I think Steve's is a wonderful place. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about the animals. Yes, they do let you handle the animals here which, I think this is very important for a social animal. Whether it be a dog, bird, bunny

I have been a customer of Steve's for a long long time now, even before they started selling puppies. After reading some of the other reviews I felt the need to speak my mind of the store. Steve's has always been the best pet store around

I recently purchased my second dog from Steve's. Having heard that Steve's gets there puppies from puppy mills, I did a bit a research to find out the origins of my dogs. I was very disappointed to find that both of my dogs originated from commercial dog breeders (puppy mills). One in Missouri and one in Nebraska. If you have purchased a puppy from Steve's, check your paper work and search the breeder online.

Though the puppies are treated well at Steve's and the staff there is friendly and knowledgeable, it doesn't change the fact that the parents of these dogs are living under terrible conditions. Not to mention that the dogs are outrageously expensive and their health history is not available. When I purchased my first dog, I bought her directly from Steve who assured me that his wife visited each breeder and that they only purchased dogs from reputable breeders. I guess I should have pressed more and had him define "reputable".

I also have 3 friends who purchased dogs from Steve's at the same time that I purchased my puppy this past summer. We all purchased puppies within weeks of each other. All of their puppies had kennel cough and needed to be treated with antibiotics. Steve's did honor their word and paid for the medical expenses for these puppies. However, a co-worker of mine who purchased a puppy a couple years back, had more serious health issues. Steve's would not pay the medical bills but Instead told her to return the dog and pick out a new dog. Of course, she was already in love with her puppy and paid the expenses out of her own pocket and swore off Steve's Pets.

I recently visited one of these commercial pet breeders when a friend purchased her puppy. The dogs were dirty and scared and afraid of human contact. I guess I have to admit my own ignorance and stupidity. I will not overpay for a dog from Steve's again.

Business Response:

Patty, please do not believe the lie that a commercial breeder is by definition a bad breeder. Yes, most of our puppies come from professional breeders. That is because they are willing to do what it takes to care properly for puppies. While the dogs they use for breeding are not pets, they are given the best of care as are the puppies that they provide. Professional breeders are all being classed as "puppy Mills', a pejorative term that is similar to calling all pharmacists drug pushers. While there are some breeders that breed without concern for the welfare of the parents or puppies, we are very careful to buy puppies only from ethical breeders. All of our puppies come with a complete medical record and while they do cost considerably more than buying elsewhere; that is due to the extra care given to ensure healthy well bred puppies. We are quite proud of where we get our puppies from. There are a lot of breeders out there and we go to great lengths to only buy the best puppies form the best breeders.

Don't buy a puppy here. The store is a great place until you have a problem then Steve has no idea who you are or remembers how many thousands of dollars you spent there. Steve and his employees state that the puppies are guaranteed for a year with regard to health issues. Call today and ask - that is what they will tell you. But when your 5 pound puppy has an issue and has to have surgery or other medical treatment - all of a sudden no one knows anythng about a warranty. We tried relentlessly to get reimbursed for medical expenses and Steve went out of his way blaming everyone but himself (and the breeder) for the issues. He lacks charachter and clearly is not banking on repeat customers or positive word of mouthto keep his business going. We love our dog but feel sorry for anyone else that has to go through what we had to go through. It is a shame - especially for the innocent puppy. Find a reputable local breeder and get your puppy there - stop lining Steve's pockets.

Business Response:

Thank you Rachael. We are very careful about what puppies we bring in and your positive expierience is what we are hoping that everyone has. Owning a pet is, from our perspective, a great oppurtunity for both children and adults alike. The negative comments come from those that do not want anyone to own pets. They attack us because they do not want us selling animals to people.

Well MrMastermind of NONE
I know very well of Steve's Wonderful World of Pets as I have been going there since they first opened. You say ask the employees there any information you want on their puppies? Sure, they'll tell you what they are TOLD TO TELL YOU... these puppies are all from puppy mills and don't let anyone fool you. I've done my research too and have lost a puppy I purchased from Steve's due to a overbreeding problem. How do you mend broken hearts that loved a darling puppy for 3 years, had to spend over 7000.00 to try to save her only to lose her in the end due to OVERBREEDING???
You truly don't know what you're talking about, or you are just too connected to someone there at Steve's and have to defend them.
There is no defense...... GET RID OF THE PUPPIES and stop these da*m puppy mills from breeding more. Sure, they're cute to let your children play with, but DON'T BUY ONE.... go to a reputable breeder not dogs from Hunte which is a broker for Puppy Mills.
I will admit I am truly stupid for purchasing another puppy after we lost our first one we got from Steve's and NOW SHE HAS HEMOPHELIA and cannot be spayed. Coincidence???? I think not.

They are so cute to look at, but I will NEVER purchase another puppy from Steves only to let it die in a year or two from a genetic disorder from overbreeding.
I am very active in PETA and do tons of research on these puppy mills not to mention the price you pay for a potentially 'sick' puppy.
Steve, shut the darn store down before many more hearts are broken as ours was.
AMEN

I have to agree with a lot of these reviews. I recently went to Steves Pets to get a bijon frise. When i got home I googled the breeder. Turns out to be a hick family in MO and a puppy mill. I turned up several articles on how this puppy mill has been under investigation several times.
A week after i got the puppy she became fatigued and her head started bobbling around. Rushed her to the vet and it turns out she had been very malnurished and underfed! In addition, it turns out she is NOT 3 months old like Steves claims she was. She is much younger and should not have been weened away from her mother yet. So after spending over 1,000 on this dog i had to shell out 270 a week later for the vet visit. And now i have to take her back for more examining to make sure shes ok.

The dog is sweet and loving however she has been very mistreated and i was lied to

Had a couple medical problems with my puppy, spent the money at a good vet. Will probably have more medical problems in the future because the breeding stock must not have been good. I started researching; wished it was not true, but those puppies do come from puppymills. Even if I forget about all the bad stuff people say about puppymills, the hurt and cost to my children because our puppy has problems makes me very upset! Sorry to say it, but I would not buy animals from here.

I too have a degree in Animal Management and I also have been going to Steve's since the store first opened several years ago. I have 4 dogs and 7 parrots..... One Quaker purchased at Steve's and just 2 months ago a Maltese puppy that has a bleeding problem (hemophelia) and she cannot be spayed..... The tiny Bichon/Apso that I purchased from Steves 3 years ago had an inherited bladder stone problem from a liver shunt has two stone removal surgeries and finally died from having the shunt redirected. She was taken to a Soft Tissue Specialist for this operation and her entire care was over 4500.00 for the 3 years of her life..... worth every penny if she would have survived the surgery. The Specialist asked where we had purchased the puppy and we told him Steve's and he said he gets many puppies with inherited problems from Steves.

As for the parrot, conure and cockatiel food Steve is discontinuing the seeds that my birds have been on for over 12 years and they won't even eat the new products he is carrying now.
We spend over 400.00 a month at Steve's on bird products and seed and dog products also. Now Steve's is carrying alot of China imports in dog snacks, chews, etc. and we won't be shopping there for them anymore.

Our Maltese puppy has so far had 3 blood tests for her 'clotting' or should I say non-clotting problem and so far it's still a no go. We will have a little girl that goes into heat every 6-9 months and will be required to wear pads to keep her from bleeding all over our furniture and bed, as that's where all our 'puppy' children sleep, with US.

I am looking for some kind of compensation on the cost of all these blood tests and for our heartache after getting a puppy with another serious problem just after we lost our other one from Steve's. So far, I cannot reach Steve as he is hardly there anymore like he used to be and I was told that he is changing most brands on birdseeds and supplements and dog treats also (imported from China)....... We have since found a new Pet Shop that carries AMERICAN made dog treats and chews and that's where we will be spending our money from now on.

Sorry Steve.....I truly am disappointed that you are going the route of imported goods for our fur and feather 'babies', but it just will not do for ours anymore. I don't want to see them on a recall list after our dogs or birds have consumed them for a few months.

Your puppies may not be from a puppy mill, the jury is still out on that one, but they are overbred and have problems from that overbreeding...... especially liver shunts mostly in Bichon's and Lhasa Apsos and now hemophilia in my 6 month old Maltese????? C'mon Steve.... step up to the plate and help us out with some of these expenses, even though we will mortgage our home again if we have to just to save her.

Disappointed after 12 or more years with Steve's

I must say however, that the staff that works there are very understanding and did all they could to help us with ANY problems we had.

They provide great animal resources and information, even for the animal beginners. I suggest that people looking for a good place to shop for new or old animals, go here. They can answer all your questions about any problems or concerns you may have about your pet. And they will even give you tips on things you can do.

I just bought a puppy from Steve's 2 weeks ago and I could not be more happy! Since I bought him I have been back to Steve's several times and every single employee has been so helpful. As soon as we walk in the store they rush over to visit with my dog and talk about how much they miss him. They all care about me and my dog and listen and help me as I ask tons of questions and in general just want to talk about my dog. When I bought him they gave me tons of info on his BREEDER, as he is NOT from a PUPPY MILL. They were very reasonably priced (I have even purchased several items from them that I found to be cheaper than corporations like PetSmart) and while some may disagree with the idea that dogs are handled by people I think it did wonders for him, as he is open and loving with people and well socialized because of it. In addition I like that I was actually able to make several visits and make sure that he was really the dog I wanted before I purchased him. He already had all his shots and was neutered upon me purchasing him. I am so happy with him and the services Steve's has offered to me and my puppy!

I find Steve's a nice spot to shop. The staff is friendly and informed on their subject matter. This is an excellent spot to shop for puppies, kittens and birds. An excellent selection of top quality foods I would rather shop here than go to one of the major national chain stores.

When I went to steves i thought it was pretty nice inside until I saw the puppies. The puppies were in these little cages and they all wanted to come out to get played with. When my family and I took a puppy out it had so much energy because he wasnt out all day. It was around 5 and the lady who worked there said the puppy hasnt been taken out at all. I felt so bad. Then when i went to say goodbye to the puppy i saw that the puppy a couple cages over waas eating its own poop. That means a dog is stressed out and bored. All the other puppies were sleeping because they had nothing else to do. They should give the puppies more places to roam around and let them out to play everyday.

I walked into this store to try and find a leash for my dog and I could hardly stay in there it smelled so bad. I was nauseated. All of the puppies are in small cages that do not appear clean. Upon further research I found that their puppies come from the Hunt Corp, which is a known puppy mill. You can search this online and find multiple reputable reports of cruelty to animals and unsanitary conditions there.

I will never visit this store again because the smell is just so horrible I can't take it. But a more important reason is I would never support a store that supports puppy mills. There are many reputable local rescue organizations and the SPCA that have mixed breed and purebreed puppies and adult dogs.

I was surprised by the neg. comments left by some. I've bought 2 dogs from Steve's & had wonderful service both times, even when they were busy & I had to wait a bit. Upon the first purchase, I was a newbie, & the salesperson coached me & gave me info that subsequently saved my puppy's life in an emergency situation. Their business practices were explained to me to calm my fear of puppy mills. The puppies were kept clean & care was taken for their safety while in a meet and greet. There was close supervision without intruding on the customer's ability to interact & there was no pressure to make a decision. They were very professional. I'll be back for my third fur baby.

I visited Steve's because I was new to the area and didn't know what horrors awaited me. Though they have neat toys, I bought nothing from Steve's. The sale of puppies in pet stores is archaic and barbaric. Everyone knows where these dogs come from. Everyone knows that when you buy one you put money right in the pockets of puppy mill butchers. They deny that their puppies come from mills but couldn't put me in direct contact with any breeder!

Even petco and pet-smart, huge, soulless chains, only keep ASPC adoptable dogs and cats todays. This store needs to be shut down.

Please, the next time your child begs to go see the cute animals take the opportunity to educate them about humane and responsible husbandry, and DON'T cave in.

Pros: None worth selling your soul for!

Cons: Puppy mill puppies and unknowledgeable staff.

Interesting the opion of customers. OK Well I worked at Steves a few years back so I have an inside track on things. As for the Puppies- Well MOST of them come from the Hunte Corp- research them and make an informed decision. I bought 2 dogs from there. One is wonderful and still with me worth every penny. The second dog- well after having too many problems to list the dog had to be put to sleep. I do give this store a lot of credit as they do attempt to have staff training but sometimes they are understaffed. The animal care given at this store is pretty good and usually what you see is what you get. I left the store for personal reasons, and rarly had problems with the managment of the store.

First of all I would just like to say they are not all teenagers that work at Steve's, they're very knowledgeable about the animals they sell. All the animals are healthy and that's their most important concern, selling healthy animals to customers. Unlike other pets stores, the animals are able to be handled to socialize them which is great. Everyone is very friendly and they always offer assistance to meet individual customer needs. It's horrible how ignorant people are, if you have a problem with the store tell them so they can fix it!

While outside protesting them for selling puppy mill dogs, an employee came outsite, threatened me, and then snatched the sign out of my hand.

So, I guess it confirms it. They do sell mill dogs, and don't want people to find out.

So, don't buy hear, unless you want a defective animal, and contribute to inhumane puppy mills.

Cry Cry Cry Wa Wa Wa. Every complaint I hear about Steve's Wonderful World of Pets is posted by ignorant people that don't know the facts. Instead of being a cry baby about how horrible the puppies are there, try going there and talking rationally to the employees about where the puppies come from and how well they take care of all of their animals. I've been a customer of Steve's Wonderful World of Pets for the past 12 years and have had nothing but positive experiences. I have also worked in the pet industry for 15 years and have seen many different pet stores that carry dogs throughout the USA, so yes I am well informed about the pet store business and Steve's Wonderful World of Pets is one of the best. I guess the moral of the story is to try and base your opinions on the facts.

Pros: Wide variety of pets and good customer service.

Cons: I wish they were open longer.

On our second trip to Steve?s pets we were met with the rudest employee I have ever seen. My girlfriend and I were looking at a beagle puppy and were really interested in buying her. There was only one employee in the puppy area to start. We were ignored for 15 minutes when she was talking to another customer that was very indecisive. We stood in front of the dog?s cage for 15 minutes waiting for service. Finally we were allowed to see the puppy. After 5 minutes of playing with the puppy, the woman employee walked into the cage, grabbed the dog from us and put her away. She ignored us and didn?t ask if we were done seeing her. She didn?t ask if we were interested or anything just took the dog and put her away. Then she came out of the puppy room and walked away to talk to the indecisive customer from before. I am so angry with the crappy service that I don?t know if I will ever go back to the store. If you do go to the store be prepared for crappy service unless you get a younger employee and prepare to empty your pocket on the price of these dogs. Who ever heard of 1000 dollars for a beagle! The puppy was not even AKC or had any other certifications. All it has is the apr and aca.

Anyone who would go there so their kids can play with the puppies is sick when they know where these dogs came from. Inhumane puppy millls where the parents spend their lives in squallor and suffering. Shame on you for teaching your children that it's OK to go there and approve of what they are doing. Any companion animal is given to us to love us and us love them back. Not toys for kids. Get your head around this and stop teaching your kids that it's ok to support the inhumane treatment of any living being.

99% of the pupppies that Steve's sell come from puppy mills. NO
responsible breeder would ever sell their dogs to a pet store.

Pet stores get most of their dogs from Hunte Corporation who is a broker
that gets most of his dogs from puppy mills. The employees may also tell you that their dogs come from places that are USDA licensed breeders ... those are puppy mills , please go to the website prisoners of greed and search hunte corporation in that website or broker.

If the employees at Steve's tell you they get the puppies from local
breeders, get the address and check it out. The address of the local
breeder would probably be somewhere in Ohio or Missouri (big puppy mill
states)

The only reason to breed is for the betterment of the breed ... not as a
cash crop.

Animal lovers have been writing letters and talking to Steve for years
to stop selling these mill puppies to people that don't know any better.
Even people who do know better buy one thinking they are saving that one
but another will take it's place so the horrible cycle continues as long
as the public keeps buying. If there's no buyers for these pups there
would be no reason to keep churning out these ill-bred puppies.

In the meantime the parents of these cute little puppies are suffering in
cages 24/7, no human contact, no vet care, inadequate food, never touched
grass, unsocialized and bred until they can breed no more and are usually
destroyed.

THe way to stop this is through education and legislation. DO NOT BUY
THAT PUPPY FROM A PET STORE for God's sake and the mill dogs sake!

I have been a customer of Steve's for a long long time now, even before they started selling puppies. After reading some of the other reviews I felt the need to speak my mind of the store. Steve's has always been the best pet store around this area. That doesn't mean there aren't other good pet stores around but nobody takes care of their animals like steve's does. The staff that has been employed there over the years I've been a customer has always been extremely knowledgeable and cares deeply for the health and well being of the pets. I would argue to say that anyone that has a negative thing to say about steve's hasn't actually shopped there, at least not for long enough to make an educated statement. Anyone with a problem can ALWAYS find the answer at Steve's.

I think Steve's is a wonderful place. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about the animals. Yes, they do let you handle the animals here which, I think this is very important for a social animal. Whether it be a dog, bird, bunny , or ferret all these animals need interaction to be happy, healthy animals. I think some people who write these reviews are very ignorant in there thinking. If you ask me and you should (having a degree in animal management) Its good for these animals mental and physical well being to be handled. Obviously if you or your child is sick, DONT touch the animals. I think Steve is doing a wonderful think socializing the animals. There are rules as some below me might not realize. In order to play with a puppy you have to sanitize your hands and if the puppy you chose has been out to long they wont take it out for you. These puppies also do not come from a puppy mill. Most of the dogs are registered or are registrable for akc or others. They do not come directly from the breeder either. A company brings them to the store after they have been vet checked and chipped among other things. The puppies are very well taken cared for. They are exercised and given the best food on the market. Most if not all are on natures recipe (which comes from new zeland) and contains no hormones or additives. And for those against impulse buys...have you seen there prices for dogs??? As for the chickens they are rented not sold. After they rent is up they are sent to a egg laying farmer, they ARE NOT sold for meat. As for the dyed ones...big deal?!! that chick has no idea what color it should be or is. And its not hurting it in any way!! The tattoo fish are a bit much i'll admit but it doesnt hurt the fish. PETA just has it panties in bunch as always. (Just to be a informed consumer: PETA has no scientific community and are very anthropomorphic thinkers). All in all I have had very good service from Steve's!! I think other reviews are a little ignorant so before you dismiss Steves as a bad place, go there and ask questions. No staff member will refse to answer your questions! If you feel unsure about the animals well being or the process of the store, ask questions on why they do what they do, talk to Steve himself. Be a informed consumer!!!

The store does not sell baby Chickens!!! It rents them out around easter time (To Save Unwanted Rabbits) and then has them returned after easter. The chicks are then donated to area farms where they are used as laying chickens. So they are not used as meat chickens.

A couple of months ago, I bought a dog from Steve's. I think it is a wonderful idea to let the kids play and handle the animals. How can you truely know if you want a pet unless you hold it in your arms and look into the animal's adorable eyes. And the people are supervised as they handle the animals. My grandchild wanted to hold a dog a few months ago, but the supervisor wouldn't let her play with the dog until her mother came. I think Steve's is a wonderful place to buy a dog. And I love what they have done with the new dog area.

And no. Steve's does not get its dogs from a mill.

We couldn't be more happy with our new puppy. We went in looking for a particular breed, but after talking with the staff and our needs with a cat in the house, they helped us choose a Japanese Chin which is the most friendly and playful puppy We've ever seen. She is loving and affectionate to everyone and snuggles with our cat. The staff at Steve's is professional, and I enjoy knowing I am working with a Christian Business owner that stands behind the pets he sells
