I have been eating at this neighborhood gem since they opened their doors. Excellent food - especially the BFB! However I must say I have become a fan of the Charity and Chorizo burger. Stellar. The owners are simply delightful! The space is wonderful, funky cozy and during the summer months they have an awesome outdoor space.

I went to this restaurant after reading good reviews on this site and others. However, the food was horrible! I also don't get the decor? It's a restaurant with South American/Cuban/Puerto Rican dishes but there are strange, creepy pictures on the walls of old, East Indian men? WTH?!!

Cons: Terrible food!

.

First time eating there I had:
- Hummus and pita
- Chorizo burger and sweet potato fries

The hummus was very tasty and well presented, however, it could have been more moist. A dribble of tahini or sesame oil would have done the trick.

The burger was dry and had the consistency of a veggie burger. However, it was still delicious and the fries were nice.

The bartender/server was very attentive.

I plan to try the pork sandwich, the chili, and the empanadas and other things. The prices are great.

Don't like the homo-erotic artwork (would have liked to bring friends, but probably won't now). But other reviews seem to indicate that the artwork changes a lot.

The bartender is very cool and will remember you from visit to visit.

SECOND VISIT

New bartender, lacking in social skills.

CHILI was very, very salty -- too much. Otherwise tasty.

EMPANADAS were overcooked on the outside, to the point of being crunchy. Fillings were very nice.

LIGHTING was too dark to read the menu.

THIRD VISIT

Had the cubano sandwich (delicious) and the rice and beans (very tasty). I would order them again. Very nice female bartender this time around.

My friend and I always go to Fatty's for Sunday brunch. Last week, however, we had a horrible experience and will never return. We were told we would be seated in 10 minutes and after a half hour if waiting for a table we saw several people coming in who were obviously friendly with the owner. When a table opened up, we saw the waitress coming over to us to seat us, but the owner called her over and we observed that he was telling her to seat his friends first. We waited almost an hour for a table and his friends were seated first. We just left after that and will never again eat there. It is a shame because the food is good, but they can't treat their loyal customers that way.

I live just a few blocks away from Fatty's and have been there several times--it's always a treat. The wait staff is always friendly, and the food is always great. They have a great brunch on the weekends and fantastic dinner fare every night. The owner is Dominican The drinks are also outstanding. My only complaint is that space is very tight there, and because of its popularity it can get crowded. I noticed that in a few older reviews, people mentioned that they don't take credit cards--they do take them now.

Ive been here a few times and first let me say that the bartenders are very nice and they make an awesome mojito. the food isnt bad either, though i would go there for drinks first before food.
The place is very small and theres not much room between the bar and the tables so if you are looking for a quite romantic meal, forget it. If you like drunk bar patrons practically sitting in your lap while youre eating then this is the place is for you! This place has to decide if it is a bar or a restaurant because its just too small to be both.
My friend arrived for a visit from out of town and arrived on a saturday night, and we wanted to grab a quick bite and fattys was within walking distance, so we went there. It was about 9.30, the music was blaring, the bar was packed and it was way too crowded to enjoy a meal (as mentioned above). the owner approached us and asked us if we wanted a table, he was very nice until i pleasently replied that it was 'a little too busy for what we wanted tonight'. Well!!!! - he changed his tune very quickly, and said 'OK WHATEVER!' and stomped away like a child!! My husband and i had a similar experience with him a few months ago (should've know better then to go back, but i just figured everyone was entitled to a bad day).
Its a shame because its a nice little bar to have a few cocktails but i would never go back there as i absolutely refuse to give this horrible man another single dime!
He has a reputation in the neighborhood to be full of himself and obnoxious. And the previous reviewer who said he was a great guy? - he must have wrote that himself!!

Pros: good mojitos, nice staff

Cons: The owner!! Too small to be a lounge/bar AND a restaurant.

.

By the look of the reviews on this site it looks like the owner has been consistently giving it a good rating. I can`t see giving this place five stars. The burgers are pretty good, although last time I went it came with the bun on the bottom and without the requested cheese or fries. First time I went the service was great, but the rushed and rude service a second time will probably keep me away.

I am so happy that I live basically around the corner from Fatty's. The owner is a great guy who goes out of his way to make the patrons feel right at home. I am an especially big fan of the weekend brunches - particularly their take on mofongo - but I also highly recommend the polenta cakes. Fantastic bloody mary's too! The menu selections have a health conscious edge and they do up a terrific burger and great Cuban sandwiches. I love it when the outdoor space is open during the summer time. It makes for the best vacation you can take here in New York!

Pros: Great food consistently; affordable; pretty outdoor space

Cons: None!

.

The food is consistently excellent, it has a better-than-average beer list (all in bottles, alas), and the mojitos are made with genial enthusiasm rather than resignation. Fatty's is too down-to-earth to run like a well-oiled machine or boast of "service with a smile," but even during its most hectic times the staffers are genuinely friendly and make duly diligent efforts to be efficient.

Our favorite menu choices for dinner include the thick black-bean chili, served with tortilla chips that seem homemade (the meat version is equally delicious, but it's rare to find plain old black beans prepared this well); the jerk-marinated Yard Burger; and the Chofan, which even suits our foolhardy macrobiotic needs. Sandwich-wise, the Cubano (the classic pork-ham-cheese-pickles with a yummy chipotle mayo) and Chavorrayo (chicken, avocado, jack, and garlic mayo) always delight, and are hefty enough to take a half home for the next day's lunch. At Fatty's brunch, the polenta cakes are our default choice, best with the side of ham, though any of the offerings will hit the spot (except maybe La Pistola -- fried eggs on rice and beans with a tortilla, which can be lackluster).

The music can be too loud at night, and too dim to qualify as "restaurant" instead of "bar," but we keep coming back because, frankly, we can't get enough.

As an Astoria resident, Fatty's is always a nice option for a meal out - in particular I recommend their Black Bean Dip to start, and then one of their burger options with Sweet Potato Fries. Additionally, their fish with fried yucca is pretty fabulous too.

Great bottled beer selection, and pretty solid wine options, too.

Friendly staff, but food will take a while, so it's certainly worth ordering an appetizer.

Pros: Affordable, tasty food

Cons: Longer wait for food. No credit cards accepted.

Fatty's gives large portions, particularly of the salad greens and side orders, but the food was not spectacular. The burgers and sandwiches are fairly tasteless and the burger was surprisingly gristly, so to mess up a classic like that is a bummer. They have a good selection of bottled beers, but nothing on tap. It didn't break the bank, but it was nothing to write home about either. The staff were accomodating so it was disappointing to not like the food here with all these good reviews - maybe this was just an off night. Wouldn't say this is a must for new-comers to Astoria.

This is definitely one of my favorites in Astoria. I come here with friends and family all the time, and have never been disappointed. The prices are great and the food is amazing: try the steak mixed grill. You get a giant heap of food including juicy pieces of steak, a variety of veggies, and in the middle is a mound of hummus, along with pita on the side. The little place can get crowded, but in the spring and summer, the courtyard in the back is opened up. I recommend sitting out there. Last time I went here, the wait was about a half hour, so we sat at the bar. The owner offered us a complimentary plate of fried plantains. Get to know him; he's very friendly and will remember the regulars. ALSO, try it out the Sunday brunch special. The meals are $11, the menu contains a lot of Caribbean-influenced breakfast/brunch dishes and the price includes either a mimosa or a Bloody Mary.

Pros: Owner, Price, Food, Brunch, Outdoor Seating

Fatty's is fun for brunch and dinner in the Ditmars area of Astoria. Drinks are killer here, though the tab can get high if you hang around too long. The establishment is cash only however, so bring some money if intend on bringing a date out here.

If you want to leave your house keys so that your house guests can pick them up while you are at work, Fatty's is the place.
Fatty's is more than a restaurant, Fatty's is a living room for your family. Fatty's is exemplary of a little community.
Food is great, original sandwiches, Mojitos are fantastic, the beer selection is the best in Queens, I can't say enough to get it into one review. This place rocks!

Fatty's is a great restaurant! The staff is really friendly. My fiancée loves the salmon burger, which is made fresh everyday, while I am partial to the fabulous skirt steak. They change the the artwork in the walls regularly, sometimes it is really nice, sometimes it is really... interesting :-) If you find yourself in Astoria you should definitely give it a try! Their $10 weekend brunch is worth the (short) train ride!

I actually went to Fatty's recently and they were not sooo friendly. They were absolutely obnoxious and not welcoming to me and my guests. I will definitely think twice about where I take my out-of-town guests in future. Its not like we are in Manhattan its Queens get rid of the big city attitude. Ohhh and its not like your chef is Jean George either....

Fattys is easily one of the best restaurants in NYC. The food is incredible - I'm very particular to their brunch specials - and ther ambience is always cool. The staff are very friendly and attentive. During the summer a back patio opens up and you can sit outside and enjoy your meal. If you're in Astoria for brunch or dinner, definitely try this great place!!

My boyfriend and I went here for dinner on Saturday evening. There was only one other couple inside, but there seemed to be a lot of people sitting outside somewhere...the food was very good and average priced.

Excellent Mojitos!!! This place is a little gem in Astorie that any local should visit on a regular basis.

A friend and I recently went to Fatty's Cafe for an early dinner based on the review in Time Out New York. Even though there was a Christening that had reserved the restaurant, the waiter told us we could sit in the patio area and wait until it was over for service to resume. He even let us order drinks - quite possibly the most delicious mojito I've ever had. We split the Jalapeno Turkey Burger and the Cubano with a side order of Tostones and all three were fantastic. I'm definately going back soon!

Fatty's is great for Astoria because it adds a bit of a creative, artsy Williamsburg vibe to a neighborhood otherwise lacking in that type of flavor. They serve wonderful mango mimosas and spicy chipotle bloody marys for brunch, with creative selections like fruit-filled pancake omelettes or melted provolone sandwiched between two polenta cakes. For dinner, they offer similarly interesting options, with a slight Latin tendency. The entree salads are small, though, albeit very good. Excellent selection of bottled beers, plus $5 Tecates-and-shots of tequila. There's also a rotating art selection, with sometimes very beautiful pieces. Excellent option and highly recommended.

i really want to like this cafe since it brings a welcomed alternative to tavernas in astoria. the atmosphere is cozy, the service is helpful & inviting plus you can almost always get a seat. the problem is that the menu has far too few options. i've been 3 times & ordered the same thing each time because the menu does not change or give me wide variety of choices.
