Expensive! I get the co-op idea. Co-op is supposed to be economical along with other things. Some time back when I visited it I found a lot of things marked up. Those very things were available elsewhere for a better price.

Honest Weight is the best place to shop in the capital region if you want local or specialty foods. They have a fantastic vegetarian deli and hot breakfast/lunch bar, a wonderful bakery that sells vegetarian and vegan baked goods, and a huge bulk department. Bring your own clean containers and have them weighed at the service desk to avoid being charged for bags/containers. You don't have to be a member to shop there, but you do get a discount if you are.

Pros: Great selection, friendly staff, local foods

Cons: Parking can be a challenge

I went for the first time recently. I was very impressed with the selection of gluten-free, vegan foods. They even had baked good! I will definitely be back as soon as I can!

Honest Weight Food Co-op (HWFC), open to the public, is a terrific place to shop. It now offers a wide selection local poultry and meats. Incredible selection of unusual products, including wheat-free and gluten-free products. Planning is underway for a brand new, larger store with more convenient parking. Many of the products available in other states at Trader Joe's, for example, are available at HWFC. Try it. Save gas. You'll like it.

Pros: Local Products, Cheese, Bulk Foods,

        Cons: Only one location

This is one of the few places to find reasonably priced organic and natural foods in Albany. You can buy both in small amounts and also in bulk. The staff are friendly and make good suggestions for vegetarian meals. If you are going for the first time, make sure you bring paper and pencil to record bar-code numbers, otherwise you will have to retrace your steps when you check out. Great place, hidden gem of the capital district.

Pretty much Albany's only option for shopping if you are into Organic and all Natural food and supplies. No meat or meat products - it is a vegan store for the most part. It has a decent selection, pretty good prices and a GREAT cheese department. Offers grocery, deli, produce, bulk, cheese, health and beauty aids, some pet supplies. A co-op, but it is open to the public. One of the only places I can find the cream top yogurt that I like. I would like it more if they sold meat, fish and poultry. prices are decent, especially with sales, even when not a member. Coupons accepted.
