Many folks say Keen's is their favorite steakhouse in Manhattan, but that was not our experience. The food was good, but really nothing special. We ordered the porterhouse for 2, and it was a massive amount of steak... very good, but not the best we've had (we liked the Striphouse much better). Steakhouses are a dime a dozen in NYC, so it's the service that really differentiates... and that's where Keen's failed. The service was efficient, but completely indifferent and cold... our waiter acted as though he could care less about us (or his other tables for that matter). We ordered a nice bottle of red wine, and it was WARM, as though it had been stored above the stove in the kitchen...definitely not proper serving temperature. Of course our waiter didn't bother to ask if everything was okay, so we just toughed it out. We would definitely not return - will take our business and $$ to a business that cares more about their customers.

My husband and I went for dinner to celebrate our 10th Anniversary and had a wonderful time. A friend had recommended Keens and we were not disapointed. We shared a porterhouse for 2 and it may have been the best I've ever had. I picked the location for my husband because of its scotch selection and history but I was also impressed. The server was warm but did not hover, which I like. A great recommedation from friends and we will return.

Where do I begin? The steak could have been used as shoe leather? Or hum....The snootie wait staff....hum..or, the wine that was godawful. The food was tasteless at best. What was most sickening was the attitude of the servers that acted like it pained them to be of any service at all. My advice....go anywhere else, even McDonalds!

We went out hoping to have a lovely dinner at this restaurant after reading all the reviews at this website. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. Our waiter was rude and condescending. My husband got a Filet mignon. He said his was dry and had no taste. I had sauteed shrimp. I've had better shrimp at Captain D's. We had one glass of wine each one side each and the bill was 157.00. The waited got his drawers in a knot when we didn't order dessert. I went back to our hotel and didn't think I would make it. I had to go to the bathroom so badly I nearly blew the lid off the toilet!

Well let me preface this review by saying that my friends and I have been trying a different "top tier" steak house approx every 2 months or so for the last 2 yrs. I would rate Keens near the top.
Pro's: Great Mutton Chop - never had one before but had heard and read good things about it so we went with three people and ordered 1 Mutton Chop and a Porterhouse for 2 and shared. I expected the Mutton Chop to be really gamey and tougher, but it was delicious and juicy!!! The Porterhouse was really good as well. Not the best I've had but very good. We started off with a dozen oysters which were delicious. I was impressed when the waiter brought out a basket of carrots / celery and olives with a side of blue cheese along with the breadbasket. It was tasty and I thought it was a nice touch that separated them from other places. Also the Mutton Chop came with a side of Mint jelly which tasted like something they had made as opposed to out of a jar. It was very good.
Cons: The sides were a little below average - we tried the home fries which tasted like mashed potatoes with a burnt outer coating. Wasn't terrible but would try something else next time. Winter vegetables were okay, at least it was something different than the usual fare.
Notes: We didn't have any desserts so I can't comment about that. They had an excellent selection of scotches to try.
Service: Good
Price: I would say it a little higher than most similar steakhouses.
Advice: Definitely worth a try. Go for the Mutton Chop. Great place to go before a Knicks and Rangers game.

Went to Keen's for New Year's eve with a party of 5 and had an amazing experience. I don't think I've ever seen such a cool decor to a restaurant. The ceilings are lined with Sherlock Holmes-style pipes on the main level and Confucius-style pipes on the second level. There are at least 3 bars accessible at any given time and the main bar is big enough to hang out at regardless if you are eating or not. The second level sports a full-size piano, although there was no piano player on when I was there. Now to the food. We had the sliced/tomato and onion with buffalo bleu cheese as an appetizer - delicious. For the main course we decided to order 3 cuts of meat and have them sliced so we could pass them around family-style and the waiter and kitchen were more than happy to oblige. As far as meat goes, anyone who goes to Keen's and doesn't try the Mutton Chop is missing out. I had never had it, I didn't know what to expect, but when we had all tried everything everyone at the table agreed that it was the juiciest and best-tasting of the 3 cuts we ordered. That's not to say that the Porterhouse for two and the Kansas City Sirloin weren't superb; they were andI could go back for either of them. It's just that the Mutton provides a uniqueness that you just don't get with any other cut. We also ordered a Scallop and clams special. I usually don't bother with seafood when I am at a steakhouse but I am not exaggerating when I say the scallops blew me away. They were unbelievably flavored and cooked to perfection. The creamed spinach we had as a side was weak and the mashed potatoes and asparagus were standard; nothing special, but the 3 cuts of meat and scallops combined with a Scotch list that sports just about every Scotch known to man and quality service at a reasonable price have me itching to go back already.

I was looking for a great "New York" steakhouse, and this is it. This is no chain. This is the real deal. From the time we arrived I had a good feeling and could sense the history of the place. Old, dark wood floors, white tablecloths, friendly and attentive staff. We went about an hour before our reservation so we would have time to sit in the bar, and I'm glad we did. After 5 minutes we were able to get 2 seats at the bar and start a tab. The bartender gave us great service, even making the classic "Sidecar" drink that I had never heard of but soon grew to love (Brandy, Cointreau, Lemon). The atmosphere is upscale but very relaxed & comfortable. We sat at a table in the first of two small rooms on the second floor. We had excellent service. We never wanted for anything and the waiter made great suggestions. We shared a half-dozen oysters (East & West coast), great, and I had a NY strip (bone in) that was the best steak I have ever had. I am a ribeye eater, but Keen's doesn't have ribeye and the waiter suggested the strip. Also had the "hash" (the waiter insisted) which is really a pancake of mashed that is pan fried. FANTASTIC! We also had the carrots and they were also great. After dinner we shared bananas foster with coffee and a side of Bailey's. The perfect meal. Never rushed but still ended too soon. I can't wait to go back to NY, if only to go to Keen's again. !! : )

I had diner at keens couple of days a go with a friend of mine. Food is good, drinks to short , but not pricy for a steakhouse in manhatten. Drinks are taylored with your particular taste and the bar creates new offerings all the time.Talking about service..... to bad, shame on Keens. Our server kept talking all the time about how simple the life was in Ohio and how complicated NYc can be. Than hi invite us for a drink after work and this was the end. My friend diner mate told him hi was not here for a date and the tall server got serios asking why not? Later on another friend of mine say u may expect those things all the time in Keens. Food- you will not be dissapointed and bored and u will find yourself constantly go back for more.Service-i had to bad experince.

Best steak, pricey, but definitely worth it. I've been to Keens Steakhouse at least a dozen times, and once my steak was over cooked. I learned that you should not worry about sending it back, they will take good care of you, they even took my sides back and gave me a fresh batch so my food would all be hot at the same time. Most of the people I go with tend to order the Rib Beef, I think cause it looks like a bigger piece, and it's less expensive, but personally I love the Filet mignon, it melts in your mouth, it's so buttery and tender, worth the extra bucks!!

It can be argues that Keen?s hosted the official first meeting of the Steak Club 7 ever. On our prior visit, Keen?s rated high in every category but the steak. It?s possible that the excitement of steak club created too high an expectation. Regardless, the call was made to return and it was one hell of a call!

We were sat upstairs, which if you ever go to Keen?s, is the only way to go. If you?ve been there you know their ceilings are covered in churchwarden pipes (made famous by their long stems) and there is a great story about them on Keens website. It makes for a great atmosphere. But back to the food?

The blue cheese on my wedge salad was fantastic and had some ingredient I couldn?t name that made it all the better. The strip that I was served was a horrible cut, that was covered in fat and even braised improperly. I called the waiter over to send it back and before I could finish my sentence, he sincerley apologized and took my plate. In less than 5 minutes the server returned with one of the best pieces of meat I have ever seen or eaten! It was fantastic and he was very, very apologetic. The sides were delicious, especially the carrots in brown butter. Washed down with a nice Chilean red blend, Keen?s came back hard and with a massive improvement.

I?ll give Keen?s at 4.5 out of 5 and an A++ for service.

First, the good. Keens came highly recommended by a work associate. My wife and I ate there last night, 17 March 2008. The atmosphere is great. It feels like a place that should be serving no nonsense red meat. We loved the old school clear light bulbs with the crazy filament, seemed as if Edison dropped them off that morning.

All of the food was presented well. The porterhouse for two had a giant bone sticking straight up that made my mouth water. My wife's short ribs looked awesome. Prime meat is prime meat, the texture on the slightly overcooked medium rare steak was great.

Now for the not so good. This steak had no flavor. The short ribs had no flavor. The creamed spinach had no flavor. The only thing we ordered that was passable was the Yukon gold mashed potatoes, and we still had to add salt and pepper. I honestly believe that there was no seasoning added to anything other than the mashed potatoes. And as anyone who appreciates good food knows, you can't make the seasoning right at the table. You must salt and pepper before/during cooking. It really ruined our whole meal.

The service was average at best. Our waiter was prone to long disappearances. When the runners came with our mains we had to clear our own appetizer and salad plates. That is unacceptable. No one ever asked us how our meal was. We decided to just deal with it since the meal was being expended anyway.

The bill with 15% tip came to $253. We had gone to Babbo the night before and our bill with 20% tip was $260. Babbo makes Keens look like McDonald's. They are not even in the same league.

I honestly hope that we just had a bad experience. There were many people there on a Monday night and mediocre restaurants charging top dollar don't last long. Keens has been around since 1885.

I have had a lot of great meals in my life. I have eaten at a lot of "fine" restaurants but none have catered to my wants and desires in a "fine" meal like Keens. If you enjoy the best cuts of beef, the best reds, and the best single malts this is the place for you. Oh, and don't forget to pick up a cigar on the way out.

The porterhouse at keens seems to be diffrent from the most of the steakhouses we have been before, but it taste good, desserts are huge and not so pricy for a steakhouse.Good steakhouse and i would like to go back any time soon.

The hostess and waiters/waitresses were very pleasant. We stopped for a late lunch and we were not dressed for an "uptown" type meal. The ambiance was interesting. Alot of antique type photos on the walls of people in victorian/colonial times. The ceiling is covered in old smoking pipes...read their website for the history on that. I ordered the Filet and it was "fantastic". I have eaten at many steak places such as Ruth Chris and this was comparable. The dessert we ordered was a butterscotch ice cream sundae....TO DIE FOR(butterscotch I feel is a bit underrated). All was very reasonably priced. I wanted to bring back home some italian pastries and asked the waiter where was a good place to go. He said he would ask the other waiter since he is more familiar with the area. The other waiter came to our table and referred us to Mangenaros on 9th. Excellent service! Will definately visit again on my next train ride to the city.

I was in the mood for a great steak, my buddy John recommended that I try this restaurant which is near his office. It was the first time I dined in this restaurant. We were a party of 3. All had a wonderful meal and a great time. Our wait-staff Mr Sonny was welcoming, efficient & professional. I ordered his recommended Lobster Bisque, Prime Filet Mignon (I had it plain, and Sonny had the meat sliced for me,) Keens's Creamed Spinach & Mashed Potatoes (creamy). Totally delicious! For dessert I had the Iowa Caramel Custard (Sonny decided to serve it just warm enough because he remembered I had mentioned that I was bleaching my teeth and felt a little sensitive, amazing guy.) John & Hedi both enjoyed their T-bone and Sirloin. They said the meat was very flavorful. Their desserts: Creme Brulee & Cheese Cake .We were very happy with the food and felt pampered! Would surely go back.

other than that rudeness, i enjoyed the decor, the food was ok, mutton was ok,

We were lucky enough to google this restaurant, looking for a nice meal before heading over to Madison Square Garden. We were seated promptly (we had a reservation). We sat away from the bar which was nice and quiet. Our waiter, Jason B, was extraordinary, making the meal even better. The food was great. The caesar salad and crab cocktail were good. The steak for two was excellent. The sides of green beans and hash browns were very good. The cheesecake a winner. Overall a great meal. We only wish we knew about this restaurant a long time ago so we didnt have to have so many mediocre meals in the area. At least now we are assured we will have a great meal when heading over to MSG.

Keens may not get as much buzz as Lugers, Palm, Homestead, etc., but it deserves to. This place is a carnivore's delight. Though they tend to offer quality over quantity, the steaks are expertly prepared and seasoned perfectly. The staff is ok, could be stronger. The bar selection is very good, but leans towards traditional and lacks a contemporary flair. But again I stress that the steaks and chops are exceptional. If you are out to impress clients and the like, take them to Brooklyn. If you want to have an amazing steak, Keens is a place to try. The sides were ok.

Really like the atmosphere in this restaurant. The wine list is really great. It has so many selections and they seem to be so carefully chosen. Not as intimidating as I thought it would be.Steak was tasty and big enough. What more to say? I have had far worse in "better" places. I would recommend this place happily.

Keen?s Chophouse (now, apparently renamed Keen?s Steakhouse) is simply the best. We go there frequently and have never yet been disappointed with anything we have ordered. The beef and mutton are spectacularly good and the beef portions are so gigantic that we always end up taking a lot home in a ?doggie bag.? Little do they know that we, the humans, are the doggies. Keen?s is an unadvertised hidden treasure of New York City - unadvertised because the place is packed with people who have been going there within their family for literally generations upon generations. You see, Keen?s has been at it at this same location since something like the 1860s, when the Garment District was the Theater District. The place is full of memorabilia from a time before your grandparents were born and it?s all genuine. I want to stop in one day just to walk around and read it all, because it?s like a museum. Don?t miss Keen?s: It is a never-to-be-forgotten experience. One block from Macy?s and Just steps from the B, D, F, V, Q, N, R, W, and PATH trains (Herald Square Station, take the northeastern-most stairs out of the station and you?ll be right around the corner from Keen?s).

Love it, love it, love it... did I say I love it? This is probably my favorite steakhouse in the city. The service is excellent, the decor very interesting and historical, the wine list great and the food delicious! Last time we were there we had a slight wait (with a reservation) nothing that we really even noticed. We were in the bar pecking away at the trivia questions. We didnt notice the wait, but the hostess did. She came over and apologized that we had to wait. Then a manager apologized as well. Then bought us a round at our table. All that because of a 5 minute wait - that is paying attention to the details! Prices are up there, but they are for any steakhouse, but well worth the money. I would recommend this place to everyone.

My son and I dined at Keens for the first time on January 31, 2006 and we were quite impressed with the steaks. The atmosphere is definitely Old New York and the clay pipes on the ceiling are amazing. Our double porterhouse was huge and cooked perfectly, with the right amount of marbleing and great beefy flavor. The side of hash browns was good, but small portioned. Excellent salad and cold, briny oysters made for a memorable meal. The bar is great and there are over 200 Single Malt scotches to choose from plus very knowledgable bartenders. The staff is friendly but our waiter was only so-so. All in all, this is one of the finest steakhouses in New York.

Took a friend to Keens for his birthday, and have to say that this place is awesome!!! I ordered the Aged Prime New York Sirloin Steak and it was cooked to perfection. The Aged Prime Porterhouse for Two was also delicious. As an appetizer, I definitely recommend the Fresh Oysters on the Half Shell, as long as your not allergic. A little loud during peak hours, but calms down alittle after 9:00. Since I made the reservation at 8:00pm, the noise wasn't that much of an issue. Highly recommended and would definitely return again.

This is not one of the more popular steak houses of New York, but it has consistently served me the best steaks. The oysters, calamari, and shrimp are great appetizers. The porterhouse for two or the filet mignon cannot be beat. The best sides are the creamed spinach and the sauteed mushrooms. For desert, you should try the dark chocolate cake, the ice cream sundae, or the cheesecake. Everything is tasty here. I did find the asparagus to be very overcooked on more than one occasion. The atmosphere of the restaurant is nice. They have pipes mounted on the ceiling, which is supposed to be the largest collection of its kind. Nice place to take visitors.

A great steakhouse - my husband went here last year for his bachelor party dinner and we had a celebratory group dinner here recently. Drinks, service and food are excellent - the filet mignon and sides are melt-in-your mouth delicious. The sole was very tasty but the grilled shrimp could've been better. Overall, outstanding steak in a cool, old New York atmosphere.

Portions are generous, so be careful when ordering an appetizer! The mutton is HUGE and the steaks are thick and prepared to perfection! Don't forget to order a baked potato!
Lobster and fish is fresh and delicious as well!
There is also a fantastic wine list -- it'll take you about 25 minutes to go through that alone.
Reservations are a must but midweek you can take your chances.
The bar closer to 6th Ave is a bit of old New York and should not be missed -- either before or after dinner.
