Wow one whole year later and I had the same Decar experience as Sweetniz. I cannot believe that he still works there. One of my coworkers has a horror story about Turning Heads Salon, and again, involving Decar. I wish I had read this

So I've been growing my hair out for about 16 mo & wanted to get my relaxer cut out. Nothing fancy or complicated. I just didn't want my hair crazy uneven so I decided I'd go to a natural hair salon thinking this type of request wouldn't be foreign to them & the job would get done better than I could do as I have no experience with cutting hair. I was not about to be my own test dummy :) I was sooo wrong.

I made an appointment with Dakar and told him what I wanted. I was clear that I didn't want any type of style, just the relaxer cut. He was intent on doing what he wanted instead of what I, the client, desired for MY hair & insisted that, in order to cut it, my hair would need to be blow-dried. I should've left right there, but instead I said "he's the professional ...". . Washing my hair went fine until he started tearing my hair apart. I could actually hear it tearing. The girl that later came to detangle it had NO CLUE how to do it. I felt like I needed to snatch the comb from her and show her how to properly detangle hair in the state mine was in. I sat under the dryer and then proceeded over to Dakar's station & he blew my hair out and got to cutting.

In the end, I had a choppy, uneven, styled cut, there was still alot of relaxer left (because he'd decided to cut it into a style instead of what I'd asked for), and I was charged extra for the unnecessary blow-dry. I had to go home, finish the job myself, & then treat my hair to some pampering after that tug fest. I should've saved my money & done it myself.

Turning Heads may be the go-to salon for locs, but they have no clue when it comes to loose hair. Go somewhere else.

I received a wash, re-twist and style last month from Oumuo and my hair still looks great. I love the service and the atmosphere at Turning Heads and have been going there for 2 years now. I think that it's great that women with natural hair have a high end salon to go to for coloring, twisting and styling that caters to us and makes us feel good about our natural choice. Yes, they do relaxed hair as well but you honestly feel that all are welcome amd that all hair can be beautiful..

This little salon &spa right uptown is just what I think the owner aims to be. A cute little place uptown that provides great services to the community and beyond. True there are no waterfalls, and fireworks but there are are people who are nice, and do a good job. I had a hair consultation and a Spa mani & pedi. I still don't know what i will do with my hair but at least now I have options. My fingers and toes look and smell great. I had a nice time and will return.

I gave my mom a gift card for Turning Heads for the favorites package. My issue, as is every year, is what to get someone who seems to have it all and what she told me is she wanted a day for herself. So that's what my family and I got her. She was pampered and treated very well, and when checking out told the receptionist "she didn't want to leave". That's good enough for me. I have a halo over my head for the birthday with the best gift and Turning Heads have my many thanks.

Turning heads is one of my favorite places uptown. The staff is great and it definitely has a great uptown flavor. I've been getting my hair done here for years and just started getting manicures too. I love the music in the salon and the spa. The part is that you don't have to wait all day. Everyone is pretty much always on point and are always helpful.

i absolutely love having a Spa within walking distance of my apartment. Being new to the area I was pleased to find Turning Heads and learn of all the great services they provide. I get my waxing done every 2 to 3 weeks as well as my manicure & pedicure. I usually go on Tuesdays or Wednesdays to take advantage of the Off-Peak discount prices. The spa is newly remodeled, clean and spacious. A polite and professional staff rounds out a pretty nice place to be.

This PLACE WAS A DISASTER! DO NOT GO THERE THEY LEFT ME WAITING AND STARVING FOR OVER 5 HOURS!!!!! THEY WERE VERY WELL AWARE THAT I HAVE A SERIOUS MEDICAL CONDITION "LUPUS" and was told this was not a "RESTURAUNT" as I waited starving and was delayed for hours, due to their schedule they then went an CHARGED my child's credit card my CHILD, they charged her card knowing my child did not receive any services there . The cosmetologist is unprofessional and was telling me her problems about her 'drug abusive' mother this was a dissatster!!!!!!! they wrongfully, CHARGED my child's credit card and I NOW AWAIT validation. The owner Sandy has accompanied her staff in this abusive behavior. This place is getting reported...There are pics taken to PROOVE everything said her! Do not go to this place. The staff at the 'time' were "GHETTO"....

I usually don't write on the internet but after reading the review below I had to come to the defense of Turning Heads. Turning Heads, without question is a very respectable and honest business. I have been to the spa twice for massages and was treated with care by a very friendly staff of people. You can't please everyone but the staff at Turning Heads do their best and take great care of their clients. I think the previous reviewer has the wrong spot. A+ to Turning Heads.

This has been my salon to get my locs done for the past 5 years and I like it a lot. MY stylist Katrina is very sweet and does a great job on my hair. I am not a big "hair" person, but Katrina always hooks me up just right. They have done a nice job repainting the Spa and I can't wait until the Salon is done as well. It's a nice place with a lot of good people. I would definitely give it a try.

I've been going to Turning Heads for over 15 yrs, seeing the same stylist, Dakar, each time. Let me tell you I have had a wonderful experience each time when I leave the shop I'm really "Turning Heads" cause I receive so many compliments. I have recommended the shop to friends, family and even strangers in the street that stop me. I live in Queens and believe me it's worth the trip to Harlem!

I had a wonderful experience here at the spa. I have been going to spas since I was a younger girl and Ive experienced many nice and luxurious spa environments but the personalities were always cold. Not, turning heads, its a very warm and welcoming place I felt right home. the spa attendant Mildred was so wonderful and delightful. During my wait for my service I was served fresh fruit and cookies (my fav part, despite my diet) which were sooooo yummy! if you want a nice warm and friendly environment this is the place to go

MY BRIDAL SHOWER WAS AMAZING!!! I cannot say enough about my experience at Turning Heads. My girlfriend's gave me a spa party to send me off into matrimony, and we decided to check out T.H, on a friend's recommendation. I had the "favorites package", which consists of a 60min massage, 60min facial and spa manicure & spa pedicure. The first thing that really set the tone to our visit was the warm and friendly staff as you walk in the door. I really felt attended too. It wasn't stuffy and impersonal, there was a real welcoming feeling that carried through the entire day. The massage was heavenly and the therapist(Carmen) made me feel comfortable and at ease. She rocked my body!!! The facial was also awesome, her(Laura) hands were magic, and she was really knowledgeable about skincare and took the time to talk to me after...above and beyond. Nails and feet...check. That was the icing on the cake, she didn't speak much English but she spoke my language...pamper, pamper pamper!!! I am for sure going back. I hear they participate in spa week, and I have to say their everyday prices are quite reasonable. This is the working woman's spa...affordable and a treat.

I have been getting my locs done at Turning Heads for about 8 years now and I do not have anything to complain about. When I first came back in 2002 I was not to sure about making the transition to natural hair but as soon as I saw so many other clients with beautiful locs, twists, braids and other natural looks I felt right at home. I love the Aveda products and have always found the staff very kind and professional. I've only gotten a manicure and pedicure at the spa for Mother's Day last year and that was very nice as well. The spa has been newly painted and remodeled as well as very clean.

I've always wanted to try Turning Heads Day spa. And finally was able to make an appointment. I made an appointment for a full body massage, elemental nature facial and manicure. As soon as i walked in the front lobby smelled so yummy so i knew this was going to be a great experience. I had a one house Swedish massage with Carmen and i was blown away. Her massage was more than what i was expecting. From the hot towels to the wonderful aromatherapy, i was in a total relaxing state. After my massage i sat in the waiting area and waited for my facial. My esthetician greeted me and guided me to the treatment room and began a skin care consultation, which i thought made my facial experience a very relaxing one. The fact that they use AVEDA in their treatments was one of the reasons why i wanted to get a treatment at T.H. Laura was very gentle and very informative. Her facial was amazing and left my skin feeling extremely moisturized. You never want to leave a spa feeling like you have a greasy face. As my services continued, my last one was for a spa manicure. The nail technician convinced me to get a pedicure and i am glad she did. They carry from OPI to ESSIE which are my favorite nail color brands. The products she used for my hands and toes smelled so good, i loved that lemongrass scent. Overall, my experience was excellent. This spa is like a hidden treasure in Harlem. Turning Heads will definitely see me again.

BTW: they have awesome yummy tea =)

I have heard a lot about Turning Heads for a few years now so when I saw that they were participating in Spa Week this past October I decided to give some spa services a try, after all a 1 hour massage for $50.00 bucks was hard to pass up. I have to say that this little spa in Harlem wildly exceeded my expectations. I thought at bargain prices I might get bargain service but I was wrong. My therapist, Carmen, was so sweet and giving. She had no problem being warm and attentive and i really felt great after my service. I had a couple of hair questions when I was a t the desk and had the opportunity to have a consult with the owner who is a stylist and equally as warm as her staff. I entered a a spa newbie but left as a new client. They won me over.

I have long, thick, curly/wavy, unrelaxed hair. I have trouble finding good haircare especially in the City. It's generally overpriced and there is some strange phenomenon whereby hair stylists just have no idea how to do hair. It's strange being that this is their chosen vocation but it's apparently the rule. This salon was no different. I went there they were very nice. The stylist was a nice young lady and she did an average job on my hair but it was not better that if my 17 year old cousin had done it. She said something about trimming my hair and I just said no thanks because I could tell she didn't know how to do it right. I paid close to $100 and expected more than what I got.

I recently visited Turning Heads Salon & Spa. The staff was very helpful and accommodating. They made me feel like I was right at home. My massage was very relaxing (Swedish), I think next time I will get the 90 minute one. Everyone was very nice, especially the spa coordinator who helped and guided me throughout my time there. Once I was done with my spa services, my next appointment was in the upstairs hair salon. I got a simple wash and style. My hair had body and a natural shine to it and I've gotten lots of compliments. I will definitely be back to the spa and to the salon.Thank you Turning Heads for a wonderful and relaxing experience. I will be back with 3 of my girlfriends.

the staff is just too rude. The massage facilities at turning heads are nice. There is no dedicated space for manicures and pedicures, so having those services in not a spa experience. I wouldn't mind if the staff was not so trifling. I called for an appointment and was on hold for 20 minutes. It literally took the girl 10 minutes to tell me what time she was scheduling my appointment for. It stressed me out that I had asked my husband to treat me to this place and the staff was inattentive, unprofessional and just plain "not nice." I love the thought of having a nice spa in Harlem but until they learn better customer service, I am done with Turning Heads. Try Spa Castle in Queens instead.

It's a nice space, and the ladies who greet you are nice as well. That's about where the niceness ends.

I went to this salon despite its reviews because I thought that a SALON would not be able to mess up on a simple press. . . I was wrong. They have a nice hair washing/humidifier/drying routine, but this takes an hour and half and really doesn't accomplish much but taking time so that the extremely slow stylists can arrive. I waited for an hour and a half to sit in the stylist's chair, and he was sarcastic and condescending the whole time. He was vocally annoyed with how much hair I had (though I told them all before I came that I had natural hair, and they said it wasn't a problem), and then proceeded to sarcastically pepper his horrible press job with comments like 'Oh, you looove getting your hair done."

Yes, I do, but I like getting it done well. He gave me a "student discount" and still overcharged me by a significant amount. It was almost 100 dollars for a puffy, sloppy looking "style." I told him straight, he made it curly and puffy, and he was checking his texts the whole time. I will never go there again.

I went to Turning Heads because it was referrred to me by a friend, and also, the first time I went there (maybe two years ago) I received exceptional service at a moderate price (relaxer touch-up, trim, layers for $65). The stylist was also very friendly and the atmosphere was very inviting. Some lady offered to massage my hand.
So, I needed a touch-up this year, and I didn't really want to try out anything else so I decided to try Turning Heads. For some strange reason, it just wasn't the same. I was taken for my appointment on time. One lady greased my scalp, but I don't think it was greased to my liking, which I will explain later. I guess my stylist was just in a hurry because the person doing the relaxer, she went somewhat quickly. When the "shampooist" was washing the relaxer out of my hair, I think they missed a spot on the nape of my neck because it still burns a little. It was also when she was washing my hair that I realized that there was a burning feeling on my forehead. I don't remember if she scratched me or it that was relaxer on my forehead. Actually, this probably could happen at any salon I guess, but my real pet-peeve was towards the end.
So, I am out of the hair-dryer. When the stylist styles my hair, she makes me look like one of the supremes. I am a young adult, and everyone in that salon had up-to-date hairstyles, so why do I have to likie some one from the 60's?!??!?!?!? It looked like a bob gone wrong with a giant sweep of hair across my forehead... and she didn't trim my bangs which I am accostumed to. Here's my ultimate pet-peeve: Then she wrote on a paper $85. $85+ tax for a touch-up and no trim? That's ridiculous. I am a broke student and wasted almost $100 on this place. I am still going to have to find somewhere else that can give me a decent trim/ hairstyle, and I still have this chemical burn star on my forehead. Next time I will stick to the old-lady near home who can do a decent relaxer and trim for $40.

Pros: ambiance?, fast-relaxer, on-time

Cons: touch-up styling (end result), small scratch/chemical burn, prices WAY too high

I received terrible service here. The one stylist who does relaxers is obviously overbooked, because he rushed doing my relaxer and trim. He was rude and obnoxious when he asked me what was I having done and I had to wait 2 hours before I sat in his chair. The hairstyle he gave me was nothing special. And I was overcharged for the lousy service I received. I will never go back to this salon and I will not recommend it to anyone else.

Cons: Bad service and attitudes.

I know it's been stated before but this is not ms.jessie's at all. My appointment was for 1...I was kept waiting for nearly 3 hours! If my hair wasn't in such bad shape I would have never waited that long. The stylist continued to take people who in front of me who had later appointments than me. Finally, I received a texturizer (which is supposed to like the slikener but it's not). In the end, it was left on too long and now the top of my hair looks like it's been relaxed. In short, my hair texture no longer matches. Also, my haircut is very blunt. It looks like those short poofy bobs from the ealry 90's. I'm not even sure what to do with my hair at this point.

I went to Turning Heads for a relaxer and a cut - and I will never go back! It was expensive, though that is really not the problem - the result was not worth the price - or any price for that matter. My hair was cut way more than I wanted, it was styled full and curly - not sleek and straight like I asked and if that was not enough it was not cut straight! So much so that I had to go back three days later to have it "fixed" - only to leave the salon with it still being messed up. I mean it was noticeably uneven. I have an attachment to my hair - I am not going to lie, I like it simple - and this was the first time I have ever looked at myself in the mirror and not recognized myself - it was horrible, uneven and not worth the time and a waste of $150. Do not go there - there are not many great salons in New York for African American women - please know that unless you have natural hair - this is not one of the decent ones. It is not worth it.

Pros: location, the stylist are nice

Cons: You do not go to a salon for a nice stylist - everything else.

I visited this salon based on a referral from Miss Jessie's, another salon which temporily closed. I was told they performed a similar process to the Silkener. I knew that the process was different to Miss Jessie's, but I was told I would get a similiar, if not, the same result. The stylist applied Curly Pudding and put me under the dryer. I came out of that dryer looking like a bird's nest - my hair is several different textures, there are two LONG and STRAIGHT pieces hanging down the side. There were no curls or no ringlets. Just a mess of hair. The stylist looked at my hair, not knowing what to do with it. She later did double strand twists to give it some shape, but it still looked crazy. I asked the manager for a refund and it took her a week and a half to get back to me, only after calling four times. She told me the stylist did a good job and she couldn't explain why I was happy with my service. IF YOU HAVE A SILKENER, DO NOT GO TO THIS SALON!!! I might have to cut my hair off and start growing my hair all over again.

Excellent salon. Timeliness at this salon is one of its major selling points. When making an appointment you can expect to have your time respected and to receive focused and attentive hair care by knowledgeable stylists--as most of us have learned the hard way, this feature alone is priceless. Also, for anyone considering loc extensions, this salon is unbeatable--I just received a full head of loc extensions and have been receiving non-stop compliments from other loc-wearers who assume I have been growing them for years. For the service, I found the price pretty reasonable. Overall, an excellent choice that I would highly recommend--although slightly more expensive than many places, I find that the quality of the service is well worth the price.

I can't speak on the spa service, it may be great, but the hair service was terrible for me. I thought this salon specialized in natural hair. When I told them i wanted a flat iron my natural hair, i was looked as if i was crazy and and it was impossible. The shampoo lady was terrible telling me about how my hair was. I don't mind someone telling me about proper hair care , but don't scold me like a child and act like you are annoyed just becuase I don't have a perm. I like the humidifying conditioner treatment, but my hair still wasn't straight as it should have been at the end of the day. I paid 60 for half done hair. I went somewhere else the next week and paid 30 for the hair care i am accustomed to.

I became a client of Turning Heads early-on, shortly after it opened at its present location and use the services in the spa as my little mini-vacation get away. It is always such a restorative experience.

It is so wonderful to finally find an attractive, soothing environment staffed by professionals who always seem so willing to assist. There are several spa services that I have used, but the one that I, personally, find most beneficial is the reflexology. At the end of the session I am totally aware that I have had a relaxing and therapeutic experience.

Thank you for making these services available in a warm and agreeable atmosphere

A one stop shop for total relaxation, pampering and a head turning hairstyle (hence the name). l LOVE Turning Heads!!! The atmosphere is great -- calming and smells beautiful. The massage therapists and estheticians are professional and pampering while giving you a service that is worth far more than the price you will pay. The spa area is intimate and inviting. Get your hair done in a natural or straight style by any one of the stylists and you will look and feel like a million bucks!

If you want a phenomenal facial in New York City, Turning Heads is the place to go! The facialists truly have a passion for their craft. They are knowledgeable and passionate about skincare. They do not push products...which is always a plus.

on your locs or natural hair styles go to Turning Heads. The creativity and skill of the stylists are unsurpassed for Harlem salons. I treat my self once a month to spa quality treatments that keep my hair healthy and a style that 'turns heads'. The prices are not cheap, but if you believe in getting what you pay for, you won't be disappointed... you are worth it!

I got my hair done at Turning Heads a little while ago. I generally was very satisfied with the stylist. She was skillfull, polite and quick. The shampoo assistants were also very nice and helpful.
My only complaint was with the salon receptionist's attitude. She was unpleasant and had a near scowl on her face the whole time I dealt with her.
I would advise Turning Heads to remind their receptionist to smile and be more polite no matter how tired she is or how bad her day was. After all, this is important for someone who works with the public.

It's too much money for the service. They need to lower their prices if they really want to serve the larger African American community. And the phone and in-person reception each time I've been there has been aloof and/or condescending. I was taken care of by an assistant, but charged at the stylist's rate.
