From the moment I entered the bar I knew that I had found my new favorite spot! I was having a beer and the bartender asked if I had ever tried the bacon. Since it was my first time at Mark Joseph's I had no idea what he was talking

I live in the area and we used to freqent MJ's whenever we wanted a really good steak. The steaks are fabulous, so are the sides and the desert. BUT....The last few times we have been there it seems like the owner's children are running

I have lived in Manhattan for 5 years and consider myself a steak lover. I have finally found the ultimate steak lovers fantasy, MarkJoseph Steakhouse. It took me 5 years to find this place so I am sure there are many out there, who like me, are always looking for the ultimate steak and think they have found it. The steak is consistently perfect. I say consistently because I have gone back once a week for the last 5 weeks just to make sure 'it was that good' and every time I cut into the Porterhouse it is tender and bursting with flavor. The appetizers are consistently good. My favorites are the bacon, mozzarella and tomatoes and the hot seafood platter (you have to have a big appetite to enjoy this and your steak). The sides are basic but delicious. Save a little room because the MarkJoseph Special desert is a must have!

I had a great experience, good times great food!

Pros: great service, perfectly cooked steak, good sides.

Cons: tough to get to by public transportation.

.

Had the 16oz filet mignon, lobster ravioli w/ shrimp, whipped potatoes, and the fried calamari. Calamari was excellent with a great balance of squid and breading. Our side of whipped potatoes was the best I've ever had, and tasted very light. The lobster ravioli was so-so, they did not really seem like they were handmade. I felt the shrimp on the plate was the main focus of the plate, which was excellent. They were the largest I've seen in my life. The filet mignon was decently cooked for medium rare. The service was absolutely excellent as there were no problems with plate-sharing, and the server had plated our entrees for us separately at the table. Wine was poured consistently, and we weren't bothered too often at all. This place does tend to be out of the way and the cab driver we found had a bit of trouble finding the place. Overall a decent experience but a bit short of anything special.

Pros: Great service

Cons: Tucked away and difficult to get to

The porterhouse steak for two - My favorite. They must be using so much butter for it.. It is so buttery and so good!! Dip in the butter juice and dig in!! So wall street, traditional atmosphere. In southseaport. Great service. I like the old style bar too.

If you are among the few who like a steak M
edium, get ready for a piece or charcoal coming your way. They CANNOT cook it. I have been here four times and I specifically told the waiter NOT TO BURN THE STEAK, and always comes back with a very thick layer of charcoal which destroys the taste. They arrogantly try to explain how I am supposed to eat like that.

Unless you like your meat rare...dont eat steak there. (unless you like chewing charcoal!)

When we need to celebrate, and I'm in charge of selecting the spot, this is where we go. The meat is terrific, the service is excellent, and the sides are satisfying and rich. I love the franklin salad, which we tried to duplicate at home: what a HUGE amount of work that was, and of course it wasn't as good. We always have a great meal here. Sure it's pricy but this is a splurge meal in many ways. About one years ago we took a group of old friends here, and they're still talking about it, even the woman who is mostly a vegetarian. MarkJoseph is really, really good at what they do.

Consistency is what keeps bringing me back to Markjoseph Steakhouse! I look forward to the delicious Porterhouse - mashed potatoes and sauteed spinach- and have recently made it a tradition to have lunch delivered on Fridays to my office! Their lunch menu is terrific but I stick to the Porterhouse! It is to die for! Although there were some changes in the management a few years back ... most of the staff has remained the same since they opened. Ray - the new manager - is always a friendly face to see and makes everyone feel like a regular. MarkJoseph Steakhouse is what a traditional steakhouse should be!

I just had dinner at Mark Joseph Steakhouse with a bunch of friends and was very impressed. The staff was incredible. Our meals were outstanding. We loved our steaks and the sides were delicious. To top it off, I got the pecan pie for dessert, which was outstanding. They also have the greatest bartenders in town. Not only are they great guys but they make the best drinks in town.

I just found my new addiction! I heard alot about Mark Joseph from my coworkers and finally decided to try it out this weekend. I was pleasantly surprised to see an unsurpassed quality of food. I ordered the shrimp cocktail as an appetizer and the Shrimp were huge and tasty. I ordered my favorite steak, the porterhouse, and it came out on a sizzling hot plate. It was to die for. The sides were amazing also. Our waiter, Marty, suggested the truffle oil mashed potatoes. They were yummy. It was refreshing to finally have waiters that were on the ball and there when you needed them. The wine selection was outstanding. I'm a wine lover and was delighted to see all the great wines that I could choose from. I sat down with my bottle of Opus and enjoyed an evening of great food and atmosphere. A must try for all.

I had not been to this restaurant in some time since my company moved to Jersey City. I did, however, have fond memories of my experiences there so we decided to visit last Friday. I was extremely disappointed. All of the good things that I remember about this establishment are gone. Our drinks were horrible (my martini tasted like dishwater), the steaks were tough and grizzly and our waiter was quite rude and grunted at us in a manner that none of us understood. I did not recognize anyone so I did not know who to voice my issues with not that it would have mattered anyway. I recall when Mark Joseph was such a wonderful place where you were greeted by familiar happy faces and the food was just superb. What happened? Guess everything changes. Needless to say we will never be back.

Found this place after work on a Friday night. Went in for a drink and we were instantly treated to the amazing scent of sizzling beef! Our bartender John B. was great and when we said we had to succumb to our watering tastebuds, he made some great suggestions. Two guys next to us ordered the porterhouse for two and were drooling. We ordered 2 slabs of canadian bacon, huge slices of tomato and white onion, littleneck clams and the steak tidbits. It was fantastic. Here's the lowdown: Bacon was absolutely delicious. Thick slab slice grilled to prefection. Tomato and onion was suberb in it's simplicity. No sauce, dressing or anything. All that was needed was some S&P. Clams were perfect and the sauce was great and the extra horseradish on the side was a nice touch. Steak tidbits were tender and succulent, served on baguette rounds with tasty mozzarella cheese melted on it.

We can't wait to go back for a formal dinner. Nice atmosphere and the wait staff were very friendly.

Will definitely bring clients for lunch or dinner.

The food is always great regardless of whether you go for the steak or some other dish. Also, it is quiet so we can always here each other. This is especially nice when we are on a business lunch and don't want to be screaming details of deals.

Mark Joseph's Steakhouse is the best steakhouse my staff and I have ever eaten at. Service, appetizers and drinks (cosmopolitans) at the bar were phenomenal, seating for dinner was timely, servers were friendly, clean, professional, well versed with the food choices and the food was outstanding. Some of us had steak, others fish and all the sides were made to perfection as well. Unfortunately, we had no room for dessert - maybe next time! Afterwards,we had a great time walking by the seaport to burn off some of those calories! We would highly recommend this restaurant!

I was very impressed by the hostesses and waiters the were accomidating right from the beging. There is a very comfortable feelling.

More importantly the steak was incredible and all the sides are everything you would expect from a great steakhouse. When I think of going out with my friends for good steak, SEAFOOD and a good time, I think of Mark Joseph's.

My favorite place for steak! I've been to many of the Peter Luger want-a-be's and none come close to Mark Joseph's. Luger's is good but no seafood and really no choices. The daily specials offered at Mark Joseph's make every return trip a new experience in dining. I am no where near a wine expert so I rely on the knowledge of the friendly wait staff, the presentation and service is un-matched. Price wise I have paid more for less and as the saying goes you get what you pay for, I leave happy time and time again!

I have eaten at every Steak House in Manhattan over the years and I have finally found my home. I even waited to write this review till after I ate 15 meals, several lunch and the rest were for dinner. This place is consistently great!!! I am a Porterhouse Man but the Filet with Lobster Tails or meals I went with Lamb Chops have made me question my loyalty. The steak is always cooked to my request and the seafood is ALWAYS fresh. The Hostesses are welcoming and the Waiters are friendly. My Girlfriend even asks me to take her to MarkJoseph Steakhouse regularly, she is in-love with the Salads and the diversity of the menu which always has amazing Chilean Sea Bass, Grilled Tuna or Salmon for when she is not in the mood for a Filet which she admits being addicted to. Location is easy with their proximity to the FDR and next-door parking lot. Take a cab though, the Winelist is OUTSTANDING!!!

the meat here is jerky tough. the service was fastfood style - abrupt and without care. the ambiance dull and prosaic. the hostess was vapid, on entry and exit - no pleasantries offered. furthermore, after leaving a gratuity of over 15% i found that they tacked on a supergratuity for their unappreciated? service.

I have been to many steak houses in New York City before, but never have I left so satisfied. The ambiance was eclipsed only by the excellent service and succulent food. The bacon appetizer was delightful, and after my first bite of the sizzling porterhouse I had a smile that lasted the rest of the night. I highly suggest that you frequent this steakhouse. You won't be disappointed.

The atmosphere was set before I entered MarkJoseph Steakhouse! When I walked in my mouth immediately started to water and I longed for a taste of steak! Eating with a group of 4 definitely has its advantages - like you can sample a bunch of appetizers! My favorites were the shrimp cocktail and the BACON! The porterhouse for 4 was more than enough to feed everyone and although I loved the hash browns - I think the mashed were my favorite! Sauteed onions and mushrooms were perfect to make the meal complete! Although there was no room left I had to have the tartuffo with extra whipped cream (definitely homemade!) - I was glad that I did. Did I mention that this place is worth the trip downtown?

By far the best steakhouse ever. This place beats Peter Luger, Smith and Wollensky, Ruths Chris, etc. any day. The tender, buttery, decadent steak comes perfectly prepared and melts in your mouth. The seafood appetizer was a highly generous portion and far too delicious to not finish. The tomato, onion, and blue cheese salad is also excellent and a must-try. The sides are all excellent and are generous portions. But the stand-out of course here is the porterhouse.
The service is more refined than that at Peter Luger; the waitstaff is very gracious and helpful throughout.
The ambience is very "Wall Street;" almost everyone dining in the restaurant is male and looks like an investment banker.

I have been a quest for the truly best steakouse in NYC, I finally got to finish up the list last week with a meal at Blair and Perone. By the way the place is weak! Now, MARK JOSESPH on the other hand is the bomb! After eating at all the restaurants in NYC, my view is supported by the following.
The service is amazing, the waiters remember who you are, and always treat you with respect. The don't bother you with too much in your face service. The make sure you get what you need, when you want. Given that I always go to this place with a large group, they surely know how to serve hungry men. The porterhouse is to die for. They make sure not to overcook it. I am a rare guy. They even accomodate this less manly men who need to it cooked more, but cooking it for them on the plate. The bacon is amazing, i am still not sure what it is. Those shrimp where to get shrimp that big. I am still craving my meal. Shrimp cocktail, Bacon, Creamed Spinach (so many steakhouse don't have creamed spinach what up with that), porterhosue, and apple pie al mode of course. What could be better. It is the best money you can spend on a meal in NYC. You won't come away hungry. Be srue to vaidate your parking. The whole area around the place is chaning it is nice to walk around after. That being said, this place rocks out!

I love it!

From the time you walk through the door you know you have arrived at the best restaurant in new york city. The aroma of the sizzling steaks overcomes you as you can hardly wait to be seated. Everyone is greeted as a regular by the hostess, Jenna - and you should take her up on her offer to have a drink at the bar. Tito or Jarred are more than happy to make you the drink of your choice, my recommendation is to try one of their martinis - probably the best in Manhattan. Once seated you will want to immediately order the famous porterhouse - but be sure to at least try the bacon and fried calamari! The hash browns are crispy and will leave you wanting more and the spinach will not disappoint. You don't want to overlook this great restaurant if you are not a steakfan - the seafood entrees are superb -as is the lobster ravioli (topped with jumbo shrimp). Dessert is a must - awesome pecan pie! Just thinking about it makes me want to call for a reservation and go back there tonight! MarkJoseph Steakhouse is located downtown - right in the seaport near the Brooklyn Bridge but a definite must - no matter where you are in the city!

Have been there twice. Both times, waiters sat down with us to discuss order-so, very warm and friendly. Mussels in white sauce (appetizer)-to die for. Dirty Martinis-PERFECT. Steak-superb. Even though it was steak for two, individually prepared-one side was medium, other side was medium/rare. Perfect. We are Brooklynites, yet prefer Mark Joseph to cold and impersonal Lugers. AND, WE ARE STEAK LOVERS! After strolling through and shopping at Seaport, capping the evening off with dinner at Mark Joseph is definitely the thing to do.

Pros: We did not need reservations

.

I've been to all the rest...Markjoseph is the BEST! If you are looking for the best porterhouse in NYC - Markjoseph Steakhouse is the place you want to be! Went for drinks after work - great location near Wall Street - luckily we were able to be squeezed in - 10 of us sat for dinner! Great service - porterhouse was so good I can still taste it - Can't wait to go back - I've been craving the bacon appetizer! Markjoseph is my #1 choice for Best NYC Steakhouse!

Pros: Porterhouse, Martinis, Service

Cons: Crowded

Love the cuts, the location, not so much. Super meat, but for my money, the old homestead notches MJ out by a tbone. and the cow sculptures just dont compare. all in, MJs still a beefery among beeferies. Happy artery cloggin!

I loved the porterhouse for two, true prime meat, we came from long island, and we loved the food and the service. The swordfish special was also very good. Great ice cold martinis.

I have dined at Mark Joseph dozens of times since it opened, but on my most recent visit things just weren't the same. As a female executive, I was always greeted with familiar warmth. It was non- exisistant on this visit. My porterhouse was was fatty, my hash browns were not piping hot and I had to flag the waiter down to get my check. I was quite disappointed overall.. Mark Joseph is NOT what it used to be.

Since it opened, Mark Joseph Steak house has been my favorite place to enjoy a great steak! Was just there to celebrate the holidays with colleagues and was overjoyed as always to be catered to by the staff and enjoy an excellent meal and SUPERB PORTERHOUSE! Looking forward to going back next week with another group of colleagues!

Cons: can't find one ... maybe their location

.

the service was impeccable; they accommodated 6 of us on my friends birthday including an 8 month old girl! very friendly and professional (they provided two bowls of hot water to heat the baby food in).

unfortunately the porterhouse we ordered was on the bland side. all five of us had to add salt to the steak. although it was cooked well (crisp and charred on the outside) the steak really lacked that "burst" of flavor you usually find with dry-aged beef.

As an absolute fan of all thinks steak, top honors to MarkJoseph. This place may have been started by a Luger's cast off, but even after 5 trips across the river in teh past year, I have to declare MJ the winner of the steak wars! Perfect steak is coupled with this well-bred steakhouse, servers are quick and courteous, respect that you're plunking down big coin for a great piece of beef, and let you enjoy your evening. It may be a bit out of the way (remember it's the off shoot of the 'other' Water street) but well worth the hunt!

This a great alternative to Luger's. This is a place that you can take the girlfriend/wife and that she will actually enjoy eating there.

Food, drinks, and wait staff are the best. Been going there off and on now for a few years. It is always the best service and great food.

I have been a patron to MarkJoseph since it's inception and can honestly say that i have never had a bad meal. All have been superb!!! Along with the great food come John, Joe, Charlie JC and the rest of the best wait staff in NY. They make the experience that more enjoyable. So when in town do yourself a favor and give it a shot if your in the mood for the BEST STEAK IN NY!!!

Not only the steaks, all the food is great. The bacon and shripm salad, the creamed spinach, the grilled tuna are magnificent. The atmosphere is cordial and relaxed. Very satisfying in all respects.

Been to Mark Josephs a several times and was always amazed by the porterhouse. Cooked to perfection charred buttery outside. Side dishes also good (no side comes with a $60 steak?), lobster was great (what good is a porterhouse if its not flanked by a few tails?), seafood platter appetizer is A+. Never got out out for less than $100 per person but it seemed worth it.

Then something changed. The last two times I went (went back the second time out of utter disbelief) the porterhouse was nothing but grizzle? Each time I sent it back they replaced it with one no better. I think even the maitre'd was embarrassed. Took the steak off the bill but it didnt really matter, you cant put a price on a bad night.

Maybe they changed chefs or meat suppliers? However, with two strikes they're out.

A group of my friends (15) and I go to a different steakhouse every 3-4 months. In Sept 03' we decided to try MarkJoseph's and were not dis appointed. The food was excellent. From the cracked lobster and scungelli (which I usally don't eat but could'nt get enough of on this day) to the poterhouse which I would rate in the top 5 in the city. The waiters could not have been nicer and the desserts looked wonderful, but I could not eat another bite. Hopefully I'll be able to control myself next time and I'll be able to give the dessert a try.

Looking for a romantic evening for two or a nice place to take the wife and kids? Not here! This is a place for carnivores who relish in the finest seared beef Manhattan has to offer. This is a no-frills kind of place where food and service take presidence over presentation and atmosphere. A mecca for hardcore steak lovers who dont need the hype of a more well known NY steakhouse, because the steak is the best in NYC! Don't get cought up in the hype of a Lugars (ok) or Old Homestead (worst in NYC) when you can have better beef and even use your credit card!

Go for the Steaks. I haven't yet done Lugers, but these were fantastic. The porterhouse was seared perfectly. The middle was cooler than I like, but the meat was so good I would have eaten it raw.

The wait staff was friendly and knowledgable, but expect the 3rd degree from the maitre'd if you're not wearing an armani suit.

Do you love Peter Luger? Try Mark Joseph! Same steaks...extended menu for the ladies...better atmosphere...better service (no grumpy old men)...same prices. I'll never go to Luger again. If you haven't been to MarkJoseph, you haven't been to the best steak house in NY...or maybe anywhere.

This is one of the better filets I've had, and one of the largest. Probably twice the size of a filet at another steakhouse, so bring your appetite. I agree with earlier reviews that the steaks are undercooked from normal, but that's the way I like it anyway so it was perfect. Get the bacon as well to start, its the best $2 you will ever spend.

The service was excellent. We didn't have to do anything really. But the place was half empty...

The place itself leaves alot to be desired, and finding it is somewhat of a pain in the neck, but if you go to restaurants for the "scene" then you shouldn't be going to steakhouses.

Definitely one of the better ones!

while the carbon copy Luger menu was pretty much alright, the room is awful, like eating in a holiday inn in the midwest. The service was downright rude, and the broker boys are way too noisy in a way that makes peter luger's look quaint.

Cross the bridge.

I can only think of one reason this is not the BEST steakhouse in manhattan: It is a little out of the way. The food is exceptional. Steaks every bit as good a Lugers (probably due to the chefs influence. He used to be a Lugers) The wait staff is far more attentive than Lugers and the scenery is far more etherial. Top notch!
