on the previous reviews, but this place is definitely worth a look. The ambiance is perfect for a relaxed Friday night, when you're not looking to fight for 20 minutes to get a drink. Very good service, nice social scene, and overall a good experience. I'll definitely check Common Ground out again in the future.

Dear Citysearch,

I never thought this would happen to me...but I came across a bar in NYC that had good drink prices, reasonable food, and a good jukebox. There was no cover, no pretension, and no sawdust on the floor. I reccomend the Tomato, Mozzerella and Prosciutto panini.

common ground is extremely comfortable bar with good food, friendly service, warm and tasteful decor. A friend and I decided to stop in to this new place in the village and ended up having a great time. We selected beers from the wide selection on tap and Bogle from the collection of games in the book shelf. and in no time we had met some new friends that wanted to play with us. The bartenders and waitresses made us feel at home and the prices were quite reasonable.

Don't let the gorgeous, lush interior turn you away -- this is NOT an overpriced, overhyped "lounge." Common Ground is simply a great East Village bar with the good sense to not look and smell like the bathroom at CBGB's. (It looks like a late 19th century American mansion, replete with canvas-bound books and chandeliers.)

The staff is awesome (the beauty of the interior is only rivaled by that of the waitresses), and the owner is usually lurking around to make sure everyone is having a good time.

Bonuses: Board Games, Naked Photo Hunt, and a killer jukebox.

In Short
Were it not for the inherent modesty of the neighborhood, the crystal chandeliers, chocolate woods and shelves of leather-bound books might make this East Village bar seem high-falutin'. Instead, a warm, comfortable air…
