Message from Triomphe New York

The name says it all at this peaceful French Eclectic yearling. The superb cooking is enough of a surprise that advocates talk it up for both business and romance.

Editorial by Citysearch

The Scene
This intimate room (only 11 tables) in the renovated Iroquois Hotel is subtly swank: gentle light flatters and soft music swings. Charming and capable young servers don't need to rush because they never have far to go. Quietly, you feel attended to.

The Food
There are no avant-garde ingredients or novelty combinations on this French-inspired menu; everything is done with grace, balance and care. If it wasn't so refined, you might call it comfort food. Sauces and reductions are a strong point and vegetables taste of the garden. Acorn squash wontons in herb broth, rabbit "coq au vin," and roast lamb with pancetta are all excellent choices. Little touches that appear at first to be decorative frills--from a thatch of spicy sprouts on top of the roast lamb to the dense raspberry puree painted under the tarte Tatin--add strong, clear flavors, perfectly matched to the dishes.

Key Points

  • Theatre District Restaurant
  • Chef Steven Zobel
  • French-American menu

The Inside Scoop

  1. What to Drink - If you order dessert--and you absolutely should--don't miss the list of after-dinner drinks, including an impressive selection of ports and grappas.

Best kept secret in Midtown

by LA12

Everything from the wait staff to the cuisine and the wine are top notch. My husband and I love to go for pre-theatre dinner, and we have never been disappointed. Definately recommend it.

Pros: Excellent Seasonal Menu

Cons: Small space, but it is Manhattan after all

great dinner

by henrybcn

It's pricey but worth it especialy if you can manage to make this a "business" dinner. The service is amazing, wines are amazing, and the food amazing. The portions are a bit small and everything is generally overpriced but the whole package makes it a great dinning experience

Heavenly food, great service and ambience

by curlygurlnyc

We have been here twice now and could not be happier. The food is absolutely heavenly: sophisticated without being over the top or too complicated. We were swooning particularly over the scallops, venison and lamb, but all our selections were wonderful. Wine offerings made beautiful pairings, dessert did not disappoint, and I appreciated the fine selection of loose-leaf teas. Service was exactly right: friendly but not intrusive, knowledgeable and available. We like to sit in the bar area, which does not feel cramped. Decor is also just right. This is an intimate environment for a date or a couple of good friends, a marked contrast to Boulud's bustling Bistro Moderne a few doors down which is all expense-account diners. Triomphe is now our first choice for dinner in the Theater District.

Very romantic and amazing staff!

by izzodesh

I proposed to my wife here back in Feb 2005 and the staff was amazing.
They helped with my plan and even allowed me to use the entire back room for the proposal.
Great food and great service!

Pros: great service and food

Cons: none

Truly outstanding cuisine coupled with discreet service and a casual environment

by gekko1982

Truly amazing cuisine. While the menu may stick to "basics" the combinations are thoughtful and unique.

While the price rating ($$$$) may be somewhat accurate, there are many options within the price range and the wine list features MANY excellent, affordable wines.

Environment: Upon reading the menu, one might think the interior would be stuffy and uncomfortable - which is certainly NOT the case. The staff is non-intrusive and very accomodating. While the dining room has superior detailing (crown moldings, tiered cieling) fellow restaurant go-ers range from casual to formal.

Pros: Excellent ambience, oustanding food, discrete service

Cons: none

Unexpectedly great restaurant

by carlson_b

Small space, but very friendly - both the atmosphere and the staff. Some nice French wines on the list - even some reasonably priced older vintages. Scallops were very nice but the perfectly cooked ribeye with a phenomenal spinach-based sauce stole the show - probably one of the best steaks I have had in my life and a lot of food. Desserts were also good (though not superb) and the overall experience was top notch. I would definitely recommend Triomphe to anyone - and reservations don't appear too hard to get (at least during the week) so that's even better.

Pros: Great food, friendly service, pretty good value

Theater-District Gem

by luigilinquino

What a lovely little restaurant. Small, but charming ambiance. Excellent service. Very good food. I've been here 6 times and will keep coming back whenever I'm in the neighborhood. I would like to see a little more variety in the menu, though. It doesn't change much, and could get boring if you visit often.

Pros: Food, service, ambiance

Cons: Menu variety

Such a nice staff.

by celticait

I arrived there, and from the second I walked in the door the host, server and GM were nothing short of amazing. Being a young girl, you sometimes can get bad service, but they treated me like I was walking in there with an AMEX black card. The wine list was great and the cheese sampler was INCREDIBLE. We were checked up on often and got anything we asked for quickly. I def. reccomend.

Pros: staff, wine list, cheese sampler

Good food, but too cramped

by jeanie95tt

We decided to try this place for our pre-theatre dinner because of the great reviews here and on other websites. The food was good, but we were disappointed at how small and cramped the space was. We were seated very close to other people, so the setting was not very romantic or intimate at all. If you're looking for romance, don't come here during peak times. Also, service was a bit slow, and we didn't have enough time to get dessert before having to leave for the 8pm show (we were seated at 6pm).

Pros: Food, proximity to Theatre District

Cons: Small, cramped space

Great choice for French.

by nybengoshim

Real value here. Several times to this stellar French venue in midtown. Signature dish scallops - silky mushroom deglaze, scallops themselves beautifully textured-pan-seared to crunchy perfection in beautiful contrast to the natural texture and juiciness of the scallop. Very artful. Muscovy duck-super ingredients and purity of flavor here. Attention to detail, integrity of natural flavors, and excellent service are the hallmarks here. Kudos to Zobel and staff! Not to mention the winelist - try a Nicholas Potel 2002 Burgundy for $36. Wow!

Pros: Great value for price, wine list, intimate, attractive

Tired Voyeur

by jeffacme

After a long day working in the city this out of towner loves to sit at the bar and graze off the Triomphe menu. The little bar bustles with activity as the theatre crowd and hotels guests come and go. Watch the city gear up and let the bartender select the wine and drinks for each course. First class dining in a first class town.

Excellent across the board

by n9md

I hosted a group of 11 adults last June. Every aspect of our wining and dining experience was superb. Youthful, exhuberant, friendly, attentive service. Magnificent food. Marvelous wine selection (correctly poured). Charming ambience. And excellent value, considering the mid-town location. As an aside, I find that reviewers' comments regarding value (too expensive, overpriced and so on) must be taken with a grain of seasalt, since that is so often a subjective appraisal based on one's position on the socio-economic scale (i.e., annual income).

Pros: Everthing

Cons: None

waitstaff quite knowledgeable, in my opinion

by princesswolf

Rebuttal to previous post:
I frequent Triomphe and see waiters fielding ridiculous questions to provide service for guests. Last week, the poor waitress was asked about the reasoning behind the name of a wine bottle, nothing about the wine itself. Rather than shrug off the question, one of self-indulgent nonsense, she called the wine representative for the answer. The guest then chose another wine, butchering the name of the winemaker in the process, causing the waitress to have to ask the guest to point it out. For the previous poster's reference, I know for a fact that the Moulin de Lagnet is the ONLY red Bordeaux by the glass, so she could not have made that mistake you assume she made. More credit should be given to those that provide not only the transportation of your food, as you put it, but a large part of your overall dining experience.

Pros: excellent food, decor, exceptional service

A Winner

Triomphe is a wonderful place to dine if you're going to the theatre or not. The food is extraordinary, the service is friendly and professional, and the ambience is wonderful. It's a small and intimate place where the wait staff know what is being served. All four of us had different entrees and we were all delighted. The lamb and guinea hen are fantastic choices.

Pros: excellent food, great service, knowledgeable staff

Just Average

by adams_eating

We tried Triomphe for dinner before seeing a show. The food wasn't particulary French, but on average was good. Nothing truly memorable about the meal and no standout dishes. The wine list is competent. I tend to be rather picky, as I dine out a lot, and my companion seemed to enjoy her dinner slightly more than me, although she was not wowed. If you want a solid meal before heading down the street to Broadway, Triomphe definitely is one of the many good choices in the neighborhood. Although next time, I will try a different restaurant in the hopes that I will be wowed.

Pros: decent food

Cons: just OK

My Favorite Place

by phyllisberlin

The Triomphe Restaurant is my favorite restaurant. When we go into Manhattan, we always eat at the Triomphe. We have tried other retaurants but none come close to dining at the Triomphe. The atmosphere is wonderful, relaxing and comfortable. The service is terrific, very professional, polite, always consistently fast (especially important when you have a theater date) and they always know the menu and the specials. The food is superb, the best in the city. Hats off to Steve the Chef, he puts it all together and knows what he is doing.
It is a nice feeling to recommend Triomphe to others and entertain people there and know everyone finishes dinner with the same feeling - "Excellent" - right down to dessert.
I can't wait to go back.

Pros: Lovely Room, Great Service, Excellent Food

Cons: None

Great Food - Not so good service

by elamby

This restaurant is near where I work and is great for small gatherings. However, if you are looking for a table of 6 or more the service seems to suffer. All of our appetizers and entress arrived to the wrong person and at different times. We had to hunt our server down when an entree not ordered arrived.

If you are looking for solid good French cusine in a cozy atmosphere than this is the place!

A truly sublime dining experience

by adoban

A wonderful dinner...my companion had the seared corriander crusted grilled lamb rack in a port reduction with foie stuffed prunes and I had the buttermilk battered Atlantic cod fish. We were blown away by the taste of each dish...perfection. For dessert, we shared a wonderful blueberry pudding type cake(?), which, was equally impressive.

Pros: FOOD

Don't miss it!

by jimkav

The ambience, the service, and the food achieve a simple elegance. You won't find the forced mixing of as many exotic ingredients as possible that seems to be a competitive sport among chefs in trendy restaurants. You will find fresh, innovative flavors, and perfect preparations. The chicken is a rich delight. The sea bass is tangy and fresh. The filet is nearly fork-tender. The chef gets that perfect crisp-outside, juicy-inside taste with uncanny precision, and gives a pleasant flavor surprise in the seemingly simplest dishes.

Pros: delicious food, intimate settting, great service

Cons: , pre-theater crowding

Absolutely wonderful!!!

by angelx

Wanted to treat my bf to a nice dinner & a broadway show for our anniversary. Decided on Triomphe b/c it was close to the theatre and it also got good reviews on citysearch and they weren't wrong! We got there a bit early and the staff wasn't ready for us but we didn't mind b/c we got to wait by the beautiful bar. The room is small and intimate, which was really nice for us and our waitor was so nice. I had the veal cutlet and it was amazing. I could taste each flavor one at a time in my mouth. My bf had the filet mignon & quail (appetizer). We ended the meal with carrot cake. The bread at the beginning came with butter rolled in herbs and that was so different and so good! Definitely recommend this restaurant for a nice night out. I was impressed!

Pros: Very intimate & small, Food was fantastic, By theatre district

Understated Elegance

by equity6

We dined at Triomphe on March 26, 2004 before attending a show. The three of us all loved the experience. The decor is muted and tasteful. Our waiter was informed and professional. The orange infused Martini I had was delicious. All 3 of us had fish dishes - I had the sole which was heavenly and my wife and cousin enjoyed the sea bass. The quality and presentation were flawless. We did not feel rushed although we had to make an 8:00 pm curtain. The restaurant is small and intimate and a perfect place for a romantic dinner.

Pros: romantic, elegant, understated

A Must Go!!!!!!!!!

by Courtwend

If you are going to the theater you MUST GO HERE!!! Gorgeous tiny little room. Quite romantic. A menu that blows my mind. The scallops with foi gras... WOW!! Is the chef single???? The service is friendly but not obtrusive. It is a bit of a sleeper after the theater rush goes through, so if you are looking for a place that's pumping this isn't it, but if you want an elegant, charming, adult meal this is a definate hit!!!

Pros: food, Fire place, ambiance

Cons: quiet
