We signed up for a discounted Mani/Pedi special through Groupon. I admit that we were expecting a lot for a $130 mani/pedi. What we got was a just ok mani/pedi.

When I called to make the appointment, I was rushed off the phone. Upon arrival, we were seated on not just a threadbare couch in the reception area, but one with holes in it. We then were asked to fill out some forms and choose from a menu of wonderful sounding mani/pedi combos. We both chose one that stated it included a seaweed wrap and a tropical fruit punch. We were then taken into a fairly public, not quiet or calming area, to have the treatments. They descirbe the ambiance as "french cafe", but it was basically very uncomfortable wicker chairs and metal tables, not those nice massage, spa bath chairs. We never got what I'd call any kind of seaweeed wrap. We got your basic mani/pedi. I guess the wrap was the moisturizer they put on for a few minutes and covered with seran wrap. By almost the end of the service, we had not received our "tropical drink" as described in their menu. When I asked about it, they didn't know what I was talking about, and finally brought some mediocre lemonade. The minute the last coat of polish was put on, the manicurists disappeared. No help with any little smudges, or taking off the little foam sandles and getting your shoes back on.

All in all, I can get a much nicer experience around the corner from my house which includes a $15 manicure with a 10 minute massage. Thank goodness we didn't pay the full price of $130 because the experience was mediocre for a normally priced mani/pedi.

I didn't even have an opportunity to try the service... that's how bad the receptionist is at "scheduling".

I purchased two Lifebooker Loot certificates for massage service at the Just Calm Down spa. I tried twice to make appointments. The first attempt was shortly after the purchase date. I was told to call back two months later to schedule the appointment as they were not accepting appointments using the Lifebooker certificate. When I called the second time, after being placed on hold off and on for 15 minutes, I was told I would have to wait two months as there were no availabilities. I agreed to wait the two months, and finally on the date of the first massage, I received a call asking me to reschedule because they had booked four people for the same timeslot.

The receptionist is an idiot. I would rather eat the cost of the certificates than give them another dime.

My suggestion- go to Soho Sanctuary. Their masseuses are the best, it's a true day spa and it's only slightly more expensive than Just Calm Down- $125/hour rather than $110.

That's right! Run, Don't walk!!! I'm a Spa and beauty editor and I just love this place and especially people who work there!!! Due to my work I have to try a lot of places but I always come back to this one for my routine treatments. My first time at this Spa was a couple of years ago when we were working on the article about Just Calm Down and their sweet mani/pedi services. I became a regular client since then. Romeo is the best massage therapist on earth, and Anastasia does the best facials there, plus her waxing takes 7-10 minutes which is very convenient for my busy schedule. Go to Esther for nails. I have to tell you I just melt in their golden hands. And keep in mind: the most of the services done with organic ingredients! And the place itself is so pretty. It is a jewel of a spa indeed. I strongly recommend it to everybody

The below review is pretty tacky and I feel sorry for someone who appears so unhappy. Just Calm Down is the best Spa I have ever been to and I have been to spas all over the world. I have been going there for six years. The mani-pedis are amazing. The list of choices goes on forever. Your feet feel like puffy clouds when they are finished. The room is beautiful!!! When I am there, I feel like I am being pampered in a garden cafe in Europe. My weekly water bed massage is also pretty fantastic. The owner and her staff go out of their way to make you feel special. If they are running late they always take extra special care of you. Just Calm Down is the place to go! Treat yourself for the holidays and always!

I've had massages all over the world, and am very particular, but my last visit to Just Calm Down was by far the best massage I've ever had.

I had the 007 massage and it was out of this world. It really made me feel like James Bond!!

The staff were extremely courteous and friendly, its a really beautiful place and made my day.

Reading some of the reviews here it sounds like people are trying their best to complain to get discounts. After all, this isnt the cheapest spa, but you get what you pay for and if you want the best, you should check this place out. I'll definitely be coming back!

Last week I went there to get a massage and a pedicure, and really it was the best experience ever. I loved the atmosphere and the way the staff made me feel. I felt awesome after my services. My back feels like a million bucks! I was so glad that my therapist really listened to my issues and addressed them all. I loved it so much that I added an additional half hour. My pedicure was also very relaxing. I loved the nail area. It feels like you are inside a garden. The big, wicker chairs were terrific. I also really liked that the foot bowls were not attached to sinks. The vibe is great. After reading some reviews I was astonished that anyone would not love the decor! So different--like sex and the city chic-NOT MEDICINAL like a doctors office. Come see for yourself why this spa is worth every penny!

After reading all the bad reviews I decided to write a review to explain that all the bad reviews rolled into one experience at JUST CALM DOWN was the experience I had.
I too am a huge fan of spas/massages and this was the worst massage I have ever gotten in my entire life.
The room was freezing. The lights were bright. The music was loud.
Oh, not to mention the receptionist was horribly rude and actually didn't have my appointment scheduled when I arrived!
The massage was inconsistent...massaged one hand but not the other.
And the mention of not asking if I prefer a man or a woman masseuse, yes, that happened to me. I went with my friend and we were taken back together by the masseuses and we had to decide then who got who...what if we both didn't want a man?
HORRIBLE, JUST HORRIBLE!

I absolutely agree with the previous review!!!! My boyfriend gave me a Gift Certificate for a massage a couple of years ago and since then I'm addicted!!!! I just loooove this place! For me it's the best, cos it's so pretty but simple at the same time, I feel very comfortable there! Sometimes I go to get a service there even if I don't really need it... just to communicate! I love my girls!!! They always treat me as a queen!!! <3 Thank you all for taking care of me!!! :-*

Love this place. I had heard from some friends how great the services were so I decided to check out for myself. I came for the first time with a Lifebooker coupon ( worth the wait! and what a deal! ) & I must say that I was very impressed. I had an amazing male therapist who really was a real expert. I chose to upgrade to a heated deep tissue massage and It was out of this world. His neck work helped my knots tremendously. I was so happy with the way I felt, that I wanted to add on a facial. They were booked, so I came back 3 weeks later and it was a face life changer. Relaxing, thorough, and great deep, painless extractions. The massage portion was heaven! I am so happy that my friends introduced me to this wonderful place and I will be a loyal fan for years.

I went on a Monday afternoon after getting a discount coupon on line for $100 service for $50, and after being told that the Friday afternoon appointment I wanted was impossible, they are supposedly very busy then, booked this instead. Mid afternoon on a Monday, I was the ONLY client there. No manicure pedicure person, I am talking NADA. Very creepy. I had a male masseur, which was fine with me, but I have never been to a spa (and I am a spa junkie) where I was not asked if that was OK. No changing room, no robe, I took off my clothes and put them on a chair in the massage room. And no shower after, I left covered in massage lotion. I had a decent massage (not great by any means). I thought the whole place was cheesy and had a really bad vibe, and I will never go back.

This place is for real! Props to all of the staff from beginning to end. I was welcomed with a smile and left with glowing skin, the greatest massage experience ever. and a pedicure that is still going strong 3 weeks later after sand and sandals!. How lucky I am that I was recommended to this Spa from a colleague. The ambiance is super relaxing and super beautiful. The relaxing cafe like area for nails is beyond cool. They have these great blue bowls that truly beat those outdated sinks! My esthetician was so skin smart and so talented that my skin is still smiling! The massage was on this cool water bed. It was warm and relaxing and I will tell you the neck, back and leg work was out of this world. Thanks to everyone at just calm down for making my time there so special. By the way, I have already booked my next set of appointments and this time I am bringing my best friend! Can't wait!

I had a facial and manicure at Just calm down. The decor was nice and made me feel away from the city. The manicure was okay, something you can get at your local corner nail salon minus the chocolate soak, yummy - but the manicurist was so sweet and nice (tipped her based on her personalitiy) Cool colors for polish. My facial was relaxing but wish it was more than just a face massage. I had a 5:30 appt but since i was 10 minutes late they cut my service short. Not Cool. They should have told me that over the phone when I spoke to them at 5:30 pm, but that was my fault, I was late but I expect to get what I pay for. Other than that mishap this place is nice but I would not pay the full price for their services, too expensive for what you get.

I made an appointment (earlier today) on lifebooker for 6:45pm. I was there at 6:40pm and was greeted by a woman working the front desk.

After filling out 2 pages of forms, she offered me a drink, which I politely declined, but she kept insisting, so I asked her what she had. She mentioned wine, to which I delightfully agreed. About 5 minutes later, I saw a glass of wine and asked if somehow that was the one for me, she said it wasn't and took it away.

A few minutes later, she offered me some magazines, at which point I reminded her that she really had me excited about that wine. She replied that she could not retrieve the wine, because she had to mind the front door. She actually seemed annoyed that I kept asking about it--after she had insisted on offering!!!

Then she mentioned that I should wait in the next room (the nail treatment room). Which I did. All the while getting a sense of how awful the pedicure bowls (like cooper pots) looked and how incredibly uncomfortable the wicker arm chairs looked (for pedis, or for just sitting anytime even).

So later, after waiting a total of half an hour (keep in mind: she is the only person I saw the entire time), with still no wine, and no apologies - I went back to the front (where I saw yet another new glass of wine, whose...I wonder?) and asked to reschedule, which she did for me (I think you can guess that I am going to cancel that).

Never an apology from her. Then as I tried to leave, the door was locked (which I had to pull on the door once and push once before she finally told me it was locked!) ...so what was that story about watching the door? Horrible waste of a half hour of my time.

I think they need to take time to figure out if they can handle lifebooker clients, at the last minute.

I've been to probably over a hundred spas and this is, by far, the worst I've ever been to and I see, from other reviews, that it is quite dirty as well. Just awful. Stay away! Not to mention that their prices are insane!

Pros: my only pro is that I didn't spend any money there

Cons: service, comfort (do not go here, seriously!!!)

I went in to have a facial here and absolutely loved my aesthetician! She was extremely knowlegeable and helpful and gave me great advice on how to improve the appearance of my skin. I've been doing what she said and using the products she suggested and I've seen great results after only 3 weeks!

I highly recommend this place.

I booked an appointment at Just Calm Down Spa after I had heard great things from my friends. After seeing all of the great reviews, I was even more excited. I am so glad I did because not only did I have the best massage that I've had in years, I have finally found a spa I love after looking for months! It is really hard to find a good spa in New York City with decent prices and I've finally found it. Highly recommended!

I made a spasally appointment for Just Calm Down. I called a few months after the promotion, figuring the rush to schedule manicures would be done, but I had to schedule an appointment a month away - for a manicure. Whatever, I thought, I already spent the money.

Cue today where I get a phone call saying I'd missed my appointment and the money from spasally was forfeit! The forfeiture wasn't a surprise - that's the policy for spasally and the participating places and I know that - but it was the fact that I didn't receive a call to remind me. What spa doesn't do that? In all my years as a spa-goer, I've *never* not gotten a reminder call. Color me surprised.

When I called to confirm that it was indeed their policy not to call, I also got a great little condescending speech about how people usually write things down in a blackberry or on a calendar. No kidding. And spas usually make reminder calls. Apparently neither of us did what the other expected - only I'm out money and they are not.

Some advice for the future: A simple "yes, I'm sorry but that's our policy" followed by a quick "would you like to rebook anyway?" might have got me to come in anyway. The 'people usually write it down' jab during my follow up call made me write this instead.

It wasn't me, but my mom, for mother's day (today, May 9th, 2010). I paid by phone with gratuities. Was that a mistake? Should I have given my mom money or just tell her to tip herself?

My mom had massages before, most recently at Oasis. She said that the woman there was big boned (meaning, I guess, was strong though not overly so), friendly and clearly enjoyed her job. Brooke, at Just Calm Down, was not any of those.

First, let me say that conversation is not a dealbreaker. But you know how someone gives you a half-hearted massage at 11am (the first appointment of the day), the place just doesn't have high standards. Any one of her family members could've given her a better one, she came back and told me.

Brooke was so sloooooow, that she didn't even cover my mom's entire body. She thinks that Brooke only went through 60% of the routine. She only got to massage one of her feet! When my mom asked her to do the other, she picked up both at the same time and squeezed her big toe! What is that?!?! And why would the receptionist ask which parts of the body to focus on, if she wasn't going to take the info and use it? My mom wanted shoulders and lower back... she got some shoulders but no lower back. Brooke seemed inexperienced, or not used to using strength as my mom felt her trembling from exertion... weird...

I called Tara, (the boss?!?) who I'm not sure heard my complaints as she was inundated with calls (b/c of mother's day) and she said she would call me back and then hung up. That's rich, as she did not take my name or phone number. I wish I did not tip her the 20% that was suggested by Tara when I first made the call. I read all the great reviews from Google but I guess we were just the unlucky ones... I wouldn't tell people not to come as other people have had better luck... but jeez, make sure you ask for someone with years of experience first. What a waste of my hard earned money!

Pros: Nice big place, comfortable waiting room, discount

Cons: The woman mentioned above was inexperienced and half-hearted

I wanted to add that I just visited JCD recently again and I had the BEST massage of my life! Everyone who loves just calm down should spread the word! I am their biggest fan.

what a most wonderful surprise was my Mother's Day gift from my husband--a pair of massages and facials (for my mom and me--isn't that sweet!) at just calm down spa! So many of my girlfriends have already been there, raving about the place, the staff and all the services but work and family life just kept me away--but not today! Our massages from Brook and facials from Jen were just so, well, so PERFECT! Every moment was so special, a beautiful Mother's Day memory we shared! At last, I got to JUST CALM DOWN!

for facials, ask for Ilana. she was one of the best facialists i've had in manhattan! very attentive. goes above and beyond. other than Ilana, JCD offers really great specials every now and then, which make pampering much more affordable.

The Just Calm Down Spa is the answer to every tired, stressed out woman's prayers with their specialty treatments and massages designed to relax and delight you. Everything on their menu of services sounds absolutely sumptuous and doubles as a mini vacation. This is a once in while experience as they are on the pricey side. But so worth it!

I love this place! Tara the owner is the best! I feel so comfortable every time I come here and they make me forget about every stress I have in my life! Their treatments are amazing! They make everything themselves! Once you have a massage on their heated water bed no other massage will be exceptable!

Just Calm Down is a really cool spa. You feel at home there from the comfy couches to the staff who treats you like family. I never went to the old location but have been going since the new one opened and I am hooked. It was really neat how I could pick my own music for my treatment...that part was awesome. Massages are great as well as facials. I need to try a manicure soon.

I recently went to JCD for the first time after reading all the hype. It was amazing and loved it! And this is a REAL customer writing this review....in response to the review below. Obviously when a spa is so good there are always a lot of haters! But the owner was really pleasant with me and i had nothing but a good experience. the Moroccan Massage is amazing!!! i've never had anything like it. I just came back from a Vegas trip and had a massage at the spa at Ceasars and the Moroccan was better than that! can you believe? Go Just Calm Down! thanks for calming me down completely! i'll be back ; )

I've been going to Just Calm Down for a little over a year now (both old and new locations). I'm an Englishman in New York and travel around the world for business. That means I get stressed and I've visited an awful lot of spas in my time. After a few hundred you get to know what really is a good massage, who really knows what they are doing and recognize great service.

Just Calm Down is a fantastic place. I would not hesitate to recommend it and do so frequently. I've never left dissatisfied and I'm a very fussy person. The staff there are extremely friendly and I look forward to seeing them as much as I do the massage - they are always welcoming, smiling and attentive. I just wish I was in the country more often to go there. But try it for yourself - you wont be disappointed.

I must say I LOVED my experience at just calm down in their new space. I have been a loyal customer to them for a few years and have never had a bad massage/pedicure/manicure. anything there. My pedicures were perfect & manicures were great. Truly the massages are the best! This weekend I went for the Valentines special. As I entered the new space I was greeted by Tara (owner) who is absolutely amazing and attentive. The room + music + mimosa infused massage was so truly relaxing. The combination heated water bed/ heated towels just melted my stress away. I was totally relaxed & my masseuse was phenomenal and ultimately I felt 10x better than I did before. I highly recommend any of their services; a great time for all!

As a current employee i have to COMPLETELY disagree with the below comment! I feel sorry that some of our former emplyees have become so bitter...being unable to bring everyone over to our beautiful new location...as we only had room for the best! The owner of Just Calm Down, well what can i say, is the nicest women i have ever worked for. I feel so lucky to have this job in an economy that has gone under so quickly. Not to mention because of everyones money issues these days the owner is always discounting services...check out our website! So it's very clear to me you have no idea what your talking about!

Just Calm Down has finally moved and all I can say is a job well done! The new location feels like a country house in the big city. The manicure/pedicure room truly feels like a cool european cafe, with a such a beautiful sky-lit ceiling, making you feel like you are outside! The details are just perfect. The rooms are cozy and the beds heated. I was so lucky to have been given a birthday surprise last week to enjoy a facial, massage and pedicure. All the services were truly divine. I am so happy they are finally up and running and I am sure that anyone who steps inside will be lost in the spa's magic.

the problem with the below reviews is that just calm down was closed during their big move for almost 2 months. how these reviews can be valid, i just don't know. the spa has by far the nicest desk people in the biz. you say "sickly sweet" i say sweet in this city is a rarity. i am surprised that a review sight allows for such false slander to be written. but trust me when i say that the owner and desk girls always go beyond the call of duty. i have been a client for many years, not only because of the wonderful services, but because the owner is so hands-on and so involved. stopped by the new place, and all i can say is wow! so if you are an ex-employee who feels better about yourself by putting down others, find something better to do. like grow-up. just calm down deserves all the praise in the world!!!

I recently went to this spa and found the services to be less than stellar. I had a facial/ pedicure both were awful. I am not sure the facilist knew what she was doing as she pulled my skin to hard there is no door, just a curtain so , it's really noisy and cold in there. As for my pedicure there was a tin bin that I was supposed to put my feet in. how ancient is this??, the pedicurist had my feet on her lap( very slave like) As I sat to have my feet dried droves of people passed by which was annoying. My polish was a little messy but I was late for dinner and just wanted to get out. I had not checked the price for the pedicure when I went to pay I was outraged by the price of $85.00, I will never go back

Heat pack placed only my back was so hot it nearly burned my skin off, I had to ask for it to be taken off. This is was not what was expected or described the therapist was nothing to brag about although I was told she was great, what a waste!!

So sorry to tell the last reviewer, but Just Calm Down is moving to bigger and better digs! Didn't you see the website?!!! Seems you like the gossip of it all without knowing the REAL back story! It's pretty sad that you could dislike a person who is so darn nice and truly puts her personal touch in everything she does. With so many spas in the city, why are you still a client then? I go to the same therapists all the time and I must say, they always compliament the owner and seem very happy with the place! Why else would the BEST therapists work there??? She MUST be doing a lot of things right! To everyone else, see you at the new place!

Just CalmDown has been a fixture throughout my five years of city living, a magical escape where my friends and I walk through their doors and everyone and everything negative and stressful immediately disappears as the surroundings, the aura and the everpresent warmthful greeting grant us that wish for paradise akin to that only a genie might otherwise grant. NEVER, in the dozens of services my pals and I have indulged in has the outcome been nothing less than stellar. A pedicure/massage/facial gala for a 41st birthday was magnificent, the owner constantly ensuring that all was just as planned, and needless to say, carried out with perfection. We are so excited for the grand move to 18th Street, where only more of the same magic glamourously awaits!

I was so glad to see a a proactive client writing back to the ridiculous review about the owner. Tara is the best and most loyal owner of any business I have ever frequented. She is so hands-on and so caring that it makes the time I spend there totally special. What's so funny about the negative review is that the writer comments that her friends who have been there agree! Then why go??? It's too obvious that a nasty spirited, jealous person is writing such nonsense-look who's passive aggressive! For all those who are reading reviews because they are looking for the BEST-this is the place! And to Tara, we all love you!!!

Reading the below review I am ashamed at anyone who would write such false untruths. So ashamed that I am writing back, something I normally don't do. First of all anyone who knows the owner, Tara knows how unbelievably nice and sweet she is. She goes above and beyond making sure that each client is completely happy. To say she would falsely charge a credit card, which in all the years I have been going never has happened to mean or anyone I know, is shameful. Clients love Just Calm Down for its very homey atmosphere and the wonderful owner. It's funny you say the staff doesn't like her either, as I have been going to the same two therapists for many years. It seems to me that you must be a former employee with nothing better to do then spread disgusting rumors. To everyone else, listen to the kudos and ravings by New York Magazine and Allure...They wouldn't be given such honors without the loyal clients who have been obsessed with the spa for years!!!!

when i came to my first appointment, i was in the middle of a really bad day. the girl at the desk (i later found out she was the owner) was so nice and friendly and understanding to my mood that i instantly felt better. it was if i had been a client forever. i indulged in a massage they call the split personality (funny, ehh) and like the description it up-lifted my sad spirits. the massage therapist was so attentive and read my muscles like a good book that i felt like wonderful at the completion both physically and mentally. thanks girls for a most memorable few hours.

As a long-time Just Calm Down Spa goer, I must say that I am very surprised when I see a reviewer putting down the positive reviews. It makes me wonder if the neg review (see right below) is true or not! Just Calm Down has a stellar reputation and the reason is the place is quite special. The services, staff and down to earth vibe are charms the spa possesses that sets itself apart from the many other, white walled medicinal bubble spas in the city. I have tried most of the services by myself and with friends, and we have always been more than pleased. So I suggest a try so that you will see what a great experience Just Calm Down spa really is. Listen to those good reviews, they definitely count for something. Also, check-out all the magazines. Editors seem thrilled toooo!

I'm a girl who loves deep tissue massages! The stronger the better. Usually when I have massages only male therapists are able to break through my ridiculously tight back muscles. Well, I finally found a woman who is able to do just that! Kristina...you were awesome! I definitely hesitated when the desk told me that only female therapists were available on the date I wanted, but I am so glad that I listened! Just calm Down is truly the definition of this place! I say to all...just go and find out for yourself!

Believe the hype and the talk...This place rocks the house. From the charming and eclectic decor to the sweet and helpful front desk to the top-notch service providers, this place stands out for sure! Came on recommendation for a quick brazilian and ended up scheduling a facial and a massage. The wax was quick and virtually painless (if you can say that about a wax!). The facial was very complete and my skin felt like years city grime had been lifted. The massage- well that just lifted me to new heights. Raquel my therapist really knows her stuff and could read my muscles like a book. Love this place and recommend to all!

I was recommended to visit Just Calm Down from my hotel concierge and a wonderful experience it was! After a very long flight and a night out I was ready for some relaxation. A massage would truly be a blessing I told myself...Where to go? Well Just Calm Down really was a delight. My Massage Therapist Maya was so helpful in helping me choose the right massage for how I was feeling. We decided on the Raindrop massage which helped to clear my head and warm my muscles. Her hands were luxurious, working out my flying kinks and six months of working too hard knots in my back and neck. She was truly a blessing...This is my way of saying thank you.

after spending way too many hours in the office without a break, I decided to treat myself to a little time at just calm down. Great idea on my part. I decided to have a facial and a pedicure to get ready for the Summer months. The facialist was a true miracle worker. She was extremely nice and out of the park talented! i never had a facial before with such a wonderful massage. She was also very diligent and listened without hesitation to all my skin complaints. She explained to me the best way to care for my skin and advised me on a few key products that would help to maintain the sheer magic she had worked on my skin. It was my good fortune that she also was my pedicurist. She helpeded me to choose the most brilliant color (environmentally friendly to boot!) to match my skintone and the best pedicure for my tired, cranky feet. Thesoak smelled and looked beautiful and completely calmed down my sore, achy feet. It's been three weeks since my visit and my polish still looks great...not to mention my glowing skin. I was so glad to have the few hours of ultimate relaxation and hope to get out of the office for another spa break soon.

after spending way too many hours in the office without a break, I decided to treat myself to a little time at just calm down.

Pros: wonderful facials and pedicures

Cons: can't move in

.

I used to live in the Chelsea area of NYC and i really enjoyed Just Calm Down on a weekly basis. I have since moved back to London, but on a recent City jaunt I had to visit my old spa. The place is as charming as ever and I do believe the services are even better than before! I especially loved the quirkiness of The Moroocan Massage. This was new to the menu since I had last been to the spa and I must say, a one-of-a-kind experience. It helped with my jet-lagged body and stiff airplane neck and leg muscles! I am hoping one day that Just Calm Down comes over seas! That would be a real treat! But for now, I will make a visit each time I revisit my old city.
