I am an artist in the Guggenheim museum collection, have been buying from NY Central forever, it is the very BEST in spite of some of the stoned workers, most are great! Owner is a great guy also.

The best help in town

I've been to very art supply store in NYC. Most have a staff of college kids that change jobs every three months. NY Central has people that have been working there since i started going there 20+ years ago. They all seem to be artists themselves and are extremely helpful. And they have simply the most amazing stuff there.

Horrible
by joe b.
I'm a professional artist living and working in NYC for 23 years. While they have an excellent selection, probably the best in the city, the service at NY Central is always terrible. If you ask one of their employees for help, it's like you are interrupting them from some other important task. I've never gone there and been treated anything but rudely. The employess are more interested in conversations between themselves than helping customers. The gentlemen in the paper section have a tremendous amount of attitude. I appreciate their knowledge, but maybe it's time for them to get another job. I can't help but assume this reflects the owner. Very dissappointing.

This place is great. As far as art supplies go, they have everything you need. Plus, the staff, mostly artists themselves, have a broad understanding of their products and offer great customer service.

Service is so-so, but a good selection of harder to find fine art materials.
by inkpress84
A small store compared to other art stores in the city. What sets this shop apart from the others is the fine paper selection upstairs with a lot of exotic papers from around the world. Also a nice selection of imported brushes and sketchbooks. There are also many printmaking supplies available downstairs which I haven't found anywhere else. Student discounts are available, but overall I think this store is more friendly towards serious professionals. One guy working the paper section was very rude...I asked what was the heaviest paper they stocked, and he gave me this annoyed grunt. DON'T LET THE STAFF PLAY YOU!!! I sometimes ended up lashing back at them, and that straightened them up...
But, if you are looking for just a very good selection of GENERAL, high quality art supplies I would recommend instead Da Vinci Art Supplies on 21st St./7th Ave. Chelsea. EXTREMELY FRIENDLY STAFF. (forget Pearl Paint! That store has been going DOWNHILL)
Pros: PAPER SECTION! Higher-quality art supplies they stock
Cons: very small and narrow store, some staff are jerks. Others are OK
