I have been going to this French Bistro for about 15 years and it is consistently good. It's a very "New York" place with a great scene, while being very cozy and friendly. The walls are covered with artwork/posters and they have a fish tank that give it a funky feel. Their food is amazing. The menu is on chalkboards written in French. The lamb and steak are out of this world and they have a great wine list. On the negative side, it does tend to get crowded and it is pricey, but I think it's worth it. It's a great place to meet for drinks or go for a romantic dinner.

Had the chance to dine here with a buddy of mine on a Monday night. Our reservations were early, for 6pm, and we had a few drinks at the bar before we sat down.

One of my misgivings about going out in NYC is that i'm not one of the "elite" people of the world. I'm not a banker with ax executive account, or a trust fund kid, or a dot com millionaire. I'm just a regular guy who likes to go out to nice restaurants every few months - and avoid places that treat me like a nobody.

This was my second visit, and they absolutely made us feel welcome at the bistro. There were no pretenses. There wasn't any "Peter Luger-esque" attitude by the waiter. The waiter was delightful, friendly and accommodating and his service was excellent and attentive.

The food is really what people want to know - and I must say it is sublime. Every single thing we ordered, from the tuna tartare & braised beef ravioli appetizers to the steak au poivre to the profiterole dessert were just amazing.

I also want to note that we did eat early and by the time we left, every table was seated. At no time did I feel rushed to finish. We had a leisurely meal, and even were given a tour of the "garden" area through the kitchen, which I thought was pretty cool. Wasn't a huge fan of the booth seating, people behind me kept shifting and jostling around. Also the booths are small, if you have two people over 6 feet sitting across from each other, their knees basically touch.

The mix of people in there are SoHo locals, the banker-types, hipsters, Midwest tourists, eurotrash and the occasional celebrity.

This is definitely not a weekly visit for people like me. My buddy and I had appetizers, dinner, wine, dessert, dessert wine, etc and our bill was over $300.

But i'm fine with that to treat myself every once in a while. I'll save up and in a few months go back again.

Pros: Steak Au Poivre, Great Scene, Favorable Service

Cons: Pricey, Cramped Seating

I??m normally never moved to write a review of any kind, but for this I will make a special exception. Perhaps it was the outcroppings of furry fungus growing upon the plastic plants in the aquarium, next to which I was unfortunately seated, that has tipped me over the edge. Perhaps it was the fact that we made reservations for 11:00, and were not seated until 11:25. Then again, it could very well have been that once we were finally seated, the extremely rude little waiter did not deign to appear for another 10 minutes or so, and proceeded to act as though mine and my date??s orders (butternut risotto and the rack of lamb) were utterly beneath him and worthy of nothing so much as his contempt. Yes, it could have been all of this.

OR! Perhaps what really got to me, in the end, was that I paid (or rather, my date paid, but that is not the point) $40 for a lamb dish which the menu said would come with a side of grilled eggplant, and what I received were three miniscule ?? perhaps an inch and a half long and not quite an inch wide, and maybe half an inch thick ?? pieces of lamb, which admittedly were tasty, but not at all worth the price for the portion. It was depressing. I wanted to throw a little funeral for my plate. So sad! As for the eggplant, at first it was nowhere to be found. It turned out that there were indeed three lonely, dry, tasteless disks of eggplant were stuck to the sides of the lamb. I feel sorry for them, so I??ll let them call themselves a side if they need to, but my stomach disagrees.

To sum up: we had to wait, the waiter was intolerably rude (I almost got up to leave at this point, but foolishly decided to stick it out), the food was disappointing, and the thick layer of green slime in the fish tank next to which I was sitting was incredibly off-putting. It was also too crowded, and we were seated in the middle where everyone and their bags were constantly smacking into the backs of our chairs (and we are tiny people; we don??t stick out much).
Bad, bad, bad!

The food was very nice. The service was not as good as it should be. The cup he brought had some stains and we kindly asked him to changed it. He gave the attitude back. If I were the management, I would definitely do something. There are so many restaurants in New York but we chose Raoul's because we were expecting a good time. It could have been one of the best night if only the server was a little more mind service.

This was my second visit to Raoul's and I was blown away by the fantastic service. Don't get me wrong, the food is amazing as well. But when you live in a city of fabulous food options, service is one of the areas where a restaurant can truly stand apart. From an excellently selected Loire Valley wine, to the salad of mixed greens with goat cheese, to the pork surrouded by delicious apricots, and ending with melt-in-your-mouth profiterols, I couldn't have asked for a better meal. The wait staff was patient, available without being overbearing, and always smiling. I felt like I was visiting a friend's house. I highly recommend Raoul's and can't wait to go back. Maybe next time I'll try sitting in the garden!

I am not surprised at the number of reviews here knocking the attitude of the employees. Apparently the reservation taker is too busy being a snob to keep his reservations straight. I called early in the week to reserve in the garden for later in the week. I was told to call day-of to confirm. When I did this I realized my reservation had been put down by mistake for the night I CALLED, not the night I was supposed to come.

I was told there was availability but not in the garden. When I said I didnt want to eat there unless I was in the garden and I couldnt believe they could make such an error, I was told 'well that will happen sometimes' in the snottiest way. NO apology was given.

I was amazed by the lack of apology and attitude (after all this could have been a very special occassion for all he knew that was ruined by his incompetence). He then said 'well we'll play around with this and see' regarding availability for the garden. If they were packed every night this attitude would still be appalling but clearly they are not or they wouldnt have been able to take me day of at all. There's too many garden dining options in this city to give your money to those who clearly don't care about customer service.

It's hard to find a restaurant that always offers an amazing dining experience without fail. From the food, to the service, to the decor; there is nothing I would change about this restaurant!

The intimate setting is perfect for a romantic date; however the bar is always buzzing with crowds of people.

The food is always amazing! If you dine here, which I highly recommend you must not pass up the Steak Frites! It is cooked to perfection and always delicious. The appetizers change seasonally and are amazing as well! You should definitely try Frisse salad with Lardons and poached duck egg. There is nothing on this menu that isn't good!

The wine list is great!

The service is great! This isn't one of those French restaurants where the waiters are obnoxious and rude.

Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone and everyone!! We eat here regularly and will continue to!

AVOID. A few friends and I went last thursday for dinner at what we thought was a casual bistro. We ordered a few appetizers before our entres with a price range from $8 to $14 from their chalk board menu. Among the items was an unpriced cavier appetizer which we knew would be more expensive than the other appetizers but did not know was $145 for one appetizer until the bill came. We asked the manager why they could not list the price for an appetizer that is seven times the cost of some of the entres on a "chalk board" menu. Did they expect the price to change over the course of the dinner hour?

When we explained that the waiter should have advised us of the price, the manager treated us like unsophisticated people who were trying to avoid a bill and "obviously did not keep up with the price of cavier". He totally missed the point since our complaint was not actually about the price of cavier but about their nondisclosure policy and poor and rude service. Also, the winding spiral staircase to the bathroon is an accident waiting to happen.

Raoul's is the perfect expression of a downtown Manhattan bistro. This was were Thomas Keller of the fabled French Laundry ,Per Se and Rakel first earned his spurs. The food is perfect unpretentious bistro. Try the frisse with lardons and duck egg a hypodermic shot of speed to the soul. Raoul's is the most Rock and Roll restaurant in Manhattan. I love it

Undoubtedly one of the best bar steaks in the city. Belly up and have a great meal. This is a really nice place to go if you have a friend in from out of town, there's something special about it. Maybe it's the bar steaks... It can get crowded, so time your visit well.

This has nothing to do with a bistro.
pompous and over the top. I especially did not like the service and being seated in the middle of the way.
too expensive for what it delivers.
lost it s authenticity a long time ago.

As late-night diners, we were treated poorly. Both appetizers arrived cold/luke-warm, which we had to send back, only to have the waiter tell us that one was supposed to be cold. French fries were cold and tasted like they were made 5 hours ago. Main course was okay but nothing to rave about and certainly should not have cost $30. We walked out the door with only a drink in each of us and the bill was still over $100. Don't go here. There are so many other worthy places to spend your money.

Excellent food, good wine list at decent prices, extremely well accompained caviar, magnificent steak au poivre, i was a little disappointed though by the escargots not being served with shell, service not bad, i was actually expecting worse from other previews, however it turned out quite amicable.-
Trendy set, quite a nice place to dine out. I had a magnificent and enjoyable dinner with friends and definitely will go back.-

definitely a cool place for either a date or with friends. the food was great....service was pretty good. i would recommend a table upstairs for dinner...very low-key, nice ambience, etc. the downstairs seating area seemed tight and loud. pretty crowded as expected on a weekend, so a reservation would help out some.

several years ago my husband and I were looking for a place to have a drink after a long day of Christmas shopping. We rejected several places and when we looked inside Raoul's it had the charming atmospere we were looking for. Everyone was delightful and when we asked if we could get a table for dinner, not only were we seated graciously, we sat next to Liv Tyler and her now husband. Our waiter was great and I had sublime duck with a potato/sweet potato grain that i have duplicated and serve at the holidays. Our waiter, who was from Albany ( we live near) gave us a complimentary dessert. We have made dinner at Raoul's part of our holiday tradition and have always been thrilled with the experience

I have to say, this is one of the best meals I've had! The host is very snooty and rude, but then, it was a Saturday night at 8:30 and we had no reservation. It took and hour to get a table and the place was so packed we had to finally go outside to wait, however, the food was absolutely wonderful! I had the steak frites and my friend had the duck, and both were to die for. It was definitely the best duck I have ever tasted. They serve delicious bread and butter before the meal as well. I thought the prices on the wine and food were quite reasonable, especially for the unique atmosphere and trendy neighborhood. The best advice is to make a reservation, but I wouldn't miss this spot for the world!

I read the reviews on how great this place was & I was so excited until I got inside. 1st of all, the place is small. The Host was @ the OTHER end of the bar. Had reservation for 8pm got there @ 7:45 & didn't sit til 8:20pm. Crab cake: Negative, it was cold. For all my Escargot LOVERS, be aware that they take it out the shell 4 U & place it in a plate w/bread crumbs & grapes -HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED. Entree: Had the Sauteed Black Sea Bass. Key word:SAUTEED..Its served with clams around the plate (only 4). I ate my dates food & ate only 1 bite of my bass. Dessert: Creme Brulee-it was okay, it started off warm on the edges then it got really cold in the middle. Such a DISAPPOINTING DINING Experience. I would not recommend this place to ANYONE.

Went there for Christmas Eve without a reservation. Managed to be seated in a nice patio room complete with Christmas tree after only two drinks. Everyone was friendly and attentive except the doorlady who snorted when I told her that I didn't have a reservation but ushered me in nonetheless. Could not resist the steak frites after seeing so many around me enjoying it. It did not disappoint - possibly the best I've ever had. And the deserts were decadent. I applauded the kitchen staff on my way out (to get to and from the patio you pass through the kitchen) needing no more for my Christmas.

Normaly I go once a month or so, yes im an addict to there steak frites.Normaly dont order anything else, thats my husbands job ,we always end up sharing my steak but some charming waitres talked me into the specials that unbeliveable.the gravlox perfectly done and homemade foie gras sausage on lamb, creative and exciting, so different from the ala cart menu that is going from boring,to out dated to right out of cookbooks(scallops).PS-there was a foie terrine last time i went arguably the best in the city.To bad its not consistent to the rest of the food that ive had there.

The salmon dish was terrible. The salmon was obviously not fresh - it had a strong "fishy" taste. The sauce was equally bad. The waiter saw that I didn't eat mine, but neglected to ask if anything was wrong. Having just returned from Paris and wonderful meals at reasonable prices, Raoul's was a huge rip-off. I will never go back.

I returned to Raoul's recently after many years away.
My steak was the best I remember ever having at Raoul's and the Tuna Carpaccio left me wanting to return again and again.
Service was a treat from my French (Canandian)waiter who knows more about wine than anyone waiting on me in NYC in a long time.
Congratulations Raoul's on keeping it going.

I loved Raoul's fois gras terrine and am missing it after they have a new chef from last year.
On my last visit, one of the waiter told me that they were thinking to put Fois Gras terrine back to their menu... I am looking forward to it.
Well, besides Fois gras, I must admit that I liked the food from the last chef better than the ones from new chef,, but no complain about the new ones. Still, they are very tasty and actually became a bit more "new york" style of French food. Well, I am still on authentic side, though.

My friends & I ate at Raoul's last night and had the best meal I've had in a very long time. First of all, we were told it was probably going to be an hour wait since we didn't have a reservation, but they ended up seating us in great seats on the patio within 5 minutes! The waitstaff was very attentive and the food was incredible. The peppercorn steak w/ fries was amazing, along with the artichoke appetizer. I'll be back.

Went here for dinner with husband just for Steak Au Poivre. We live in upper east side so it was quite a trek. Best dinner I've had in a long time! We asked to be seated in the Garden Room, which is quieter than the main dining room. Service was nice. I cannot stress enough how pleased I was with my Steak! The peppercorn steak was amazing! We asked for our steaks well done! No pink!! Very pleased!

Pros: FOOD, INTIMATE ATMOSPHERE

Greatly enjoyed both the food and the service on our first visit here. We went early without a reservation and were treated like regulars. The service was there when you needed it and fantastically busy elsewhere when you didn't--just like I like it. The food was well presented and uniformly flavorful--a bit expensive but a good value considering the ingredients and preparation. Highly recommend the "Short Ribs" Napoleon, Carpaccio de Bison, Steak au Poivre (with the best cut of meat I've ever had in that dish...) and Pate de Maison. Desserts, coffee and kir to start were all perfect as well.

Our meal could not have been better. The scallops were perfect! So was the veal, and the pork chops...but the service was horrible from start to finish. I feel like we spent a lot of time and money there. We must have waited 15 minutes for the waiter to bring the dessert menu...then opted for the check.

We sat in the "garden area," which is a 5'x5' cement square with 2 ficus trees, and too many tables. SIT INSIDE! The food is great - a very traditional left-bank-type French bistro, excellent ingredients, hearty portions...had the Bison Carpaccio - I've never had better. The Duck was phenomenal and DO NOT PASS UP the Coconut Tapioca with Passion Fruit Coulis and Banana Fritter...Mon Dieu!!! Very nice wine list. Aside from the cramped seating and menu on a smudged-up slate, I would definitely recommend this place....

Had such big expectations of Raoul's from a friend. Seated next to the fishtank (6 inches - nice headache..). Boring service. Everything Overpriced. Oysters and Crabcakes were very good. The entrees were not. My Steak au Poivre was supposed to be Med-Rare and turned out Well Done (?) and my date's fish (Turbot) was on the drier side. With tip, dinner = $175....whatever

Located in the heart of Soho, Raoul's is a great restaurant for almost any occasion. First and foremost, the food is exceptional. The steak au poivre certainly lives up to its lofty reputation, but it shuoldn't overshadow many of the other delicacies on the menu, such as the crab cakes and the frisee salad. The wine list is terrific, as are the deserts. The ambiance is superb; dreamy and romantic. The waiters are knowldgeable, friendly, and prompt. Our group was approximately one half hour late, and not only did we not lose our table in the garden, but the staff was extremely understanding and patient with us, which was a pleasant surprise given the restaurant's poularity. There are cheaper places to eat in the city, but in the case of Raoul's you more than get what you pay for.

I'm not a connesieur of French cuisine, but my girlfriend who has been to Paris enjoyed it. The garden room is quaint and romantic. Walking through the kitchen made me feel like I was Henry Hill. Good service, great wine selection

the food and ambiance is great. the only problem i had was the service. the waiter that was assigned to us was too busy mingling with other people and neglected us for a very long time. i recommended this restaurant to my friends but warned them about the short waiter who neglected us.

I made an 8pm reservation for four and found that we were going to be extremely late. We called to see if we could push it back but the Maitre D' said they were completely booked but we could be put on a waiting list when we arrived. Upon arrival at around 9pm, we got absolutely no attitude and the host was extremely gracious. He seated us right away and we proceeded to have a wonderful, fun evening in the garden. Our waiter was great! Food was delicious and the trip through the kitchen is entertaining itself.

This place has great ambiance and service!

Food was truly outstanding, as we had been told. atmosphere was charming and very French. The host was very accomodating but the waiter was abysmal...service was very disappointing. Regardless, we'll assume that the lackluster waiter was a fluke and we shall return.

Foie Gras was among the best we've had, and we've had some of the best in France.

been here about a 20 times over the last 10 years. in all those times i can only remember one TINY problem with our food which was immediately rectified. wine list is outstanding and can have some very pleasant surprises. steak frites, frisee salad, seared foie gras, risotto and rack of lamb are my favorites. insist on the garden for the exotic walk through the kitchen, the romantic atmosphere, and the ability to smoke after dinner. they were out of my favorite port last time i was there, but they will probably have it next time!

We had a rowdy party of 12, which grew to about 22 toward the end of our evening. Management provided us the rear (more romantic) part of the restaurant to accomodate such a large group from the start. They got the order right, food was fantastic, service was ever-present (I think we has at least two waiters assigned to our table). Dance music toward the latter part of the evening, even the staff, it seemed, want to get in on our good times.

While the food and ambience are wonderful, I am annoyed by the policy that you must confirm your reservation the day of, or they will cancel it. I just tried to confirm 24 hours in advance, which is acceptable to most restaurants, and they said I had to call back the next day or my reservation would still be cancelled.
