I've practiced Bikram at various places over the years. This is a good studio, the instructors are attentive and knowledgeable, without being too "new age. " The new flatiron studio is nice, and the classes are not over stuffed. I would

Judgemental instructors that go completely against what Yoga is about! I would not practice in this studio even if they pay me to do so!

If you are looking for a new way to exercise and don't want to do traditional gyms and health clubs try Bikram. They have special new student pacakges and first-time only classes. The first time only classes help get you acclamated to the moves and techniques without feeling overwhelmed by intermediate/advanced students. They have locations all over the city, which makes it easily accessible. I will admit after the first-time student package the prices are steep, but it is fun to try if only for a month.

Bikram NYC provides proficient and altruistic yoga instructors that are available to teach in 4 different locations every 2 hours starting at like 6 am - so there is a time, a place, and an instructor for everyone. Instructors are human and therefore have individual personalities, so to expect that you will like every instructor equally is probably not realistic but there is no group of instructors more concerned for the well-being of others anywhere in Manhattan. Regular members reflect the optimistic and encouraging personalities that have been shaped and reinforced by consistent practicing.

As a beginning student, I am reminded by instructors that there are no expectations placed on a student to advance at a certain pace, yoga is a process that takes many years, not months, and therefore progress is not made immediately. Be honest with yourself, properly do whatever you are able to in class, come consistently and regardless of your baseline body shape, metabolism or athletic ability and self-improvement is inevitable.

Pros: Ability to use any of the 4 studios anytime. Thoughtful staff and members.

Cons: None

I had never done yoga before and was extremely skeptical about the benefits. My first class at Bikram was the first-timers class and it was wonderful. The instructor was very encouraging and informative, as well as truly calming. I loved it instantly and decided to go back. My second class, however, was less than great. The instructor knew it was my second time and was rude about my lack of skill. She told me I "had a lot to live up to" at the beginning of the class and continued to pick on me throughout (and not in a constructive manner). The entire class was nerve-wracking and I was unable to focus. I'm sure this was just a fluke, but my advice is definitely try it but come with a thick skin and be wary of the instructor. A bad one will ruin your experience.

Pros: Lovely staff, clean environment, friendly network of students

Cons: Potentially discouraging instructor

Great yoga for anyone willing to challenge themselves. The review below about "disgusting" men wearing skimpy shorts is just too ridiculous for words..its a 105 degrees in the room, they are supposed to wear what exactly? Yoga is not really the place for puritan values..
Overall, depending on the instrucutor, of course..it's an amazing experience.

For those of you who don't know what Bikram Yoga is, it is yoga that takes place in a very hot room, about 95 degrees. Plan on sweating like you never have before. The moves are not strenuous, but it is really the heat that gets to you. They have an intro package for new students, $20 for one week including mat rental. Otherwise, rentals for mats are expensive at $5 and another $2 for a large towel, which you definitely need.

I HAPPENED TO BE WALKING BEHIND THE TEACHER UP TO THE CENTER AND AFTER EXCHANING, "HELLOS" SHE LET THE CENTER DOOR SLAM IN MY FACE.
SHE THEN INSISTED THAT I RENT 2 MORE TOWELS,WATER, THEN TOLD THE REST OF THE CLASS THAT IF THEY NEED TO EXCUSE THEMSELVES BEFORE CLASS END THAT THEY ARE NOT TO RETURN. I WAS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE CLASS SINGLED OUT AS THE NEW PERSON. I WAS DISGUSTED THAT SEVERAL OF THE MALE STUDENTS DID NOT WEAR SHIRTS AND ONLY SKIMPY BOTTOMS.
THE ONLY MUSCLE SORNESS I HAD THE FOLLOWING DAY WAS IN MY NECK
BEING IN A 100 DEGREE+ ROOM WAS GROSS, AND MADE MY SKIN BREAK OUT VERY BADLY. TO CONCLUDE ONCE THE CLASS ENDED (LATE) THE TEACHER RUSHED OUT WITHOUT A PROPER CLASS ENDING AND GRABED A LARGE BAG OF CLOTHES TO SELL TO THE STUDENTS.

This is a fantastic place to do yoga. The staff is always friendly, the classes are hot and wonderful. I'd never done Bikram yoga until a friend brought me to class, and ever since then, I've been hooked! The studio has a wonderful, supportive atmosphere. Tricia's classes are especially good. And the students are also super-friendly - no attitude whatsoever.

I recently attended one of their classes and be careful with this type of "yoga" if you can call it that. The instructor was a raving lunatic who yelled at the class with such a snotty attitude that I almost left. I would never go there again. It was God AWFUL. And quite honsetly this practice can be very dangerous, not to mention it costs $20/ class- very high for a yoga class even by this city's standards.

This is by far the best Bikram yoga studio in the city -it just opened early 2002, so everything is nice and new. The instructors are great, especially Tricia -who knows all her students by name. I was doing yoga on and off since 1998, but this studio inspired to sign up for a yearly membership and quit the gym!
