If you like mice, go to Heidelberg for some live action. There were two different mice scurrying across the floor throughout our entire meal. The spaetzle is the worst spaetzle I've ever had--I should've made Kraft macaroni and cheese for dinner. My friends ordered the pork shank and jaeger sausage, they said it was o-kay. There are much better German restaurants in NYC, and the mice are better hidden.

My friends and i came for the famous glass boot of beer.Realizing they hired a new bartender(Troy). We been coming there for a long time and i just have to say,he is one of the most giving, caring, and genuine bartenders we ever met.I hope that he will succeed as an asset to the establishment.

This is a casual restaurant with adequate (not great) food and decent German beer. Perhaps the neighborhood (Upper East Side) is the reason why the prices are high for the food. Bread was stale. Portions were small for the prices. I had Jaegerschnitzel and a beer and the tab came to over $30 before the tip. On the other hand, the waitress was very polite but in most places outside of NYC this is the norm. I can do better in NJ.

Pros: Beer, service

Cons: Food is overpriced

We sat at the bar and asked bar menu
The bartender at the bar did not know bar menu and anyone else knew it
They charged two times more than bar menu and did not say sorry for it
This is the worst restaurant ever and should be closed this kind of lip off restaurant.
Worst restaurant forever!!

If you want to wait an hour for a beer, two for food, and never order a second beer - by all means eat here. Their service is consistently awful (read reviews anywhere about the place) and it's really not worth getting frustrated about it your whole meal. There are better German places in NYC with infinitely better service. Run! Run far away!

I enjoy the breaded Veil at Heidelberg. decent food a little pricey but portions are decent. Best thing about the place is the beer. Spatan Octoberfest is served year round. Place has a German feel with dark wood and red and white check table cloth.

Lots of meat, lots of beer, lots of sauerkraut or red cabbage, you can't go wrong! Be sure to get a 'boot full of beer"! You will not be disappointed!

went there last week for lunch, the only thing i can find that i did not like was the service at the bar, even though there were very few people sitting having lunch at the bar, i was rushed to order, i wanted to sit and just take my time, but the barmaid kept asking me if i was ready to order, the food was excellent, much better then rolf's on 23rd and 3rd. there is no comparison, the only other thing i can say that is negative is that they don;t fill your glass all the way up to the top when you order a drink, in other places they fill it up all the way. i go there every chance i get when i am up town its expensive but worth it.

The last of the German joints in Yorkville, this place has a great selection of German Beers (Obviously), but look deeper, and you'll find that there are some really cool german liqueurs beyond Jaegermeister. My favorite is one called Killepitch, but be careful, it packs a whallop! Insider Tip: The food here can be pricey, but the best deal is the "Bar Bratwurst" and the "Bar Potato Pancakes". You get a great meal for about 10 bucks, as long as you don't mind eating at the bar.

I came here once with five other family members. I had actually visited Germany last summer and as soon as we walked in, I felt as though I were transported right back to Deutschland. The walls were panelled with dark wood, Germanic decorations adorning them. The waiters were clad in the traditional German lederhosen. Beer was served in giant stines and 2 liter "boots." There were giant sausage platters, heaps of saurkraut, and potato pancakes galore. I ordered the Wiener Schnitzel a la Holstein (w/ a fried egg, anchovies, and capers). We also ordered a plethora of delectable side dishes: potato pancakes, saurkraut, German potato salad, etc. For dessert, I could not shy away from the Black Forest cake. All of this was certainly what one could call comfort food. The others in my party loved their meals as well. It was the perfect place to eat on a cold winter night. Our waiter was extremely friendly and even performed a magic trick of sorts, much to our amusement. I highly recommend that one should loosen their belt and sample the fare at the Heidelberg Restaurant.

This is the last remaining outpost for traditional German style food and beverage on the U.E.S. and I pray that it may live on for many years to come. Nothing particularly fancy here...just good basic German meat and potatos served by a waitstaff dressed in traditional folk attire (read lederhosen and heidi dresses). This is not food for the calorie/fat conscious crowd. This is a place to pull up a chair and get fat and happy.

My husband and I went to Heidelberg last night for dinner. The food were good but not great. The service was average - the waiter did not check in on our meals and did not even refill the water, but was a bit pushy on desert (we both ordered schnapps). When the bill came, we were shocked to find an over 20% tips on it. Displeased, but we didn't want to make a fuss on a Saturday evening so we paid the bill.

On the way out, I inquired about the 'practice' or 'policy' of adding tips to bills. The hostess was visibly embarrassed and said they only do this for big tables of over 6 people, which is common in New York. I told her we already paid up and gracefully left.

I'm not sure we'd go back again because of the sleazy waiter. It's a shame, really.

On a recent visit to NY we were looking for a German restuarant I used to enjoy on 86th Street when visiting my sister in Hoboken all too many years ago. Disappointed that it has since disappeared, we discovered the Heidelberg just around the corner and enjoyed a great lunch. The food was very good, the service was prompt and very friendly (potatoe pancakes were excellent) and of course the beer selection was outstanding. It's sad that it appears to be the last German restuarant in Yorkville and it makes me wish I lived in NY (among many other reasons) to help keep it viable.

This is a really fun place to have a very good meal when calorie content is not at issue. But that's the fun of it. Drink a lot of beer and eat a lot of meat and side dishes. In fact, you could do without the meat and order a bunch of the great sides such as the best potato pancakes, sauerkraut, awesom ecream spinch, and killer potato salad. (Or not, and order the insane meaty combo that includes like 5 different kinds of sausage for two people)

My friends and I love Heidelberg so much that we've created a tradition of "German Feast" each time we gather there. The huge list of German beers, the quaint and cramped ambience, the comical staff dressed in lederhosen, and the authentic German food makes dining at this restaurant a true experience. Portions are large and the platters for two or three more than enough food to share. Fabulous sauerkraut and red cabbage, great weinerschnitzel. Potato pancakes are yum, too. I recommend skipping an appetizer and just diving into your entree! Tables are limited, so call ahead to make reservations.

We went there last night Friday at about 9pm, and the place was great. Split right down the center is a long bar on the left, and the sit-down restaurant area on the right. The place is decked out for Oktoberfest. The patrons are cheery from the Live Polka music.

Almost has a tavern-like feel. The food is lean and doesn't make you feel logy. You'd be hard pressed to go there and be disappointed with the menu selections. A place where pretentious people go, this is definitely not.

Up to 2 Liters of a German beer. Family setting. Not quiet, but the Bavarian lederhosen-clad wait staff are friendly. Didn't see a dance floor, but could of easily. Decor is that of a tavern, with oil paintings. my girlfriend and I found it to be Romantic. Definitely a find worth many more visits.

As the last remaining German restaurant in Yorkville, Heidelberg has endured for a reason - the food is excellent, atmosphere pleasing, and dirndl and lederhosen-clad staff amusing.

Though weekday lunch time menu gets more bang for your buck, regular prices are sufficiently merited by the quality and cuisine.

The restaurant may be called Heidelberg, but the true origin behind this charming tourist spot is from the Bavarian culture. True to the traditional form of southern Germany's history, the waitstaff is outfitted in overalls, knickers, embroidered dresses, and other Bavarian garb that will make anyone feel like they've wandered in Munich for Oktoberfest. As far as the food goes, the menu stays true by including authentic German cuisine, but it definitely not was the best I've ever had. At those prices, the wine and food could certainly be better.

The live music is amusing, the food is pretty good, and the fresh draught beer is excellent. I thought that the sausages could be a bit more authentic, but they were still tasty, and the potato pancakes and baked Camembert are delicious. The service was also attentive and their prices are very reasonable.

Good stuff all around....kraut, potato salad, potato pancakes, mixed salad, wurst, etc. My only quibble was that my Warsteiner was served closer to cool than cold, as I prefer it. The best part about it, though, was the pig knuckle. I was leary of even trying it, but it came on the wurst combo platter so I took a bite. Wow....succulent meat fell off the bone and melted in my mouth. I'm not going back without ordering the pig knuckle.

Who knew German food could be romantic? Most people head to the Italians or French for their romantic evenings but we decided to make a switch....and we were more than glad. Heidelberg had great food, wonderful service and a relaxing and ROMANTIC atmosphere. I highly recommend it! Eat up and enjoy!

If I ever feel like re-living my Oktober fest days in Munich, I go here. And, if you have never experienced Oktoberfest, then this is a great introduction. Go there hungry and thirsty, if you enjoy drinking good beer and eating great German sausages then you must try the Heidelberg.

Went here for Xmas...Amazing Food...Great Prices for the quality and authenticity. I would suggest this place over Rolf's anyday! Spacious place (compared to other German places)...nice beer selection in HUGE mugs (40 oz?) I suggest the potato pancakes, Goose, Wurst plate, and turkey plate. The waitstaff dressed in trad. German garb...a nice touch

I made reservations a week in advance for a family dinner. They lost the reservation and could not have cared less. In fact they were hostile that they should even care. The food was fair, atmosphere not as fun as Rolf's and I would not recommend the place.

Although the old guy on the electric piano was funny.

As a German in the States you always happy to be able to eat "real" German food. The place is great, the prices are ok, the service could be faster, but most important, the beer is great! the food is great! If you're in NY, it's an experience, especially for Americans.
