5 Stars: A gem (by db1647)

I'm far from a hard core foodie but my date and I both thoroughly enjoyed our meals and the overall experience for dinner here on a busy Friday night. With an 8:30 reservation, we were promptly seated; the host and wait staff were friendly, informative and effecient; the noise level was relatively quiet; the space was properly lit (not bright) and romantic. And the food, incl. escargot, duck confit and the steak, was wonderful. Factor in the upbeat yet unpretentious vibe, and I will certainly be back.

5 Stars: Great everything (by chivali)

I love this place. I usually go alone and I like sitting in the front by the bar. Oysters are always fresh and amazing. Big pour on the wine. Food is always good and they will accomodate your requests to remove or add ingredients to a dish. Staff always greets you with a smile. True it is small but it doesn't feel cramped like other places in the area. They don't try to fit in just one more table. They keep it comfortable.

5 Stars: Vive la Provence (by TheChampagneReview)

Need a French Cassolet on a cold night to warm the soul - there's none more delicious in NYC. We stumbled into this French restaurant one freezing night to find the most comforting food; the warmest host;s and the friendliest and most knowledgeable set of staff - truly devine from start to finish. The wine pairing was spot-on (and inexpensive). Even though I claim to be an expert in seafood- these crabcakes made me weep with joy. I never determined their unfamiliar spice- but it was pefect harmony with the crab. My partners steak frites were half the cost of the previous night's with twice as much spirit and taste. For an inexpensive, yet intimate and delicious night out - Ca c'est magnifique.

4 Stars: Romantic Dining (by jwaters77)

this restaurant serves truly delicious food in a fantastic, personal atmosphere. I would recommend this for couples. If you are looking for a Monkey Night Out with friends, probably not a good option. But for a little romance, and some great vittles, this is a top choice.

4 Stars: Great For Special Occasions.. (by moyabff)

Le Gigot is one of my favorite restaurants in NY. I've dined here many times with my partner and always walk away satisfied. I've enjoyed every meal I've had there. I especially recommend them for their wine selection and terrific service. Great for special occasions.

4 Stars: Good Atmosphere and Fantastic Food (by JESSEE28)

A classic old-fashioned restaurant with great service, tons of atmosphere and fantastic food. We've been there several times, and every single thing we've ordered has been awesome. The chocolate cake with creme Anglaise was superb. We were absolutely positive we couldn't eat another bite until we got a whiff of that chocolatey goodness. Ate every bite. We usually are celebrating when we go there, so we order appetizers, entree, dessert and wine AND cocktails, and spend about $250. Its not cheap, but its not as pricey as one of those molecular gastronomy places.

4 Stars: Wonderful French Dinner (by dr602)

My husband, brother and I went to Le Gigot for dinner and enjoyed our dinner. Our waiter was excellent, pacing out our meal so nicely. Everything was delicious, from the lobster salad and escargot to the duck confit and chocolate dessert. Even though the room was extremely tiny, we never felt crowded at our table. I would definitely recommend and return to Le Gigot.

4 Stars: Great Food but only takes Amex. (by malexan)

I have to say the food and service is amazing, and the atmosphere is exactly what a nice quant restaurant should be. The one thing that people should be aware of is that they take either Amex or Cash and that is it. It is really easy to rack-up a bill of over 200 so make sure that you bring the correct payment option. There are a bunch of ATMs near.

1 Stars: "Not Baby Friendly" (by echoisy)

We have a 10-month baby. We tried to have a Sunday Brunch there around 1pm in early January 2008. The hostess was rude and after 10 minutes wait, she didn't want to give us a table and said "they were not baby friendly", even though the restaurant was empty.

I would not go back there and would not recommend this place

5 Stars: perfect for many occasions (by dhobson12)

Flexibility and quality (rather than tasteless quantity) here seem to be key: Firstly, the food: the kitchen seems talented, and even 'basic' veg seems to have a special effect of herbs and spices - perhaps its the head chef's senagalese influence (according to a regular I chatted to) that really makes the difference. in a city of overblown food menus (how many flavours do you need with one dessert?) the food does nt have to be complicated: in my view, in simple well prepared dishes bad ingredients are harder to hide. At le Gigot the simple, but such high quality dishes shine through. For example, a beautiful lobster salad, heirloom tomato salad, killer frites, or just the great berries and sorbet make a nice, but well prepared change. I cant be wrong - the bar always seems busy with repeat regulars in what seems to be a competitive part of town. There are too many good dishes I've tried to name but there really does seem to be an emphasis on quality, locally sourced organic ingredients (According to the wait staff) - and you can taste the difference, I think.
On seating, everyone is different: dining alone, the bar seems very social (if you want). Sitting there, its interesting to watch the two side-by-side tables behind the bar get rejected a lot (although some repeat guests seem to demand them too!): However, having tried them, there's more space, and in a sense they are better for side-by-side dates - if that's what you want.
All in all, this is nt a place for showy meals, or stuffy service. what it does seem to have is a loyal following, and I'm starting to see why: A focus of quality ingredients (if they cant source a product, it seems they wont take second best, and just not serve it that day), well-presented food and relaxed but precise service. bottom line - you get what you pay for: if you like brash, 'be seen there' meat packing mega-restos this is nt for you. If you like good cooking, well presented by a chirpy team of staff, then this might be it.

5 Stars: an absolute gem. wonderful food and delightful service. (by loungegal)

I'm so glad I finally made it out to Le Gigot...it's a gem of a spot tucked away on Cornelia...and it felt worlds away from the fray of Manhattan. Our server, Jay, achieved perfection -- professional yet completely at ease and affable. Why can't more servers be like him, seriously?

My friend and I split the charcuterie plate to start (except for the okra, which was a little odd, everything on the plate was scrumptious eaten whole or smeared on baguette). We then ordered the steak au poivres and the duck confit for our entrees -- absolutely perfect bistro food. Straightforward, simply and honestly prepared, and almost overwhelmingly good. The garlic/leek mashed potatoes are to die for! And our meal on a lovely high note with ginger creme brulee and warm chocolate cake. We are looking forward to our next dinner with Le Gigot!!!

5 Stars: Personalized Service (by dashiell)

Two buddies and I enjoyed a birthday brunch on June 3rd and everything was top notch save for a lack of ice in my cranberry juice and a decaffeinnated cappachino being brought to the table before brunch was served. The waiter was pleasant and professional -- the food delicious and attractively presented. Two of us decided on the brioche bread in creme anglaise for dessert and the waiter must have read our minds because he recommended it to us just seconds before we ordered (mine came with a sparkler inserted into a giant strawberry to mark my birthday). This is a small restaurant with maybe ten tables maximum and we suspect a hidden gem on Cornelia Street that has a regular clientele but is not much known outside of the neighborhood -- and it should stay that way. One can tell a fine restaurant by its bathroom and Le Gigot's was clean and attractively decorated with a stylish touch of white washclothes in lieu of paper towels. Hey, when we leave a $2.00 bill as part of the overall tip that means the waiter is special and the restaurant is special. We know that $2.00 bills are lucky omens. We will be back, Le Gigot with more $2.00 bills and hungry appetites.

1 Stars: Shockingly Rude Service (by moda119)

I made a reservation at Le Gigot to celebrate my birthday with my boyfriend. When we arrived (on time), however, we discovered that our reserved table was situated near the door and set up so that we were forced to sit next to each other on a bench looking straight ahead at the bar. Not exactly conducive to conversation. I asked if we could have a table where we could face each other and was told one would be available in 5 minutes.

.....30 minutes of waiting later, we were "warned" by the hostess that another reservation would be in an hour and a half -- so we would need to be done and out by then. A time limit for dinner? Even when we had reservations? I was shocked. And when I said we were leaving, the hostess looked incredulous at my complaint, feigning amazement at the idea that her comment had been rude. I cannot comment on the food, but the attitude was so far from accommodating or even civil that I felt compelled to write a negative review. What a shame.

5 Stars: Amazing spot for romantic dinner (by kayomat)

I stumbled upon this wonderful place by chance about four years ago, and it has become my favorite special occasion restaurant. The ambience is warm, charming, and very romantic. The waiters are very patient, knowledgeable, and professional. Everything on the menu is delicious! I especially love the escargot, lamb chop, and seared tuna. I like to get the tuna rare to medium rare, and ask for lemon on the side. It is a very narrow space with about 20 seats, so I would recommend going there as a couple or as a small group up to 4 people. I went there for brunch some time ago and it was rather empty, but weekend reservation is a must for dinner.

5 Stars: Stunning for brunch (by guillame)

The two of us shared a cozy little table for Sunday brunch and loved every bite. The Prix Fixe menu was outstanding value - espresso coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice, and a brunch dish (I had the eggs benedict) for only $15. The service was divine - polite, friendly and very quick. We thought it was a find when we first arrived as no-one was there, but within 15 minutes every table had been taken. Ce magnifique!

3 Stars: Mediocre at BEST (by oshioshi)

Took my friend for dinner to celebrate his birthday - we ordered crabcakes, steak frites, and lamb. Crabcakes were excellent, however steak and lamb were okay - certainly not worth the price they were charging. The chocolate cake was also okay...nothing spectacular. I have had better chocolate cakes for half the price.
That said, the ambiance is cute and cozy and staff provided excellent service.
The bill came to $110 for 3 courses , which I guess is reasonable for French cuisine. But I will not be going back.

5 Stars: Fantastic Location, food and service (by marianyc)

Best French in NYC! The mixed green salad was the best! It was a bed of soft, fresh, baby mixed greens with an extremely light and refreshing, cool dressing. Not overwheling! The Crab cake appetizer also had a small mixed green salad on the side! It was over- flowing with crab! It could not stay put together! The main meal I had Steak and Paum Frittes! Perfectly cooked to order and a real rustic, misquite taste to the steak! Fantastic! The fries were thin and mostly crispy and lightly salted! Fantastic food! Perfect location in the heart of Greenwhich! Our waiter was the best part of our meal! 1 waiter for all 12 tables, and we still felt like we were his only customers! He recommened a fantastic french white wine, and struck a very pleasant and extremely friendly conversation with him! I felt like we were truly welcome there!

5 Stars: Best on Cornelia (by jlmcdona)

I have been visiting Le Gigot since the week it opened several years ago. Even after I left NYC, I visited whenever I came back to visit. It is about the best French food for the price in Lower Manhattan. The service is terrific, the chef turns out consistently wonderful food (I love the Duck Confit) and the wine is carefully selected. Always recommend to friends.

5 Stars: Best Bistro in NYC (by dianawheeler)

At the risk of letting the word out, Le Gigot is a must. While the atmosphere is charming and the service gracious, it is the food that draws us back. The French onion soup is the best in the US (and France), but don't overlook the butternut squash/crayfish and mushroom/roasted garlic soups. Once you sample the crab cakes, you will be disappointed with them anywhere else. The fava bean salad with smoked gouda, walnuts and chive olive oil can't be beat. Plenty of other tasty salads to choose from. My husband rarely tears himself away from the roasted chicken with garlic mashed potatoes. The steak frites is a classic. The fish selections are always fresh. The attention paid to each plate that leaves the kitchen is clear. The chef has a wonderful sense of favor which is reflected throughout the menu. Le Gigot is a favorite of ours!

5 Stars: My Favorite Restaurant in NY (by chazirving)

Le Gigot has become my favorite New York restaurant. The food is consistently excellent, the ambience is perfect and the price range for the quality that you get makes it one of the best values. The crab cakes are the best Ive had anywhere and are no doubt made with the highest quality fresh crab meat and no bread filler The soups are always exceptional and the salads are delicious. They make a light salad dressing which I believe is made with some sort of fig reduction which is outstanding. The meat dishes are equally exceptional. Be sure to try it for lunch or brunch too. The eggs benedict are the best in NY. And the pre-fix brunch prices make it one of the best deals around. Just go, you will love it.

I come back to this place every few months for the last 4 years and I've never had a bad experience. The food is always exquisite and unlike the usual french fare, it is never too greasy or heavy. The service is wonderful, the place itself is cozy and romantic without being cheesy. Best dish I've tried there yet is the Lobster Risotto. Oh, and the lunches there are great..especially Salad Nicoise!

5 Stars: Parfait! (by adrianjo)

Le Gigot made me feel like I had stumbled into some magical back alley of Montparnasse where everyone speaks English. The receptionist greeted us as if we were old friends, and the unpretentious little dining room put my date at ease after a stressful week. Service was impeccable, but the waiter had trouble keeping our wineglasses from running out. The small winelist has bottles in the $40 range. I recommend the flambe desert (which of course the waiter lights on fire on the table). Make a reservation and bring cash (no Visa/MC).

3 Stars: Horrible Service & Cold Eggs!! (by inimai)

This small cafe has a very cute bathroom, but it's positives end there. The service sucked--we didn't get bread, our eggs were cold, and their brunch prix fix does not include an alcoholic drink. On top of that, they charged us more for our glasses of champagne and mimosas than what was marked on the menu. Since we were a group of 5, they automatically added 18% gratuity. Thirty bucks for cold eggs and a mimosa--give me a break!

5 Stars: Charming and Romantic (by helyn32)

My boyfriend brought me to Le Gigot for my birthday, and I fell in love with this charming and romantic little French restaurant immediately! The space is intimate and tiny, the ambience quiet and romantic, and the food delightful. My boyfriend's duck was unforgettable and my salmon was light but savory. We sat close together at a small table and had one of the most romantic evenings we've ever had in New York!

2 Stars: Pathetic (by anatoli)

Promt seating was the only good thing about this place. From splashing water over me, to forgetting to put a candle into my wife's birthday dessert (although I specifically called and reminded them couple of times), it was not a pleasant 'special occasion' experience at all. At to top it all, the food was just OK. For an expensive restaurant like this, this is unforgivable.

4 Stars: Great find (by foodman25)

We just happened to be in the village looking for somewhere to go when we found this lovely place. Authentic French food in a delightful (if cramped) space. Service was attentive and the food was fabulous. Prices were a bit high but this is NYC. Le Gigot is definitely meant to be a date spot, not a place for big groups. The tables are very close together and small to begin with. So small in fact that my girlfriend set her menu on fire as she tried to read it because of a candle on the table. Sacre bleu!

5 Stars: Charming with good food (by sumptiousny)

While looking for a restaurant venue for my friends birthday I stumbled upon Le Gigot (with location & cuisine in mind). With party of six we were seated comfortably in the quaint resaurant. The service and attention was flawless. I ordered the crab cake special which was mouthwatering to perfection (probably the best main dish that night). Everybody loved the cosy atmosphere and cuisine. I would recommend this restaurant if you want somewhere a little quieter and romantic. It wasn't crowded when we went so not sure if things would be the same on any other night.

5 Stars: Good Value (by bostock)

My husband and I had 8:00 reservations but weren't seated until 8:45. We had to sit on the window seat akwardly squished between the pile of coats and the couple seated at the bar. Things did improve however. We found the wine list to be affordable and compatible with what was on the menu. We started out with the homemade pate which was great. The salad with apples was delicious as well. My husband had the bouliabasse which had generous portions of seafood, but the broth was a tad bit overpowering. I had the leg of lamb served with beans and roasted garlic. It was done to perfection and I absolutely loved it! The service was very attentive as well. I would definitely return.

Everything about this place is charming - and the whole package makes for a wonderful dining experience. If I was forced to find fault then it's the lack of French Apertifs in the bar, but I think that can slide.

We went here for Valentine's day, and the place was just perfect. Its a very small restaurant, but very cute and romantic. The service was perfect. I was even more impressed when a previous diner from the evening called in to report she had lost her watch, and the owner extensively looked for it for her. The food was really tastey as well. We were so happy with our experience there. I should warn though that the prices are as high as you might expect to find in a larger, more well-known place. But its worth it.

I took my girlfriend here for her birthday and we were both very impressed by the atmosphere and the food. Authentic French Cuisine at reasonable prices with a friendly staff. The only downside is that the tables are very close together and you can only pay with AmEx or cash. All in all, a great experience.

3 Stars: We were pushed out... (by rlk125)

I wanted to try somewhere new with an out-of-town visitor. The food came out almost immediately, giving us the (correct) impression they wanted us out of there fast. The food was okay, but not outstanding for the price. After only being there a total of 45 minutes, the check came. Five minutes later we were asked (nicely) if we could leave our table b/c the next table was waiting. Ours wasn't a small bill. They offered free glasses of champagne at the bar, which we took because we were still in shock. The manager came over later and was very nice and apologetic about it, seemingly not knowing what had happened in the dining room. But it was a little too late. I will stick to my tried and true, Le Tableau.

5 Stars: A Surprise (by peterbear)

Le Gigot was quite a surprise. We wanted to go to Po, Mario Batali's restuarant up the street but we arrived 10 minutes before their service started and were told we couldn't wait at the bar. Given that snobbish attitude we decided to walk down the street and discovered Le Gigot so we decided to try it. What a wonderful experience it was. Despite it's tiny space and smallish tables the food was excellent. I had roasted free-ranch chicken that was perfumed with garlic and served with beatuifully prepared spring vegetables. The service was warm and friendly and caring. This is a must try place.

I just visited this tiny little bistro on the evening of my engagement. I had read all of the reviews on this site and it sounded lovely, but I was still a little hesitant. It sounded too good to be true.

But it wasn't! The ambience at Le Gigot is utterly charming, the service is impeccable, the food is delicious. A nice meal for two ran about $110, but it was worth the price if you're looking for something special!

Excellent food, outstanding service, short (safe)walk from the 1 9 subway at Christopher St. Great value, between two people had two appetizers, three glasses of wine, two specials (lamb & lobster/shrimp), one desert, one cap, all for $118.00. Service was outstanding with attention to detail. Not rushed, great atmosphere, nice bathrooms, small place, make reservations.

Wife and I traveled from Philly for a day in NYC and had dinner here that night. Le Gigot is a tiny place (8 tables) on a lovely tree lined street in the Village that is romantic and serves very good bistro food. Apps and entrees were very good with desserts being a little disappointing but still good. Fairly reasonable (but small) wine list. Service was outstanding. We loved the Village and we loved Le Gigot.
