I love having a great neighborhood French Bistro just around the corner. The mussels and mushroom ravioli are my personal favorites and the staff is very warm and attentive.

Pros: Cozy, warm and delicious.

Cons: What are the drawbacks?

Went there with a party of four. We were all very pleased with the quality of food. In New York there are so many restaurants to try that it takes excellent food and service for me to want to go back a second time. This restaurant makes me want to come back. The salads / apps were excellent. My entree was really outstanding. Had the sole and rice just prepared to perfection. Desert for me was rice pudding with bluberries and carmel. One of the best I ever had. Prices are also reasonable. Really enjoyed it.

Love it! Feel like you're in Paris. Steak-frites to die for and a lovely flourless chocolate cake are my favorites. Simple, good food with some surprising sophistication. It is consistently good and service bends over backwards to make feel welcome. Lunch is also a treat here - health salad and croque madame are two good choices.

This was my first French dining experience in the city. I wanted to try a restaurant from the citysearch list and my friend wanted to try a french restaurant. I choose this place because the online menu looked good.

Tables are roomed very close together, so close that my seat kept getting bumped by the person behind me. Food was pretty good (good in the sense that I already knew that I wanted to come back) and service okay.

Met a friend here recently because he had a City Shuffle Diner's Deck coupon. What a delightful place to check out! For starters, we split the savory white sausage/apple salad appetizer. I enjoyed the free range chicken for my dinner, it was flavored nicely & perfectly cooked, as was the accompanying asparagus & fettuccine - delicious! The wine was good, the service warm & accommodating, the ambiance charming. Tucked away on First Avenue like a well-kept secret (especially from those who don't live nearby & have to schlep from the Lex subway like me), this place is worth returning to!

Cafe Joul is truly a remarkable restaurant. This French bistro has everything going for it. This is a small neighborhood place, well known locally for its ambiance and great food. Picture the interior of Balthazar but smaller, charming and romantic. The food is really really good - typical bistro but outstanding in taste and presentation. The owner/chef is always on the ball and really delivers a superb meal. The duck main course is excellent as is the chicken, accompanied by lemon fettucini and grilled leeks. Also, the nightly specials can't be beat. Weekend brunch is also a favorite - the place gets filled up pretty quickly on a Sunday morning! Heidi, the manager, is always available and makes sure that everyone is comfortably taken care of. The small bar exudes charm and can be used to dine at as well. The atmosphere can be quite romantic with dimmed lighting, period furnishings, and walls filled with original artwork. All in all, Cafe Joul is a neighborhood gem, good for a casual meal or for a special night out as well. It is worth a trip from anywhere in the city.

Likes: The casual environment, and the well-prepared food. The menu is extensive and the seafood dishes are caught that day! This would be a great place to both take a date and take your mom.

Dislikes: Expensive.

In a neighborhood that otherwise lacks luster on the dining front, Cafe Joul is a brilliant jewel. Zero pretension, the focus here is the FOOD. It's very good, in fact suprisingly good given the casual feel of the downtownish decor. No vertical dishes here or flavored foams, just darn good basic bistro fare that seems to be more and more difficult to find these days. Service is always pleasant with a warm welcome on each and every visit. This is our go-to place when we have visitors who always request a return visit before their departure. Try the fish specials, the mussels, goat cheese pizza with bibb or my favorite the fish cassoulet (call first to reserve one- they always run out.) Our friends rave about the burger. Only complaint is that they don't take reservations of tables fewer than five after 8pm or so. It's always busy, but we find the wait time to be brief most evenings and worth it!

Cafe Joul is my go-to restaurant in my mid-town east side neighborhood. My favorite dishes are The French Onion Soup (the best in Manhattan), the duck (wonderful), and the flourless chocolate cake (out of this world). In fact, all the food is really great. The restaurant is French, but the atmosphere is relaxed. As important, the prices are quite reasonable. I highly recommend this gem.

I went there with friends last week, and I had such a relaxing lunch! The space itself is quiet and cozy - just like a little French bistro! All of the dishes we ordered were superb - the burger was delicious, and the mussels were just right! We had the roasted eggplant soup du jour to start, and it was one of the best soups I have ever eaten! On top of that, we were well-taken care of by our hostess and waitress, despite the fact that she was the only one there at the time. The first time I went, for dinner, the whole staff took care of us in a friendly and down-to-earth manner. It couldn't be a better place to eat!

This was a cute, quaint bistro and the food was spectacular. We went this past Friday night and the lemon sole and salmon were fantastic. We didn't originally want to try the burger (yes, burger!) but it was very gourmet and tasty. Service on the other hand, was horrible. The girl who originally took our food and bar order was good, but the guy who was our waiter was awful. He dropped off the food and never checked on us because he was too busy chatting with other tables or eating his own dinner at the bar. The busser stopped by more times than he did and we finally had to ask him for water refills and then coffee after dinner. The waiter FINALLY came by and just asked us if we needed anything else...didn't even offer dessert. He almost ruined what could have been a flawless dinner.

This is the perfect restaurant for anyone wanting an authentic French bistro experience with a wonderfully friendly waitstaff. Each customer is treated with respect and warmth. We are fast becoming regulars and are planning on taking our French friends when in town. Don't forget to order one of the superb desserts.

I discovered this place thanks to my girlfriend, treated her to a birthday surprise here, and now we're married (and come back often). I'm not suggesting the place will make you fall in love with each other, but it's a great romantic date spot. Or come on your own and sit at the bar - the staff is charming and friendly, they're always pouring generous glasses of good wine, and the food is excellent. Recommended: endive salad with manchego, white mushroom salad, top-notch burger with caramelized onions, and a cheese-and-quince plate that is always a favorite.

I have been living in the area for about 4 years and I can always count on Cafe Joul for an excellent dining experience, whether it's a quiet dinner for 2 or a with larger group of friends. The food is consistently delicious and the staff is always extremely friendly and accommodating. Also a tasty spot for weekend brunch!

Every time I dine at Cafe Joul I can't believe how good the food is. All the ingredients are very fresh, and the combinations of them are so elegant. It doesn't matter whether you are having some oatmeal with baked apples and cranberries, or a beet salad with amazing house dressing, you will want to come back for more.
Many wines are organic, and taste great. The service is very good, the waiting staff is always there when you need them, the atmosphere is very relaxed, and romantic. I'm taking my friends there next week!

I have been a steady customer since the first night of Cafe Joul's opening. I know that when I walk in I'll get a warm welcome, a table as fast as possible, or a place at the bar. the chef has a fabulous knowledge of the freshest ingredients. The combinations he creates are never scary or bizarre, and comfortably filling. I love the movies that are shown on a big screen on weekend nights, and salute the owners for their creative thinking. I wish that they would restart the book club, because the warm and homey atmosphere makes it so comfy to drink great wines, nibble on some great cheeses, and discuss interesting books. One of my favorite places.

Great service, great food, warm and causal atmopshere. Best burger and bouillabaise in New York City, Kids shared a lobster ravioli dish that had them asking for more all week. Reminds me of wonderful, small restaurants in France that you find everywhere where the food is always relaible and service always good. Not to miss for a special occasion or everyday dining.

Perfect menu, perfect ambience, delightful and attentive service and always wonderful food. I go often as a local and love to bring out-of-town friends, who are impressed with my pick. Wine selection is good - - decently priced and generally very interesting and thoughtfully chosen cellar.

When in need of a hamburger fix, this is the one to have. There is no better. Excellent meat, there's a chutney on it, and perfect brioche/roll. Fries are unforgettable, but Cafe Joul is also more than willing to substitute a vegetable and the sauteed spinach is my favorite.

Also a good place to go solo and sit at the bar for dinner.

EXTREMELY BAD SERVICE! Five friends and I went to Cafe Joul for Sunday brunch on 3/11/2007 and were disappointed with both average food and extraordinarily poor service. Our orders were very slow to come to the table, which would have been perfectly acceptable given the size of our party and the Sunday brunch rush, but the waitress also made a mistake with one of the orders and said the kitchen would have to re-cook it. She barely shrugged off an apology, and certainly didn't offer our friend any extra bread or another drink while he waited, so he sat there with an empty place in front of him while the rest of us had our food for over 15 minutes. At the end of the meal, we decided to leave a 10% tip rather than our usual 15-20%. Stunningly, the waitress and her manager actually confronted us on our way out, exclaiming that they "tried their best given how hard it is to wait tables," and "even if we didn't have a good experience, it's still not right to walk out without leaving a tip." Of course, we *did* leave a tip, just a smaller tip than usual, but the waitress and her manager didn't count the bills on the table correctly. After pointing out their error, however, the manager still felt the need to confront us about the size of the tip, and in front of other patrons, no less. It boggles the mind that these are people who make their living in food service, and that they assume 20% tip is given and not earned. We will certainly never be back.

So many thing to love about this small place:great wine list, food, a value, ect. What to watch out for are busy days. We'd gone there for brunch, after going many times looking forward to having eggs benidict w/ smoked salmon. They refussed to do it that morning telling us that the kitchen won't substitute that day. Four of five people in our group wanted that dish, so we left. None of that group wants to return.

The $19 prix fix brunch on the weekends is the best value around. The free Mimosa/Bloody Mary isn't the best but it's well made up for by the basket of fresh pastries and carrot bread and the fantastic egg dishes. Tables are close together but that's part of the French bistro atmosphere. The service is very fast and attentive but you may have to wait for a seat if you come at peak brunch hours.

Superlative bistro food in a deceptively casual setting. The menu relies mainly on creative interpretations of the French classics, and each is prepared with that elusive combination of richness and lightness that separates the best restaurants in France from their salt-and-butter-prone American imitators. The seafood cassoulet and the venerable Tarte Tatin, in particular, are outstanding. The wine list is well designed, with an unusual number of the best selections available by the glass. Don't be fooled by the low-key appearance, Cafe Joul offers some of the best and most authentic French food you will find in the city.

The food is absolutely delcious at Cafe Joul. I have never been let down. My favorite is the lemon sole but I also love trying their other fish specials. My husband loves the steak and fries. (I have to admit, I always sneak a few of the fries myself, as they are the best fries I have ever tatsed.) The recipes show great creativity and the preparation is alwasy very attractive. It is always a delight to eat there. The waiters are friendly and knowledgable. I also enjoy their Sunday brunches, in particular the incredible crab cakes.

This is one of the best finds in Manhattan. An unassuming French Bistro with great (and I really mean great) food. Casual atmosphere. Each menu choice is better than the last. Don't miss this restaurant. Far better food than the stuffy, fancy French restaurants of midtown, at reasonable prices. You'll be glad you stopped by.

On a recent trip to New York, I had the pleasure of dining at Cafe Joul. I can honestly say that it was the best meal that Ive had in years. The dishes were simply prepared with fresh, natural ingredients and a wonderful blend of flavors. The ingredients were blended in a way that was not overpowering, but were made a chef with a masterful hand. The prices were moderate for fine dining, and although the restaurant is relatively small, it was easy to have a quiet conversation even though the tables are fairly close together. It has a casual elegance. I highly recommend a trip to Cafe Joul and will definitely return when I am next in the city.

We found Cafe Joul through friends and after our first meal there we knew we had found the perfect bistro. It has everything you'd expect from a classic French bistro, but the sophisticated but simple variations on the menu make the food delightful as well as satisfying. The onion soup was the best my wife and I have ever had. We've since gone back time and again for romantic dinners, outings with friends, even with my mother-in-law on more than one occasion. Heartily recommended for any occasion, or any time your want a real taste of France.

We have been to Cafe Joul many times having had romantic dinners for two, and on our most recent visit, a small gathering of seven. This special place works brilliantly both ways! All seven in our party were totally delighted with every aspect of last nights dinner. Superb, classic bistro fare (rave reviews of the fish specials, venison and pear tartin in particular), warm atmosphere, and fun to boot! As always, the wait staff was not only attentive, but genuinely nice. The prices were more than fair. Cafe Joul is a sure bet whatever the occasion!

As always, the wait staff was not only attentive, but genuinely nice. The prices were more than fair. Cafe Joul is a sure bet whatever the occasion!

We had such a wonderful meal at this lovely restaurant. We were a party of 8 people. The service was great, the food was fabulous-each dish was so special. The beet salad is highly recommended, along with the fish dishes, also the person who ordered the steak was very, very happy. The desserts were also delicious. Atmosphere - lovely! We will return to this excellent restaurant!

I went to Cafe Joul based on the recommendation of a friend of mine who waitresses there. My boyfriend and I didn't really know what to expect of the restaurant, but we ended up have a great night out. Everything we ate -- from appetizer to dessert was tasty and pleasantly presented. Unfortunately, when sometimes asking for wine recommendations you don't get all that knowledgable staff. However, the woman running the bar on this night seemed very familiar with their collection and was able to guide us in the right direction. My only complaint is the somewhat tight space, but that is to be expected in Manhattan restaurants. The black and white film playing in the background was an unexpected, pleasant touch.

My friends and I are big fans of this cozy and quaint bistro. Cool paintings, warm candlelight, and fabulous wines by the glass keep us coming back for more. Not to mention that the food is divine!! I'm glad this restaurant is a quick ride away and not all the way downtown.

Here's a place for very good French food; everything has been good, especially the specials. What we like best, though, is that it is friendly and comfortable. You don't feel like you are in one of those more formal places, but the food is just as good (if not better). The chef is apparently the owner, so he's seems to always be in the kitchen. And the prices are good; not cheap, but less than you pay elsewhere. Our out-of-town guests have ALWAYS been impressed! and they don't chase you out

Friendly, delicious and comfortable, Cafe Joul has become a regular dining spot and a place for special occassions for my partner and me. I've taken most of my friends and they have returned on their own often. My favorite dish is the ravioli with truffle sauce - light sweet and delicious. The warm chocalte cake is also amazing. Go soon and you'll go often.

Friday movie nights are also good fun - classic silent movies

Cafe Joul is a jewel of a French bistro on the upper east side. Friendliness and excellent food abound thanks to an accommodating staff and the superb efforts of Heidi and husband chef Bertrand. A loyal following makes one feel as if one were dining with friends at home. Works of local artists adorn the walls further enhancing the experience. I have been going to Cafe Joul for years now and have never been even slightly disappointed. For this neighborhood, one gets high-quality, fresh food at an excellent value. The seafood cassoulet is to die for!

Cafe Joul is one of my all-time favorite restaurants in Manhattan. I am always amazed at how wonderful the food is (original, delicious plates, beautiful presentation. I especially love the lemon sole.) and how reasonable the prices are for Manhattan and the high quality of the food. I love the ambiance as well. Feels like you are in a funky French bistro, surrounded by modern art, but with none of the pretension. Very high on my list of recommendations!

This is one of our main "go to" restaurants whether we have friends in from out of town, or want a quiet enjoyable delicious meal for just the two of us. We have gotten to know the husband/wife team that run the restaurant, and love the food and the wine list. The service is great too. A real find for us.

I have lived near Cafe Joul for 5 years and this place has always been special. I went there as it just opened and getting on its feet, and while it has become more "established," it hasn't lost its home-y neighbourhood feel. The service has always been consistently good, with attentive, friendly waitstaff. The wild mushroon ravioli, croque monsieur (at lunch) and even the burgers/fries (which in spite of my lion appetite I can never finish) are wonderful. On 9/11 this place was the ONLY place in the neighbourhood that stayed open, and not only was at its peak service at max capacity, but also donated all its profits that evening to the WTC victims. Even though I have been there many times, I just went back last night and finally thought to write this review!

I really don't care for the upper east side, so if I have to go up there, I reward myself with cafe joul. It is a little gem, bright and cheery with the most up beat, friendly and adorable waitresses. The food is MAGNIFICENT, all the wonders of french cuisine without being to heavy...how they do it, I don't know, I don't care, as long as they keep feeding my their sweet delights!

I hardly ever venture above 14th Street for food...but this little bistro is well worth the trek uptown. The food is amazing for the price. The best burger in town...hands down! Also- try the seafood cassoulet, so very tasty. They have a very friendly waitstaff & they show black & white movies on Friday & Saturday nights. Great little spot for a date.

Cafe Joul is the perfect blend of fine food and romantic ambiance. This is the ideal date restaurant when you want to impress the girl/guy of your dreams. While the food is the real star of this beautifully appointed cafe, so are you as a guest of Cafe Joul with the most attentive and friendly waitstaff in the area. The prices are most reasonable and the value is as they say, ginormous! The desserts are divine and decadent and not to be missed. In one word, Yum!

this one has potential! A casual, relaxing atmosphere makes this a very enjoyable experience. While it was our first time there, and we only had salad and two entrees, the menu is diverse enough to make you want to come back and sample more. The burger was great but a pork tenderloin dish was only passable (sauce was bland.) However, the couple next to us were commenting about "outstanding" mussels and the chicken dish looked appealing. Given the excellent, friendly service and a broader menu than most bistros, we'll definitely try it again.

I live 3 blocks from this place and sometimes that seems like too much! The food was outstanding, the service was kind, attentive, and knowledgeable and the space is too romantic to convey in this space. Well-priced, great tasting dishes will send you back for a second taste. Try the cheeses and desserts the first time around, great liquor list to boot.

I have never been disappointed at Cafe Joul. You are certain to find fresh, high quality food here. The neighborhood keeps this place a secret, so I've heard; they don't want outsiders taking their tables.
I'll happily spread the word though. Try the mussels or goat cheese pizza salad. Daily fish specials are always delicious. Best cassoulet I've had outside of Toulouse too!

I had the pleasure of dining at Cafe Joul recently and had a wonderful time. The service was friendly and the food was delicately flavored and the taste shone through. No trip would be complete without sampling the flourless chocolate cake!
