A thoroughly enjoyable experience. I'm from London and this was one of my first visits to Harlem. Our guide was well informed, animated and engaging. He introduced us to some of the most famous land marks, waxed lyrical about some of the gorgeous architecture and sketched out the history.

I recommend it!

Pros: Local Business

.

I found Harlem Heritage Tours in a New York guide book. I was visiting NY with my friend from England who wanted to visit Harlem. We took a cab to the address and arrived just as they were closing for lunch. We had not booked and we had missed the tours for that day. However, Mr Shoemaker, the managing director, was loath to see us disappointed, so he gave us a tour of the immediate streets, telling us the history of the area and its inhabitants, throwing in anecdotal delights! We ended our impromptu tour in the Lennox Bar, where famous jazz and soul acts saw their beginnings. Mr Shoemaker, a true Harlem local, who knew the staff (who were preparing for the evening) requested they open the bar to serve us a lunch time drink which we enjoyed while listening to Miles Davis on the juke box. Next time I am in New York I will definately be spending a night at that club!
If you really want to get a feel for the grass roots atmosphere of Harlem, I would recommend contacting Harlem Heritage Tours for a relaxed and down to earth experience. In view of the review above, perhaps these tours are more appropriate for small, relaxed groups of strollers rather than big tourist groups. I dont think that the company has been established long, so they have a way to go before becoming comparable with the big tour companies. But, for me, I would rather walk the streets with a Harlemite than sit on a tour bus any day! So I rather hope they keep their informal and relaxed style,

Cons: Still in process of establishing itself.

This company is probably one of the biggest disappointments I've had in New York City. I hope this is a positive sign for how business is done is the city and wish Harlem Heritage Tours could pick up on this signal. I talked with the company for over a month about a tour they no longer schedule (Spanish Harlem Walking Tour) but one week before the event, they completely dropped the ball. No returned e-mails, no returned calls. Zip. Horrible. I and my group were left completely clueless about where to go, what to do, whether we should pursue other avenues...REALLY disappointed. I suggest the company revisit the concept of reliability and potential clients search for alternate means of obtaining similar services...or at least expect to be sorely disappointed and left in the dark.
