I celebrated my bday there and it was the best bday party I ever had. They gave me a complimentary bottle of vodka for me and my girlfriends after dinner. Food was really tasty, and portions were generous. I would repeat for sure!!!

I spent new years here with my wife. I had made a reservation for my wife and myself only but yet instead of being charged for two plates at 160 each I was charged $1600.00 and till this day I am having trouble getting my money back. they claim that i have to wait for them to collect the money from another couple in my table so that i can get my money back. A couple whom my wife and i have no connection. Because they failed to charge them adequately i ended up paying 10 x more than what i was suppose to pay and the managers Mateo and Amir go back and forth as to this issue. I don't recommend this place whatsoever, the food was horrible on top of that and they wouldn't serve shots if i already had a drink on my table. This place is horrible. if you don't want to get robbed and served bad food don't go here.

Such a lovely restaurant

I was so surprised and pleased today! My pick of a lunch venue in a part of town that is less than exciting was a big hit! Room was lovely - not noisy - service was attentive and food excellent.I recommend it highly!

I heard somewhere that it was good manners to give a compliment for every criticism. So here we go:

1.a Nice ambiance
1.b We had made reservations based on the web-published Restaurant Week Menu. We had to request it, were told " it's not Restaurant Week, it's Prix Fixe.". When we were given completely different menu than the web menu: "oh yes that is from last year, we really need to change that"

2.a. Restaurant is flexible with substitutions
2.b. They were out of the pasta I wanted, I was offered a different shape pasta (fine by me) with the recipe intact, then was told 15 minutes later that they were out of the main ingredient in the recipe, and would I like to substitute shrimp for sea urchin? UH, yeah, they taste EXACTLY the same, except for flavor, texture, odor... Other than that, exactly.

3.a. In the summer, a cooling spritz is refreshing
3.b. An entire glass of water was spilled in my partner's lap by a staff member

4.a. Wild boar (cinghiale) lasagna was very tasty
4.b. Swordfish pasta needed salt, or olives, capers, or lemon zest.... Flavor?

5.a Clean bathrooms are important
5.b. The marble floor was nice and slippery after the man mopped it... In the middle of dinner service!?!?!?.....and in his zealousness with the mop the toilet seats were also nice and wet, and in that kind of a restaurant, I don't really need to see the can of Glade on the toilet paper dispenser.

6.a. They gave us a 10% discount on the bill for the experience of wet lap dining, and free espresso.
6.b. They charged me for the original dish I ordered and that they were out of, instead of the one I ended up eating (which was $2 less actually).

7.a. $25 for a glass of wine!!? Bravo!
7.b. $25 for a GLASS of wine!!!!?!?!?

I have recently went to Salute for dinner about a month ago and loved my entire meal from their fresh pasta and orata special. I heard about their brunch menu and had to try it. I came back and tried the eggs benedict. OMGG!! What a classic. Their poached eggs were to die for and the fresh fruit had to be sliced moments before it arrived on my plate. And to top it off a complimentary glass of Prosecco.

The mushroom and spinach pizza is the tastiest thing ever. I also had the minestrone soup which was also amazing. I can't wait to go back! It was so chic inside too! YUMMM

We were invited here by native New Yorkers who admitted that they had never been here for weekend brunch. When we arrived, the place was completely empty. The servers were milling about with nothing to do and a very vacant-eyed hostess did most of the waiting on us. She was extremely uncharismatic, unfriendly and unknowledgable. It seemed as though everything was a pain and that she literally had no empowerment to do anything. She didn't even know how to make a substitution and charge for it. Frankly, the menu was an odd mix of items, most of which were not even remotely Italian and most shocking of all, the bread was inedible! $100 for some eggs, a pizza and a bottle of San Pelligrino and bad service is really inexcusable, especially in these difficult economic times. Oh, and the decor was simply 80's in its garrishness.

One of my favorite restaurants in the city. While it's pricey, it's one of those restaurants I like to go to for special occasions.

This restaurant, located at 39th St. and Madison Avenue in Murray Hill, tends to be on the pricey side, but it is a totally upscale dining experience. Staff is attentive, service is great and the food is in a league of it's own. I've had the Farfalle con Salmone, salmon in an alfredo sauce, and it was heaven!! You can also order for take out and the portions are humongous, without being too overly priced. This is one of those places you don't mind spending your money for some excellent quality.

my family and i just came from salute 8/30/08.. i could not believe that the veggi lasgna came out cold and with no flavor.. there was no bold taste or flavor..i when i told them the dish was cold they simply took it away and reheated the same dish.. they offered a very passive apology and no explanation. i was very upset that this high end, over priced resturant had a below average dishes..

I came here for lunch during Restaurant Week. The place was packed. Service was acceptable, but not wow. Portions were very small, but adequate. We also had to ask for the Restaurant Week menu as well. I wasn't impressed enough by my dishes to want and try the real menu, although it looked great (but super pricey). The decor is modern, but definitely a tight space. The bar looks like a good place to get a drink after work, but it will be tight. The place was hopping at lunch during the work week. It looks like they have a great wine list, but I didn't order any. Overall my opinion is mixed. I was expecting to be really impressed. I'm just glad I didn't pay a whole lot!

Went to "Salute" for "Restaurant Week". Made a res. for 2 but dragged another friend at last minute (who didn't want to eat, but I persuaded her to come and have a glass of wine with us). They accommodated our increased party and dinner started off ok. My friend and I decided we would have the "Restaurant Week" menu (which we had to ask for, btw) as it sounded quite appealing. We also ordered a $70 bottle of wine. Got our apps quickly, and entree then straight away. Everything was quite tasty and I was quite enjoying everything. Quickly after our entree, our dessert was brought to the table. Then, the restaurant suddenly appears to get very busy, with people waiting to be seated at the hostess station. Next thing, our check was slapped down on table without us even asking for it - and we weren't even ASKED if we wanted coffee. I was appalled. This, to me, is the worst thing a restaurant can do. As part of my job, I regularly organize business dinners - big and small. I love getting the opportunity to sample these restaurants when I can, so I may recommend for future use. I will not be going to "Salute" again nor will I be booking any of my corporate dinners there. What a pity, because the food is actually quite good.

I sat at the bar and had lunch here, a surprisingly pleasant experience. Just the olives and large chunks of fresh parmesan cheese served before you start are worth the experience (though the bread wasn't quite as good). Nice selection of wines, friendly staff, impeccably dressed. My seafood salad was delicious.

Restaurant week. Waited 15 mins to be seated. Horrible food. Served cold bread (as they insisted the bread were just off the oven), Campbell soup, and baked chicken which were dried like matchstick. The service was simply unprompted. We waited the entrees for 20 mins after finishing the appetizer. I will never go again!

The interior is nice but noisy. The service is neglectful. It took 20 minutes before I was given a menu or even water. The food was average at best. I ordered the Chicken Breast and it was leathery and dry. The waitress never came back to see how it was so I had to flag down someone else and send it back. I then got the salmon which was moist but VERY bland. The tiramisu was the best part of the meal but was still frozen in the center. I will not be going back to Salute.

Salute boasts some of the best Italian dishes in Manhattan, but with a new twist. You won't find heavy sauces and pounds of meat here. The light, crisp takes on Italian classics makes Salute reasonable for both lunch and dinner, at least in terms of food. Your wallet won't be happy, but your taste buds will!

No wonder we could get a last minute Sat. reservation for 8 people during the holiday season. This place is overpriced and the staff is flat out RUDE. We would have gotten better service at Applebees. The space is nice but there is no way Salute! will stay in business long with the way they treat their customers. The server mixed the entrees up (my husband didn't realize it and started eating and so did our friend). When it was discovered the waitress just switched the entrees and said "hope you are not afraid of getting coodies". Unbelievable when the entrees are $40/each. This is just one example of the terrible service we received. As for the food, you should probably save your $$ and just go to Olive Garden.

I recently went to Salute with a few friends this month. They have a beautiful dining room, but also a wide open bar area overlooking Madison ave. The same menu is served everywhere and it was a beautiful night, so we decided to sit out in the bar. We had a very pretty and personable waitress taking care of us. Everything from the food to the drinks was worth the price. Especially the great wine and food recommendations from our waitress. The staff is on top of things and seems to have great knowledge of the food served, the wine (there was a HUGE menu) and service steps. I used to be a server in my youth, so Iknow when I experience a bad time, and this was GREAT! I will recommend this place to anyone.

Pathetic portions...I have lived in NYC/NJ for 7 years and this was the worst dinner I have ever experienced. Went on last day of Restaurant week and I ordered Veal Marala off regular menu and it was leathery and more like pork than veal. My wife paid $35 for the Restaurant week prix fixe with small salad, the TINIEST portion of pasta I have ever seen and a bite of Tira Misu. When we complained to waitress about portions, she said pre fixe was "smaller" than normal. Seemed like her and Manager snickered in the corner about the complaint and manager never came to address it....over paid for dinner and drinks, left and will NEVER return. Even regular menu is WAY over priced and food sub-standard.

Had their "Restaurant Week" menu since we had plans to be in the area. It appears that they want to discourage people from having the restaurant week menu - you have to specifically ask for it. Then when you order off the restaurant week menu, the portions are very, very, tiny. I had soup (small cup) and pasta (tiny appetizer portion) followed by a small dessert. When I asked the server about the portions, his response was "Restaurant Week menu is for the tourists and we keep it small". I found this response rather appalling. Don't they think that New Yorkers try out new places during the restaurant week too? Will avoid this place going forward. Food was average and no better than neighbourhood places that are 1/2 their price.

My first time at the restaurant last week, I walk by many times on my way to work. The first time I walk in, it looks like a nice place, white leather chair and well-dressed waiters. We had a group of 7 and they only can accommodate us at the table next to the kitchen with hardwood chair and a lot of noises. We asked for a quieter place, but they don't have any large table. The service is good, but the food is very plain. The appetizer is over-cooked-burned shrimp, the spaghetti taste like out of a can, and the only dish tasted OK is desert. Olive Garden taste much better and cost halves as much. To summarize it all, Salute is over priced, poor tasted food, good service, not recommended for large group and expects to be noisy.

I've been to Salute few times. Good food, but i still think that when someone orders spagetti with seafood, they would expect a plate with spagetti with the seafood, not a plate of seafood topped with some spagetti!!! Last week I sat at the bar and ordered two glasses of sparkling wine, not looking at the menu (i never got it). When I asked if I could order some food, the server answered: "If it's not eleven yet!!!". In the end I asked for the checked and my bill for the two glasses of wine came to $61 !!!! I would expect to be warned next time if a glass of wine costs more that 20 dollars, wouldn't you?

Been to this place 3 times in last two months and let me tell you everything was fantastic!! Most recentlt was there on a Thursday night they had a great band playing in the bar area--the bartenders were very friendly and accomodating--We had the antipasta appetizer which is put on display as soon as you walk in a very appetizing selection--all of the staff were very friendly even the chef standing by the kitchen who took the time to make eye contact and say hello. Salute will definitely be mine and my coworkers hang out from now on!!! Thank you to the staff and management at Salute for doing it right!!!!

I have been there twice for dinner, and both times left me equally satisfied. The food is perfect (pasta, pizza, tiramisu) - simple and delicious. But I was especially impressed with the service. The staff was attentive, but discreet. It was like magic - the moment I was done with my dish, and not a second earlier, the waiter appeared to pick up my plate and see if I needed anything else. Also, even though it's a high-end, beautiful restaurant, it doesn't feel in the least pretentious. Go there to remind yourself why Italian food is considered one of the most delicious in the world.

Pros: food, atmosphere

Cons: somewhat expensive

Had a group dinner at Salute and the owner was kind enough to help us find a band. The food was outstanding - and what a surprise to find out the chef is a contestant on Top Chef! He even came out to meet my guests - what a charmer! The atmosphere is relaxed yet elegant, and service was fantastic. Can't get enough of the Ossobuco, it's the best I've had in the city. Heard the band is playing on New Year's Eve. I'm going back.

Pros: Convenient to Penn Station as well as Grand Central

Overpriced, overrated, and in need of some Customer Service 101, the food isn't too bad but DEFINITELY not worthy of its prices. I ordered a salmon dish that came with free tomatoes in place of the actual salmon and the waitress merely said "Ohh, sorry"...can't even begin to express my disappointment with that aspect of the evening. Avoid if you can actually make plans elsewhere, but acceptable as an impromptu after-work dinner or last resort.

Went to salute! For dinner with some clients on a Tuesday night - 6:30 ish peaceful when we checked in, Service was as if I we were eating at a 4 star restaurant they knew I was there with clients and stayed back and took care of us like they been doing this for years. Appetizer, Fresh pasta, fish and steaks were on the money. The dessert list was too big for me to choose just one. By the time we were ready to leave the place was jumping, so we stayed and had a drink in their Bar which by the way opens up to all of Madison ave.
Very cool feature. Ive been around to too many Italian restaurants; I now know why its the new hot spot!

Very boring sort of ... Italian food.... Except for the name I haven't seen anything Italian there, let alone the food.... very boring, not the real Italian food you would expect if you are Italian or if you have ever being to Italy... I guess it works for midwesteners tourists....
Crowded, noisy, very very slow service..... overprised!!! rather get a burger somewhere else....

Recently I had heard so many great things about Salute. So we went there last week and to be honest it was good but far from great. The appetizers were delicious and the highlight of the meal. The Calamari was really good and the Antipasta appetizer was excellent. The main dishes were good, the ravioli de manzo was just ok. The wine selection as well as the service were very good. Again, its a good restaurant but there are several better Italian restaurants in the city.

I went here with my boyfriend 2 weeks ago. We had wanted to eat at Salute for quite a while. It always seemed like a popular place after work and on the weekends. We were pleasantly surprised with a $50 four course menu, which is apparently available every Sunday evening. Start with an appetizer (soup/salad). Then antipasti bar, entrée (not the least expensive items from the menu!), and finally dessert. The best part of this deal...wine is included!
The food was excellent and our server(s) were very professional and attentive. The main course took a while to arrive, but it was delicious! We will definitely return (even if it's not Sunday)!

I took my entire office to Salute last night (22 of us). We had a superb experience. The place is lovely, and the service was PERFECT. We had none of the usual "large party snafus" like cold food that comes in shifts or lots of forgotten items. The servers were always there when we needed something, and everything was always where it should be on the table. The wine list is large and well constructed. The sommelier recommended very good wines and didn't push the upsell too hard. (he did try though -- just doing his job.) The food is quite good, although I wouldn't call it revolutionary or even excellent. Everyone enjoyed their meal though, which is very hard to accomplish with a party of 22. I can recommend the calamari appetizer, cold lobster salad, and the sea bass. So, for large parties -- this place is my pick.

Amazing flavor and freshness. The calamari was crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. Gnocchi and Ravioli were original and flavorful. The service was terrific. This is my new favorite Italian restaurant.

I really don't understand why this place has gotten so many positive reviews. I was there on a Wednesday (not so busy) and the service was sloooooooow, the food mediocre (too salty), and the wine list unimpressive.

Okay Italian, not sure why all in this review are raving? Service was good and a pretty nice atmosphere but the whole fish special was not great (not to mention about the size of a sardine). Pizza was good but not as good as many other places (try Gonzo).

This restaurant has a special place in my heart. First time I was there was Valentine's Day. This is where I was proposed to. Excellent food, great service & atmosphere. Definitely should be on the top of your places to go enjoy an evening of Italian cuisine!

What can I say? Dragged here kicking and screaming having had 2 earlier bad experiences. I was astounded - what a change in atmosphere and more importantly, service. (Check my earlier review of 3/14). The food was fantastic and the gorgeous Ashara and Mirlanda made us feel so welcome and so special. The complete opposite from previous visits. I am glad to report that they have got rid of that horrible guy and even the staff seem so much happier. I can now say that this has gone from THE worst restaurant experience I have had in NYC to one of the best in terms of both food and service. Keep it up - we will definitely be back.
